Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by Obiagu1(m): 3:41pm On Dec 02, 2010 |
@ ezeagu, instead of translating what you don't know, leave it for others to do it. Most of the translations you gave above are wrong! For those that are seeking the meaning of some names, most of the names have been translated earlier. Just take your time and go thru the previous pages. 1 Like |

Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by ezeagu(m): 6:53pm On Dec 02, 2010 |
Obiagu1: Which ones are wrong? Obiagu1: Chi debelu, God wrote it or God wrote my destiny. 'God kept' is Chiedozie. |
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by Obiagu1(m): 9:37pm On Dec 02, 2010 |
ezeagu: You really don't know Igbo, I swear. Chidelu = God wrote (my destiny); (O delu ihe na akwa m = He/She wrote something on my cloth) Chidebelu = God kept/preserved (O debelu akwukwo ya na-enu oche = He/She kept his book on the chair) Chidebelum/Chidebelumndu = God kept me/God kept me alive. Chiedozie = God has made (something) right. |
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by ezeagu(m): 10:44pm On Dec 02, 2010 |
Obiagu1: There's no one named Chidelumndu. If there is, please link me to the person. Are you saying 'Debelu' is to keep? If you know Igbo well (or even any language) you'd know that there are several ways of saying the same thing. The only definition for Chidebelu on line is here: http://women.evenhealth.com/cgi-bin/showname.cgi?q=Chidebelu. Their other Igbo translations are accurate. Chi e dozie = Can be 'God has made it right' and it can be 'God and kept something'. If it is Chidoziri (an actual name people use) then it is only the first definition. There is a reason that there is the Igbo name 'Chiemezie'. You haven't told me which translations are wrong in the post before the last one. |
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by Obiagu1(m): 10:51pm On Dec 02, 2010 |
There's no need, you'll still argue it. Start from page 1 to 16, then you'll know the ones that are wrong. I'll only say, debe = keep, dee = write |
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by ezeagu(m): 11:03pm On Dec 02, 2010 |
Obiagu1: Why don't you just translate them yourself? Obiagu1: You're using the wrong accents. |
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by Obiagu1(m): 11:44pm On Dec 02, 2010 |
ezeagu: I just gave a few and you doubt it. I'll teach you Igbo when you're ready. Again, Chiedozie cannot be God kept something. The suffix "zie" means to make right. Chidozie = God make (something) right or God right a wrong Chimezie = God make (something) right or God right a wrong Chiedozie = God has made (something) right. Chiemezie = God has made (something) right. etc "Zie" or "Zi" as an affix means to show (in names) or to bring something down Ziem = show me zim = show me Ziemuzo= show me way Zimuzo = show me way Zie m/Zi m ibu m bu n'isi = bring down the load I have on my head |
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by ChinenyeN(m): 1:22am On Dec 03, 2010 |
Obiagu1, Chiedozie means "God has kept [well] or preserved (whatever the full version of the name is)". It is not "God has made right". That is "Chiemezie". dozie - keep [well]/preserve mezie - fix/correct/make right |
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by ezeagu(m): 10:51am On Dec 03, 2010 |
Obiagu1: Chiedozie is Chi e dozie (god has kept, arranged, etc). What you're saying is that Chiedozie is Chi e do zie, what on earth does Chi e 'do' zie mean? Anyway, another Igbo speaker has commented, go and call other Igbo speakers so we can see who should be teaching who. |

Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by Obiagu1(m): 9:42pm On Dec 03, 2010 |
ezeagu: Stop using the site as a source. I can put my own meaning on that same site, you know that. If you didn't grow up in Igboland, listen to others and stop arguing and confusing other people. ChinenyeN: Ndi Igbo aputachaa. Gi na Igbo a na-nua. |
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by ChinenyeN(m): 9:51pm On Dec 03, 2010 |
Obiagu1:Translation please. |
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by Obiagu1(m): 9:59pm On Dec 03, 2010 |
^^^ It's just a common expression (in central Igbo) Gi na Igbo a na-nua You are struggling with the Igbo language. (though it lacks that feel the Igbo one gives) |
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by ChinenyeN(m): 10:02pm On Dec 03, 2010 |
Oh okay. So how am I struggling with Igbo? |
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by Obiagu1(m): 10:06pm On Dec 03, 2010 |
Ask Ifyalways or Hotstepper (because I know you won't agree with me) to help you with name translation because you are struggling. |
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by ChinenyeN(m): 10:15pm On Dec 03, 2010 |
So wait, you mean to tell me that I'm "struggling with Igbo language" because of one name translation you and I don't agree on? |
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by Obiagu1(m): 10:27pm On Dec 03, 2010 |
You can only be an expert in Ngwa but when it comes to central Igbo, listen to others because sometimes it is irritating. Chidozie is my cousins name and a very common name for that matter, I grew up in Enugu, I know central Igbo very well, studied Igbo in school. The only dialect that I find hard is Ikwerre because one can barely find them in Enugu so the way they express certain things is not familiar with many except for southern Igbos. Enugu is the melting pot of all Igbo clans. Anyway, peace. |
Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings by ChinenyeN(m): 10:30pm On Dec 03, 2010 |
I'm not sure I said anything about central Igbo, this entire discussion. . and I have no idea why you're going off on a tangent with Ikwere & Enugu, but okay, I guess. . My point is just rather simple though, "dozie" is "keep [well]/preserve", unless you're implying that it means something else in 'central Igbo'. In that case then, no argument from me. If "dozie" means "make right" in central, then okay, but when I see someone named "Chidozie" or "Chiedozie", my interpretation is "Keep/Preserve", because that's just what I know, and that's what I'll say. I had no idea about the 'central' meaning (because I don't know central). So, my apologies on that, but you're entirely in the wrong to say that I'm "struggling with Igbo language" simply because of one name translation you and I disagree[d] on. |
