Former aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayode celebrates ex president, Goodluck Jonathan on his 62nd birthday. He wrote;

Happy birthday to President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, a profoundly good man, a kindhearted and selfless leader, a man of peace and compassion and a man that history has already vindicated.
You have been as constant as the northern star in all your endeavours, in standing for decency and truth and in refusing to react to the vile provocations and insults of your numerous detractors .
You sir are the quintessential gentleman: considerate, restrained, calm even in stormy waters, faithful to the cause of justice, freedom and our nation, inspirational and exemplary in all your ways, kind to a fault and confident and focused about the future of our people.
You still have so much to offer Nigeria and I know that you will still play a key role sometime in the future. I am proud to be associated with you, I regard you as my leader and I count you as one of my most trusted and loyal brothers and friends.

God bless you now and always and may He grant you many more years of peace, health, joy and wealth.
From generation to generation your name shall be celebrated and history and posterity shall be kind to you.

Your star shall never dim and your legacy shall remain as solid as the rock of Gibralter far into the distant future.
Thank you for giving us hope, courage and strength. Thank you for your constant concern, love, compassion and kindness.
Happy birthday Mr. President. Have a wonderful day.

Politics / Imo Guber: Gov. Ihedioha Floors Okorocha’s In-law, APC, APGA In Court by zainam: 6:31pm On Nov 19, 2019
The Appeal Court on Tuesday, upheld the election of Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha.

The court delivered the judgment following an appeal filed by the Action Alliance, All Progressives Grand Alliance, AA, and the All Progressives Congress, APC, challenging the election of Ihedioha.

All appellants argued in their appeals that Ihedioha did not obtain the constitutionally required one-quarter of votes cast in at least, two-thirds of the 27 local government areas of the state, as provided under Section 179 of the Constitution.

They urged the court to set aside the decision of the tribunal and declare them winner of the election.

Alternatively, the appellants prayed the court to order a rerun.

There is however popular allegation that the members, numbering over 20, were arrested by the security agencies.

Those affected include Dr. John Ayodele aka Delex, Hon. Jones Daniel, Hon. Olajuwon Michael (Neta) and Hon. Rotimi Ajayi (Rosco). They were said to have been arrested by men of Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS in the wee hours of Friday.

An eye witness who caved anonymity said the men were arrested from the house of Ayodele, a community leader and strong supporter the PDP candidate, Engr. Musa Wada. He explained that those arrested with Ayodele chose to stay in his house “because they considered the place safe.”

Politics / Obaseki Proposes N34bn Welfare Package For Workers In 2020 by zainam: 6:17am On Nov 15, 2019
Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state has earmarked the sum of N34 billion for workers’ welfare in the 2020 budget.

The fund is part of the state’s 2020 budget proposal of N177.601 billion he presented to the State House of Assembly on Wednesday.

He said the fund was indication of his “commitment to implement the new minimum wage and building capacity of actors within government bureaucracy.”

Top on the priority of the budget estimate christened ‘Budget of Consolidation’ are workers welfare, education, infrastructure, health, industrialisation, sports, security, pension and gratuities.

The workers’ welfare projection represents 31 percent increase in allocations for personnel cost compared to the 2019 fiscal year.

The budget comprises N85.539 billion for recurrent and N92.062 billion for capital expenditure, based on a $55 per barrel bench mark for crude oil and average daily production of 1.8m barrels per day as well as an increase in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR),

A breakdown of the budget showed that Security Trust Fund got N2 billion; Pension and Gratuities, N14 billion; Contribution to the State Health Insurance Scheme, N1 billion; Primary Health Care Reform, N1 billion.

Others are: the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (Edo-BEST) programme, N8 billion; Constituency Development Programme, N6 billion; National Sports Festival, N3 billion; and the Industrial Park, which will gulp N3 billion.

Crime / Four Senior Immigration Officers Kidnapped In Rivers by zainam: 4:58pm On Nov 12, 2019
Four senior officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) were on Monday morning kidnapped on Bonny waterway in Rivers State.

An indigene of coastal Bonny, the headquarters of Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers, confided in our correspondent that the immigration personnel left Bonny for Port Harcourt, the state capital for documentation and other official matters at NIS’ headquarters when pirates attacked them on the high sea.

They were said to have been whisked away in a Commando-like operation.

The source revealed that the boat’s driver was allowed to go after personnel of the para-military agency were moved into the higher-capacity speed boat, which immediately sped off.

The Bonny native also stated that no demand for ransom has been made stated shoot sporadically into the air to prevent being challenged or accosted by the security agents on patrol.

Bonny Island, by the Atlantic Ocean, is the base of Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG), the crude oil export terminal of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) and Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited’s (MPN’s) export terminal for crude oil, condensate and Natural Gas Liquid (NGL).

The strategic Bonny/Bodo-Ogoni road with many bridges, a partnership between the Federal Government and NLNG, is being handled by construction giant, Julius Berger Nigeria Limited.

Besides the use of boats, Bonny can also be accessed through expensive helicopters or aircraft with about 60 seats, which the functional airstrip can accommodate.

In view of the criminal activities on Bonny waterway, most people prefer travelling with NLNG’s two luxury/executive and secure boats with air conditioners, which are usually booked in advance, leading to a busy jetty located behind the newly-built corporate headquarters of the gas company in Port Harcourt, following NLNG’s 2011 relocation of its head office from Lagos.

Bonny route is one of the most dangerous waterways in the Niger Delta with frequent attacks by daring and fully-armed sea pirates, who kidnap or dispossess passengers of their cash, phones, other valuables and most times remove the expensive engines of the regular speed boats with drivers left with no choice but to use paddles to move the boats to the shores.

Beautiful ladies/women are also regularly raped in the boats on the high sea by the criminals despite the patrols with gunboats by security operatives.

Rivers Police Spokesman, Nnamdi Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), couldn’t be reached for comment on the development.

Text messages to his mobile line and WhatsApp messages have not been replied.

NYSC / Corpers De-Kitted And Evicted From Ebonyi Camp For Refusing To Wear Trousers by zainam: 7:17pm On Nov 09, 2019
Two members of the 2019 National Youth Service Corps Batch C Stream currently undergoing the three-week orientation exercise in Ebonyi State have been sent home from camp for refusing to wear trousers.

A statement from the spokesperson of the NYSC in the state, Ngozi Ukwuoma, listed the corps members as Okafor Love Obianuju with registration number EB/19C/0523 and Odji Oritsetsolaye (EB/19C/0530).

According to the statement, they were spotted by the Camp Director, Isu Josephine, and her team during her routine morning inspection, wearing white T-shirts and skirts.

“When they were accosted and interrogated, they disclosed that they could not wear the white shorts and the trousers given to them by the NYSC since it was against their faith,” the statement read.

“Efforts were, however, made by the office of the Camp Director to make them see reason why they must obey the rules and regulations guiding the orientation and NYSC, but all efforts to do that proved futile”, the statement said

The spokesperson narrated that after efforts to make them change their minds were rebuffed, the matter was officially reported and the proceedings for de-kitting were initiated.

“The corps members were queried and subsequently made to face the camp court, where they were found guilty, having made it categorically clear that they were ready to bear the consequences of their actions”, she said.

Mrs Ukwuoma noted that the court recommendations were submitted to the camp Management and the Camp Director was directed to de-kit the Corps Members.

“They were de-kitted in the presence of security agents, who also escorted them to the gate as they left the camp”, the spokesperson added.

Politics / Blackout As Power Grid Suffers Total Collapse Twice In Four Hours by zainam: 3:29pm On Nov 09, 2019
The nation’s power grid experienced a total collapse twice in four hours, plunging consumers across the country into blackout.

The grid, which is being managed by government-owned Transmission Company of Nigeria, has continued to suffer system collapse over the years amid a lack of spinning reserve that is meant to forestall such occurrences.

Eko Electricity Distribution Plc, one of the nation’s distribution companies, disclosed that the grid collapsed at 11:15pm on Friday and 3:15am on Saturday.

“At 2315hrs, we experienced a system collapse across all transmission stations. Supply was received at 0315hrs. Sadly, at 0438hrs, the system collapsed again. TCN and our team are working to restore supply. Kindly bear with us,” the Disco said on its Twitter handle.

Another Disco, Jos Electricity Distribution Plc, announced to its customers that “there is power outage in all our franchise states due to system collapse nationwide.

“We will provide an update shortly. Thank you for bearing with us,” it said on Twitter

Crime / 16 Boko Haram Terrorists Surrender To Nigerian Army After Being Outgunned (pix) by zainam: 7:42am On Nov 09, 2019
The Nigerian Army has announced the arrest of 16 members of a faction of Boko Haram, the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Nigerian Army Operations Media Coordinator Col. Aminu IIliyas said in a statement released on Friday November 8, that the suspects surrrendered after being outgunned. The operation which led to the death of several members of the terrorist group, also led to the arrest of several Boko Haram Logistics Suppliers and informants.

“On Nov.1, 16 insurgents along with 8 of their spouses who could no longer bear the heat from the onslaught against them surrendered to the relentless troops of Sector 1, Multinational Joint Task Force at Fotokol" the statement read.

“Subsequently, the surrendered insurgents were later handed over to troops of 3 Battalion (Main) at Gamboru Ngala, a border town North East of Borno.

“During preliminary interrogation and profiling, they confessed to have actively participated in attacks conducted against both military and civilian targets at various times.

“It was further revealed that 14 of them all belonged to ISWAP led by Al – Barnawi while two others, Hassan Kawu and Babagana Bukar Adijabe belonged to Boko Haram (Abubakar Shekau Faction).

”The 14 are; Ibrahim Bunu, Abba Sale, Baba Lamba Alhaji, Bukar Isa, Bukar Ali, Rawa Abba Gana, Mustapha Abatcha, Umar Abubakar, Hassan Bukar, Malam Abatcha Ali, Abba Umar Abatcha, Hussaini Babagana, Idris Mohammed and Umar Abba Bayoma.

“The repentant insurgents however, regretted their participation in the heinous crimes they committed against humanity and are now calling on their former colleagues to retrace their steps and also surrender to troops before it is too late,” he said.

"Troops deployed at Gajigana in Magumeri local government area intercepted some Boko Haram terrorists in the early hours of Nov. 5.

"The vigilant troops blocked and neutralised three of the Boko Haram criminals while several others escaped with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.

“Unfortunately, one soldier paid the supreme price while 2 others were wounded in action.

“The wounded soldiers are currently responding to treatment in a military medical facility.

“Additionally, the troops captured two AK47 Rifles, one Rocket Propelled Gun 7 (RPG 7), 5 AK 47 magazines, 47 Rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition and some quantities of hard drugs.

“In a related incident, another Boko Haram criminal met his waterloo on Nov. 4 while attempting to cross into the Sambisa Forest at Bama-Banki Road Junction when troops sighted and neutralized him.

“Similarly, troops of 195 Battalion, while on clearance patrol along Gubio Road on Nov. 4, recovered a kit bag containing 480 Rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition suspected to have been abandoned by escaping terrorists,” he said.

He further revealed that one insurgent Gun Truck was destroyed, four AK47 Rifles and a cache of ammunition were recovered.

In Yobe state, troops of Sector 2 deployed to Damaturu stopped a Boko Haram infiltration. The operation was successful due to the combined effort between the ground troops, artillery bombardment and precision air strikes by the Air Task Force of Operation LAFIYA DOLE.

“The encounter led to the decimation of a number of the insurgents in addition to the destruction of one Boko Haram Gun Truck.

“Unfortunately, one officer paid the supreme price during the encounter.

“Furthermore, during their exploitation, troops discovered and safely detonated two unexploded ordnance materials planted by the insurgents,” Illiyas added.
