I wont advise just putting it all in one stock,  plus you need to give more details next time about your investment strategy (are you into active trading or safe investing, a mixture of strategies? etc, time line etc (short, med, long term, mixture) ,  Learn more about you risk profile etc ,  See a few suggestions below which is not at all exhaustive,   since I don't know you or your risk profile, I'll play it safe by suggesting safer/less risky stocks,   the percentage distribution would be up to you,  totally dependent on you and your investment style/ objectives etc,  Hope it helps at least, all the best,

p.s. I'm surprised UBA left off Dangote Sugar from this their investible stocks list sha,  anyway, still a good & safe compilation non the less.

Hello people, abeg I am trying to get a 2nd broker with online presence( I already use UBA) ASAP, looking @ one with N1-2mil minimum ballpark, my options now are

BGL--I know min is N5mil but I've a close relative there who could prob negotiate N1-2mil for me
Vetiva--appears great, its N1mil, but I don't know why u need an existing customer reference or bank reference
ZSL-- but it appears some folks are having wahala with their online portal plus they are also N5mil

It appears Afrinvest doesnt have a great online portal right now, anyone have any other recommendations?

Looking for 1 of bigger companies, with same day execution and all that, one that is easy for me to open from the US.

Thanks and happy Trading!

@Bay1970

The choices are limited for good growth.
Presumably you want to cover your interest charge by the end of 12 months i.e about 6 months left.
My first choices will be Diamond bank or First bank(much as it hurts me) then Wapco, if you can get it now while it is in the low 70's.
Happy hunting.

@Naijadr, Though you didn't mentioned this, I'd recommend Cashcraft. I know it has gotten a bad rap and they have their own flaws too but I prefer them by far. Btw, I have 3 brokers and UBA is the worst in execution in my own assessment. I have also noticed that having a good and efficient account rep makes a lot of difference with these folks. Mine (with Cashcratf not UBA o) has been really outstanding.

@Bay1970, I know what you mean. UBA seriously pruned their list from previous. They don't even have Bank PHB. And no more POs. So Zenith is out of the question unless you could buy it on the floor with these daily strong bid. It depends on your risk level and how long you're willing to wait. Personally, I reinvested my money in FBN and I'm going to sleep, at least for the next 9months to a year. Even when the loan is due I might probably just pay it off and leave my shares. Something is cooking in FBN. "Belie dat"

'Raising funds at the capital market won’t save banks'
By Bankole Makinde - 13.01.2008

GROUP Chairman of Global Fleet of Companies, Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim has raised alarm that many banks would soon collapse in the economy.

He said the development would stem from the rate at which the banks rush to the capital market to raise funds through the now popular Initial Public Offer (IPO).

According to him, the banks have built their vision on the short road instead of the long and thorny road and so would not be able to manage the funds raised through the public offers.

The Group Managing Director of NICON Group of Companies, stated this at this year’s National Conference of the African Newspapers of Nigeria (ANN) Plc, which held at Jogor Centre, Ibadan.

He admonished employees to be loyal to their companies and strive to love their jobs compulsorily.

To be successful financially, Barrister Ibrahim said 25 per cent of one’s income should be invested on landed properties or savings towards such; 25 per cent in stocks (floating assets); 25 per cent as cash in bank while the remaining should be on waste (food and other items).
Re: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by samstone4(m): 11:16am On Jan 13, 2008
@Deoba

Feel your pain about PO.
The key is how many shares you wish to buy. High volumes warrant numerous applications through family, trusted friends and companies.
Even better if you can somehow get preferential allotment!
So far, all POs show significant capital appreciation and less risky than playing the secondary market.

@Nairalanders

What's the take on Acorn pp?
I have some link to the owners but don't intend to invest enough to warrant trying to use my contact.
I was a part owner of a similar company which collapsed for various management reasons and inability to get products with the collapse of Nigerian refineries.
Concerned with the small margin of the business and all the brouhaha with any attempt to deregulate the downstream petroleum market.

I have about 600K to invest this week and these are the stocks I am planning to go for tomorrow, please what is your take on this my options?

NEM
UNIC
FCMB
AG Leventis
C& I Leasing
Re: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by Naijadr: 5:40pm On Jan 13, 2008
hey crazyT, I would actually pick 1 company and just put the whole 600K in it that way you can maximize volume and profits quicker. The list is great but I really like UNIC because of its great fundamentals and management, I think that it will prob drop below N4 again this week. CILeasing's potential for quick company growth is also good.
UBA is still at a good price too, and will rally in anticipation of march. Its at N51, and could get up to say N65 or so then, that would make you about N150k profit after fees.
FCMB would prob be good in anticipation for rally later in the year like around Sep or so.

@K2,

Please, let me have the contact information of your account rep at Cashcraft and I will want you to shed more light on how effective and efficient they are in terms of their services.

Because on this forum, a lot of people have criticized their activities. I think you're the only person that have a good report as per their operations.

Peace.

I want same day execution and thats hard to get, its more like 2-3 days, and I'd like online access to also just set purchase requests and log on later to see that it was purchased. I'm going to be putting a large chunk of money in the NSE so wouldnt want to risk losing just because it was purchased wed when I made request monday morning. I'll still have what I've with UBA in regards to my smaller portfolio and I love the rest of their NRN services. Its good for those just starting off cause of its N250k minimum, matter of fact I'm starting my little sister with them.

@K2really most of all I've heard of Cashcraft hasnt been great, I figure since I can meet the minimum for some of the bigger ones that provide better overall services, I'll just go wit them. Strongly leaning towards Vetiva now

@Tonyjon, dont even get near Cash craft with a 10 foot pole.Their services are horrrribllleee.It takes them an average of 3-4 days to execute a sell or buy order. My experience with them has been pathetic.

I am also getting fed up with UBA Stockbrokers too. Imagine, I placed an order on the 13th of Dec. After sending numerous request for update, I was told on the 28th Dec that the mandate could not be carried out because the price i put (max price limit) was higher than the closing price. What? Max price means buy below the Max price stated. Who complains when you tell him to buy something for 7.4 max and you can get it for 6.7? I suspected something fishy happened though.

The NRN service is very good but what is the use and convenience if the Stockbrokers are this bad?

Sad but sounds like something that could happen. Its a big bank so I dont expect great service because of the low minimum. I just set up a CSCS online account, so at least I can watch and see what happens with that one, but I'm taking big chunk of money I'm putting into somewhere else so that I'm not worrying. I'm setting them up for my younger sister just so she can start in the NSE with a low minimum and also have access to their NRN features like bank acct, mortgage and all.
I sent a buy order since tuesday and I dont know if its been purchased and prob wont know till maybe monday, I dont like that, it was N120k but what if that was N1mil or more,
If you can meet minimum for the bigger companies then I'd suggest going with them. The NRN features are great, I needed a bank acct on ground that I could operate with ease from here (helps with relationship manager), plus interest rates for home mortgage is like 8-10% compared to the 17% seen with regular naija banks. Realize its a bank first of all b4 its a brokerage firm, so thats not their main priority, prob best for those who just place order for long run.

Guys, some people have complained about LeadCapital , but they are working for me ooo. i place orders online and follow up with a mail, (the RM never picks his phone) , only when my price is too low, or a stock is on full bid (this one forget about them in this case, no show at all)  that i don't get what i asked for. i get purchase confirmation the next day.(though end of the next day) but it is always carried out.

I contacted a guy in the IT section and he says posting online is much more reliable that email to the RMs (infact,   i have had conflicts with this though, sent via the 2 mediums and got double what i asked for, )

just what i am experiencing, and it hasnt been too bad,  wink

least i forget, most importantly, i always place orders the in the morning, any time before trading starts (9am)

Re: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by Atlantic(m): 8:16pm On Jan 13, 2008
Guys,
Selecting a Stock broker should be based on "Horses for Courses" approach. Just like every other business, they will typically focus more on their most important clients and then down the list. So my strategy (albeit with some pains) is using a big, a medium and a small house for my transactions. I found out that its much easier for the small house to buy or sell for me, and of-course I get special! treatment, while I have to call and almost beg the big/medium houses.
Bottomline: If you cannot compete with Pension Fund or Big time Inst. investors then look for a small/medium house that will value your custom.
