Ricky Rozay:

No oooo. That's false.. He/she WON'T need to come back to Nigeria...

The visa can be Renewed in the US...

You will just walk into the international student office of your school and explain to them that your Visa has expired, then they will guide you and help you through the whole process of Renewing the Visa there in the US...

Wow. I never knew. And I came back to Nigeria because of renewal. Kai. Ok sha. Thanks for letting me know.

nigerianphoenix: Thanks everyone! I just picked up my passport, but the visa will expire in 2015. I'll graduate in 2017. Is this normal, or is there a mistake in the visa?

It is normal. The student visas that are given to Nigerians last for only 2 years (blame the Nigerian Government) so you will have to come back in 201d to renew (or do runs and land green card).

risher ris: so what do you think is going to happen?but i dont think thats the point.....are you trying to tell me others that has been issued visas did not play visa lottery at all?pls help....

My guy, I am not a guru o, but visa lottery players are generally suspected of having plans to stay in the States indefinitely. The VOs don't ALWAYS screen applicants for visa lottery entries, but when they do, it can spoil show.

I played visa lottery last year but was still given my visa 2 weeks ago. However, I have received several american visas in the past, so I am guessing that due to that fact, they didn't choose to screen me for prior entries.

I hope this information is of use to you. Good luck.

Delta Airline is too expensive... Try emirate and others cos you will see below 200K

Thanks for the protip. I've checked Emirates and you were right- Lagos to Houston was around US$1k. Those Delta guys are not even serious.

@ ALL: If any dates for Lagos become available please let me know.

Hello House,

I tried to pick up my passport from VFS at Oregun today but I was told to go to DHL House Isolo. Can anyone on here tell me how I can get to this DHL House from Ojodu Berger?

I am thinking of going from Ojodu to Ikeja, from Ikeja to NAHCO near the airport, taking a bus from NAHCO to Oshodi, alighting at the bridge near DHL House and walking to the place.

Is this the easiest way to get there? Thanks in advance.

nigerianphoenix: How do I compare prices and book my flight to the USA?

P.S: This is my sneaky way of telling you guys that my visa application was approved in Abuja today. The interview didn't take more than one minute.

Congratulations, and its great that your school gave you financial aid. To compare tickets, I'd suggest www.wakanow.com. I don't know if justwise will delete the suggestion sha. Right now, a one-way ticket from Lagos to Atlanta is 350k via Delta Airlines. These guys aren't smiling o.

They shouldn't have released you. You should have stayed there for as long as the Nigeria Police Force keep many poor souls behind bars for crimes that they didn't commit.

See how you are announcing that your father is ASP as if it is something to be proud of. Instead of you to hide your head in shame. Mtcewwwww. angry

valentijay:

Its quite pathetic

Is that so? You are saying it is pathetic. Instead of you to find a more reasonable school. I am not even sure that such an outlandish request is even legal. Don't be a learner my guy. Look for another school. I have never heard of such a silly request from an american university. It sounds like the kind of stuff you would hear from a Nigerian "abe- ile" school. Please be careful o.

The document has been given to dhl today.do you think it can arrive here before thursday? Can I cancel my appointment a day to the interview?

For real? Your school wants you to pay in order for them to correct a mistake that they made? Wow.

Thanks! I'm actually going to Purdue University at West Lafayette, Indiana not the Hammond campus.
jimtosam: Congratulations...I think there is something about Purdue..If it's Purdue (Hammond Indianna), you will meet successgreat overthere. Successgreat was an old time contributor here. Successgreat too never spent 2mins with the VO. Immediately he mentioned Purdue University, the interview stopped..Though, they are highly ranked in Engineering and they gat great alumni like Neil Armstrong (the first human being to step on the moon)

Good evening. My visa was approved this afternoon. I went to the lagos embassy. The interview was less than 2 mins and I was not asked to present any documents. (Lucky me- my bank statement had only 2 million, required amount is 8 million).

Here is how the dialogue went.

VO: good morning, please pass me your documents
Me: good morning *i pass documents*
VO: where are you going?
Me: Purdue University, Indiana
VO: *looks at my passport and notices I have 2 I-20s* are you are you a renewal applicant?
Me: something like that. I studied at Purdue from 2008 till 2010, and now I'm going to complete my bachelor's degree.
VO: why did you stop in 2010?
Me: my mother, who was my sponsor passed away.
VO: I'm sorry
Me: its ok
VO: who is paying for your studies?
Me: my godfather
VO: does he live here in Nigeria or in the US
Me: here in Nigeria
VO: how long have you been in nigeria since you came back?
Me: 3 years
VO: *looking through my passport and checking out previous visas I have been issued* how many countries have you visited?
Me: 2, the US and the UK
VO: *looks at old student visa* how old were you when you started at Purdue University
Me: 15
VO: really? That's crazy!
Me: *smile* I try, I try
VO: *smiles* ok, your visa has been approved. You can pick it up on tuesday.
Me: thanks. *walk away*

No documents were requested. I think this is because I am pretty well traveled (4 prior US visas, 5 prior UK visas) and because I've studied in the US previously. It was pretty cool. Oh and I saw Tony Tetuila at the embassy.

The strange thing is that I didn't get the green slip, just the pick up information letter. I hope this won't be a problem. Anyhow, that's it. Best of luck to all the others.

Kunsoft: i arrived the embassy few minutes to 7:30 and lucky for me i saw some nldrs that allow me to enter the line instead of joining the long queue. we followed the process all through as if na BRT we won enter. i was called by my name on mic to report to a particular window while we were waiting to biometric. i was told that my DS 160 is not loadings the could not access my information Gbam! ( i used the old DS 160 print out, i re-printed it). what next? i was given yellow paper 90minute time out paper. she said i should go out and fill another DS 160 within 90mins. the tout said i should pay 5k to fill so that they can help me fill it. 'ole'. i quickly went to Obalende to fill and print out new one then join the queue inside.
since 7:20am to about 2:00pm

NOW THE INTERVIEW
Me: Afternoon ma, how is ur family doing?
VO: fine thank you with a big smile
VO: your documents please
Me: Sure
VO: i can see you are going for study Why UCO
Me: bla bla bla
VO: good who is your sponsor?
Me: My brother
VO: where is he working?
Me: CEO of a Logistic Management Firm
VO: How much is his salary per month
Me: 400k (Did not expect this question oo )
VO:Is he a Graduate
Me: Yes
VO: Can i see the statement
Me: First tender the DORM acct with 13k then Naira acct with 2.4m
VO: Check page to page. then started typing as if she is writing article
VO: Is he married?
Me: Yes (red flag that i noticed)
Me: trying to read her hands on keep board grin
VO: sorry brought out the delay form
Me: i told her ma this is the 3rd can you please tell me where the problem is?
VO: She said the form will explain that
Me: Ma i have enough of this form at home at least 2. this is my 3rd attempt.
VO: she was passionate. then excuse me and went to meet that old man. i guess he is their head. they chat for like 3 minutes
VO: she came back and said is it sufficient fund and she has made her decision. you can re-apply.
Me: Thank you very much ma. waka. grin
I am so sorry. Since it is just a matter of funds, I'm confident that with a buffed up bank statement you'll get the visa. There are ways to obtain this that you should be aware of. My own bank statement is only 2.6 million (required is 8 million). I am a bit worried, should I go for a later date and get a better statement or risk it? My interview is on thursday.

My brother its a long story. Insufficient funds. That was what she told me boldly.

Kunsoft, I really am so sorry to hear this. Don't be discouraged, try again with another buffed up bank statement and I'm sure you'll get it. There is still time to get a date before fall semester resumes. Don't give up.

My own sponsor's statement is not up to the required amount, but I'm going to go all the same and try next tomorrow. *fingers crossed* I would really appreciate it if you would upload your interview because it would really help me.

Thanks and keep your chin up.

Please Pals help me out on this.
I would like to have a name of a university where a Nigerian can study medicine and surgery as an undergraduate student. The name of the University and her website would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey there,

I don't think it is possible to study medicine as an undergrad in the USA. I believe that in the States, you study something related to medicine as an undergraduate (example: Biochemistry) then go to Medical school. I might, however, be wrong.

I know that in Germany it is possible to study medicine as an undergrad straight and you don't have to learn German. Someone I know is considering doing that.

I'd like to wish all those who have their interviews coming up this month the best of luck (I'm one of them).

GboyegaD:

He likes the school and can afford it I suppose.

Hello everyone. I'd just like to ask if it is possible for someone to transfer from somewhere like IIT to an equally good school in the US and get a scholarship.

From the little research I did, it appears to be all but impossible for transfer students to get scholarships unless they go for lower tier schools. Is this the case for real, or have I been looking in all the wrong places?

If transfer students actually cannot get tangible (50-100%) scholarships in the US, would one of the gurus here be so kind as to suggest a course of action for such a transfer student (me)?

Does anyone know if international transfers to Canada are workable and if scholarships can be found? Is such a course of action (transferring to Canada) advisable?

A little about my case- I have been admitted into Purdue University for Fall 2013 to continue my studies in Industrial Engineering. I have already spent some time studying at Purdue, and am back home to renew my student visa. While my sponsor can afford Purdue's $45k tuition, I'd like to transfer to a cheaper (but still good school) if possible to save money and as a hedge for the future.

The way I see it, if I get into a school and pay $30k tuition (or less) the difference can be saved for when I come back home after my studies (or to finance my master's degree).

I'd really appreciate any advise.

Thanks in advance, and good luck to all those who haven't gone for their interviews.

Hello everyone.

I've read what has been posted on this thread from page 1 in preparation for my own visa interview. I would like to thank all those who have contributed to this thread- its awfully nice of you to help others like this.

I've been admitted to Purdue University to study Industrial Engineering (Bachelors) this fall and I have filled my DS-160 form and scheduled a visa interview. I live in Lagos, but unfortunately there were no dates available- I was astonished by this fact. I went ahead to book an appointment in Abuja for the 13th of June, but going all the way will be rather expensive. I plan on canceling the Abuja appointment and rescheduling an appointment in Lagos if dates become available.

A few pages back someone suggested that a sort of Lagos Visa Appointment Date Notification Service be started on the thread. I'd like to voice my support for this idea. If anyone notices that dates become available in Lagos, please email me on aabiola"at"purdue"dot"edu.

Thanks a bunch. Good luck to all.
