POSER.

Talking about plurals.

Please, help.
Forum (e.g. Nairaland). And the plural form is:

'Forums' or 'Fora'? Or both?

Stadium (e.g. The Emirates stadium). And the plural form is:

'Stadiums' or 'Stadia'? Or both?

Oya!

LOL! my spell check did the work for me!  wink underneath manifestoes is the usual red wavy line suggesting that it's incorrect.

So I guess the answer should be manifestos

1. Forums and Fora are both correct plural forms.

Hmmm, the plural form used depends on context IMO.

In the example you highlighted ie about internet forum e.g Nairaland, I think the correct plural form to use is Forums cos it'd be silly to say something like "different fora exist in cyberspace" lol.

Just doesn't sound right to me or is it? undecided

2. Stadiums and Stadia are also both correct plural forms and can be used I think.
e.g There are 20 stadia (stadiums) in Nigeria.
.

Fora means places of meeting/assembly, public squares, maketplaces or village squares.

What about;
she's pregnant for David ? ( I see this in Nollywood movies), Dont get me wrong, I LOVE THEM
This is incorrect english, it should be "she's pregnat from David.

Pregnant from? I'm not too sure about that, though I can see where you are coming from.

The aim of the expression is to ascribe responsibility for the pregnancy to David, and in that sense, pregnant for, I believe, should be the standard form.

Ola what do you think?

hello people! The way you find my saying "pregnant from" as wrong is the same way I find the saying "pregnant for" equally strange. I think u can agree with me that saying something a certain way all your life does not make it correct. Its just that its the way you know it, and if you hear it said differently, it sounds wrong. I am refering to all of us. I am not saying either of us is right. I was surprised to see people saying I am wrong. Anyway, can anyone else give us their input ( Not Naija's or Zimbos because it will be a long debate). Thanks

No! It wasn't meant to ridicule your point, darling.

Maybe you are right. But, you wanted us to say something, to the best of our knowledge.

This afternoon, I will try to examine this question in a way that will satisfy us all.
Sorry darling, you are a friend. Don't be annoyed.

Oh Ola Olabiy ! sorry if I sounded annoyed, I'm not actually. This topic is to teach and not redicule us. I love everything about your country. It has a vibe that u cannot find anywhere in the world. The mixture of highrise buildings, slums, greenery, the markets, the traditions, the food. I'm hooked on the Nairaland site. God bless u

Hmmmmm.
Interesting.

From the little effort I have made so far, it seems 'pregnant for' is the best example of Nigerianism. I am still working on this. So, nothing scientific yet.
