Wether she knows how to speak english or not, the most important thing is that she has the power to speak the Universal language which is MONeY and no matter how she speaks the ordinary english, there are professors who are ready to prostrate before her because of the power she wields.
Afterall we all learnt English !!!

A great entrepreneur was once asked to calculate what the outcome of investing the sum of 2000 Dollar at the rate of 20% per annum for 20 yrs will be,
His reply I don’t know, the moderator said this has prove his point that the entrepreneur is uneducated and just lucky to have found himself where he was.
The entrepreneur replied, I don’t have to crack my head with formulas that a 20 pence calculator can produce in 2 seconds and that was the reason why he employed an accountant.
The great entrepreneur said he would rather busy himself with idea that will move his organization forward.
Madam has chosen to focus on what is important, Nigeria first Lady.
It is said that ordinary minds talk of people, while average minds talk about events, only great minds talk about idea, which class do you belong to ?

THE STATEMENT:

" MY HUSBAND, DR GOODLUCK JONATHAN AND SAMBO IS A QUIET PEOPLE, "

ANALYSIS:

* DR GOODLUCK JONATHAN and SAMBO are referred to as one people because they are in the 2011 race together.

Therefore the use of 'IS' is correct.

THEREFORE, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG IN THAT STATEMENT. GO ASK ANY ENGLISH PROFESSIONAL.
Re: Madam Jonathan And Her English by cjayy(m): 4:09pm On Dec 26, 2010
IS IT NOT CORRECT TO SAY : ONE PEOPLE?

IF IT IS CORRECT THEN MADAME GOODLUCK JONATHAN IS CORRECT.

FINITO!

@ Ikandah

In your statement : ''Is GEJ and Sambo not a quiet people''

Look at this statement critically, it is correct english since GEJ and Sambo have common interest in 2011. They are even a pair. They are one two individuals, people or persons.

Or should we have said : ''Are GEJ and Sambo not quiet people'' ( It could also be correct) but when we consider the two persons involved (with common interest), the first statement is also correct.

In conclusion, @ POSTER, Madam GEJ is not wrong o!

Thats my own opinion.

Question is, are we sure She even made the statement now credited to her?

We have politicians and their proxies on this forum who will do everything to pull down their oponents.

She may have made some mistakes while delivering a speech but this is way too obvious even to a primary school pupil.

I'm taking this with a pinch of salt.

i beg make na leave the poor woman alone, how many malo gov's wives can alter a word in english besides english is not our native language.

I don't know about altering a word but I do know about uttering a word. You must be a malo yourself.

And what is it that she has focussed upon? So why do people study languages or are given prizes for oratory? Is communication no longer a crucial aspect of statecraft. Why does Johnathan try to make great speeches. Why does he not just focus on the "important things"? I can imagine that you will on one hand argue that Nigerians are smart and, on the other, expect them to be taken in by this your silly sophistry

Why wouldn't you take it with a pinch of salt since it was not attributed to Turai? The person referenced the post and you are doubting it! How many of the rumours about Turai or Atiku, do you question?

So positive stories about Johnathan = made by saints. Negative stories about Johnathan = made by politicians. Interesting! Let us just continue supporting these thieving woman and her husband and then lament why Nigeria is backward.

Some people are never realistic. Tell me you are impressed with the way the first lady speaks, tell me she can stand her ground when called upon to speak. No one is trying to bring GEJ down here.
There are several primary school children that will do better than that woman, believe me. No one is complaining about the way her husband speaks so don't claim anyone is trying to bring him down alright

" MY HUSBAND, DR GOODLUCK JONATHAN AND SAMBO IS A QUIET PEOPLE "

I honestly find it hard to believe that some contributors on this thread have indicated that there is nothing wrong with this statement allegedly made by Mrs. Jonathan. Has education in Nigeria become so bad? Also really worrying is the fact that out of all the posters who tried to "analyse" or edit the sentence, only one poster, omo Yoruba, was able to do so correctly. Most worrying, however, is the prevalence of the responses "English is not our language", "We all learned English", "Even English people make blunders". We are in the 21st century, people!!!! Even the Chinese who never really cared are taking time to learn English properly now and only employ NATIVE SPEAKERS of the language to teach English in their schools. What is the language of the internet? of international business? of technology? In a 50-year old country with 600 local languages (not dialects o) can we still blindly say "English is not our language"? What is "our language" then?

We do not realise the hole we are digging for ourselves with these statements because they fit in with the social and economic decay around us. Imagine a country that functions well with a First Lady making disgraceful statements such as this. Besides, Presidents and First Ladies the world over are expected to be articulate and communicate almost flawlessly given the sensitive nature of their positions. As the poster before me, Beta Things has pointed out, good communication is an important part of statesmanship. Imagine if Dora Akunyili released a bomb each time she opened her mouth right from her NAFDAC days. It would be hard to take her seriously.

I wonder why we are not saying "Biology is not our language" "We all have to learn Physics" etc.? The 20% who passed the WAEC exams this year are truly miracle workers considering the abominable levels to which the educational sector in Nigeria has sunk. Whenever I watch a Nigerian channel with friends abroad, I writhe in agony from embarrassment caused by the force of the "bombs" journalists and other graduates throw at us. I taught English in a secondary school during my NYSC and I reached the conclusion that English, rather than being a second language in Nigeria, is a foreign language like Spanish or German. Teachers of English in Nigeria need to be specially trained to teach it as a foreign language, the same way Spanish or French would be taught because the damage has been done already. Very few university graduates today can speak English as fluently as our Standard 6 qualification parents and grandparents did.

We really need to change our attitude towards communication. Mrs. Jonathan should employ the good services of a language instructor, she can certainly afford it. It´s no big deal and nothing shameful. I should think most people in sensitive public offices the world over do that.
Re: Madam Jonathan And Her English by Nobody: 8:02pm On Dec 31, 2010
I tire o,please you guys should let the woman be,being able to speak good english is not a guarantee to be a good first lady, its not a must that every nigerian must know how to speak good english, she just fell into the category of those who can't speak fluently so can we leave it alone already?afterall english is a borrowed language, let the white man come and speak her language perfectly let me see.RUBBISH.

True talk! abeg, no mind those educated illiterates who are EXHIBITING with pleasure the Colo-mentality syndrome for all to see.

Being able to speak English fluently is not a prerequisite to wisdom or higher IQ.

I can't really get it, she has poor spoken english, so Mr. President should have dumped her and marry another who can do it better?

,,, such is the great wisdom of the "educated" Nigerian.  I have even a better one; Mr. President should dump her and marry an English dictionary, It is the surest way to appease the "educated" majority.

May be she means that Goodluck and Sambo are not two people but one. We do not need good English. What we need is good leadership.

"Good leadership" in which you will continue to say "maybe what he/she means is this and that" abi? Not good English. We Nigerians encourage and support mediocrity and then start complaining when we get it.
