Music/Radio / Re: What Song(s) do You Never Get Tired Of Listening To? by velmaN(f): 3:50pm On May 29, 2010
Okay so I really do love country music, and I have lots of favorites, but these three are always around me, cell phone, Ipod, CD in car and lappie. I just love listening to them.

The House that built me- Miranda Lambert

Jesus take the wheel- Carrie Underwood

I hope you dance- Lee Ann Wormack

Romance / Re: When Parents Oppose Your Relationship? by velmaN(f): 4:42am On Feb 28, 2010
@ Seun,
Sorry about this. Next time don't ask your father whether he approves. Just invite him to the wedding.

Good idea, but you know what, it is not that simple. I pray I don't encounter such because it will be very difficulty to have to choose between family and husband. And if I have to choose, I guess I know where my loyalty will be. Also giving the extravagant naija wedding, family disagreeing might just be karma's way of helping me save money on a typical naija wedding, and my dream of a quiet wedding coming through.

BTW I know my family most def will not marry me, so if they say no, there better be an alternative. Whatever happens I pray I don't experience it sha.
Family / Re: What Would U Do If Ur Brother-inlaw Slapped U by velmaN(f): 10:02am On Feb 16, 2010
Why would the brother-in-law slap the wife? If it were me, I probably will be too shocked to react. In my dazed state, d brother-in-law should better have left, otherwise, I promise to make sure I am the last lady he raises his hands on (oniyeye, good for nothing, silly thing). On the other hand, my instant impulse will be to slap him right back (defensive mechanism) abi now.
But like most people said, how is the husband treating his wife or how does he portray his wife to his family members? Divorce is not the only answer here, but the wife should not base her actions on what her family thinks, so until she is dead, or becomes incapacitated before the family realizes she is in danger. She got her life to live o, if u say she should stay because of her kids, it is someone who is alive that can be a mother.
Politics / Re: ~Have You Ever Denied Your Country(Nigeria)? . . .~ by velmaN(f): 5:20am On Oct 19, 2009
@ Amaka,
Maybe she stopped taking checks after the incidence, I have no idea. All I know is she was swindled by a Nigerian, I happened to be a Nigerian (coincidence maybe or maybe not) tough luck. I know I paid cash.
@ Nuzo,
When u r caught off guard, u got no defense system, am not saying Zimbabweans are saints or any other country citizen is a saint, but CNN, Oprah, Dr Phil, MSNBC etc are not helping matters.
Politics / Re: ~Have You Ever Denied Your Country(Nigeria)? . . .~ by velmaN(f): 4:22am On Oct 19, 2009
Well, I have never denied my great country and I pray I never would. There was an incidence that happened though and it made me wonder what in d world is going on. I had a tailor from Zimbabwe, here in America sew my naija material (skirt and blouse). Well she called me and said it was completed, I dragged my tired self and drove (after working like 7 days straight with no day off) to her house, got my dress and offered her a check. She refused the check and said she only takes cash. Her reason I will put in quote "A while back I sewed clothes for a Nigerian lady who was getting married, I sewed all their Nigerian clothes and the cost was about $600, she wrote me a check and she canceled the check before I could cash it, meanwhile the Nigerian lady had left the city with no forwarding address". So she never got her money from all the hard work. I was speechless and embarrassed. Needless to say I drove to the ATM to get the money.

So have I ever denied my country? NO. Are there people who are just bad eggs? YES. And these people have risen the bar for other good Nigerians abroad to prove that there are hardworking, good, honest, loving, intelligent, compassionate, fun-loving and amazing Nigerians all over the world.
Education / Re: MPCE Resulta are Out! by velmaN(f): 2:24pm On Jul 16, 2009

@ Justgood,
Leave everybody alone, cos from the look of things, you are not perfect either.

Anyway, I wish you all good luck. See u all on top Cheers!!!!!!

Culture / Re: Is An Elder Always Right? by velmaN(f): 10:52am On May 21, 2009
An elder or older person is not always right. Most of what they tell us is based on their experience, and the fact that they tend to be wiser. We listen to our elders out of respect but do we follow what they tell us 100% absolutely not. Yoruba people say "Bi omode ba laso to agba, ko le ni akisa to o"(pardon ma Yoruba). So that is what really sums it up. And in our culture, we have to respect them whether they r right or not.

Is an elder always right, ma obvious answer is NO.

oh if i may continue from above, I am actually at work right now, busted  my ass from midnight to 430am, to save a man who is bleedding from his ass, i mean bright red blood, the DR says he does not know what else to do, because we have done a lot huh, so it is my responsibility to see that he makes it through the night, you know, i am exhausted, i am going to take my ass to the conference room and eat the FREE breakfast management is serving at 630am for nurses week and then i am taking my butt home kissing my husband and baby and passing the hell OUT

OK , as an RN, i am always irritated when i see shows where the RN is made the MDs plaything, reasons below

1. They ARE portrayed as such by the media and of course the powerful lobby groups that makes it seem as if we are the doctors plaything
2. it is an attempt to make it seem like the nurse is dumb and not smart enough to think critically just to carry out orders
3. it is a ploy by the medical field especially in the media, how many times have you seen a nurse save a life
4. all those stupid shows that show a doctor giving fluids, or procedures are whack , no Dr does that
5. a nurse is good for more than that- being a plaything,
6. i don't call my patients honey, sugar, sweetie and i don't let them call me that either, your better half is at home
7. i am not a mean nurse, I am actually very friendly but i like to keep the lines clear, don't call me any terms of endearment i am not your sugar, it is a perpetration of the myth of nurse as a sex symbol
8`. i have worked with phenomenal nurses and stupid nurses, just like i have worked with smart physicians and  incompetent doctors that i would not even let treat my cat if i had one (and i don't like cats!!!)
9. in the US there is a nurse advocacy group that is like a watch dog for nurses to keep us in the know especially when media, Dr groups try to blame nurses or make it seem like we are stupid

10. YOU NEED A NURSE TO SAVE YOUR LIFE SOMETIMES, IT IS WHAT I DO IN CRITICAL/ INTENSIVE CARE, SAVE YOUR ASS, BECAUSE THE DR IS NOT THERE, I AM TRAINED TO THINK ON MY FEET, QUICKLY AND INTELLIGENTLY, I LEARNED FROM AWESOME NURSES AND GREAT PHYSICIANS, SO WHEN YOU HAVE OPEN HEART SURGERY OR MAJOR PROCEDURES AND ARE CRASHING (READ DYING)YOU NEED A NURSE TO KEEP YOU ALIVE UNTIL THE DR GETS THERE ,

SO after my rant, HUG A NURSE, THANK A NURSE, KISS A NURSE, APPRECIATE A NURSE, ,, IT IS NURSES WEEK IN THE USA, YEAH,,

PS A NEW SHOW CALLED HAWTHORNE, starring Jada Pinkett Smith seems nice,

which channel airs this show.

My feeling exactly am @ work too, and just like u said HAPPY NURSES WEEK.
On a lighter note,
U can imagine d way I laugh when I hear folks that watch Greys Anatomy ask me if all those things r real. (yeah right, a Dr change a pt or hang IVF,OMG, and watch my jaw drop when they ask if people do really make out in the elevator, hahahahah, i wish, )
Career / Re: Are Nurses Promiscuous/Flirty? Is It A Myth? by velmaN(f): 10:22am On May 05, 2009
I think nurses look natural in their dress and very immaculate attracting on looker with the ribbon, tight white dress always very sexy unlike bankers neat but paints too much on them, hair looks expensive, police women are dirty looking, teachers are very fat.
Do I sense some stereotypical ideas here or is it just the way u look @ folks?
Career / Re: Are Nurses Promiscuous/Flirty? Is It A Myth? by velmaN(f): 5:41am On May 05, 2009
Maybe she concluded her observations from Nollywood.

Nollywood tends to exaggerate stuff

Wouldn't surprise me if it was a storyline of a Nurse falling in love with a doctor. Gimme a break

Sorry to disappoint u, this is not a Nollywood observation, I Just was interested in other matured people's opinion.
It does not matter what others think, I just was curious (wanted to av an Idea of what is going on in some people's mind when they hear u r a nurse)

As for me I am a NURSE, I am so proud to be one, and need I say more, i know I am a good one. I love helping people, and I derive pleasure in helping family and especially my friends figure out what is going on with them. It is what I do and live for, am an advocate for my patients, above all I respect every individual and love my God

Well said. my mom never has time for herself, she works like 24hrs

U r so right @ times i wonder if I av any life outside my job @ all. Aye o po rara.

Dont think they are promiscuous but they are so sexy ; that uniform tight and short . . . . . mmmmmh
sorry to disappoint you, our uniforms here are scrubs tops and pants, tight uniform ko tight uniform ni.
Culture / Re: Mother Tongue Or English At Home? by velmaN(f): 8:12am On May 04, 2009
My kids will learn, understand and speak YORUBA @ home, let them learn their English from school. I live in America, I can't afford my kids not learning their mother tongue (I need to be able to ba won wi, and talk to them in Yoruba when they are misbehaving while with their oyinbo friends, na d koko be dat). I lived in Ilorin and yoruba was primary language @ home, never got any accent and my English is fluent and good to go. I think havin an accent depends on the environment the child grows up in.
Food / Re: Where Can One Get Agbalumo Out Of Nigeria? by velmaN(f): 9:11am On May 01, 2009
does anyone of you know iyeye? am not sure if it the spelling. it is a sour, yellowish and not too round fruit, so small

I sure remember Iyeye, did not really like it though cos somtimes it is really sour. agbalumo was one good one especially if u lay ur hands on the sweet ones.
Food / Re: How Ripe Do You Like Your Fried Plantain? by velmaN(f): 8:54am On May 01, 2009
Yes o I do love me some plantains . @ times U get them @ the African store and sometimes in Jamaican/Mexian store.
Dont they derive dodo-ikire from the extra soft ones, and the not so ripe ones get boli from them abi (Boli ati epa delicacy, delicious, )
Events / Re: Can One Have A Small Wedding In Nigeria? by velmaN(f): 8:58am On Apr 25, 2009
LOL if only things were that simple here in naija, i would have pulled that stunt. if i done that, my parents will probably say "well,  thats your business, now we're now going to throw a massive wedding ceremony that'll be the talk of the town" trust yoruba people. there's nothing we love than over the top weddings.

That is so true, I can imagine my folks saying dat, and family also sayin "I av bin to all my friends kids weddin why should my own be different (na momsy they talk dat one d most sha)".

I hope someday, naija would reach a place where u can av a church weddin with those u really want and not necessarily having to go to the registry.
Romance / Re: Would You Lie To Be At Peace With A Man? by velmaN(f): 7:24am On Apr 25, 2009
Somethings are not worth the effort like someone said. Let us be real, it all depends on the level of understanding between both parties. Also there is something "like telling the truth but not the whole truth" And also what mama don't know wont hurt mama right *wink*
Career / Are Nurses Promiscuous/Flirty? Is It A Myth? by velmaN(f): 9:58am On Apr 24, 2009
Hey NL, I just need Ur opinion on this, I am a nurse based in the US, I studied nursing in d US so never had the

naija nurse experience. One of ma friends called me and said "Nurses are flirts, I know u not though (bet he was

trying to make me feel good)".

So tell me, I know am not, I love what I do and probably wont have it any other way (helping people gives me a satisfaction), but is that Ur opinion of nurses?
Fashion / Re: Men: Nigerian Women Lack Dress Sense by velmaN(f): 9:09am On Apr 24, 2009
I think this is true- what do you think?
@ poster
I dont think we (naija women), lack dress sense. We just need to know that suffering in silence is no a good way of life. Meaning dont wear a suit or long sleeve all in d name of designers on a freaking hot day. I probably will be dressing the same if not that I live abroad now, and I really dont care about impressing anybody esp not when am in Naija (I dress for comfort).  Being a Naija in America sure has really helped ma dress sense sha o. I av been able to pick up the good of both fashion world and believe me makes me unique. (lolll)
Fashion / Re: How Do You Describe A Perfume Who's Name You Do Not Know? by velmaN(f): 8:49am On Apr 22, 2009
I was in this same dilemma a few weeks back. When I got to d store, I told one of the attendants dat I couldn't remember the name of d perfume but Beyonce did the advertisement last year (very funny). The attendant did not know what I was saying but someone else @ the branch store did remember it (cos she like the perfume too), turned out it was Armani diamonds. So I would say think of of something unique about the perfume and remember there is nothin as dumb answers. best of luck
Family / Problem You Have With Your Dad? by velmaN(f): 9:30am On Apr 17, 2009
I dont think I have ever had any problem (s) with my dad. He is so understanding and supportive. I think though he usually finds it difficult to let go. I know I will always be his little girl, although I am in my late 20s. And I bet letting go of me when I decided to leave the country was difficult for him, I think he has done pretty good. Whenever there is a misunderstanding or argument btw Him and I, it always had to do with him tryn to work stuffs out for me, I do enjoy it, but later I had to put a stop to it. Either way, I am still is little girl and I always will.

Re: Do You Use/prefer Tampons Or Pads?
« #13 on: May 31, 2008, 05:58 AM »

I prefer pads because tampons if used 4long causes whatever they call it sydrome. so i use pads to stay on the safer side.

also it is much easier to pee

My dear, it is called Toxic shock syndrome (TSS). And some people have died cos of it. Some people get so carried away and forget the tampoon is in, sometimes it goes past where it is supposed and end up in the body system. And because the blood on d tampoon is filled with bacteria, the bacteria ends up in the body system

Word of caution be very careful with tampoon, and make sure ur hands are clean before inserting it, so u dont end up introducing bacteria into ur body when u inserting the tampoon

PS. I do use the pads though (to much risk associated with the tampoons)better safe than sorry

Y would I shower more than once, even if I want to , the time is not just there. Kudos to the ones who love water and showers, not me.

Fellow Nairalanders what have you all got to say.

For me I remember those days of writing WAEC and not doing anything in the morning. AM express came to my rescue, and my weekday morning was fun.

Food / Re: Your Worst Cooking Mistake Ever! by velmaN(f): 4:12am On Apr 13, 2008
i had two experiences,
1. This was back in Naija a couple of years ago: my sister and I was supposed to cook dinner,it was beans, and we were running late, cos my dad was going to be home soon. well in our quest to get it all done on time, I added salt, and without asking me, my sister added salt too. Mennnnnnnnn, you can imagine what happened when my dad tasted the food.
2. made moin-moin, and forgot to add salt (who eats moin-moin without salt)
I think all my worst cooking had to do with salt
Romance / Re: Boyfriend Doesn't Like Her New Found Love For Volleyball by velmaN(f): 2:49am On Mar 04, 2008
@debosky,
did i hear you say asset you paid for? I think the thread was "Boyfriend Doesn't Like Her New Found Love For Volleyball", and no where was it mentioned that it was husband, or am I mistaken? Do people pay "owo ori"(dowry), now as boyfriends? Omo, leave that alone, like one poster said "i ban every spirit of possessiveness" i say a big AMEN to that. She has her life to live and I bet she has the right to do what makes her happy. If volleyball is helping her and keeping her fit and out of trouble why not. Jumpology ko, bush people, have you not heard about different sporting wares for women? Please, its just a case of another typical man trying to be in charge. When are going women going to start doing/ allowed to do what makes them happy? Must we always be menpleasers, it doesn't mean they will in turn treat us right or please us o.
@poster,
ask your friend what really makes her happy; always wanting to please her boyfriend OR doing what she loves and enjoy doing. What ever she decides goodluck. But as for me i have to know the koko of the matter before i make my choice, because in all I am the subject matter, and i got to make my self happy.
