Re: ABC Of Common Errors And Mistakes In English by olaolabiy: 5:35am On Jan 15, 2011 |
About legal technicalities, you can probably sue any bank that uses 'understood' if you're charged for defaulting. Default on your loan/debt and tell them that the 'agreement' you signed was only 'understood' at the time of reading/signing it. And that any understanding of the said agreement's in the past and does not reflect your current state. This companies are clever, I tell yah, Blank. Just kidding oo |
Re: ABC Of Common Errors And Mistakes In English by blank(f): 12:59pm On Jan 15, 2011 |
I still insist that "Have you read and understand" is wrong compared with "I have read and understand". The latter sounds better than the former. Can u show any of those links that say the former? Couldn't go through them all. |
Re: ABC Of Common Errors And Mistakes In English by olaolabiy: 4:21pm On Jan 15, 2011 |
Blank my Blank You are one tough cookie! What is the difference between 'have you read and understand' and 'I have read and understand'? I just don't want to post this directly from my bank because I have to log in. If a box is to be ticked (instead of your signature), it normally starts with 'have you read and understand'. I will be back |

blank: Thank you, Blank. It is what I'd like to call 'legal' (lawyers') English. That's why it's mostly used in agreement/terms/conditions/rules-related contexts. Both are correct. |

Hey Miss Ileke_idi, sorry to dissapoint you and sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Mr Ola Olabiy assigned me to gently tell you that the School is no longer enrolling new students, all the classes have been oversubscribed, it was an unprecedented thingymawhacchumacallit, sorry you can try your luck again next century, you might be lucky then And we don't really blame you for attending the enrolment 26 days behind schedule, it was not your fault, we all know Ekiti State does not have a single tarred road hence in the rainy season you guys have to use canoes and swim to get to civilisation But don't worry dear when I graduate from University in 40 years time, and run for Presidency, vote for me and I promise to come and tar the whole of Ekiti State to bring it to the 21st century It is well yeah I say its okay to stop crying haba, you honestly don't want to see your mouth I swear and next time try using a waterproof mascara instead [s] Thief, see her mouth like a fish's own, here am I bemoaning the fact that I only just have a meagre 6 eye-candies (Denzel, Ola Olabiy, Mai Suya, Slap1, Ferdiee, and Stevetboy09) to ogle and conquer and ravish, and she is here with her longthroat, ole, barawo, thiefy thiefy jankoliko, hands and eyes of my men joo Now where was I before i was rudely interrupted, yeah, oohhh, see those beefy rippling muscles on that Aboki Mai Suya, oh la la, oh gosh, whoever told that Odunnu that packing 8 Brazillian weave on her already humongous head at once is fashionable Now I can't see my Adonis Aboki wella because of her big head I berra come in early to class tomorrow so i can sit closer and get a vantage view of the whole action And God made him and He rested God is good [/s] |

Re: ABC Of Common Errors And Mistakes In English by Busybody2(f): 9:39pm On Jan 19, 2011 |
ola olabiy: Its the second one methinks. You wouldn't naturally use the present perfect tense in the sentence "I have understand the rules of Nairaland" as such, as generally as it is grammatically wrong, so why is it okay to latch it on as a present tense? Usually in a present perfect tense, the main verb following the auxilliary verb should be in past participle innit Examples include "we have arrived". Hmmm, if this is the case then why is "we have come" correct too, and not we have "came" Yeparipa my head is hurting, and I was only asking on behalf of Stevetboy09 oh, because it is the New Year and I am trying to be my Brother's keeper, a nice change from my constant gloating and rubbing his face in it that I am always coming first in class and is the teacher's pet Oh, I knew we should not have allowed him into Primary 7 with us, he belongs in kindergarten |

But, seriously oo, I pleaded with Stevet not to attack you (being a man), he didn't listen to me. I didn't like that! SLAP1, for example, wouldn't have bothered. Odunnu hasn't said anything - nothing abusive, at least. Hence, my respect for her. She's simply a wonderful girl. I tell yah |
