ILIDEFI: Many Yoruba graduates are terrible in English (both in their accents and d use of verbs), despite being taught in schools with English language. Can somebody now imagine how it would b in a couple of years time if dis new plan is implemented?
Let's face facts, dis move is anti-Nigerian. How would a child from another region whose parents come to settle down in d southwest for wateva reason, b expected to cope wen enrolled in primary schools in d southwest, in d event of implementation of dis plan? Are we saying dat ppl must b restricted to their regions? Yorubas, think for Nigeria, for once.

Biafra in sight for you. The yorubas are getting prepared just in case...... The Igbos should start printing their currency.

Not knowing how to speak English is not the start and end of everything. South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore don't speak English and they teach in their local languages, but see where they are today.
.

I cannot believe that you suggested Lagos' exclusion from this policy!

Just because we had the capital of the country thrusted upon us does not mean we are now less Yoruba!

Any DAWN idea must be spearheaded by Eko as a matter of fact!

They are hard learners, they don't lean easy. What time do you have left after spending your entire life worrying about Yoruba people?

You just have to pity them..

Then the typical Yoruba enclaves like Ibadan, Ogbomoso etc are doomed as it relates English language fluency.
They're having it so bad already as it is
Honest advice: They should know when to draw the line before the proper 'murdering' of our lingua franca please

I hate it when people make fallacious statement just to show their disdain for others, you called Ibadan and Ogbomoso enclaves? You're very daft for using that statement. If you think we're having it bad with English language how does that affect your miserable life? Why drink panadol for our headache?

With this 'development', I expect that Common Entrance Exams will be set in Yoruba language. Since this 'language of instruction' is 2 be at the elementary/primary school level, how do they acclimatise in Secondary School and beyond?
Since English is our lingua franca, indigenous languages should be taught at home! No need 4 all dis drama!

There's nothing anti Nigerian about this plan, our language has suffered enough from English language's domination. No one is stopping other regions from following suit, many kids come to UK without being able to speak a word of English yet they cope so the reasons you gave hold no water.

I hear you. Awesome, Lovely concept, etc. Tomorrow they will want to migrate to English speaking countries for greener pastures. Then they will use IELTS to deal with you. Nonsense. We do not need to be instructed in our local languages. We are 150 million and our language is not and will not be threatened. When it comes to Education, all we need is just a conducive environment,(classroom) where our kids will study. We need our teachers to be well motivated so that they can value their job and teach with passion.Let the Governors use our money to develop our place, give us good roads, water and electricity and we will stay in Yoruba land and speak all the Yoruba they want. angry

I don;t support this move. Now I'm an advocate of developing a local Nigerian language as lingua franca and using this language as a tool for teaching in schools but for South West states to adopt yoruba will further polarise the nation. First you are saying a teacher who can't speak the language will not be able to teach in any of the schools in the southwest. Maybe the eastern guys will say ok, let's adopt Igbo language and the northern guys will say let's adopt Hausa. At the end we will have separate states which makes no sense to me.

Way forward is to develop a local language. My suggestion is our own formalised version of Pigin English - Why not? Why do we have the Soyinkas, Chimandas, etc if we cannot develop a local language over the next 4-5 years?

There is Nigeria and there is Yorubaland. There is 'we' and there is 'we-we'. Nigeria being a federal state gives us (Yorubas) certain powers to make certain policies and these policies are in line with the constitution so in this case, your opinion with regard to how Yorubas wish to govern its domain is moot. Nigeria gives you the right to reside wherever you wish in Nigeria but does not give you the right to violate the laws of your host state. If you are not happy with the manner in which we have chosen to live in our region, pack your ibo must go and get out! Simples!

You are beginning to see the bigger picture'

Nigeria is a big farce and no matter how we choose to patch it up, the fact that we are fundamentally different is undeniable!

The UK being a state consisting four nations still stands because they can at least understand one another when the speak. Nigeria is so false that if we must communicate with each other, we would have to speak in a colonial language! My grandmother can not speak English yet you say she is same as an ibo by virtue of being forced to be a Nigerian.

I have absolutely nothing in common with an ibo or Hausa and the earlier we start facing that fact, the better for each nation.

Kai! These Yorubas are too smart. And I totally agree with the idea. With the way F.G keeps splitting the country into pieces, is a matter of time before every tribe lose its identity.

This is already happening where Delta, Rivers Igbo man will say I'm a Niger-delta man, I'm not from the South-east, I'm from South-south. A Yoruba man from Ilorin in Kwara or Offa in Kogi etc will say, we're part of Arewa, some will say, we are part of South-west cos we are Yorubas. And if there children then ask the reason why they are part of the North, story will start. Too much confusion in this country. And this is not helping the kids.

May God help us.

This would be a practical attempt to divide the country . It may improve the sense of unity amongst the people of the south west and the opposite with other ethnic groups, there by taking us back to the times before 1914 .

Our leaders think they are rational , but the are not.
they make no attempt to unite the country!
Many people ave found love and friendship with people of other ethnic groups , but our leaders take it for granted .

These actions even if they are carried out will come with some unfortunate consequences

Our graduates from the southwest will be poorer in English language
The students may as a resul fell inferior
Hence the private schools in the region will make more money ,

I pray that our leaders would find ways to truly unite this nation !
A united Nigeria would be more powerful than a single regional entity !
