blackweaver: @Blackweaver, Thanks for the reply. I did try what u suggested:ejecting the cdrom/dvdrom using the eject /dev/sr0 command, it still didn't work. I don't think the device is being recognised as a cdrom, if it was it shld come up on the places list with the rest of the devices/drives. the lucky one time it worked it came up there as a cdrom drive. any more ideas. Thanks. |

Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 11:53am On Sep 07, 2009 |
ok in windows go to device properties (start -> run -> type devmgmt.msc) select the properties for the sound device (ps NOT the one that says codecs) select properties , click on the details tab and paste the value shown should be something like: HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0862&SUBSYS_1462725A&REV_1000\4&1952BAB1&0&0301 |

Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbe(m): 3:56pm On Sep 07, 2009 |
Yes now. But unless i install it back on d desktop no way. 4 d lapie, i will see when i get home. Then i saw some stuff on ubuntu forums abt dt onboard card in d desktop. Modprobe. But it was 4 hoary and one other distro. Is it safe to try it on jaunty? |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 4:42pm On Sep 07, 2009 |
modprobe is how you load drivers; the only problem is that you have to know which driver you want to load which is why i asked about lspci and the config id in windows |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbe(m): 7:57pm On Sep 07, 2009 |
OKAY! Dis has been a big learning curve. I solved d prob 4 d desktop. Apparently d onboard sound card which is ess audiodrive is classified as older card so d kernel doesnt load it by default. So i had 2 do a modprobe.d/ create a new entry in d module ( im guessing at proper terms here) had 2 create a new file along d line, then gedit d module 2 include d card in d startup drivers n voila. Sound. Am presently frustrating every1 @ home with my boonbox loud! If i get online l8r (mtn na wah o) i will post d procedure n lines used. D laptop 4 l8r. Right now am tired n hungry. Viva ubuntu! Neva thot i culd look stupid in front of a pc. |

Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbe(m): 2:34pm On Sep 08, 2009 |
and i guess someone can help me with the logic of this. i have a networking app (yf) that works fine. now its supposed to start a vpn client. when the app connects it does fine, when it tries to start the vpn it starts then fails giving an error code. from what i have deduced, that vpn needs to be run as root, similar to the case in vista where it has to be run as administrator. wherein lies my question, how can i achieve the feat of making the vpn run as root knwing that its not me that starts it but the app. gurus,, over to una o! |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 9:46pm On Sep 08, 2009 |
what happens if you run the app with the sudo command? |

Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 9:35am On Sep 09, 2009 |
jediknight; you know how to insert and remove modules don't you? anyway try "sudo rmmod usbserial" then "sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x05c6 product=0x6000" then "sudo modprobe option" then try "dmesg | grep tty" you should get a message like ttyUSB0 , and that means your modem has been detected if not pls paste the output of "dmesg | tail" again |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 9:46am On Sep 09, 2009 |
@4llerbe unfortunately i don't use gui when i use wvdial, i just run it from command line "sudo wvdial" but of course you have to have configured it first; if you like i can show you - if you don't think it'll be too complicated |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbe(m): 12:15pm On Sep 09, 2009 |

Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 2:27pm On Sep 09, 2009 |
@jedi my mistake it should have been "sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x05c6 product=0x1000" so try the process again: "sudo rmmod usbserial" sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x05c6 product=0x1000" sudo modprobe option" "dmesg | grep tty" give me outputs of: "dmesg | tail" and "tail /var/log/messages" you ARE using ubuntu9 aren't you? |

Re: Ubuntu Linux by Ralvy(m): 12:16am On Sep 10, 2009 |
Lerbe: As regards slow downloads. You may open System -> Administration -> Software Sources Download From: From the drop down, select other and choose "Select Best Server", a series of tests would be conducted (basically it would ping several servers) and output one with the best reply, you should select that one and reload the terminal and run: Sudo apt-get update As for the terminal, usually a CTRL + C like the windows cmd prompt should cancel any running process? |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by jediknight(m): 10:36pm On Sep 12, 2009 |
blackweaver: @Blackweaver, Thanks once again.Yes i'm running Ubuntu 9 (jaunty) Below are the results. I don't think it working yet, it hasn't come upon the network manager. i tired the wvdial thingy too, it didn't work or maybe i didn't configure that well.

Re: Ubuntu Linux by blackweaver(m): 11:19pm On Sep 12, 2009 |
@jediknight from your messages i see that your device has been detected (generic converter now attached to ttyUSB0) maybe i can help you with your wvdial config; what network are you on? if it's starcomms then we don't have a problem (since i use starcomms myself i can tell you what exactly to do) if not you will have to give me some information while using the modem in windows; (i take it your modem is working in windows right?) anyway from windows while you are connected go to the command prompt and type ipconfig /all and paste the output (the part that has the ppp connection) also i will need to know the phone number or better still if you think you can handle it yourself this is what you have to do: type sudo wvdialconfig in your terminal window , to be continued |
