lebete3000: You can't run it all bro. What you need to do is to pay your accountant very well or else ,sorry is your case .. If you don't pay him well , Your inventories will never be the same Your cash will never be the same He will be declaring fake profit for you and you will think you are making it especially if you are drawing money from the account to fulfil other expenses not relating to the restaurant or bar business |

MejiLoyon: Thanks MejiLoyon for this enlightenment. This is how many business die and the unsuspecting owner will plunge into debt. Someone told me about similar thing they do. You own a business and you buy and stock goods to be sold in your shop. Assuming that you projected that after about a week you realize like 500K plus 50K profit and after they must have finished selling the good you stocked, and keep people to sell for you. When you are not there, they will sell the goods and restock the shop. When you come back you will hear that business is not moving. Now you will remain on that for weeks not knowing they are using your capital to run personal business in your shop, at the end of the month you pay for shop rent and other levies for them without realizing your projected profit. The thing is that if you are not smart, you will not discover because they will always balance the goods and non will be missing so you wont suspect them. So the key is to always visit the shop when they don't expect and take inventory of the stocks and check the books , don't wait till end of the week. Give them surprise visits. Thanks 4 Likes |

hospitality business is an interesting business and its very profitable depending on your location and other factors. theft happens in almost all the industry and its not only in Nigeria. one of the reasons why Dubai's hospitality industry keeps growing is because they always upgrade their security software to curb thefts. speaking with my little experience as an hospitality management graduate, theft in the hospitality industry can be curb through thorough monitoring and disciple. you can't leave your business for others to handle and you expect them not to divide your profit into two(not with the current "thief theif" naija mentality). FOR EMPLOYERS: Reception: Tell your front office supervisor to always make sure he/she knows the available rooms every hour (especially when you do short rest). you can walk in to check by yourself sometimes. Bar/lounge: this is the craziest department in the hotel cos its very easy to embezzle funds cos most times, the accountant will only check what you have in your account book. I've worked as a bar man for more than 4years. most times when my colleagues hand over to me, there's something we call "forwarding" (it's an act of selling some drinks and you wouldn't declare it but it'll still be in the account book that it's available). A bar man can tell you 5 big stout is flat and big stout use to be the most expensive beer that year. that's another shortage for the business. frankly speaking, I have also seen honest staffs that wouldn't take what you don't give them but they can tax customers baje. |

MejiLoyon: It's like people are programmed to be dishonest. Something very similar has happened to me as an employee in a international brand hotel. One year later after I was employed I had recorded and deposited more money than any other employee in my department, except for the department manager who has been there for upto twenty years. And the earliest employee in my department has preceded me by five years. I gathered all the proves I can, I still have them on my hard drive, and was planning to hand it over to the HOD (out of loyalty because, she recommended me to the HR), three days before I gave her the gist and proofs she got herself indicted in attempt to steal from the hotel and was sacked. A lot of people celebrated her sacked. Amongst them who I can not prove to be a thief is infinitesimal. |

IyaTola: Someone I know was charged twice for the same transaction. She told the POS agent she said it's a lie. She went to her bank to complain. The bank called the POS agent who later apologize to the woman and the money was pulled from her account and returned to the woman. Now mind you the woman and the POS agent don't use the same bank. 1 Like |

Your accountant should be able to print "end of day" report from the POS machine, that way he can easily discover the difference from what's being tendered by the sales rep and actual POS sales. Aside from this, I recommend you set up a proper Point of Sales system that helps reduce and mitigate this risk. 1 Like |

At a very luxury hotel my uncle owns, I was new and working temporarily, A bottle of beer at the bar sold for BTW #1,500- #2,500... I sat at the bar one day, counted more than 300 bottles sold, at the end of work, it was less than 100 bottles recorded, just about #150,000k instead of over #500,000k. Investigation began, this bar girls have mastered the art of buying beer from outside at #250 per bottle, once the bar sells at #1,500, they replace it with that of #250 pocketing #1,250 to themselves... In a day this girls go home with over #25,000 each everyday... I took my time to gather evidence over a period of 2 weeks, called the attention of the chairman, I did not tell the manager... Chairman wanted to get them arrested and blow the lid, warned him to calm down, when we called all those involved, 6 girls 4 boys, they all denied, we began to tender evidence and CCTV footage one after the other, we calculated loss for only 1 year amounting to almost #7m some claimed they started working less than a year ago, okay no problem, will u pay back, na so them start to de implicate, up to the bar manager, omo it was end of day and they claimed they will come back tomorrow to account, I advised they all be locked up till the next day, we locked up over 13 staffs that day, next day 7 staffs did not report to work, 3 came to render resignation, claiming husband asked her to resign, one claimed he had gotten another job, another said she was going back to schools another one said she was on her 8th month, pregnancy that never reach 7 months o... At a point we only had 9 staff in a place we usually have over 30 staffs... Within 1 month revenue increased from #6m/month to over #18m... My uncle no believe... 5 Likes 4 Shares |

bragamycin:that's the risk involve. But the percentage of the possibility of being caught can be appreciated, cetèris paribus. Even bigger cartels run on bigger risks. So, wetin we dey talk?. Look, I'm not encouraging it though, I've worked in a hospitality industry as a security officer before. I deliberately put this up to get responses that might likely blockade this kind of move, but so far, nobody has been able to come up with any. |

Joysticks: Well...guess what? You're not entitled to a job and nobody owes you one! If you don't like what you're being paid as an employee, start your own business! Employers have every right to pay their employees what they think is fair. As long as they agree. You have no right to steal from me after giving you a job! No be me born you! |
