Rohr wants to be involved in CHAN Qualifiers

Coach Rohr is expected back in Nigeria to help prepare the home-based players in their CHAN qualifiers against the winner of the match between Togo/Benin Republic on August 10 and 17.

Super Eagles’ Media Officer, Toyin Ibitoye told The Guardian yesterday that Rohr had promised to return soon after his spy-mission in Russia because he wants to be part of the home-based Eagles’ preparation for the CHAN qualifiers.

“The home-based Eagles will be handled by coach Salisu Yusuf, but Rohr is eager to be part of the preparation because he wants to use the opportunity to see the players,” Ibitoye said.

Joebie:
Very good analysis Sir TheSuperNerd.

Now the question.. who to start against Cameroon? Let's focus on the midfield.
The 4-2-3-1 formation gives room for two defensive midfielders if i'm not mistaking. But one of them would still be more dedicated to being a holding midfielder

Optioni 1: Mikel is a sure starter for his experience, and we expect him to rise up to this kind of opposition any day anytime. He has a lot of top games under his belt. Can't take that away from him. It is most certain he will get his AMF role although I prefer Mikel in the number 4 role, but with the absence of a creative midfielder, Mikel is the closest and the only option we have, until we allow Iwobi show us his stuff in that position. That takes us back to your question. Who gets the number 4 role? Onazi, Ndidi, Ogu? I think I will make a case for Esiti ONLY based on his recent exploits with Gent. The number 4 is one of, if not the most important position in a team. In fact it is the player that GUARANTEES control of the midfield. And i'm beginning to think this is why we lost to SA. We will need that holding midfielder, who may not necessarily play as such for most part of the match considering the physical Cameroon. But we will need that role every now and then, I think especially for the Cameroon tie Esiti looks well suited for it, and can hardly be destroyed force versus force. It is not for no reason he is nicknamed The Rock in Belgium. But can he rise up to that occasion?

In CMF, we know Onazi for his tackles which frustrates can frustrate any team. But he has to do more of short passes because his long passes are awful. Should Onazi play as a CMF then? How about Ndidi? This take us to another option.

Option 2: Should iwobi be given the chance, and should our forwards know just how to position themselves to take advantage of Iwobi's fast and splitting passes, I believe the lad will excel as he wouldn't have to come against the Cameroonians physically much.

Then we can have Mikel do what he did for Chelsea for about a decade. It is indeed very true that the player with the #4 shirt can sometimes go under-appreciated by fans because he is rarely the one who scores the crucial goal or makes the last ditch tackles. We can expect Mikel to be clever as well not to be out-muscled by the Cameroonians and create more cover for our center backs very well.

This option opens room for the question, who plays as the CMF? Clearly, Ndidi for his excellent vision and ball distribution.

in all this we are trying to take a more scientific approach in our arguments, instead of choosing a player over another just simply because we like them or we have seen them play well in other situations.

Then move etobo to the right or left wing forward.

Exclusive: Kalmar, Belgian Club In Talks Over Loan Deal For Liverpool's Nigerian Striker

According to information gathered by allnigeriasoccer.com , Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi is attracting huge interest from clubs in Sweden and Belgium in the summer transfer window.

It is all but confirmed that the Reds will have to loan out the Nigeria U23 international to a foreign club, for the simple reason that he is not qualified for a work permit in England based on the paltry fees the Premier League club paid to secure his signature from Imperial Soccer Academy in 2015.

Swedish Allsvenskan outfit Kalmar FF, who have an excellent relationship with Liverpool, are pushing to sign their former trainee on loan but face competition from an unnamed club in Belgium.

Awoniyi trained with Kalmar after his heroics at the 2013 Fifa U17 World Cup, and they were favourites for his signature until Liverpool snatched him from under their noses.

A partnership agreement was signed between Liverpool and Kalmar as part of the deal taking Awoniyi to the Anfield side, as the English club were impressed with the way they scouted Taiwo Awoniyi.

In the last two seasons, the 19-year-old striker has been loaned to FSV Frankfurt and NEC Nijmegen to get ready for the rigors of first team football.

Rohr Will Not Take Charge Of CHAN Eagles — NFF
By Richard Jideaka, Abuja

Completesportsnigeria.com has learnt from competent source at the Nigeria Football Federation that there is no plan to force Gernot Rohr to take charge of the home based Super Eagles for the Championship of African Nations (CHAN).

Media reports said NFF has directed Rohr to take charge of the home based Super Eagles from Salisu Yusuf ahead of their qualifier against Burkina Faso next month, but Glass House sources have denied the report.

"Salisu's appointment letter stated that he will be in charge of the CHAN Super Eagles. He will remain with the team as NFF has no plan to impose Rohr on the domestic Eagles," the source stated.

"Of course, Rohr will give advise but he will not be in charge of the home Eagles. We want to win CHAN after three attempts, so we are giving the team all our support to ensure that we achieve the desired result."

NFF : Uyo Remains Super Eagles Home, Not Moving To Port Harcourt
By Richard Jideaka, Abuja

There is no decision yet on moving Super Eagles home games from Godswill Akpabio International stadium, Uyo to Port Harcourt, General Secretary of Nigeria Football Federation, Dr. Sanusi Mohammed has said, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Reacting to reports in the media that the federation has moved the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Cameroon to Port Harcourt after the 2019 AFCON qualifier loss to South Africa, Dr. Sanusi said he was not aware of such decision.

"We have not changed venue of Super Eagles matches from Uyo to any other venue. I read the reports, but I can tell you that the NFF did not take such decision. For now, Uyo remains home for the Eagles," Sanusi stated.

"If we decide to change venue for Eagles home games, it will be communicated to the media, CAF and FIFA. For all I know, we have not changed venue. Uyo has been good to us and we cannot because we lost to South Africa run away from there."

He assured that the Super Eagles would bounce back from the home defeat to South Africa and go ahead to qualify for the 2019 AFCON, adding that it was a good experience for coach Gernot Rohr ahead of the very important clash with Cameroon.

The NFF scribe also revealed that Rohr will be monitoring the Confederations cup going on in Russia with emphasis on African champions Cameroon ahead of the August world cup qualifiers.

Exclusive: Lyon Desperate To Sign Nigerian Fabregas After Bossing Midfield Vs Onazi, Lukman

Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that French Ligue 1 outfit Olympique Lyonnais are working on a deal to sign Nigerian wonderkid Solomon Ebuka Ogueri, dubbed the Nigerian Cesc Fabregas.

The central midfielder was scouted by representatives of Lyon on Wednesday, June 14th as Westerlo Academy thrashed Super Eagles All Stars 5-1 at the Lagos State Rehabilitation and Vocational Training Centre.

Solomon bossed the midfield playing against Super Eagles stars Eddy Onazi, Lukman Haruna and Raheem Lawal, and was named the Most Valuable Player of the game after scoring two goals.

Lyon have firmed up their interest in the 17-year-old by inviting him for trials from July 3rd to August 9th, where he will be further assessed before he is offered a deal.

That said, Metz are understood to be in pole position for the signature of Solomon Ebuka Ogueri and he is expected to travel to France in the coming days to begin training with the academy without him undergoing trials.

He is represented by the same agency that handles the affairs of Cameroon legend Samuel Eto'o.

Swansea City are on the brink of announcing the signing of England U21 international of Nigerian parentage Tammy Abraham.

The BBC writes on its electronic edition that the Swans have reached an agreement with Chelsea over the signing of the prolific striker, and paperwork for the deal will be finalized today.

Tammy Abraham will join Swansea City on a season-long loan and it is thought he will extend his contract with the Blues before traveling to Wales.

The Paul Clement led side beat off stiff competition from the
likes of Newcastle United, Brighton and Hove and Everton.

The 19-year-old Abraham, who is representing England at the U21 EURO, netted 23 goals in the league for Bristol City last season.

Why Gernot Rohr Is A Special Coach – Alex Iwobi Reveals

Arsenal Nigerian forward Alex Iwobi has given his thoughts as to why coach of the Nigeria senior national team Gernot Rohr is different from other coaches he has worked with.

Iwobi made his international debut for Nigeria during the reign of Samson Siasia as coach, and the 20 year old has since gone on to cement himself as a regular in the team since Rohr was appointed as coach.

Although Nigeria lost their last game 0-2 to South Africa, Iwobi insist the manager has a way of getting the best of of his players, which has helped them pick positive results in the World Cup 2018 Qualifiers before the loss to South Africa in the AFCON 2019 Qualifiers.

In an exclusive chat with Pitchingitblack.com, Iwobi praised the coaching methods of the Franco-German coach , labeling him as one coach who knows how to handle youngsters.

“Our new coach is proper cool,” he says with a beaming grin.

“His banter’s a bit different. It’s funny, but it’s different. He’s proper cool especially with the young kids. He’s always talking and trying to help us. Shouting’s not really his style. There’s so much young talent in Nigerian football at the moment, it’s a really exciting time.”

West Ham Insider – Talks Are Back On With Iheanacho After Man City Lowered Fee For Buy-Back

A highly placed sourced in the camp of West Ham has revealed talks with Manchester City Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho is back on after City lowered their demands.

Known and respected for having inside knowledge about West Ham transfer stories, and issues about the club @ExWHUemployee told Man City Watch, that West Ham resumed talks with the 20 year old after City lowered their fee for the buy back.

Iheanacho’s proposed move to West Ham has dragged on for months despite the speed at which talks progressed at the initial stage, which Man City insistence on a buy back clause said to be holding the deal.

Q : What’s the status on Kelechi Iheanacho to West Ham? A few weeks ago it looked a dead cert, now Leicester are odds-on at the bookies and things have gone a little quiet. I understand City’s demand for a buy-back clause could be causing problems?

Answer – The problem with Iheanacho, like you say, is that City have demanded a buy-back clause to be part of the deal.
The player himself doesn’t want to leave and this is also seen as a way of appeasing the transfer. The buy-back clause is said to be quite low and with Kelechi making it clear he only really wants to stay in Britain so he can obtain citizenship – and this has made us rethink our offer. A bid has been made and we are still keen but further negotiations are still required.

Q – West Ham are also keen on Olivier Giroud of Arsenal. Would it be the end of your interest in Kelechi if you sign him up or is Bilic after multiple strikers?

Answer – I think Bilic would like to sign both Giroud and Iheanacho. We struggled massively last season for not having enough forward options throughout the campaign, with first choice Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho spending more time on the treatment table than the pitch! If both forwards could be obtained for around £20m-£25m then I think we would sign both seeing as we offered £35m for one forward last year.

Rest in peace Sir (Coach) Kelechi Emeteole...... Your contributions and achievements in the Nigerian football scene shall always be remembered. It is well....

Omeruo Mourns , Laments Emeteole’ s Death
By James Agberebi

Super Eagles defender, Kenneth Omeruo has expressed his sadness following the death of ex-international and former Rangers, and Heartland coach Kelechi Emeteole in India on Wednesday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Emeteole, 66, was diagnosed for throat cancer and scheduled to undergo surgery in March.

But Completesportsnigeria.com gathered from a family source that the surgery did not go on as he was too old to undergo a delicate throat surgery.

Reacting to Emeteole's death, the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner wrote on his instagram page:

"I was glad few weeks ago with the news that your surgery was a success, only to find out you died this morning (Wednesday).. R.I.P Coach Kelechi Emeteole. May your soul rest in peace.. and may God give your family especially your wife the heart to bear this lost."

Emeteole was in charge of the Heartland team that lost the final of the 2009 CAF Champions League to Democratic Republic of Congo giants, TP Mazembe.

Heartland pipped TP Mazembe 2-1 in the first leg in Owerri but lost 1-0 in the second leg played in Lubumbashi.

10 Memorable Emeteole ’ s Football Facts

Completesportsnigeria.com's JOHNNY EDWARD highlights ten memorable football facts of the late former Nigeria international and ex-Super Eagles assistant coach, Kelechi Emeteole, before he passed away in the early morning of Wednesday June 21 2017, in India where he went for medicals.

1. 17 CAPS FOR NIGERIA

Emeteole had 17 International Caps and scored four goals for the Green Eagles of Nigeria after making his debut on July 13,1975 against Congo in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Brazzaville which Nigeria won 1-0 with a Sunny Oyarekhua goal.

2. 1st Goal For Nigeria Vs Zambia

Emeteole first scored for Nigeria against Zambia in Lusaka as Nigeria defeated Zambia 3-1 in Lusaka in an International Friendly game in 1976.

3. 2nd Goal For Nigeria Vs Morocco

Emeteole scored his second International goal on April 3rd 1976 against Morocco in an Olympic qualifier which Nigeria won 3-1 in Lagos.

4. 3rd Goal For Nigeria Vs Sierra Leone

His third Eagles goal was scored against Sierra-Leone on October 30,1976 – a FIFA World Cup qualifier vs Sierra Leone. Nigeria won 6-2 at home. Goals from Segun Odegbami, Aloysius Atuegbu, a brace from the late Thompson Usiyen, Kunle Awesu and of course Emeteole's goal sealed a remarkable victory for Nigeria.

5. 4th Goal For Nigeria Vs Sierra Leone

His fourth goal came on March 12,1977 in a 1-1 draw vs Sierra Leone in Freetown in a Nations cup qualifier.

6. Assistant Coach Stints In The National Teams

Emeteole was one of the Sebastine Brodricks' assistant coaches when the Golden Eaglets won the maiden FIFA U-17 World Cup (FIFA/Kodak U-16 World Cup then) in 1985, in China.

He was also an assistant coach as Brodericks also led the Nigerian lads to the 1987 U-17 World Cup in Canada. He also once served as an assistant coach in the national U-20 team, the Flying Eagles.

Emeteole also served in the senior national team, the Super Eagles, under the late Shaibu Amodu.

7. Nigerian League Veteran As Player And Coach

As a player, Emeteole distinguished himself playing in the Nigerian League of the olden days, the reason he was called up to the national team – the Green Eagles

He played for the Spartans of Owerri which metamorphosed into Iwuanyanwu Nationale. The club is known today as Heartland. He also played for Mighty Jets of Jos and Enugu Rangers.

The late Emeteole remains the only Nigerian coach to have coached Heartland FC on four different occasions.

As coach, he also had spells with Calabar Rovers, El Kanemi Warriors and Insurance of Benin. He was also an assistant coach to Tunde Disu at Saudi 89 FIFA U U20 World Cup.

8. Meeting With Idol, Arsene Wenger

His best ever moment, according to one of his bosom friends, Solomon Onu, was meeting his coaching Idol Arsene Wenger during a coaching clinic in England.

9. 2009 CAFCL Silver Medal Feat With Heartland

Another remarkable moment for Emeteole was leading Heartland as head coach to the final of the CAF Champions League in 2009 but regreted not beating the eventual winners TP Mazembe.

10. Emeteole The "Whistle-Blower"

One style that stood Emeteole out from other coaches was that he never yelled the names of his players from the sidelines during matches. Instead, he whistled their names with mouth and each time the particular player heard the whistle and responded by turning to his direction to receive instructions.

Source: http://www.completesportsnigeria.com/10-memorable-emeteoles-football-facts/

In addition to all the above, these must be stated also:

- Kelechi Emeteole led The Super Sand Eagles to her first Medal at the Caf African Beach Soccer Championships where Nigeria finished as Runners-up with silver.

- He also led the team to the 2006 Fifa Beach soccer World cup... Nigeria's first appearance in history having stars like Gabriel Agu and Isiaka Olawale.

- He was coach of the team when Nigeria won her first Caf Beach soccer title in 2007 and went on to lead the team to one of her two best finishes in the history of the Fifa Beach World cup... A quarterfinals finish placing 6th overall in tournament ratings. It was Uruguay who beat Nigeria 3-1 in that quarters duel.

Note: The other Quarter final finish was in 2011 but not under Kelechi Emeteole but Adamu Audu Isah Ejor... and that saw Nigeria produce one of the best classic games of all time in the history of the Fifa Beach soccer World cup standing toe to toe with Brazil in a game that ended Brazil 10-8 Nigeria... a super classic only few games in the history of the tournament can match.

NO CAUSE FOR ALARM ON CHAN PREPARATION, SAYS SALISU YUSUF

The Super Eagles are yet to announce the squad for the qualifiers, but the assistant coach claims there is no cause for worries

Nigeria assistant coach, Salisu Yusuf insists that preparations for the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers are going along well.

Salisu confirmed that there will be two camps, which will start in the first week of July while the second phase is scheduled for the last week of July.

The Super Eagles assistant coach also revealed that the Nigeria Football Federation will make public the list of invited players at the right time.

"We have searched and watched so many games and we have an idea of those that will be in the team for the first phase of the camp," Salisu told Goal.

"We don't have any problem with preparations, the NFF will make public the list of players invited at the right time.

"There's no cause for alarm. The league is still on, so that makes the players active and we want to follow the plan that has been set out.

"We shall have the two weeks camping from the first week of July for the first phase of preparation then in the last week of July second phase after which we shall head to the qualifiers. I think that's enough time to prepare."

Ex Eaglet Star Jack Ipalibo Scoring, Turning Heads At Villarreal, Eyes Russia 2018 With Eagles

Highly rated former Nigeria U-17 Star Jack Ipalibo has revealed his next season ambition at Spanish La-Liga side Villarreal in an exclusive interview with Owngoalnigeria.com.

Ipalibo ended the season on a high with a goal against the junior team of Barcelona, and the 18 year old who was a late omission from the Nigeria U-17 team that conquered the World at the World Youth Championship in 2015 also has his sight on breaking into the Super Eagles squad.

OGN – How will you rate your first season at Villarreal?

Ipalibo – It has been a very tough but great season for me and the entire team. Been my first season in Europe and also a great experience with the youth team of Villarreal.

OGN – How many tournaments did you play in the recently concluded season?

Ipalibo – I played in the Copa Campeones, Copa del Rey and youth La-Liga, all tournaments I will say had their own lessons and I learnt a lot from all of the games.

OGN – How will you rate your first season with Villarreal?

Ipalibo – I didn’t play in the matches of week 1 to week 7, because I was in Nigeria for paper works, so I didn’t start playing until matches of week 8.

OGN – How many games did you missed and how many goals did you score?

Ipalibo – I played all games expect the home game against Elche which I had a knock. I scored six goals and the peak has to be the goals against Valencia and Barcelona U-18.

OGN – What are your immediate goals at Villarreal?

Ipalibo – Playing with the first team in the La-Liga is my aim. Villarreal is a big team in Spain you know. So I need to work harder, gain more experience and when it’s time. I will make the La-Liga team.

OGN - Any dreams of making the national team of Nigeria anytime soon?

Ipalibo – Why not?, If I get to play games for Villarreal it’s normal for me to nurse the ambition of playing for Nigeria senior national team. The U-23 will be cool for now but there’s no crime for dreaming big, If Victor Osimhen can be playing for the team, what stops me from having such dreams of playing for the Super Eagles even at the World Cup 2018 in Russia.

OGN – Thanks for you time Jack.

Ipalibo – You are welcome, keep up the good works. You guys rocks.

Ex Nigeria U-17 Ace Femi Joins Portuguese Top League Side Belenenses, Eyes Eagles LB Spot
June 20, 2017 Nigeria

Highly rated Nigeria left foot dazzler Femi Balogun has joined Portuguese top league side Belenenses on a two year deal from newly promoted side Deportivo Aves.

Balogun signed a one year contract with Desp. Aves last season, but left the club after helping them gain promotion and will now defend the colours of Belenenses till the summer of 2019.

The former Kaduna United defender is originally a forward player by trade, very much at home playing as a left or right winger but last season he made a positive impression playing in an unfamiliar role as a left back.

He scored five goals last season for Aves, and has already outlined his priority this season, which includes building his abilities as a left full back which will help him realise his dream of representing Nigeria at the World Cup 2018 in Russia.

” My main target is to do well with my new team in the top division in Portugal. I truly believe I can help Nigeria solve the left back issues because I enjoyed myself playing from the role last season”, he told Owngoalnigeria.com.

” I represented Nigeria at U-17 level in 2008, and played in both league of the qualifiers which we lost to Benin Republic. It’s a pride to wear the green white green of Nigeria, and i’m looking forward to it”.

Otigba Names Ex-Arsenal, Real Madrid Stars As Toughest Opponents He Faced In Turkey

New Ferencvárosi TC central defender Kenneth Otigba has revealed the toughest opponents he faced while in Turkey.

The former Hungary youth-team skipper, who has committed his international future to Nigeria, was on loan at Kasimpasa last season, and scored three goals in 20 appearances in all competitions.

''It was a good move to go to Kasimpasa because I learned a lot,'' Otigba told Nemzeti Sport.

''Before that I was one of the strongest players in the championship, but in Turkey I faced a number of strong and fast footballers.''

Quizzed on the toughest opponents he faced in the Super Lig, Otigba replied : ''Robin van Persie, Samuel Eto'o or Vágner Love are skillful, but the hardest part was against Galatasaray, Lukas Podolski and Wesley Sneijder.''

The 24-year-old Otigba was approached by Premier League side Liverpool before he signed for Heerenveen in 2008.

Kalmar Confirm Interest In Liverpool's Nigerian Striker, Once Dubbed The 'Next Rashidi Yekini'

Kalmar FF Sports Manager Thomas Andersson Borstam has confirmed that the Swedish Allsvenskan side have made contact with Nigeria U23 international Taiwo Awoniyi with a view to a transfer in the summer.

Liverpool will loan out the teenager to a foreign club for the third consecutive season before the close of the transfer window because he is not yet qualified for a work permit.

It is known that Liverpool have a partnership agreement with Kalmar as part of the deal taking Awoniyi to Anfield, but Borstam has played down suggestions that a deal is imminent.

''It's good to get things done in advance. Maybe Liverpool is looking at a new environment to lend Taiwo to, but we have not come that far,'' Borstam told Fotbollskanalen.

''But he is in our minds and I have contact with him from time to time. We always try to keep in touch with different means.''
Kalmar were compensated financially when Taiwo Awoniyi joined Liverpool in the summer of 2015 as he had a pre-contract with the club.

Joebie:
A fantastic/world class etc player can be rendered ineffective by the opposition on a specific match day. That does not make the player less special. An average player can have a very bad game. That does not mean the player is useless. We can't judge a player by one-match performance. All our players have earned their rights to be in the team . However, roles they play, the opposition they come against, the tactics the coach employs and other many factors will determine their "shineability" on matchday

Consider your bold highlighted text.

I would disagree strongly with the ALL.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder they say. In this case the beholder is Rohr. Hence whether they have earned it in camp, during friendlies or in club matches, they all have earned their right to be in the team.

Leicester Entice Man City Iheanacho With Favourite Role After £25m Bid

Leicester City manager Craig Shakespeare is leaving no stone unturned in his bid to land Manchester City Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho.

Already a bid of £25m has been lodged for the forward, who has been told he can leave the club but only if a replacement is signed as the club need three strikers for next season.

However City are keen on inserting a buy back clause in any deal for the 20 year old, who was close to joining West Ham few weeks ago before talks stalled over the fee for the buy-back.

Although talks are back on with West Ham, Leicester City are now odds on favourite to sign Iheanacho as aside offering City a decent fee, they have also promised him a new role just behind the striker.

Leicester City already have Jamie Vardy and Islam Slimani as top strikers, Shakespeare will hand Iheanacho his favourite role behind the striker, if he agrees to join the club, a move which could make him force his move away from Manchester City.

The Nigerian although boast of a fantastic goal scoring record, he isn’t entirely at home playing as a lone striker, as he prefers playing just behind the main striker where his late runs into the box often go unsighted.

Leicester plan £25m move for Man City striker Kelechi Iheanacho
By John Percy

Craig Shakespeare is plotting a £25million move for Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho, as Leicester prepare to spend big this summer.

Shakespeare, the new Leicester manager, has been alerted to
Iheanacho's availability and is ready to pay a significant fee for the Nigeria international.

Iheanacho is free to leave the Etihad Stadium ahead of the forthcoming season, as Pep Guardiola is determined to bring in another forward, with Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez understood to be a top target.

And Shakespeare is set to move for the 20-year-old and attempt to steal in before Premier League rivals Everton, Crystal Palace and West Ham.

Leicester are targeting players with top-flight experience, after a disappointing summer of recruitment last year, and believe Iheanacho represents good value for the price required.

Shakespeare is keen to ease the burden on England international Jamie Vardy and sees the addition of another forward as a priority.

Harry Maguire became the first capture of the summer last week after leaving Hull City in a deal worth £17million .

West Brom's Northern Ireland international Jonny Evans is also on Leicester's radar, though the message from the Hawthorns remains that he is not for sale.

Amuneke disagrees with NFF on vetting of Rohr’s Eagles list

Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, is right to refuse the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical committee vetting his call-ups, according to former Flying Eagles coach, Emmanuel Amuneke.

Following the disappointing 2-0 defeat by South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in last week’s Cameroon 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said henceforth the national team coach’s choice of players before their invitation for matches will be vetted.

But this decision has not gone down well with the former FC Barcelona ace, who won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations with Super Eagles as well as the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games with the U-23 Eagles Dream Team 1.

“You employed a coach and you want results, so why must you begin to vet his list of players?” Amuneke queried rhetorically.

“The coach is a professional; he wants to achieve results and decides to invite players he feels can help him in the task of doing the job of getting the desired results.”

The 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup winning coach with Nigeria went on to express confident on the Super Eagles coach to deliver.

Isaac Success pledges allegiance to Nigeria

Watford FC of England forward, Isaac Success, has pledged his allegiance and commitment to the Super Eagles, saying he is ready for the big challenge to lead the team’s attack in the very important games lined up for the three-time African champions.

Injuries and circumstances have limited the former junior international’s chances with the Super Eagles, with only one appearance against Senegal in March 2017 under his belt. He came on in the second half in that game played at The Hive, home of League 2 clubs Barnet FC and London Bees.

The young lad was severally listed by Nigeria for matches after he broke into the first team of FC Granada in the Spanish top flight, before moving to Watford last summer for 12.5 million British Pounds.

“I feel bad that I have not been able to feature many times for the Super Eagles. There have been either injuries or some other issue during the times I was invited. I am however restating my commitment to the national team and I promise to give my best and shine whenever I’m called again.”, Success assured.

Carl Ikeme

Rohr's calvary on the mend
by Andrew Randa

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr will heave a huge sigh of relief as he ponders on the FIFA 2018 World Cup game against Cameroon in August as some of his key men have stepped up their recovery from injury.

Nigeria presented a very youthful lineup in the 2-0 loss to South Africa in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on June 10 in Uyo and the defeat was partly blamed due to lack of experience and leadership int he team.

Rohr was without the services of team captain Mikel John Obi, first choice goalkeeper Carl Ikeme and Victor Moses as the Bafana Bafana beat Nigeria on home soil for the first time, a first, also, in a competitive game.

With the imminent return of the trio and the likes of Odion Ighalo and Brown Ideye getting back to form, Rohr will be looking at the bright side of things.

Carl Ikeme, who has been out for nearly two months has already started gym sessions which mean he is well on the mend. He has worked out on the thread mill and started leg exercises at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

He is expected to be part of the Wolves pre-season squad which will gladden the heart of Rohr and Nigerians considering Daniel Akpeyi wasn’t exactly convincing against the South Africans.

Victor Moses had has a successful operation on his toe and reports suggest he is also making a fast and steady recovery and might be ready for the crunch game against Cameroon in August.

The Chelsea man has been one of Nigeria’s leading lights since Rohr took over with some impressive displays and was also among the scorers in Nigeria’s 3-1 triumph over Algeria in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier last November.

Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi is another Eagles who is making progress in his recovery from a successful operation. The Tianjin Teda midfielder has been out of action for about 11 weeks but is nearing a return to the field.

He has already started working with the ball and done gym work and it will please Rohr if his captain returns to full fitness before the crunch game as it was evident Mikel’s absence was felt during the loss to South Africa.

The Super Eagles currently lead Group B of the Africa zone of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with maximum points after two games.

A win against Cameroon in August will mean Nigeria is within touching distance for a third straight FIFA World Cup.
