And what do you mean by objectively? You mean for the governor to bankrupt the state by opening up the treasury and let the doctors clean it out?

Objectivity cuts both ways,

The Lagos State government claims they have implemented over 90% of CONMESS. So the extra 10% is what will bankrupt the state abi?
You see how lies fail to add up?

NewsCaster:

MEDICAL doctors in the employ of the Lagos State Government have embarked on an industrial action. This comes as their counterparts in Edo State on Friday suspended their one-week strike.

The renewed strike is being strictly adhered to. When The Guardian visited the Isolo General Hospital, no doctor could be sighted.

However, a group, the Elders Forum, led by Dr. Olu Falomo, who is the Chief Medical Director of Maryland Specialist Hospital, condemned the strike, maintaining that the doctors could have employed other means to press for their demands.

Some patients, who had come to the Isolo hospital, said the state government should get blame for the strike because it failed to fulfil promises it made to the workers.

Hospital wards were characterised by reduced activity with few nurses attending to patients while cases of emergencies were being turned down.

According to Folomo, the strike is a betrayal of trust because the Lagos State Government has conceded more than is expected, saying the doctors are blackmailers who are insensitive to the plight of Lagos State citizens, particularly the poor masses.

“We consider this strike action one too many and we condemn it. In spite of the response given to them by His Excellency, the Governor of Lagos State, to meet all their demands during the last strike action, the doctors have decided to go back on strike without prior notice to their employer.

“We would not hesitate to point out the fact that most actors of these illegal strike actions are not Lagos State indigenes, their actions are perceived as unethical, faceless and unbecoming of thorough-bred medical professionals, who are purely opportunists and blackmailers.

“We wish to inform the general public that the perpetrators of this act are illegitimate and ordinarily do not have the locus standi to embark on any strike action, as their suit is pending determination in court, as to the legitimacy of being addressed as executive members of NMA Lagos State.

Falomo also said that the doctors are not sincere, considering that the government gave them houses and cars, maintaining that it is wrong for them to be asking for monetisation of their benefits and allowances and still be getting cars and houses from government.

I cant trade words with people that have chosen to base their whole arguments on a blatant lie, house ko car ni. If the gov is so magnanimous to provide cars and house which docs did not ask for as u say he has why not scrap that and pay the full conmess which they are asking for, that would be far cheaper wouldn't it?

Your lies make me sick to my stomach, if your words represent the gov's thoughts as I suspect they do, then I think I'm in full support of this strike as well. LASG is so disgusting with their attitude, If I was a doc there I'd have resigned long long long ago.

I'm sure they would if this gov dialogues with them openly and stops lieing and playing on their intelligence.

Rivers state, Enugu and some other state docs are on strike as well but I'm sure it would soon be called off, as those govs approached the situation maturely and in a civil manner, Ekiti docs didnt have to strike, the gov understood importance of health and put the docs on the full scale b4 they even asked several other states are paying too. . .what the heck is lagos state's problem, lagos state that is supposed to be the state others looks up to, this is very shameful in my opinion haba. . .

The docs have determined they wont go back to work until they are put on the correct scale for docs, Fashola do that and stop peddling car and house carrots nobody asked you for that, and that initiative is far more expensive to implement than what is being demanded for by far anyway, that's to show also that its just a charade.

If you are not going to implement, then sack them all like you and your master have planned and employ new ones. let's see what happens

Lagos Doctors Strike: Is the Hypocritic Oath still valid?

“My patients shall  be   my primary concern.” This expression is no doubt the key to the essence of medical practice all over the world. In the healthcare industry, the patient is king. The patient  is the reason for medical practice in the first place.

Without the patient there will be no doctor, nurse, pharmacist or any other  medical professional.

At every point in time, the patient has become a pawn in the hands of  the medical practitioners who have been using them to bargain with their employers in the high places.

Such bargaining, usually has not been  in the patient’s own  interest but for the benefits of the agitators.

What may be considered as news is the fact that the State Government after much pressures and deliberations from concerned stakeholders finally offered their olive branch in the form of a perceived 75 per cent increases in wages for the medical personnel in the state.

In addition, the state government also agreed to review the dismissal of Dr. Ibrahim Olaifa former Chairman of the State Medical Guild who was dismissed in the heat of crises, and to commence deduction of the Guild’s check_off dues through the state Treasury Office as well as review  the issue of tax deduction in order to comply with relevant Tax Laws of Government.

Despite the offers and for reasons best  known to the doctors, the olive branch of the government was rejected outrightly and the strike which  many have hoped would be called off continued.

Till this moment, Lagosians are still at a loss as to why the doctors and the government cannot reach an amicable agreement as responsible and responsive stakeholders in whose hands  they  have placed their health needs.

It is now clear that the doctors did not embark on strike in the interest of the patient. It is even less clear if the plight of the patient has moved the government enough to succumb to the demands of the striking doctors.  Just like the traditional old sayings, when two elephants fight, the grass suffers.  Lagosians remain at the receiving end.

However,  Medicine is supposed to be a humanitarian science. Whether this is true in Lagos is debatable.  Medicine is a calling and not a vocation.

Lagos doctors’ strike: Falomo lambasts FG, NMA

Lagos doctors’ strike: Falomo lambasts FG, NMA

Written by Muda Oyeniran, Lagos Monday, 07 February 2011

Chairman, Elders’ Forum of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), who is also the grandpatron of the Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria (AGPMPN), Lagos chapter, Dr Ore Falomo, has lambasted the Federal Government and the leadership of the NMA over the incessant doctors’ strike in Lagos State.

Falomo, who was reacting to last weekend’s resumption of strike by doctors in the state after they recently suspended a 14-week industrial action, blamed the Federal Government, especially the former Minister of Health, Professor Babatunde Osotimehin, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, for not considering the purse of the state governments before approving the controversial Consolidated Medical Salary Scale (CONMESS)

He also chided the leadership of the NMA for allegedly deciding to use Lagos State, where 70 per cent of all doctors in the country resided, as a testing ground for CONMESS-related issues.

“If the NMA President cannot solve the problem of CONMESS without resorting to strike, let him resign. I have already spoken to the leadership of AGPMPN to take over from the present crop of NMA leaders,” he said.

The Lagos state government claims it will need an extra 2.5Billion a month to pay doctors CONMESS  (Check http://www.lagosstateministryofhealth.com/news_article.php?article_id=145)
they also admit there are about 1500 doctors in Lagos state employment. The actual figures as of December were actually less than 1200, but let us use their figures. 2500000000 divided by 1500 by my calculater is 1,666,666 that is 1.7 million average extra per doctor. Now lets do another calculation, Governemnet says they are ready to increase consultants salaries by 400K. So lets asume all doctors in Lagos state employment are consultants that is 400,000 multiplied by 1500 . What my calculator gets is 600,000,000.  the difference between 600K and 2.5billion is  And this figuer is an exageration because less than 10 % of doctors are consultants and even for the consultants most will not get a salary increament that large. When the commisioner is ready to lie like this in the name of propaganda what other lies do you think he is telling the public.

Eko Ile:

What may be considered as news is the fact that the State Government after much pressures and deliberations from concerned stakeholders finally offered their olive branch in the form of a perceived 75 per cent increases in wages for the medical personnel in the state.

The State Government offered the doctors 75% of CONMESS, not aq 75% salary increase. Eko Ile knows this. So why is he deliberately posting falsehood here?

Now, Eko Ile's main argument is that Fashola could not implement the agreement because he needed the Executive Council to approve funds. So why didn't he honour the parts of the agreement that had to do with Dr. Olaifa and the review of the excessive tax deductions?

How do you expect the government to deliberate or take action on an issue that is pending at a court of law? Definitely the govt. Is not expected to take action until when the Court pronounce a Judgement on it or the Interested parties settle for an out of court settlement. As for the 75% you are hurling about, It's like you don't know Lagos state pays more than Any state in the nation. Simply re-digest the 75% issue in the article. The sentence did not in any way mean 75% of the CONMESS but 75% of their wages. So how are we not sure that an increment of 75% of the Doctors wages will not equal what is in the CONMESS? Remember when the last scale was being used Lagos doctors earns more than other doctors throughout the nation though they used the same scale but Lagos pays more than the other when it comes to Risk, housing, transport and other allowances since only The Basic salary can be fixed by the Federal government. Waiting to be prove wrong anyway.
Re: Doctors - We Are Not Intimidated By Tinubu' by Actionleap: 11:34pm On Mar 01, 2011
These doctors have broken their oath to save lives over pay. Many people are dead because of Lagos doctors wickedness. Frankly, you see the labour union thinks with their heads not these people that thinks with their arses. Employers are not liable to pay any worker that refused to work for 3 straight days without reason. Hence, labour unions abroad do 2day strike, come back to work on third day, then resume the strike again if their demand is not met. This way, they clear some back-logs. Unlike our labour unions who can afford to strike for 10years if time permits them without thinking of the effect on the economy. babies in incubators will die, people of life-support machine would die (in fact you need to see where these doctors pull the plug), blood in the blood bank would be contaminated.
Nigerian labour leaders are paddy-paddy with govt. Any govt that settles them would have their favour. They don't even know what to strike for. Just increase my pay o! How did a journalist die during childbirth due to the strike? The husband said they could not raise 150k. How come she does not belong to an HMO? Why can't labour ask that every company must register their staff in an HMO and set a reasonable level for the bill. At least any HMO should be able to pay for Cesarian operation for female staff.
