To me no course is a waste. Just that in Nigeria, alot of us go to school to show off or to intimidate others, that is why some people are still yet to go university because they are not offered courses like; law, medicine, engineering etc.They see other courses as a waste. Like they say, don't hate the player but the game. This is the one of the reasons why a Bsc holder would think is better than a Hnd holder.That is how our leaders want it to be.

GEOLOGY??..No wonder,anyway most of u guys in NL are students,fresh graduates&NYSC(corpers) with no real-life (out-of-school)experience that's why you can talk anyhow! Let me let u know that BSc Building. A professional Builder is someone who is trained academically&knows d techniques to construct building,not just laying blocks...he is quite different from an Architect that's why most Universities have it as a PROFESSIONAL course-5yrs.with a professional body NIOB..Architects only designs. I won't waste my time in lecturing u 'cos u not ready to learn,I've been going thru 'ur posts. Goodluck with ur geology.

It is nt abt d course u study at times, it is abt urself! I guess sumbdy will also talk abt yoruba as a course, bt remember Dele mohamadu. I av heard sombdy wu studied pharmacy n later medicine and never practise any1 of these. I av heard of sumbdy wt certificate in NCE n he's nw working wt mtn. Another person graduated wt 3rd klass or was it pass in URP yet currently in oil company. So wat are u talking abt. Had it been GEJ was a doctor, he might nt av tout of going into politics. My younger sister had A1's in agric and economics and B3's in all other subjects for her WAEC. instead of her joining the flock to apply for med and surgery, i adviced her to study agric econs in a federal uni in the east which she did and graduated with a high 2:1. she was lucky to serve in Ibadan and then posted to NISER where she did research for her NYSC (no one influenced this). After service, she got an EU scholarship to do a double mastERS degree in agric bioengineering, environmental policy and development economics...she is in europe and from all indications she aint coming back as there are so many ph.d studentships,scholarships and jobs for people who studied courses with agricultural content in their field and are passionate about it.
The most important thing is wherever/whatever u study, create a roadmap for urself and most IMPORTANTLY, think far....Dont let naija be the limit of ur thinking/horizon. There r scholarships/opportunities for every course in europe if u package urself properly

Its so unfortunate that in naija that due to the underdevelopment of so many industries and the man-know-man mentality people who sweat reading courses like human kinetics, polymer and textile engineering etc will end up in a bank or having to start business because the industries where they wouldav put whatever they garnered in school is virtually non existent.

Make i yearn more as i gat free time on my hands for now .Take for example a guy/chick who reads Food science, microbiology,animal science, soil science etc and finishes with a 2:1 and then goes on for his NYSC in kano. If u wanna package urself internationally for masters scholarship application, it starts from NYSC. Dont go joining groups for CDS like road safety etc which are 'useless' (u are allowed to use this word here only ) ; instead look out for UNICEF, HIV/AIDS, anti Women trafficking, MDG'S (renowned world bodies) and make sure u take it serious and follow it bumper to bumper and at the end of ur NYSC, have an official of one of these NGO's write a strong letter of recommendation for you saying u undertook voluntary work (u can sweeten it by saying u chose to give back to the society bla bla bla) and then with your 1 year experience/service in a college (instead of saying you taught biology, you can put 'a college lab scientist') -- This is packaging..... ... (Packaging is important,,its why most of us will pay to watch Thor in cinemas while we have our own Sango and amadioha rotting away with low patronage )
along with ur TOEFL which you should write while doing your NYSC as this is the best time to write it when u v time and FG money in ur hands, u r good to go to apply for the following below..they r all called erasmus mundus masters courses..there r so many more but this s what i could dig up

With expensive phnes most of y'all carry around, try and utilize it optimally by googling and doing research..a friend of mine who finished from UNIUYO was complaining about lack of opportunities in her course to study abroad..I told her that 'do u know that UNIUYO is the only university in naija that has an agreement with NTNU (Norwegian university of sciience and technology) which is the topmost university in Norway for free masters and scholarship admission in the whole of naija.Check the following link below . there is a quota specifically allocated just for students who graduated from UNIUYO

I also think there is laziness of some nigerian gradautes, i wonder why someone who read a course like international relations, linguistics, english language, mass communication etc would not take out time to study or pay for language courses in french,german etc. If i read any of the above courses apart from scholarships and all, i would be thinking of working for the United Nations, UNDP and all. (b4 u can work for any of these international NGO'S u must know a second language apart from english language)

I have seen jobless and wretched folks who studied all the courses listed below when those who studied "useless" courses are getting good jobs with good pay.
I read zoology and have visited several countries and continents (US and UK inclusive) on scholarship/sponsorship because i am a zoologist, whem many medical doctors and engineers don't even have an international passport let alone pass through Murtala Muhammed Airport. I currently practise what i studied and i smile to and from the bank every month. Most important to me is the joy and sense of fulfillment i derive from my chosen career and were i to choose a profession again, I would choose zoology.

These courses are mostly imposed on the students as a result of their not passing the cut off for their preferred course. IMO,any course apart from the ones below will most likely be among them.

Even though I disagree with haykins01 list of courses bla bla bla in his earlier post. I felt some sarcasm in your response at his course of study (Geology). Anything wrong with that Its one of the great courses out there with a good prospect, and mind you its very very tough to come out with gud grades.
I do agree with you all courses are unique and essential in their own way. I once told a brother-in-law that wanted to go into fish farming and thinks its just all about feeding the fishes. I asked what training do u have, he said "Not necessary, just feed your fish and u'll be fine". I replied, you think that guy/girl that spent his/her last 4yrs in uni studying Fishery was just continually been told by the lecturer day in day out "Feed your fishes"

Meanwhile Haykins, your course of study is just a platform not necessarily a guarantee. I studied Geology in uni, but today am a Drilling Engineer in the oil & gas sector. Needless to say, I never worked as a Geologist within these 9yrs experience in my oil & gas career.

The reason white men are better than we blacks is that they are outstanding in all dat they do. Some mentioned carpentry as if it is a crime to study that, forgetting that the cushion, kitchen cabinet wardrobe an what have you are simply achieved through that aspect of education . Mind you,that your in university to enhance your knowledge which is not just limited to academics but also to your communication and interaction (social) skills. So pls do your almighty course an allow another to benefit from his.
