Agriculture / Profitable Fish Production by TUNDESANCO(m): 12:56pm On Aug 10, 2023
there are various aspects of fisheries that are profitable but table size or ( Melange) is not one of them. melange is raising fish that are not UpTo 1kg a table size is 1kg and above and u raise them for 4 to 6 and then sell. Why is it impossible to sell at a profit margin? It is because there's proliferation of farmers who enter the system with the erroneous assumption of making profit when they go into table size production. Halfway into the business, they go broke or discover that fish has stunted growth and may decide to wanna sell. buyers will force down the purchasing price and most desperate growers has no choice than to sell. ask yourself why somebody will wanna buy from you at a higher price when he can get it cheaper at the fish market?
your nightmare is when those selling at the fish market will be the one to com buy your fish (so pe OTI lo) your business is as good as dead. they give u ridiculous offer and u regret why u are in business. two months ago, former president Olusegun Obasanjo came out to say he is running at a loss in raising one kg table size. he said N1,400 isn't enough to raise a kg. the shocking thing is that 1kg is sold between N1300 to N1,600. it is rare to get 1,600 though. this tells you that table size is not the way to go.

Hatchery is good but it is labor intensive and require enough sensitivity. you need the technical know how but in the event that you don't have the technical know how but you still want to be involved in raising fish at a profitable margin which is very sensible and lucrative, there is still one more aspect you can go into which will yield optimal profit. it's this aspect am more interested in and focus on which in the event that you can't hatch, you can still profitably invest and get involved in the agricultural/fisheries value chain.
stay alert as I discuss that in my next article.

Agriculture / Avoidable Causes Of Death Of Fingerlings by TUNDESANCO(m): 10:58pm On Jun 28, 2023
Fingerlings are most vulnerable when they are less than 10g in size, thus the highest mortality rates occur during this period.

Over stocking the pond leads to high mortality. This is because they need to be fed with a relatively large quantity of feed which will thus result in higher amount of waste released into the pond.

High amount of waste in fish ponds degrades water quality and should be minimised as much as possible.

Catfish are carnivorous by nature, which means they feed on flesh. So one should ensure that when stocking fingerlings, they should be sorted weekly and fingerlings of the same size should be stocked together.

Again, fingerlings of similar sizes should be stocked into smaller tanks before transferring them to the main grow-out pond.

Overfeeding fingerlings and juveniles may also lead to high mortality rates because they have uncontrollable appetite which lead to overfeeding and consequently death.

Another reason is transfer stress, when they are transferred from one location to another, such fingerlings/ juveniles should be left for at least 24hours before feeding.

Poor water management. Anything below and above 6.5 - 7.5 PH of Water (i.e too acidic or alkaline) makes the fish to be prone to disease infestation, poor feed conversion ration by the fish, slow growth, wasted resources, blisters on fish skin, promotes the growth of micro organisms such as fungi, bacteria, and parasitic worms that will eventually kill the fish.

NOTE: Make sure you use your ph meter to regularly test your pond water ph level. At least 3 times a day.

Agriculture / Some Of The Deadliest Diseases That Affects Catfish by TUNDESANCO(m): 1:12am On Jun 28, 2023
SOME OF THE DEADLIEST DISEASES THAT AFFECTS CATFISH

1. CRACK HEAD DISEASE:

This is the most common catfish disease in ponds. The cause of this disease is not yet understood unlike earthen ponds and natural water bodies, although adverse water quality due to over feeding is believed to be the main factor and also unbalanced nutrients in the diet of the food.
A fish affected by this disease shows the following symptoms;
Distended abdomen due to septicemia and hemorrhage.
Occasional exopthalmus (pop eye).
This disease can detected at early stages, affected fish show reddish lateral line on the skull between the two air chambers, as soon as this symptoms is observed in some fish during sampling, feeding should be substantially reduced and pond water should be replace.
Generally, the fish recovers after few weeks after which feeding can be increased little by little.
N/B: At the final stage of the disease the skull will break laterally followed by death

2. WATER QUALITY DISEASE: Oxygen deficiency is a major cause of suffocation and mass mortality in pond. It occurs when the weather suddenly becomes hot, or the air temperature rises and reduces the solubility of the oxygen.
Prevention and treatment
For ponds, excess mud should be removed after each culture period. Fish tanks should be line-washed at the rate of 225-275kg1ha after each culture period, aerators may be used to increase oxygen level.

3. GAS BUBBLE DISEASE: This is caused by oxygen saturation in the water resulting to rapid increase in algal photosynthesis. Small bubbles accumulates on the fish, intestines, skin, and filaments causing the fishes to float.
Prevention and treatment
The addition of fresh water and fertilization to the ponds will curtail the incidence of the oxygen super saturation and gas bubbling.

4. SCOLIOSIS: This is a skeletal deformation of the fish body, Which is cause due to high concentration of heavy metal and acid in water. This can also be caused by mineral deficiency like calcium, phosphorus, vitamins like vitamin C can also result to skeletal deformation of fishes like embryos, fry, fingerlings.

Prevention and treatment
Block wall tanks, newly constructed fish tanks must be allowed to cure for 30-35days (4-5weeks) with any animal manure in bags placed inside ponds to reduce the acid effect of cement used in plastering the interior pond wall or use dry grasses and shrub in the pond and allow it to ferment with water inside for 15days (2weeks).

Dugout pond: These must be allowed to settle, limed and fertilized according before stocking fingerlings in addition. Feeds must be balance with adequate calcium and phosphorus.

5. RUNNING HORSE DISEASE: This is another disease common in catfish farm, here affected fish usually swim violently in groups around the side of the pond.
Prevention and treatment
The stocking density of fry must be control by draining part of the fish tank water every other day.

6. ANAEMIA DISEASE: Affected fishes are black with big head and small bodies. This is attributable to overcrowding and food shortage etc.
Prevention and treatment
Avoid over-crowding.
Adequate feeding is advisable.

7. GILL ROT: This is caused by bacteria called flexibacter columnaries. It affects different level of catfish like fingerlings, juvenile, and the symptoms are as follows
Black gill filament covered with mud or mucus.
Gill ulcerates drip off.
Inflammation and hyperemia are visible inside the opercula.

Treatment:

Table salt (Nacl) at a concentration of 2-2.5% for 10-15 in 20litres of water.
furazolidone 0.2g mixed will feed or oral administration 0.5kg/100kg for grow out fish or 1kg/1-100kg fingerlings.

N/B: this medication should be applied for 4-5 days

Agriculture / Water Analysis: Ph Level And It Impacts On Your Fish by TUNDESANCO(m): 12:57pm On Jun 27, 2023
Fish will lose their appetite in poor quality water and usually show signs of stress as the conditions deteriorate.
.
.
The situation under investigation could be an early warning sign of an impending critical water quality problem. PH and levels may be low or high, thus depriving the fish of a key ingredient for fast growth and Development.
.
.
💥Water that has a pH that is too low or too high can be harmful to fish and other aquatic life. .
.
.
💥At low pH, toxic metals such as aluminum can enter the water in greater concentrations, some nitrogen-bearing chemicals become more toxic, and the metabolic processes of fish can become less efficient. .
.
.
💥Water with pH below 5 can inhibit reproduction or lead to death, and young fish and other aquatic organisms are especially susceptible. Water with a pH below 6.0 can inhibit growth.
.
.
💥At high pH values (such as >9), most ammonium ions are convert
TOTAL DISSOLVED SOLIDS.
Dissolved solids may influence the toxicity of heavy metals and organic compounds to fish and other aquatic life. This takes place primarily because of the antagonistic effect of hardness on metals. Chromates, coppers, cyanides, detergents, phenolic compounds, zinc and several other substances are generally more toxic in distilled water than in hard water of high dissolved solids.
Total Dissolved Solids Significance to Fish.
In bodies of water, like rivers, higher levels of total dissolved solids often harm aquatic species. The TDS changes the mineral content of the water, which is important to survival of many animals. Also, dissolved salt can dehydrate the skin of aquatic animals, which can be fatal.
Concentrations that are too high or low can affect the fish’s growth or cause death.
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is the total amount of mobile charged ions, including minerals, salts or metals dissolved in a given volume of water, expressed in units of mg per unit volume of water (mg/L), also referred to as parts per million (ppm). TDS is directly related to the purity of water and the quality of water purification systems and affects everything that consumes, lives in, or uses water, whether organic or inorganic, whether for better or for worse.
Many People don’t know that calcium and magnesium rich water makes the egg’s membrane of fish harder, and dramatically reduces the chances of hatching.
I noticed that I’ve had greater success hatching catfish fish eggs in lower TDS levels than at higher TDS levels.
I have also observed that high TDS levels (due to high levels of chlorides, calcium and magnesium, fluoride, sulphides as found in tap water) is generally the cause.
This is where it can be a common mistake for many people, including myself, to try all sorts of methods to lower pH and hardness but give no attention to TDS values.
This is where Reverse Osmosis water can help with this predicament.
I use RO water to successfully lower calcium and magnesium levels, as well as TDS.
This in turn has an impact on reducing pH as well as TDS.
The fish seemed to be much more healthy using this method of preparing clean, low TDS water. And as a reward, the fish eggs are hatched into fries successfully.
Please always keep the TDS levels of your pond water low.
What is low? Soft water is generally considered to be in the range of TDS 70 – 150ppm. My personal observations have shown me that high levels of dissolved mineral content in the water is also an important and another reasons for the failed breeding of many fries other than pH parameters.
This is attributed to inappropriate levels of calcium and magnesium, and subsequently carbonates and bicarbonates. Placing the emphasis solely on pH alone does not rectify the issue since it can be said that pH is a symptom of the overall mineral content in the water, rather than the actual root cause. To make matters worse, pH down chemicals only adds to the TDS count, not decrease it.
When breeding catfish keep your emphasis on pH alone is incomplete, please don’t leave out TDS because both goes handy.

Agriculture / Causes Of Cannibalism In Fisheries by TUNDESANCO(m): 12:39am On Sep 19, 2020
Several factors are responsible.
1 inadequate feeding
2 Allowing water level to be too low when changing water, and in d course of struggling for space they get injured and others feed on the wounded
3 over stocking
4 feeding in one spot can cause injury and one's there is bleeding carnibalization starts.
5 improper sorting can also be a factor, particularly without commensurate feeding

Agriculture / Water Hardness And Success In Fish Farming by TUNDESANCO(m): 12:26am On Sep 19, 2020
Water Hardness and Success in Fish Farming
Although so many fish farmers do not understand the importance of water hardness to both fish health and water quality, this is because people thought fish farming is all about having a good water pH and so once they test the water pH and discovered it is good they careless about other water parameters like water hardness.
Please note the following facts about water hardness:
1. The water pH is majorly affected by Water hardness
2. The toxicity of many common substances, including some fish disease treatments are also influenced by water hardness.
3. Water hardness also play an important role on fish osmoregulation, a key factor to fish health.
Types of hardness:
According to research on this topic, there are two types of water hardness which are: permanent hardness and alkalinity (often referred to as carbonate or temporary hardness). The sum of both types of hardness is called the general or total hardness.

I warned about compunding your own feeds especially when you haven't been tutored on how to get the right formular for compounding at various stages. I was in one farms and somebody was feeding his fish with bread. When I queried the man, he said 'foreign feeds are expensive'. I heard of somebody also mixing garri with red oil and feeding juveniles with it. My humble submission is, please, stock the quantity that you have capacity to feed. Do not stock 5000 fish if you can't feed morethan 2000. Cut your coat according to your cloth.

Agriculture / Getting The Best Result From Catfish Production by TUNDESANCO(m): 12:32am On Oct 10, 2015
No matter how many fish we produce, we can never meet the market demand for catfish. I encourage people to go into fisheries but it is good you know how to hatch (a process of giving birth to fish) yoursel. Buying your seed from the market is not always a good idea but I recommend you buy seeds(fingerlings and juveniles) from reputable outfits. I've been in fisheries business for years now. I train people on how to hatch, I set up hatchery for clients. I sell fingerlings and juvenile on a large scale. My advice is that people should go for ready made feeds like copens, durante etc to ensure effeciency and effectiveness. Making your feeds is good but have you considered the yield during your harvest to ready made feeds? For you to have great result in your hatching, monitoring and control is key. Fishery business can make u rich if know the secrets. You can contact me on 08032869913(whatsapp). Tundesanco@gmail.com. M2M Farm Federal Housing, Lugbe, ABUJA
