Health / COVID-19: Imo Speaker Orders Lawmaker Out Of Plenary For Sneezing by Witcher(f): 4:18pm On Mar 27, 2020
COVID-19: Imo Speaker orders Lawmaker out of plenary for sneezing
by Praise Olowe 47 seconds a

The speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Collins Chiji has ordered the member representing Nkwerre State Constituency, Mr. Obinna Okwara to leave the hallowed chambers when he suddenly started coughing and sneezing during the plenary.

This came as the speaker also has advised the member representing Owerri North State Constituency, Mr. Philip Ejiogu to observe strict self-isolation following his recent return from the United Kingdom.

At the House’s last plenary for the week, Mr. Okwara’s sudden sneezing caused pandemonium as his colleagues who sat close to him started shifting away from him.

Other lawmakers in the chambers quickly reached out for their nose masks and handkerchiefs and wore them.

When the sneezing became very constant and started distracting the proceedings at the plenary, the speaker ordered Okwara out of plenary, advising him to check himself properly.

The lawmaker was seen walking into his office and never came back to the plenary afterwards.

Earlier on Tuesday, the speaker also ordered the member representing Owerri North State Constituency, Mr. Philip Ejiogu to observe strict self-isolation following his return from the United Kingdom recently.

Ejiogu had returned to the country last week after he had visited the United Kingdom.

He joined his colleagues during the plenary and was seen hugging his colleagues, especially Amara Iwuanyanwu and Uche Ogbuagu who were elected the deputy speaker and majority leader of the house respectively.

According to the speaker, the lawmaker may have been exposed to COVID-19 (Coronavirus) during his visit to London.

Chiji explained during the plenary that the lawmaker may have come in contact with one of the confirmed cases in the United Kingdom, where the virus is spreading faster.

You have not shown hope to Nigerians over COVID-19, PDP tells Buhari By Saawua Terzungwe | Published Date Mar 27, 2020 15:29 PM TwitterFacebookWhatsAppTelegram The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lamented that President Muhammadu Buhari had not demonstrated expected visibility to give hope and direction, as well as douse public apprehension particularly at a time the public space is awash with uncertainties regarding the status of the presidential villa since his Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari tested positive to COVID-19. The PDP in a statement on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, however, commended the organized private sector and corporate bodies for their response in cash donations and other interventions in the efforts to contain and stop further spread of COVID-19 in the country. The party also commended health workers and other public safety functionaries for their sacrifices in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic despite alleged lapses by the federal government which it said allegedly failed in being visible and leading from the front in the effort to combat the scourge. READ: Coronavirus: U.S. now global epicentre with confirmed cases “It would be recalled that following the lethargic approach of the Buhari Presidency, the PDP had taken up the onus in calling on the corporate bodies, the organized business community, research and medical institutions as well as public-spirited individuals to immediately come to the rescue. “The party expresses happiness with the response so far received from the private sector. It urged the authorities to ensure judicious use of the resources while calling on other public-spirited organizations, groups and individuals to join in the overall effort to curtail the impact of the deadly virus in our nation. “The PDP lamented that President Muhammadu Buhari had not demonstrated expected visibility to give hope and direction, as well as douse public apprehension particularly at a time the public space is awash with uncertainties regarding the status of the Presidential villa since his Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari tested positive to COVID-19. “The party however urged Nigerians not to despair over President Buhari’s failure to make himself available in personally leading in the search for solution and regularly addressing the nation on the developments on issues related to the pandemic, like other world leaders. “The PDP expressed optimism that despite such manifest leadership failure at this critical time, our nation will definitely overcome the present challenge with our brotherliness and collective resilient spirit, for which we are known all over the world. “The party therefore called on all Nigerians not to be overcome by fear and anxiety but remain heedful in following health safety directives, personal hygiene and social distancing as well as extending charity to one another, while also praying for divine intervention at this perilous time,” the party said. COVID-19: Nigerians are not cooperating, they are so busy engaging in meaningless criticisms - Lai Mohammed
Posted by Abiolapaul on March 27, 2020 at 11:13am

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has lamented that many Nigerians are not cooperating with the Federal Government in the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic.

According to Mohammed, rather than show appropriate cooperation, many Nigerians are just busy engaging in meaningless criticisms.

The minister stated this during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday while giving an update on the measures being taken by the government to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic. He said:

“Let me say, without mincing words, that we are not getting the kind of cooperation that this moment deserves from Nigerians. Many are busy engaging in meaningless criticisms instead of complying with the stipulated directives to keep people safe.

“Some Nigerians who flew into the country from overseas filled wrong addresses and phone numbers in their forms, making it difficult to trace them when the need arises.

Some Nigerians defied orders to stay away from large gatherings while some religious leaders willfully flouted the directives to ensure social distancing.

“The government is doing its best but we need the citizens to do their best too. We have now gone past the stage of persuasion

COVID-19: Why Nigeria will no longer have president soon – Nnamdi Kanu reacts as Abba Kyari contracts Coronavirus

Published 26 seconds ago on March 26, 2020By John Owen Nwachukwu

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has reacted to the Coronavirus status Abba Kyari, the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari.

DAILY POST reported on Tuesday that the Chief of Staff to the President, who recently returned from Germany, has tested positive for the deadly Coronavirus.

Nnamdi Kanu said that very soon Nigeria will be without a President, because, according to him, COVID-19 “presents the corrupt criminal Fulani cabal in Abuja and their accomplices in the Lagos media with an opportunity to package and send Jubril Al-Sudani back to his country Sudan, because in all probability he too is infected with Corona virus.”

The IPOB leader believes that the current development will expose a lot of secrets at the Presidency, adding that time is running out on Kyari and another person he described as Jubril Al-Sudani.

“The news that Nigeria’s de-facto ‘president’ and head of government Abba Kyari is ill with COVID-19 or COVIK-ONE NINE according to the impostor, presents the corrupt criminal Fulani cabal in Abuja and their accomplices,” he wrote on Facebook.

“It seems this little virus will flush out all the dirty secrets of the Zoo that even the most ardent establishment supporting conspiratorial Nigerian news media will not be able to cover up.

“Time is running out for both the Sudanese impostor, his London based plastic surgeons and all those that foistered him on brainless hapless Nigerians.

Sharing a picture of President Buhari and Abba Kyari, Nnamdi Kanu added, “This is the picture below of a surgically enhanced and heavily made-up Jubril Al-Sudani being escorted by his master, his recruiter, handler and the true unelected ruler of Nigeria Abba Kyari.”

Politics / COVID19: Umahi Bars Ebonyi Indigene Returning From China by Witcher(f): 12:14pm On Mar 25, 2020
Umahi bars Ebonyi indigene returning from China
by Oamen Eromosele

Ebonyi Governor David Umahi has barred a government staff who just returned from China from entering the state.

He said the staff, a driver to one of the members of the state Executive council, was returning to the state from China.

He ordered him to remain in Lagos till the Centre For Disease Control certified him free of coronavirus.

Umahi spoke in Abakaliki, the State Capital in a broadcast address to the people of the state, on measures his administration has taken to fight the scourge.

He said the staff will be in self isolation for at least 14 days and possibly testing against the coronavirus pandemic by NCDC before being allowed back into the state.

He said: ‘A driver of one of our exco members travelled to China last week and then arrived Lagos last night and boarded a car to come here. Everybody spoke to him not to come until my ADC reported to me and I said call him and he came to me.

“I told him, choose between life and death. It is better to sacrifice one person than to endanger everybody because going to China in the wake of very dangerous outbreak is like he has gone to purchase deaths.

“So, we would have made him to die alone. So, he said he didn’t have money. I told him, get a hotel and report yourself to a centre for control of disease in Lagos.

“And so, we are sending money to him to get himself accommodation and report himself there so that they can observe him and test him where necessary but he shouldn’t come at all and I am not joking about it.

“If he comes, I will lock him in his house. This coronavirus is a very dangerous disease and you don’t even know when somebody contracts it. Don’t say it doesn’t matter, it matters a lot.”

The Governor said the State Virology Centre built by his administration is set to commence blood sample testing for the deadly Coronavirus.

According to him, the Virology Centre already has the machine for the testing and will commence full testing operation by April 1 when the test kits will arrive the state.

He said that presently only hospitals in Abuja, Lagos and Edo state have the capacity to test for the virus which was not adequate for a highly populated country like Nigeria

The Governor said that the Virology Centre testing facility will be deployed to test for the virus for the entire South East, parts of South South and also the North Central regions of the country

He said: “we have purchased a number of equipment like Temperature gauge, ventilators and isolation cubicles. Our virology laboratory equipment for lassa fever will be deployed for blood sample testing of suspected Covid-19 patients with symptoms before April 1 when we shall have the test kits”.

“Only three Centres are presently doing the testing in in Nigeria. When ours comes it shall serve the Southeastuth South and even North Central”, he noted

Governnor Umahi also ordered the recall of all retired jealth workers in the state to aid in the fight against the deadly coronavirus.

“All retirees on health are hereby recalled at State and local government area to help in our fight to protect our people”.

Governor Umahi noted that the state government has banned gathering of more than 50 persons other than those in the essential services centres such as markets , banks amd hotels.

He said the state government has deployed security agencies to monitor all essential services centres for compliance.

“Any service Centre that fails to observe these measures will be severally punished including compulsory shutdown, penalty and arrest of Chief Executives of such centres”, he warned.

92 Chad soldiers killed in 'deadliest' Boko Haram attack
Attack on soldiers on the Boma peninsula on Sunday lasted at least seven hours and reinforcements were also attacked.

At least 92 soldiers from Chad have been killed in the deadliest-ever attack by the Boko Haram armed group on the country's military forces, President Idriss Deby said on Tuesday.

"We lost 92 of our soldiers, non-commissioned officers and officers," the president said of the attack overnight on Sunday in Boma.

"It’s the first time we have lost so many men," he added, after visiting the site of the incident in Lac province, which borders Niger and Nigeria.

The attack on soldiers on the Boma peninsula lasted at least seven hours and reinforcements sent to help out were also hit, one soldier told AFP news agency.

He said 24 army vehicles were destroyed, including armoured vehicles and Boko Haram carried off weapons stolen from the military in speedboats.

"The enemy has hit at our defences hard in this zone," a senior officer said.

The attack is part of an expanding armed campaign in the vast, marshy Lake Chad area, where the borders of Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria converge.

INSIDE STORY: Has Boko Haram been defeated? (25:00)
Boko Haram launched an armed campaign in Nigeria in 2009 before beginning incursions in its eastern neighbours.

Earlier on Tuesday, Nigeria's military reported that scores of Nigerian soldiers were also killed in the northeastern state of Borno near the border with Chad.

The attackers used rocket-propelled grenades and other heavy weaponry in the attack on the village of Gorgi on Monday evening.

It was not immediately clear who the attackers were, but fighters from Boko Haram and the ISIL (ISIS) West Africa Province groups are active in the region.

Boko Haram has stepped up its attacks in recent months on the islands of the Lake Chad Basin.

Since 2015, countries in the area have cooperated in the Multinational Joint Force, a regional coalition engaged around Lake Chad with the help of local residents formed into vigilante groups.

Boko Haram's decade-long armed campaign has so far killed 36,000 people and displaced nearly two million in northeastern Nigeria, according to the United Nations.

Politics / Operation Second Eleven: Nigerian Army Prepares For Lockdown Over Coronavirus by Witcher(f): 9:09pm On Mar 24, 2020
Authorities of the Nigeria Army are preparing for a lockdown following the outbreak and continued spread of Coronavirus in the country.

In a classified document from the office of Chief of Army Staff, Yusuf Buratai, addressed to Army Headquarters and seen by SaharaReporters on Tuesday, personnel were advised to be on the alert as they could be deployed to various parts of the country in the coming days to help in the fight against Coronavirus in Nigeria.

The document further said that the army may likely get involved in an operation codenamed SECOND ELEVEN to help stop the spread of the virus.

The document signed by Lt Gen L.O. Adeosun, ordered commanders at all levels to suspend all events involving large gatherings such as meetings, briefings and conferences.

It also ordered suspensions of all foreign courses, conferences, seminars and other overseas trips by personnel.

The memo reads, “All Nigeria Army schools and training centres including the Army War College are to be closed down, while the closing hour for all formations and units has been pegged to 4:00pm except for those on essential duties.

“Planning on lease of excavators, truck, water tankers and other relevant vehicles to aid OP SECOND ELEVEN in the area of possible mass burial, water and essential food/drug supplies, forceful transfer of the sick to the hospital, enforcement of government movement restriction order, etc will be part of it.”

The activation of Op SECOND ELEVEN will see military personnel securing major food stores and government storage facilities for essential goods from looting, while also coordinating with the police and other law enforcement agencies in enforcing the restriction of movement and other directives from government.

While ordering immediate suspension of all leave and passes, Nigeria Army personnel are directed to be on maximum security alert and be ready for deployment as may be required.

“Commanders are to equally commence necessary training and drills in anticipation of possible activation of OP SECOND ELEVEN,” the memo states.

The memo, copied to all military formations across the country, admonishes personnel to abide strictly by the preventive guidelines issued by health authorities while urging anyone with symptoms of COVID-19 to report to the nearest military medical post for checks.

Health / Covid19: When You Die Of The Coronavirus, You Die Alone by Witcher(f): 7:22pm On Mar 24, 2020
Opinion
When You Die of the Coronavirus, You Die Alone
Containing a pandemic means keeping visitors out of the I.C.U. My patients will suffer in solitary confinement.

BOSTON — As an I.C.U. doctor I’m used to giving bad news, but I was not prepared for this.

I paused outside my patient’s room to watch her for a moment. She lay on the bed, tethered to a ventilator by the tracheostomy tube in her neck. Her husband sat in a small plastic chair beside her with his hand on her leg, smiling at some silly sitcom playing on the TV. I hesitated a beat. And then I entered.

I had to tell him. There was no way to soften the blow. The hospital is changing its rules, I said. No more visitors. When you leave today, you both need to say goodbye.

I watched their faces shift. My patient’s breathing quickened, and her ventilator alarm sounded. Her husband quickly moved his hand to her shoulder and her breaths slowed; the alarms silenced. He knew how to calm her. He had been there through all of it — hospitalizations for cystic fibrosis, the transplant, the bouts of rejection. When we took away her voice with the tracheostomy tube, he spoke for her.

But now, as we tighten our protocols to protect our patients from the threat of Covid-19, she’s alone. Here in my hospital, as in so many others throughout the country, we’ve banished most visitors. It’s a tough decision that leaves our patients to suffer through their illnesses in a medical version of solitary confinement. And I’m worried for them. Because those of us on the front lines simply don’t have a plan for this.

The isolation is, of course, even more profound for those who are infected with, or are being evaluated for, coronavirus. I took care of one such patient who was intubated when he started coughing up blood on the general medical floor. He was alone in his room, on FaceTime with his daughter, when it started. So that is the last image she has of her father — on a shaky computer screen, blood staining his hospital gown. I offer her updates over the phone, but the truth is that I am not sure when she will be able to see him again.

Or even if she will be able to see him. The devastating image of the lonely deaths of coronavirus patients in Italy hangs over us all. Talking with one of the nurse practitioners in our hospital’s new Covid-19 I.C.U. one recent night, I asked what worried her most. “Patients dying alone,” she replied quickly.

A doctor next to her nodded in sad agreement. On a recent shift, he had intubated an elderly husband and wife, both of whom had severe respiratory failure from coronavirus. Their daughter asked if she could come in to see them. Though we will make exceptions for many end-of-life visits, in this case, he had to say no — they all lived together, the daughter had a fever herself, and as a result could risk infecting other hospitalized patients. Which means that if her parents die of this, they will do so in separate sterile hospital rooms, far from anyone who loves them.

So it’s up to us, the health care workers who are seeing these patients at the front lines, to find ways to maintain connection, to balance our fear with tenderness. This won’t be easy. I think of myself as the kind of doctor who sits at a bedside, who holds a hand, who explains what is going on slowly and gently even to my intubated patients because I can’t know what they will remember. I want to be the doctor who is always willing to spend a few extra minutes despite being stressed or rushed.
