At least he has dealt with the issue of Owen Hargreaves, who is not in contention to face the Baggies despite the statement of his knee surgeon Dr Richard Steadman earlier this week that the midfielder was going to play. Hargreaves is suffering from a minor calf complaint and Ferguson is clearly unimpressed with Steadman's interjection.

"Owen is not ready," said the United boss. "He is injured. He has missed training for the last few days. We are having difficulties with the doctor in Colorado coming out with statements that are not accurate.

Not Anderson's fault. The whole team were very poor today. Credit to West Brom as they worked harder than us and pushed us all the way even trying to play football not just lumping the ball up the pitch.

The Manchester United striker, 24, has seen a £300,000-a-year deal with Tiger Beer axed following the lurid claims about his private life.

The firm’s television advert, entitled ‘The Game Never Ends’, showed Rooney winning the last bottle of the beer in a bar with some sublime ball skills.

However it has now been withdrawn.

The news is another blow to the England international, who was previously ditched from a campaign by Coca-Cola – a development which has cost him £600,000 a year – following newspaper allegations of extra-marital affairs.

He is also under scrutiny for his form, which has suffered since an ankle injury picked up in the Champions League quarter-finals last year.

Having only scored one goal since for club and country, he seemed to openly defy United boss Alex Ferguson this week by refuting the Scot’s claims that he has been carrying an ankle problem this season.

Rooney has been left out of the last two United matches, and all eyes will be on Old Trafford this afternoon when they take on West Brom.

The question on everybody’s lips is: will Ferguson assert his authority over Rooney by leaving him out of the side, or play his star man?

Ferguson has ruthlessly dealt with player defiance in the past, as such luminaries as David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Roy Keane will testify.
