Unlike the South African army that fled without turning back, the Nigerian army reversed whatever gains made in a 6 weeks blitzkrieg. The African lightning war. cool

Then they begged South Africa not to return giving mining contracts and protection. Seleka is currently protecting mines owned by South Africans

Egypt displays South African EW system

The Egyptian Armed Forces displayed a new mobile electronic warfare (EW) system for the first time during a parade marking the October 1973 war with Israel.

The system was labelled as the GSY2210 and the announcer for the television coverage of the parade said it was a radio communications reconnaissance and jamming system that had been made in South Africa and entered Egyptian service in 2011.

While the GSY2210 has never been heard of before, the GSY 1450, GSY 1501 and GSY 1800 systems were made by the South African company Grintek Ewation, which is now GEW Technologies

source: janes

Reading this just reminded me that the mobile EW/COMINT system has not only been installed in CASSPIRS, but also in the Oryx operated by 17 Squadron SAAF.

PIC 1: the latest version after the Project Deer upgrade;
PIC 2 & 3: Pre-upgrade;
PIC 4: the pre-ugrade EW console.

Theoretically you can land that Oryx on top of a hostile SAM.

depending on what SAM or hostile air space , maybe against manpads, but i dont think a transport helicopter (big radar cross section, slow ) have any chance against a modern air defense systems ( short, medium, long combined network system) , an old shilka or Tunguska , Pantsir for exemple with it's autocannon can hit him easily from short range .

You missed the part where that helicopter is a dedicated EW platform, ie it jams hostile radars and forms of communications (theoretically as I said).

Think of it as the EA-18G Growler.

Some bad news out of the DRC:

2 Hinds belonging to FARDC crashed around midday on Friday in bad weather. 2 Rooivalk were sent out to locate the choppers. Both helicopters came to rest on the slopes of Mount Mikeno, about 500m apart. Five personnel (2 Congolese and 3 Russians crew members) in total were rescued from the Mi-24 crash sites. The rescue operation took place at around 15:00UTC. 2 Rooivalk provided overwatch, 1 Oryx hoisted the crew with another in support. Three of the occupants of the FARDC Mi-24s were wounded and airlifted to Goma.

The 2 Hinds were part of 4 that were refurbished in Ukraine in 2012.

More bad news:
It now appears that a rebel group, suspected to be M23 remnants who absconded from a camp in Uganda, got to one of the downed Hinds before the Rooivalks and captured 4 crew members still alive. And all along the Ugandan military has been denying that these arseholes escaped. They refused to hand them over and now say they can't find Makenga and about 150 of his men.

Don't know about now, but when I was there FARDC Hind crews were not armed, unlike our Rooivalk crews. There was some talk of having them come over here for the SAAF SERE course, but I don't know where that got to.

Not an area they operate in. Villagers in the area had reported armed men coming from the direction of the Ugandan border.

If maybe they had received such training, they could have resisted the capture until the Rooivalks arrived.

I think FARDC is too negligent.

A vehicle like this for the army would also be fantastic. When you need something for quick deployment. A C-130 would be able to carry 3 units.

Add a gunshield and we are good to go.

For now, only the police. It's in widespread use with the police. I've spotted older version in Sambisa with the Police.
