Politics / Boko-Haram Has Destroyed 50 Catholic Churches In Borno by Walecole74: 12:30pm On Mar 18, 2013
According to the parish priest of Christ the King Catholic Parish, Kurudu, Abuja, Rev. Fr. Jerome Ituah (OCD), the Boko Haram sect has destroyed 50 out of the 52 Catholic churches in Maiduguri Catholic Diocese of Borno State.

Ituah, who was speaking yesterday during a church service, revealed that he was in Maiduguri during the week and that Catholic faithfuls, were forced to conduct services under the sun and rain, because of the destruction carried out by the Islamists.

“Out of the 52 catholic churches in Maiduguri diocese, 50 of them have been destroyed by Boko Haram. Yet the faithful are not discouraged of their faith. You would always see them worshipping under rain and sun in open places at the site of their destroyed places of worship,” he stated.

He also encourgaed the Catholics in Kurudu, to continually pray for their Maiduguri counterparts and those in other regions, where insurgency is a threat.

Where is this country heading to and some people are clamouring amnesty for this group?

Politics / Re: Do We Still Have Police In Nigeria by Walecole74: 3:24pm On Mar 12, 2013
My recommendation to the Nigerian Government are the following,

1) Create a division of labor within the Nigerian police force
-Create an anti-terrorism unit with the Nigerian police force
-Create an investigation unit with the Nigerian police
-Create an intelligence unit with the Nigerian police
-Create a peace keeping unit with the Nigerian police force
-Create a research and analysis unit within the Nigerian police force
-Create a patrol unit with the Nigerian police force

each of these units will have different levels of qualification for entry

2) Establish Zonal police headquarters, because i believe that each zone of the country have different types of crimes that are prevalent

3) Establish proper training guidelines that have to be strictly adhered to by all police officer's

4) Establish a training system were every two years based on your rank and division you go for additional training ranging from 3months to 9months

5) Establish a Government backed Fund for Mortgage, Education, and Medical Expenses whereby every policeman is guaranteed loans for these three basic expenses at very low rates for them and their immediate family members.

6) Offer a substantial compensation for any police officer killed on duty.

7) rebuild every police station in the country, assuring that each police station is properly maintained and all amenities available.

cool Establish a Community/Police annual event where the people within the Community and the police can interract in a fun and relaxed enviroment, while discussing community affecting issues.

9) Build Jails and prisons all over the country that are had to break out of, world standard.

there are many more things that i would recommend, but if the so far are implemented, we can at least solve 40% of our problems.
I also believe that some of these should apply to all security forces, including the military, wink

p/s: some of these might already be in place, but not being implemented effectively.

LAST WEEK I SAID IT HERE THAT THEY SHOULD JUST DISBAND THIS NIGERIAN POLICE COS THEY LACK WOT IT TAKES TO POLICE DESPITE ALL FUNDS CHANNELED IN THAT DIRECTION, IT BEATS ME, SERIOUSLY. IF AT THE TOP LEVEL, THEY CAN'T CARRY OUT A SIMPLE TASK LIKE INVESTIGATION WHICH IS ONE OF THEIR STATUTORY FUNCTIONS, THEN ITS A SHAME...WOT WILL THE JUNIOR OFFICERS DO, IT THEREBY MEANS WE WILL BE HAVING ALOT OF rooster AND BULL STORIES EMANATING FROM INVESTIGATION REPORTS AND SUBSEQUENT REOMMENDATION FOR PROMOTION AND INCREASE OF ALLOWANCES...MTCWWWWWW, RUBBISH...URGENT STEPS NEED TO BE TAKEN TO CORRECT THE INADEQUACIES OF THE POLICE, IF NOT SO..CASALA GO BUST O

Haba u harsh o. Though Nigerian can no longer sleep with their two eyes closed anymore because of the absolute failure of the NPF. How do u expect a member of the NPF to carry out an investigation, which he or she is not knowledgeable of? Its like asking a primary school pupil what is PYTHAGORAS THEOREM?. The NPF lacks expertise and the question is that, are they ready to even change and carry out their duties accordingly?...Mehn! its shameful that Nigeria does not have police...like i was saying, i think what they need is a total overhaul of the system cos if they disband them, trust me, we are knocking on the door of an increase crime rate in the country. grin grin grin grin
Politics / NURTW Leader Tokyo Arrested In Ibadan by Walecole74: 9:36am On Dec 06, 2012
THERE was anxiety in motor parks in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Wednesday, as policemen from the state police command picked up the embattled leader of the state chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Lateef Akinsola, also known as Tokyo.

As early as 7.00 a.m, armoured personnel carriers (APCs) were sighted at Iwo Road Interchange, with a full complement of armed policemen from Egbeda Local Government Area, as well as on the Ring Road.

Confirming Tokyo’s arrest, the state Deputy Commissioner of Police, Clement Adoda, in a statement made available to the Nigerian Tribune, urged members of the public not to entertain any fear.

Adoda, in the three-paragraph statement, said the police were aware that “some disgruntled elements might be planning to disrupt public peace, following Tokyo’s arrest.

He advised people to go about their lawful businesses without fear of being molested, adding that men and officers of the command were prepared to contain and deal with trouble makers.

“The command is combat ready to deal with such a situation and any troublemaker would be made to face the full wrath of the law, as the interest of Oyo State takes precedence over any other consideration.

“The arrested Alhaji Lateef Akinsola is, at present, with the police undergoing interrogation in respect of pending criminal cases against him, for which he was declared wanted by the police.

“Outcome of the investigation will determine subsequent police actions,” the statement said.

Politics / States, States, More States by Walecole74: 10:25am On Oct 31, 2012
SENATE President David Bonaventure Alechenu Mark makes sure he says things importantly. States would be created, he said. It sounds like a fait accompli. He must have figured it out, the States and added the political cost of creating them.

“Creation of additional States can only make government closer to the people contrary to the view in certain quarters that we do not need additional States in the federation,” Mark said in Ijebu-Ode, where he was attending a festival.

His thesis is wrong. States do not make governments closer to the people. Governments are not close to the people even in the state capitals where governments are located. Are the local governments close to the people? Closeness of governments to the people derives from a decision of those in charge to relate to their people, notice their challenges and tackle them. It is not an issue related to number of States. If 774 local governments are not close to the people what difference would more States make?

That is the question for Nairalanders...

Politics / Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan Received Medal Of Honor In Sierra Leone by Walecole74: 1:53pm On Oct 30, 2012
The President of the Republic of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan was in Sierra Leone yesterday where he received the nation’s most prestigious award. The Order of the Republic Grand Commander of Sierra Leone is reserved exclusively for foreign heads of state. The two nations have strong bi-lateral, cultural, and economic ties.

Politics / Igbo Introduced Tribalism To Nigerian Politics-fani-kayode by Walecole74: 12:11pm On Oct 30, 2012
''Igbo domination of Nigeria is only a matter of time''- Charles Onyeama, a prominent igbo lawyer and member of the Central Legislative Council, 1945. (Pg. 204 ''Ethnic Politics In Kenya and Nigeria'' by Godfrey Mwakikagile).

''It would appear that the God of Africa has created the Igbo nation to lead the children of Africa from the bondage of ages ....'' - Dr Azikiwe, President of the Pan-Igbo Federal Union. (The West African Pilot of July 8, 1949).

The first statement from Charles Onyeama, which was made in 1945, was the first overtly tribal and divisive comment that was made and recorded in the politics of southern Nigeria in our history. That is where and when tribalism in the south actually started. After that comment and as a direct reaction to it, the yoruba established the ''Egbe Omo Oduduwa'' to further and protect yoruba interests and after that came the formation of the Action Group in 1948.

The second statement from Zik, which was made in 1949 (and which clearly shows that the great Zik of Africa had forgotten that the NCNC was not an igbo party at the beginning and that it had in fact been established by an upper class and very well educated yoruba man by the name of Sir Herbert Macauly, one of the famous ''Black Victorians'' from the Lagos Colony, and who, at his death bed, was gracious enough to hand over the leadership of the party to him even though he was igbo) confirmed that tribalism was here to stay in the south and that ever since that time the igbo had an agenda to dominate others. This sentiment and this unfortunate igbocentric attitude is what cost Zik the Premiership of the Western Region in 1953 when the NCNC narrowly lost to the Action Group.

It is clear from this that if you want to know who started tribalism in southern politics and the politics of the southern protectorate of Nigeria it was not the yoruba or the southern minorities but the igbo. The excesses of the Igbo State Union and their treatment of the southern minorities and the yoruba from 1943 till 1967 was completely unacceptable. The rest of the south were prepared to accept the igbo as equals with open arms but they were not prepared to be politically dominated or conquered by them.

Worst still the first coup in the history of Nigeria, which was the Jan 15th 1966 coup d'etat led by Major Ifejuana and Major Kaduna Nzeogwu, was essentially an igbo coup and an igbo grab for power. I say this because 95 per cent of those that took part in it were igbo and 99 per cent of the political and military leaders that were brutally murdered during it's execution were non-igbo. It was this coup and it's sheer brutality that led to the even more brutal northern officers counter-coup of July 1966 (in which 300 igbo officers were killed in one night including the igbo Head of State, Gen. Aguiyi-Ironsi, and his yoruba host, the Military Governor of the Western Region, Gen. Adekunle Fajuyi who sought to protect him), the pogrom of igbos in the north (in which over 100,000 igbo civilians were killed in a few weeks) and the Nigerian civil war (in which 2 million Nigerians and Biafrans died).

These are the facts of our history. Live and learn. If you want to know who introduced tribalism into southern politics, it was the igbo. If you want to know who carried out the first coup in our country it was the igbo. Having done the painstaking research over a numberof years these are my findings and this is my conclusion.

I will open my wall for a robust discussion and debate on this issue and I will accomodate contributions from even those that are not my fb friends just for this debate. I will accomodate all shades of opinion and contributions from anyone that cares to join in the fray and I want to encourage those that disagree with my findings to state their case. We are all still learning but please take not that any rude or insulting comments will be deleted. This is a historical debate and I would encourage all those that seek to qoute anyone or make any assertions to mention their sources so that we can cross check the facts. Thanks.

Politics / Afe Babalola Opposes Fg’s Plan To Borrow by Walecole74: 3:34pm On Oct 05, 2012
A legal luminary, Chief Afe Babalola, SAN, has raised an objection to the Federal Government’s plan to borrow more money to fund some projects.

Babalola made his position known in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday during the conferment of an award on him by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria.

The lawyer, who is also the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, lamented that corruption had crippled the country and that the extra money to be borrowed would give corrupt officials more opportunities to loot the treasury.

President Goodluck Jonathan had recently asked the Senate to approve $7.9bn for pipeline projects under the 2012-2014 External Borrowing Plan.

The Debt Management Office had on Tuesday during a meeting with the House of Representatives committees given an indication that the country’s total debt profile might hit $25bn by 2015.

But Babalola said, “Nigeria has no reason to borrow a kobo. We know how much money we make from oil apart from the one stolen on the sea. Borrowing will continue to undermine the development of Nigeria.

“The government continues to borrow money for the future generations and you (Nigerians) do not cry out. Despite the huge debt profile of the country and the money made from oil, the railway system does not exist anymore, roads are very bad and education is not well funded.”

Politics / Juyinlo Toluwalase: How US Embassy Is Discriminating Against Pregnant Women by Walecole74: 10:47am On Oct 03, 2012
The United States’ embassy in Nigeria seems to have perfected the art of denying well-meaning and legitimate non-immigrant Nigerian mothers visa for reasons best known to it. At the end of visa interview sessions, what one hears is, ‘’You are not qualified at this time’’!

Women of child-bearing age are asked questions such as: Are you pregnant at this time? How many children do you have? Do you plan to have more children? And if the response to any of these questions is in the affirmative, then the next set of questions may be: Do you plan to have the baby in America? Can you afford to pay the medical bills? You are probably asked to show evidence and even after showing evidence you are told mostly that you do not qualify at this time or that you should reapply after having your baby.

Please note that there have been cases when female applicants did not even know they were pregnant during the interview and later discovered in the weeks to follow! Obviously, a married woman who is sexually active can become pregnant at anytime even with the use of contraceptives. Asking these kinds of questions during interviews is not a way to determine the purpose of the interview, which is to determine if the visa applicant is an intending immigrant. Finding out if an applicant is pregnant or plan to become pregnant soon, has nothing to do with the application but is an unnecessary invasion of privacy.

Moreover in Africa, questions like these are very sensitive as people like to keep such information private until the pregnancy becomes advanced. If one may ask, is the visa meant to be an agreement to celibacy in marriage? In my own case, I had used my American visa many times for holiday and even business before deciding to make use of the medical facilities available in the US to have my baby. I also decided to do this because I developed some complications during the pregnancy and decided to seek better health care. Why then would a consular officer overlook all the business transactions done and deny an applicant for the simple reason of having a baby in America?

Politics / Fani-kayode: ”nigeria Is Just A Toilet Of A Country Where Evil Reigns”lord Apsle by Walecole74: 11:54am On Oct 02, 2012
Lord Apsley and I were colleagues at Harrow School in England approximately 36 years ago. I have never forgotten his uncharitable remarks about Nigeria which led to a heated arguement between us. At that time I found it ironic, and I still do, that this quintessential member of the English upper class not only had the nerve to say such things to me about my country but that he could say it with such confidence. My response to him was that if Nigeria was indeed a ”toilet where evil reigns” then it was a toilet that was created by his British forefathers who not only dumped the evil there by defecating in it but who also refused to wash their hands, to flush and to leave the toilet after they had finished. My point was simple and it was that Nigeria was as much their mess as it was ours. For a young man who had been born into wealth and power and who had been brought up to believe that ”Brittania” had civilised the world and had brought nothing but immense benefits to the natives of her colonies, he found my response most disconcerting. I have never forgotten what he said about my beloved country on that occasion. It was painful and regrettable.

Yet I look at what has happened to us in the last 52 years of our existence as an independent nation and what we have suffered in the last 98 years since the 1914 amalglamation of the northern and southern protectorates and I really do wonder. If the truth must be told, things have not gone too well for us. I was born in the same year as we gained our independence and as I ponder and reflect on the last 52 years all I see is violence, bloodshed, dashed hopes, lost opportunities and shattered dreams. I see a brutal civil war in which two million people died. I see a string of violent military coups and repressive military dictatorships and I see suspicion and division between the peoples of the north and the south. I see dangerous tensions between the numerous ethnic nationalities, continous strife and sectarian violence. I see church bombings, the slaughter of the innocents, islamic fundamentalist rebellions, battle-ready ethnic militias and bloodthirsty local war lords. I see economic degradation, decaying infrastructures, environmental disasters and untold suffering and hardship. And finally I see poverty and unemployment, poor quality leadership and a dysfunctional semi-failed state which is still struggling to find it’s true identity. If this sounds like a scene from Dante’s hell please forgive me but this is what I see.

Politics / National Honours Awardees Stranded In Abuja by Walecole74: 6:12am On Sep 17, 2012
National honours awardees stranded in Abuja …as FG fails to provide accommodation, flight tickets.

MOST of the recipients of the 2012 National Honours were stranded in Abuja on Sunday as the Federal Government failed to provide them accommodation as it was the practice in the past.

The honours are expected to be conferred on the recipients on Monday (today) at the International Conference Centre, Abuja. A total of 149 recipients will be conferred with national honours with Chairman of Globacom, Mike Adenuga, receiving the highest honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger.

Most recipients, especially Abuja non-residents, who arrived in Abuja on Sunday evening discovered that the government made no provision for their accommodation and flight tickets.

During former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, all awardees were each provided with accommodation or N50,000 in lieu of it.

Politics / GEJ Has Done Well -PDP by Walecole74: 2:23pm On Aug 15, 2012
Peoples Democratic Party on Tuesday commended President Goodluck Jonathan for his contribution to national development.

A statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, said any objective assessment of Jonathan would reveal what his administration had achieved in the last 14 months.

The party said efforts by some politicians to “tar the PDP with non-performance brush” was beclouding their vision to the commendable efforts of government.

The statement was a reaction to the accusations of non-performance levelled against the President by different people and groups.

But the PDP said Jonathan would continue to lead the country well.

The statement read in part, “We have no doubt whatsoever the President is on course and will continue to deliver on the PDP promises to the people of Nigeria.

“Quite a lot has been achieved in the various sectors and there is no gain saying the government needs the continued support and prayers of Nigerians to do more.”

The statement said though it was the right of every Nigerian, especially the opposition, to assess and interpret government efforts to suit their biases.

The statement added, “Let’s remain partisan; let’s remain politically plural for that is the true essence of democracy but let the greater interest of the nation remain prime in all our engagements.

Buhari disclosed this in a chat with newsmen in Lafia yesterday, when he paid a courtesy visit on the Nasarawa State Governor, Umaru Al-Makura at the Presidential lodge just before he attended the wedding of the former Minister of Works, Hassan Lawal.

He said that election malpractices as well as time constraint hindered his party from clinching the presidency in the last general elections.

He also said that CPC was liaising with other political parties other than the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in merger talks that would bring CPC and other opposition parties together ahead of the 2015 elections".

Buhari has been oppurtuned to lead this country, but he failed and now he has cojoined with Bakare in whom followers have lost trust. Lets us beware of this "Aki n Pawpaw" antics. Is "must rule syndrome" the way?

Bakare is becoming over ambitious. I think this must rule syndrome has sank into him. Am sure if he had won the last election with his cleric master, he would not be castigating the govt of GEJ in such manner. He really need to be cautioned.

The business of governance has become a matter of pocket affair where our senators now focuses basically on using positions to get anything through a mischievous way and thereby negleting core value system. This is very funny and it's showing the position where the senate members are standing in the governance of this country. To intend impeaching the president just because of their selfish greed is quite alarming and unconstitutional. These people need to be checked... #naijagobeta
