I get confused after every debate, and I just realized there is no messiah for 2011. Even a look on Nairaland will show great ideas that can change our nation. What I have to think about is how to effect change without this folks.  angry

My Final assessment:

The best thing about the debate for me was the mood. Very healthy debate and comfortable atmosphere.

Overrall, I give it to Ribadu. He made most points but still scores low due to the ramblings. (55%)
Next, Shekerau. He spoke good english but does not demonstrate that he can bring any change at all (30%)
Last AND the least! Dele Momodu. I enjoyed his humour but he was not here for votes. He just made me laugh (15%)

But, I am not impressed at all by the fact that none could inspire me. cry

What a 'debate'! we still have a very long way to go. There is nothing presidential about these lot, secondary pupils would have done better. Maybe there is the Nigeria factor to everything we do in Nigeria.

This was disappointing. You may laugh but out of all of them Dele was the most convincing for me, although I don't believe he takes his candidacy serious.

If Ribadu is willing to shut up and allow his vice president to do a lot of the work (like Buhari did with his Vice in the 80s) then that would be an appealing candidacy. Unfortunately such seems at ends with his character.

Buhari seems sincere but Bakare seems too much like Ribadu personofied, loud and vague, and Buhari doesn't seem clued in enough by his own on how to solve the nations problems, he just wants to be president. (Buhari and Adeola would have been gold)

Jonathan seems too much of more of the same. His Vice has never really been tested (although his stint in Kaduna was above average). For someone who surrounds himself with the peeople he does though, I don't see how another four years would be drastically different from the last year.

Shekarau has not really performed in Kano and on closer inspection his points though eloquently posited, appear vague and even fall apart in the light of tighter scrutiny.

We are in trouble o.
Re: Official Thread For What About Us? Presidential Debate by JeopardE(m): 10:22pm On Mar 25, 2011
Ribadu did much better this time around, but he still fails to convince me that he isn't in over his head. The only person who seemed to have a clue about how to actually implement policy was Shekarau. And despite his intelligence, I just can't trust him, especially with his questionable human rights record.

There is no messiah. We'll just have to decide what we can't afford to live with. Buhari still seems to be the man for the job, even despite his no-show here.

Fair judgement but let's not lose hope just yet. There are people like you and me who are learning from all these and one day, such people will get the chance to lead.

Whoever thought of this arrangement MUST have a great brain

FASHOLA AND LAMIDO
Nigeria can never be more better
Re: Official Thread For What About Us? Presidential Debate by SkyBlue1: 10:46pm On Mar 25, 2011
Fashola yes, Lamido no. It is a square peg in a round hole, give him minister of finance or something where he can actually be used to the best of his ability. This is like the whole Dora as Information Minister again. Running CBN and running Nigeria are not the same thing.

My brother , the debate is good but it should not be the beginning and end of the basis upon which we judge candidates. I believe in the near future , if election are free and fair and "do or die" politics continue to dwindle , we will see competent men and women , with the oratory skills to match their record of achievement and remarkable service delivery, involved in our politics .

For now , as I keep reminding most folks , the coming elections is about the President who will deploy our best brains and give them a chance to work . Ribadu , without equivocation, assured he would do this and his history at the EFCC confirms it . He cites his VP , fola Adeola , as an example his team will not settle for mediocrity. It is instructive as well that he asked Okonjo-Iweala to be his running mate but she declined . Long and short is that the next President should minimally know what he is doing but , most importantly , he should be willing to bring in others who know what they are doing extremely well , in their specialist area of competence , to the forefront and enable them to work unrestricted for Nigeria . I believe it is only Buhari and Ribadu who can do that . We would all like to see Femi Falana as AGF and col. Umar as EFCC boss . Those are the type of appointments we will gain,  under Buhari of Ribadu, that can change Nigeria rapidly. OBJ cannot be termed as overly eloquent or brimming with ideas but our former President got it right , initially, by bringing in bright minds like Okonjo-Iweala and letting them work. debt cancellation secured by the economic team that included Okonjo-Iweala was a great testimony to the ethos of bringing in the right people and protecting them to deliver . OBJ did not do it but he had brilliant technocrats who did .I have always insisted that Buhari and Ribadu are not the best we can produce but that they are the best for now and for what needs to be specifically achieved in the next four years.

What we need , as Buhari said , are strong institution built by strong men . jonathan fails woefully in that respect with his "business-as-usual" cabinet and appointees . Adoke is a poor AGF , Ringim is a poor IGP and the retention of Waziri speaks volumes for how GEJ thinks . All in all , I am not happy with this debate but , unlike most , it is still not enough to make me think we do not have Presidential candidates who can move Nigeria forward because I know precisely what the next President needs to do above everything else . He does not have to be the man of eloquence and ideas himself , although that would help , but he must be able to ensure the best hands are on board working together unhindered .

I give an example . If Femi Falana is AGF and Ribadu or Buhari give him total freedom to work we will see a vibrant Ministry of justice developing . Ribadu and Buhari therefore are not required to go out and articulate specific provisions of the law .

It is the same with Col. Umar (or someone similar) heading the EFCC and being allowed to work unhindered.

We will need a president who does not employ his pal as IGP becuase he has an eye on the election rather than on the safety of Nigerian lives and property.

The picture generally becomes clearer . Of the candidates running , Nigerians should vote for those who are sincere , passionate and can shun political expediency with an insistence on using square pegs for square holes.

@ Sky Blue, We both agree with Fashola, Good. Now for Lamido, I think he is a good idea, why?

1. He has GUTS! He is fearless and will be useful in cutting the excesses of government.
2. We need someone who is business minded. Someone who can build the economy. He knows where it hurts and he can shape a lot of things if he has executive power.
3. He is very disciplined in his own personal dealings.
4. Many Nigerians already believe in him. He can restore hope in government if he is there.
5. He is easily accepted across the country. He can easily serve as a unifying element. He doesnt seem to arouse much tribal / religious sentiments.

I stand by my previous post. Running Nigeria and running CBN are two different things. Give him minister of finance or something where he can make a difference (which could include leaving him in CBN or something which puts him at the helms of the economy - not Nigeria). Fashola has a track record of getting things done. Running the economy and getting thingd done and solid results are two different things.

Donald Duke on the other hand would make a very good VP to Fashola or Fashola a good VP to Duke, whichever way.
Re: Official Thread For What About Us? Presidential Debate by efisher(m): 11:01pm On Mar 25, 2011
Anyway, I get your point. For me, I will take Fashola as president and Lamido as VP. If he can't get VP, I will keep him very close to the top, in a capacity where he can wield more power than in CBN. He has proven himself too. I don't really know if he will have the power to do more than he is doing right now if he's made Minister of Finance. I don't know much about the role.

My thoughts--

Ribadu is a policeman and should remain so!! Give the man Presidency and Nigeria would descend into a state of confusion! I like him well well but he is not a president, he is a policeman. That is my conclusion after watching his pointlessness on the debate!! Cluelessness raise to the power of 50!!

Dele Momudu
choose an excellent job when he decided to be an Aristo photographer and give them an opportunity to showcase thier wealth!! H eshould stick to that!! The man was an exciting joke!!

Shekarau again was the best!! He has a good grasp of Governance. But you get to ask yourself, with all his knowledge, he should have made Kano a wonderment!!
I think though that he is posturing for 2015 which is fair. Come 2015, I might consider voting him!!

This was a boring debate though!!  But I must commend the organisers!! They did good!!

Big question, why was saint Buhari absent GEJ we all know would not be attending!! Why was saint Buhari absent?? Was he afriad he would perform badly again like at the NN24 debate??
