Is this about the deportee?

Who told you that there are not very many airlines who would jump at the chance to fly the lucrative London-Lagos route?

The fact that you are unable to do something as a result of prevailing circumstances should not prevent you from taking action about the same thing when the situation is right.

Why dont you go and have yourself shackled? Afterall black people never complained about it, so why should we complain about it now?

A deportee committed a crime and should be treated as such. Instead of leaving quietly they cause mayhem and disturb other passengers. See the brouhaha he caused. I just don't know why Nigerians can talk outside but when they witness police beating up people everyday on the streets of Nigeria. Everyone turns a blind eye.

Now if the route is so lucrative, How come so many airlines don't bother. Or you think the 10 or so airlines that fly into Nigeria is all there is?

Black people complained about slavery and fought against racism. Nigerians should fight against police brutality against innocent people in Lagos before talking about brutality against a deportee who refuses to leave quietly and peacefully.

EXACTLY! Why Nigerians cannot see this for the hypocrisy it is confounds me.
When women were being stripped naked in Aba for daring to wear trousers some months back, why was there no petition in NigeriaVillageSquare?

When the convoy of a state governor beat a woman in front of her kids, where was the furore?

some1 sent me this:

Hi,

If you love Nigeria then you will act.

"When they came for the communists, I was silent, because I was not a communist;
When they came for the socialists, I was silent, because I was not a socialist;
When they came for the trade unionists, I did not protest, because I was not a trade unionist;
When they came for the Jews, I did not protest, because I was not a Jew;
When they came for me, there was no one left to protest on my behalf."

We members of the Respect Nigeria Coalition (RNC) have resolved to officially commence the worldwide boycott of British Airways goods and services as from Thursday, 15 May, 2008. We are calling on every Nigerian and friends of Nigeria, every person who loves justice and fairness and every person who has a social conscience to vote against British Airways with the power of their purse.

PRESS STATEMENT BY RESPECT NIGERIANS COALITION (RNC) ON THE EXPIRATION OF ULTIMATUM GIVEN TO BRITISH AIRWAYS

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Press, we are issuing this Statement on behalf of Respect Nigerians Coalition (RNC), a coalition of organizations and persons championing the campaign against British Airways' discriminatory and indecorous treatment of its Nigerian customers. You all know that on Thursday, 27 March 2008, British Airways officials and the police subjected Mr Ayodeji Omotade to degrading treatment and went further to eject the other 135 passengers (overwhelmingly Nigerians) from BA075 flight bound for Lagos Nigeria from London Heathrow Airport. Of course, we are acutely aware that without your unstinting support, this story would have been swept under the carpet. That is why today, we are once again calling on you to help deepen international consciousness about the campaign.

On Tuesday, April 15 2008, we made five specific demands on British Airways over this issue and asked that they address these before Wednesday, April 30, 2008. We asked British Airways to:

tender a clear and well-worded apology to all passengers affected by their discriminatory and intimidatory conduct aboard flight BA075 on 27 March, 2008 in a Nigerian national newspaper;
tender a clear and well-worded written apology and appropriate compensation to Mr Ayodeji Omotade for financial and emotional losses suffered as a result of the conduct of British Airways and its agents on the day;
withdraw all adverse statements made to the police about Mr. Ayodeji Omotade over this incident;
lift the ban imposed on Mr Ayodeji Omotade, even as he would still retain his right to decide whether or not to fly British Airways in the future, and
issue an undertaking that British Airways shall improve its customer care culture and desist from such practices that give the impression that the airline is arrogant, uncaring and discriminatory.
So far, British Airways has failed to do any of the above or give any indication of its intention to do any of the above. The terrible statements its faceless officials have been making in the press over this issue, both in the United Kingdom and Nigeria, attest to the unwillingness of those who run the airline to see reason. In the face of British Airways' stonewalling, it is therefore our intention to now inform you of our next line of action.

We are calling on people to educate British Airways on the virtues of good corporate citizenship. Nigerians and friends of Nigeria all over the world will continue to sign the Petition/Protest Letter posted on our two websites – www.nigeriavillagesquare and www.respectnigerians.com as long as the protest continues.

We recognize the concern showed by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar'Adua and the Nigerian Federal Government over this issue. We are aware that discussions are ongoing between agents of the Federal Government and British Airways, the details of which are unknown to us at this time. But we are not waiting for the Federal Government to teach British Airways that the customer is king. They will find that out as they continue to test our resolve, because we are absolutely determined to prove that it's possible for people's power to trounce corporate tyranny.

Finally, you, members of the press, are the most important pillars of support we have throughout this struggle. It is you that put our issue on the front-burner of national and international discourse. Your reports have roused the consciousness of the British and international public and we know that the endless stream of messages of support we are receiving and the thousands of signatories supporting our protest have been largely due to the publicity and support you have given our campaign from the beginning.

Please, stand solidly with us, for the man dies in him who keeps silent in the face of tyranny of any sort.

Thank you for your support, care and attention.

Signed:

Kennedy Emetulu
Michael Egbejumi-David
Tosin Awotesu.

I have read through the thread and there is one bloke, Jakumo, dat has stood out. He has consistently told us to be timid and intimadated by the white, i wish Fela was alive to talk to him. Blokes like dat cheapen us as a people. He seems well travelled and the like, but the does not understand the NIGERIAN in us.

Does he know the problem we are facing now? We used to be one big community, everyone brings up a child but all dats changed. We can never walk pass a person being oppressed. Me, i am well travelled in the SOUTHERN PART OF NIGERIA, Jakumo should make sure dat his BRITISH COLONIALS leave ND cos issues like dis makes revolutionaries out of the ordinary.

Me thinks Newton Jibunoh's travel routes is the best - LAND.

Boycott BA from 15th May.

They regret the incidence, but no apologies, what Cheek!.

Get off your high horses already!!! No one is telling you to postrate to anyone. All we are saying is learn not to CRY WOLF all the time and actually think before you leap is all. No evidence of racism or maltreatment except that baggage was lost and the guy was carted away by the very POLICE whom he chose to confront directly in all this. Since when did BA become a human rights organization that it should start fighting against UK police when passengers decide to take on the law directly?? sheesh people!!! THINK!!!

i have being reading through this thread ad noting peoples comments and views.the only thing most people supporting the boycott fail to realise is he was sent off by the British Police and not a BA crew.his case should be directed to the British Police force and not BA.

firstly,he made a mistake of going to the officers directly.he would have kept his complaint to the Airline hostess and also make sure the pilot knows whats happening in his plane.at least i know he wont fly that plane with someone screaming down his plane.that aside;

Let play a different scene here, NY-London route with BA and all other plots still the same and the US air marshals come in and take him away from the plane, are you going to tell me he will make a case against BA on that?his case wont last 5minutes in court.Every Airline operates within the laws of the countries they land on.His grievance should be directed to the officers that took him out.

WHOSAI!!!!! DOG DEY BARK!!!!
we can hear you wink

Typical, instead of actually looking to solve this and build a better relationship with this flyer, you feel jumping from one to another is the best solution?? Well, way to fight the good fight for yourself and those around you. You should get the award then.
solve what? when you have choices? people switch service providers, insurance companies, phone and electricity providers why cant they change their flyer?

i'm still trying to understand why people who are not boycotting are so bothered?
people are choosing to vote with their little kobo kobo why are you bothered?
it is a matter of choice!! mr omotafe and the deportee are not begging anyone to boycott

Well, if the only thing you were actually doing was just signing your petition and going out there with your placard, I would not be bothered. But if you keep coming back in here with your pity party to claim you are right and everyone who is not on the same side as you are you is evil and Anti-Nigeria, then I ask that you at least be sure to allow those who do not hold to the same, be allowed to post responses to counter your claim. The Law has to be upheld in all cases, regardless of who is involved or color of skin. The man confronted police. Instead of jumping blindly with the same Nigerians style Jaguda justice we see all over Nigeria to this day, learn how things work in the civilized world and try to deal with things the civilized way, is that too much to ask??
Re: British Airways Regrets Maltreatment Of Nigerians by DisGuy: 5:38am On May 15, 2008
and i guess you know exactly what happened on that flight
you also ignored the fact that many people had experience of bad customer service!

how do you get people to sign a petition without spreading the word! if you don't want to read it please move on to the next one! you are the one bothering yourself!
nobody is asking for your oyinbo ass kissing sympathy! the guy himself didn't even mention the racism you keep bleeping about
I wonder how you uphold the law of the last person that died after being tortured on the flight from Spain
the people protesting the Olympic touch on the street of Europe how many of them were detained in prison
and charged with terrorism or is that really a civilised way to protest?
Re: British Airways Regrets Maltreatment Of Nigerians by Kobojunkie: 5:45am On May 15, 2008
I do not have to be on the plane to know that omotade's own confession damns him. The man tells you plain as day that he confronted the police on BA plane. Why then do you think BA should pay for his own actions?? Ever heard of facing the consequences of your action?? That is usually how people try to ensure it works outside of the Nigerian shores.

Hey, I am not bothered. Just as you like to spread your propaganda, allow us post our views as well. Or does it offend you that we do not want to sign your petitions but would rather you  read the words of the man to help you understand why we see your petition is directed at the wrong party in this case??

This is a public forum not a private petition bay. You post in here, expect folks who are here to debate ideas and issues to do so freely as well. Here is my problem. You claim I am oyinbo ass kissing but in that very statement show yourself to be the very one with Oyinbo issues that you have allowed to fester and turn your rants even more bitter. We are asking you to learn what it means to live in a world where there are laws and learn to use those laws to your advantage, not go around claiming everyone is maltreating you, while not resolved to deal with your insecurities.

Only foolish people go around making decisions based on feelings alone. All we ask is that you read Omotade's own words and then understand how what he did is not really in accordance with the law of the land, which, by the way is not same as those we have in Nigeria. These laws are actually effective and expect to be brought to book when you break any one of them. Omotade confronted on the Job COPS. Why again, is this against BA? Not a single one of you has been able to answer this question but you go on and on spouting Bitter Racist hate against whites and think that somehow means you are a victim?? NO, it only shows you are another ignorant Nigerian and that actually hurts the image of Nigerians even more than anything else.

I am saddened that Nigeria, a country whose citizens are such ardent believers in African juju magic, could be embroiled in a dispute over a disturbance on board a white-man's low-tech air-plane, while failing to LOOK INWARD and patronise African Juju consultants who have known for centuries how to transport passengers to any point on the globe simply with a few incantations and dried animal parts.

Arise, Nigerians, and boycott ALL airlines, for the time has come for you to use African MEANS to get where you need to go. Those white devils will come begging on their hands and knees to learn the rudiments of African teleportation technology, once they behold that glorious aerial armada of magic carpets departing and arriving at Lagos Airport.

WORD

@Kobojunkie

They can't confront MOPOL but they have the nerve to confront Met Police on a Plane with all the global security issues. Who told them that if a policeman is arresting a felllow or making sure a deportee (ILLEGAL immigrant) leaves a country, they can intervene and decide how the matter should be handled.

@Tex

Nigerians don't question authority in their house. '. . . don't talk to your elders when they are speaking to you becuase they are always right but insult your neighbour ( your father's 2nd wife or your mums rival in the market). . . '. So they can complain about BA but congratulate IBB for a job well done and even have the nerve to plead for him to come and rule again. It is sickening.
Re: British Airways Regrets Maltreatment Of Nigerians by jaguda(m): 1:45pm On May 15, 2008
@ jakumo, wats wrong with ur senses, @ kobojunkie, the two of u make us sick. Are we talking about IBB or OBJ here, NO. Are u guys saying wat Ba did was rite? i also read sum other person saying it was the British Police and not BA dat was responsible for the incidence, i beg to disagree, u r digressing. Didn't BA just regret the incidence, even BA is accepting responsibility but see our "Abroad" brothers selling us out.

Don't u saboteurs ever complain about NIGERIA AGAIN, cos u have lost the rite to be called NIGERIANS!

There are certain things dat can't be changed about us and dat includes being our brothers' keepers.
Re: British Airways Regrets Maltreatment Of Nigerians by OMDBaby(f): 3:48pm On May 15, 2008
BA is only apologising for removing the 135 or so passengers and not omotade.BA didn't arrest him nor did the pilot ask for his arrest.he knows better thats why we haven't heard anything from him again only copying and pasting the only one incident.
i am not against anything,he is free to sue if he feel his rights were violated but he should address is properly and not be creating false scenes.

N/B,A pilot has the right to off load rowdy and noisy passengers at anytime.have you not heard of incidences when flights are diverted to send off unruling passengers and who get subsequently arrested.

BA didn't arrest Omotade
BA didnt restrain or shackle the deportee.

BA acted well within their rights to jettison the unruly passengers. All airlines should value the safety and security of their passengers, and a plane full or angry, fist waving and finger pointing passengers is a safety hazard.

All these guys coming here to blab are too used to the molue-like system utilized by Nigerian aircraft operators, hence their fury when someone actually does the right thing.

If you really want to be patriotic, pay taxes, pay Nepa bills. In tervene when next you see MOPOL beating up innocent okada riders

Nigerians are too quick to take sides when it comes to issues like this

The ones that don't know the rudiments of the story are the ones that make the most noise

Everyone roar like wounded lions in the name of patriotism

I do not condone maltreatment of Nigerians anywhere, but unruly passengers should be chucked off if it infringes on safety and discomfort

Innocent people get battered all over Nigeria by red-eyed foolish policemen but no one dares challenge them in the name of patriotism!

Nigeria is shameless if it has to resort to depending on International carriers to bring back itz citizen to-and-fro all over the world

Just because we know HUMAN RIGHTS EXIST in other countries apart from Nigeria doesnt mean we can stand up and throw tantrums anywhere

Any airline has the frigging rights to launch any-one out of the flight even if they are draped in a GREEN-WHITE-GREEN FLAG if they don't behave themselves

Hell no! shocked

Delta Airways!!!! I stopped flying BA like 5 years ago. For one I can't stand that their accent. Even when I go to the UK, it is Delta all the way. I love my American brothers and sisters and must patronize them at all cost. Abi you no know say Delta dey fly non-stop to Lagos in less than 13 hours from ATL with berra jollof rice and stewed nama or chicken? cheesy

Jokes aside, I love the fact that BA kicked all those stupid Nigerians off the flight.  Nothing personal, this is business.  I do not support insubordination or mob mentality in any way, shape or form. BA deserves a medal for what they did. I am sure next time a deportee starts his or her usual antics to bait stupid, busy body Nigerians aboard foreign aircrafts, they will think 2-5 times before the open their dirty mouths to talk rubbish.

I am also gladdened by the fact that no BA official has even looked in Nigeria's direction to discuss the rubbish incident.

Let this be a lesson to the unrepentant, irredeemable Nigerian disciples of indiscipline. A very good lesson I say.  Let them go and practice that rubbish with their cattle rearing police force in Nigeria and see what will happen to their stinking arses!
