All is fair in 'war' and love, they say. I hope Busy Body sees it that way, though. Her sense of humour is wickedly cool, I like it. Merry Xmas to Prof. Ola and all my 'course-mates'. May we always remember . . .
Re: ABC Of Common Errors And Mistakes In English by olaolabiy: 9:49pm On Dec 23, 2010
ola olabiy:

'WELL'.

When a compound adjective begins with 'well', it should be written with no hyphen when used after a VERB.

E.g. She is well informed.

But, when the adjective (compound) comes before a noun, hyphen MUST be used.

E.g. Busybody is a well-informed woman.

Its comparative and superlative forms are 'better' and 'best'.

E.g. My girlfie's the best-dressed woman on Nairaland. smiley wink cheesy shocked

British newpapers and magazines don't apply this Oxford RULE sha.
E.g. The Economist, TheSun and erm. . Evening Standard, I think.

Did you watch Arsenal-Chelsea match? Did you watch it on Sky Sports channel?

About 10 minutes into the match, the commentator (Martin Tyler?) said:

"Clichy plays the shot with his right foot; not his best foot".

Is this statement correct or incorrect?

Please help.

good question. "best foot" is used so ubiquitously nowadays that I wouldn't consider it to be incorrect.

Funnily enough.

Re: ABC Of Common Errors And Mistakes In English by AjanleKoko: 10:59am On Dec 30, 2010
Most of these errors are due to the gradual infusion of Pidgin English into everyday spoken English.
I don't think our English teachers are responsible per se. Since Pidgin is heavily into ad-libbing, you find that people will incorporate the same ideas into regular English, creating phrases and words on the fly, or modifying existing words and phrases to convey meaning.

People should separate the two in their minds; pidgin English is different from English.

^^^

What about influences from mother tongue/first language.

We also have to recognize and promote our version of the language: Nigerian English.

South Africans have their own. Phrases/clauses like 'live large' and 'large it' are South African.

That is basically the root of these 'errors'. The way a child speaks is influenced by [what is spoken] his environment.

"Best foot" clearly SOUNDS correct because it's been in use for a long time. "Better foot", however, IS correct. But it's better to use the former in informal/everyday writing and use the latter in 'hyper'-formal writing. Thanks for that link, I've subscribed 'shaperly'.

Oyinda explained it as well.

We have to keep this in mind: there are exceptions to language rules.

Thanks.
