Ikwerre-Igbo Relationship As Seen By Ohanaeze Indigbo

Author: Okachikwu Dibia, Abuja.
In the interview with President, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Ralph Uwechue, published in the Daily Sun March 10, the President was asked what efforts he was making to unite Igbo in Rivers and Delta states, he said: “First of all, it should be understood that these factions who now deny the fact they are Igbo did so only after the civil war; take for instance the Ikwerre people… fully identified with us during the pre-civil war era but because the Igbo lost the civil war, a kind of stigma was smeared on them making a lot of people to start adjusting their names to sound less Igbo…”. This statement is misleading and not correct.

First of all, Ikwerre is not Igbo. We have made this clear even before the civil war and that was why some Igbo accused Ikwerre of sabotage during the war. Second, in all efforts by the minorities in the former Eastern region to agitate for their own political, social and economic recognition and liberty in the Eastern region and Nigeria at large, Ikwerre participated fully: hence, the late Chief E. J. A. Oriji and others represented Ikwerre before and during most of the conferences set up to address the fears of the minority ethnic groups in Nigeria. Third, in May 1963, Ikwerre people formed the Ogbakor Ikwerre Convention to state that Ikwerre is a distinct ethnic group from any others in Nigeria. Fourth, in the 1964/65 elections into the Federal House of Representatives, National Council of Nigeria and the Camerouns (NCNC) nominated an Igbo man named Mr. Eluguronu to represent Ikwerre in the House. Ikwerre rejected it and fielded young Nwobidike Nwanodi as an independent candidate and he won. Fifth, Ikwerre’s participation in all the movements for the creation of COR and later Rivers States clearly shows Ikwerre’s rejection of been Igbo.

Let the point be made that right from about the 16th century, the Igbo has been in touch with Ikwerre (through slave trade, Arochuku activities, goods trading, hiring of labour for farm work, marriages and politics) and had always wanted to dominate, colonise and take over Ikwerre at all cost and by all means possible. This is natural especially where the dominated people are better endowed than the colonising power, coupled with the ever tendency of a bigger group to swallow a smaller one and whenever the latter refuses, the former resorts to cheap propaganda. That is exactly what Chief Uwechue and Ohanaeze Ndigbo are bent on doing to Ikwerre. In this unholy enterprise, they appear confused: for example, while some of them claim that Ikwerre sabotaged the Biafra project, Uwechue has said that Ikwerre did not. Truly, Ikwerre did not, just like every other minority ethnic group in the former Eastern region. How could we when the Igbo were in absolute control of the region? So, we fought for Biafra. When another colonising super power (Nigerian forces) arrived, Ikwerre had no option than to surrender and cooperate with them. Hence, Ikwerre actually fought the war on and for both sides.

After the war, some of the ill activities of the Igbo in Ikwerre were corrected. In the case of names, the Igbo first changed the original Ikwerre names into Igbo names in an attempt to force Ikwerre to become Igbo. So at the end of the war, some Ikwerre decided to assert their original names; hence, Igirita was changed to Igwuruta, Isoba was changed to Choba, Amaweke was changed to Rumuokwuta, etc. Even individuals suffered the same humiliation when their names were forcefully changed from Ovunda to Obinna for example. Even the original name of the Ikwerre ethnic group, which is Iwheruoha was changed to Ikwerre by the Igbo. Some names have been retained (like my surname) to reflect part of the Ikwerre colonial journey, just like a Yoruba Nigerian bearing the name Matthew. Does this make the Yoruba man an English man? No!

On a more serious note, if the Igbo insists that Ikwerre is Igbo, they should provide concrete sociological and historical evidences to prove their case beyond the whimsical factors of appearance, language and name, which no longer can correctly and truly define a people in today’s world.

Another confused goon. He should have talk to former Gov Peter Odili before before denying his father. And for this guy to invoke the name of a proud Ikwerre-Igbo man like Chief Nwokedi Nwanodi, a man I knew very well through my father in order to justfy this inferiority madness is unforgivable.

Anyone can choose to become what he wants to be, but do not draw the name of others into your cause of choice. With Nigeria, probably one day, an Atabala will deny ever having any contact with water and will have a podium to express it.

When I said many Ikwerres don't see themselves as Igbos many Igbos thought I was Igbo bashing. Jus see them as your fellow Nigerians. They can deny the fact that they have Igbo ancestry cause their language and even names proves they do but they just don't see themselves as Igbos. Just love them for who they are.

I truly believe the "War on Biafra" is still going on. Instead of guerrilla warfare, what we have is tribal brainwashing.
So sad.

It is more-so the stigma attached to been igbo in Nigeria. Anyone who is Ikwerre believing that identifying themselves
as a separate ethnic group in Nigeria will make any difference to the Nigerian populace are just deceiving themselves.

The same thing happened to me, I told them in one of the threads that no ikwerre man sees himself as igbo, they almost crucified me. Now here it is coming from an ikwerre man that they are not igbos; yet some igbo people here are still insulting him. Is it now by force to become igbo??

many ikwerres that deny igbo is either inferiority complex while with other nigerians or for political gains.iwuruoha is also igbo in meaning and sound.the ekpeye influenced ikwerre in some ways but i live with them and observed the gap between them and other igbos they call isoma or isuama.highly inter-married with other igbo groups, very similar culture.99 percent of ikwerres speak central igbo.they feel more advantaged being in rivers state.they also always try to claim similarity with the actual riverine people while the later know that ikwerre is obviously upland igbo.

Why are the so-called Igbo's hounding the Ikwerre's?

Isn't that akin to 'Nigeria' hounding Biafra for wanting to breakaway?

If the Ikwerre's do not want to be recognized as Igbo's then keep it moving.

I must say though that having lived in PH for so many years a fair few Ikwerre's actually see themselves as Igbo.

Can the eye reject the head or can the hand reject the body were it came from. If that should happen, both the hand and the body would suffer.

This matter is about preserving culture and identity. There are lots of statistics that are not favorable to the Igbo nation. The igbo language and dialects including ikwerre is dying out and a host of other things.

This idea of Rivers igbo, Delta Igbo, Ikwerre Igbo, Ika igbo, Cross river Igbo is complete nonsense. For example, When you mention Cross river Igbo, the people of arochuku comes to mind. What is the different between the arochuku's and the people of Oguta in imo state. Some people would agree that the Aros are more igbo that people from Oguta. This same group will also argue that people from Asaba in Delta are more igbos than people from Oguta. As far as I am concerned, igbo is igbo.
If ikwerre was located in Abia or Imo, would they issue of seperate identity be mentioned. I once asked an Igbo friend from Delta state that if the river niger that seperated Onitsha-Ado from Asaba was filled with sand, where would the dividing line start. Will it start from Asaba or farther down the road.

As we speak, the Ikwerre dialect is slowing dying out. they should continue adding "R" to all their names and streets.

however imao, igbo is not a single ethnic group.there are hundreds of fragments that see themselves different from others.the ikwerres are trying to lay emphasis on their difference with other igbos without bearing in mind that the difference is wide spread across igboland.its as good as saying that ijebu is a minority ethnic group and not yoruba.this thread should be in culture section.

The beautiful thing about society is that nothing remains the same. The ikwerre probably bear historical links to the igbos but like most other cultures, over time and through evolution they're now a nation of their own. My echie friend during service, David categorigally distinguished himself as an ikwerre man though he was very fluent in igbo language. Infact i never knew of the link between igbo and ikwerre till i saw it on NL.

Thank u Abagworo.

The problem is that there is a lot ignorance in the Ikwerre community. Their ignorance is painful. The differences they point out are the same differences between the Abakiliki and Owerri ppl.

Edoyad, u must be blind.

When we say Igbo what Igbo are u talking about coz Igbo ppl are very diverse. What part of Igbo land are u comparing the Ikwerre to?
BTW The Eche are not Ikwerre but they used to call them Eche-Ikwerre but as usual in Rivers state every village wants to claim its an ethnic group.

Rivers is not just Ikwerre, we have Ndoni, Eche, Ekpeye,.

People from Ikwerre attend my church and I've had the opportunity to be around them. They are clearly Igbo.
The Ikwerre speak Central Igbo just like other Igbos do coz that is more intelligible btwn all Igbo groups. I can understand Ikwerre dialect better than Izaa yet ppl talk nonsense.

Zebra,
Ignoramus ka iwu. Ikwerre dialect is different just like Owerri, Awka, Anioma, Enugu dialects. There is no ONE IGBO language. Igbo language varies from state, town to town. The Ngwa dialect is more related to the Ikwerre and Riverine dialect than it is to Anambra state dialects.

Abakiliki of Ebonyi says "NJOKWA" while many us who speak the central Igbo say "Ndeewo" Greetings
Ikwerre of Rivers say "Meka" while many of us who speak the central Igbo say "Dalu" Thank you
Awka of Anambra say "Waa" in central Igbo its "Mba" NO
Awka - Obu - In central Igbo its "Obi" Heart
Anioma in Delta - "Emeke" - In central Igbo and Awka its "Emeka"

SAME DAMN meanings.

I called u dumb for dragging the IJAW and Efik into this. They are not Igbo jare. I am part Efik-Ibibio myself and have Ijaw relatives too. We know the difference. Ijaw and Efik languages are no dialects of the Igbo language so quit being silly.

Edoyad,
Why drag on an argument u can never win and have no knowledge of? Are u even Igbo talkless of Ikwerre-Igbo?

Owerri people are bonafide Igbos yet I AM NOT FROM Imo state
Nike people are Igbos and I AM NOT from Enugu state.
Anioma are Igbo and I am not from Delta state.
Nkwerre ppl are Igbo and I'm not from Abia state. SO WTZ UP?

Eche is not Ikwerre just like Ndoni is not Eche nor Ikwerre. They are all Igbo groups.

Buddy states in Nigeria are all artificial boundaries hence your argument holds no weight.

This is an utterly brainless analogy. As long as you were born and stay in the African continent, you are an African.

'Igbo' is an Ethnic group. wikipedia's definition below

An ethnic group is a group of people whose members identify with each other, through a common heritage that is real or assumed- sharing cultural characteristics[1][2] This shared heritage may be based upon putative common ancestry, history, kinship, religion, language, shared territory, nationality or physical appearance. Members of an ethnic group are conscious of belonging to an ethnic group; moreover ethnic identity is further marked by the recognition from others of a group's distinctiveness.

So if these fellows do not identify with you, and they are officially recognised as a separate and distinct ethnic group, why make a fuss over it? It really matters not if you share history, it's what happens today that counts.

@udeuze, larger groups cannot just wake up and impose their identities on smaller civilisations no matter the similarities between them. If there's a rejection of your claim by as much as 1 person(of which we know there're more than) then they have a case to be heard.

Help me tell that daft that is trying to force another ethnic group to accept being same with his own. i wonder why some igbo people would even bother themselves about that; na wa o.
Formerly we use to look at minorities from the north like Plateau, southern kaduna, niger, bauchi, adamawa, nasarawa, etc. as hausas. But these groups today have come out to say they are not hausas and that is what is happening today, they are not hausas. But prior to the nigeria civil war they had that single identity, "hausa". can you force the birom man now to say he is hausa? can you force the southern-kaduna man now to say he is hausa? can you force the gwari man to say he is hausa? can you force southern-borno people and adamawa to accept hausa identity today?

Why can't the ikwerres refuse to be igbos too?
