NigeriaSat-1 is to be
decommissioned soon, even as
the newly-launched earth
observation satellite,
NigeriaSat-2, is now set for
commercial activities, an
official has said.
Mohammed Seidu, Director-
General, National Space
Research and Development
Agency (NASRDA) said this on
Thursday in Abuja during a
conference and facility tour by
the Nigerian Association of
Science Journalists (NASJ).
Seidu, who was giving a
rundown of the activities of
NASRDA, said that the testing of
Sat-2, launched in August 2011,
had been completed and
commercial activities would
take off soon.
The DG, who did not disclose the
specific time for
decommissioning NigeriaSat-1
and the takeoff of commercial
activities for the NigeriaSat-2,
cited security reasons as why
he could not divulge the
information.
He said that the satellite had
finally come to the end of its
life and needed to be
decommissioned so that the
fuel left in it could be used for
the decommissioning.
Seidu said that there would be
very minimal environmental
impact as the satellite was small
and most of it would have
burnt out in orbit before it re-
enters the earth.
It will be recalled that on Sept.
27, 2003, Nigeria become the
third African country to have a
presence in space after South
Africa and Algeria with the
launch of NigeriaSat-1.
He said though the satellite was
built to last for not more than
five years, ``as we speak, that
satellite has lasted for about
eight years''.
“The engineers at the space
agency here have started
decommissioning the
NigeriaSat-1; it has come to the
end of its life after eight
years,” he said. “It’s a
successful mission, it is a
mission we are very proud of;
we expect that it would take
about 40 years to re-enter the
earth.
“We have also finished the
commissioning and testing of
NigeriaSat-2 and NigeriaSat-X,
final handing over would be
done in a few days and we can
start commercial operations.
Seidu displayed a number of
images taken by the satellite,
stressing that the rumours that
the satellite and its ground
stations were not functional
were completely untrue.
He identified cloud covers as a
major challenge facing the
capturing of images at a
particular time and pleaded
with people who did not
understand the way a satellite
worked, not to feed on
rumours.
He said that the NigeriaSat-1
during its time was used to get
satellite mapping of Nigeria,
mapping for the new railway
project and used to produce the
first satellite atlas in Africa.
Seidu, who decried the
agency’s current financial
status as the most poorly
funded among its
contemporaries globally, said
Nigeria would be saved over
two billion dollars on high
resolution imagery annually by
NigeriaSat-2 and NigeriaSat-X.
He said that NASRDA was
currently proposing a policy to
the National Assembly which
would compel companies
within Nigeria to first patronise
Nigerian space technologies and
only look outside when the
technology was not in Nigeria.
“Our goal is to develop, build
and launch satellites locally and
by 2030, we would be a
country of choice in the area of
satellite technology,” he said.
“We also need to have backup
satellites for earth observation
and for communication.
Meanwhile, NASRDA in response
to the security challenges in the
country is to train military and
paramilitary agencies on the
use of satellite data for security
and traffic control.
The training, according to the
DG, will commence shortly after
all arrangements had been
concluded by the relevant
agencies.[/b]

Apart from Badr4/6 and Nilesat 101/201, where can one catch Fox Movies and Series? I knew of a satellite that does that but can't place it for now. Any one able to help out?

Thanks for your question.
I am using a 90cm dish and am able to track both Yahsat 1A- 52.5E & NSS12- 57E on the same dish.
Like one author put it, you can get Fox middle East and Fox series on Yahsat 1A. By the way I reside in
Kampala, Uganda.

Thank you very much my v. good friend. Given that you could pin down Yahsat1A in Uganda with 90cm, I guess us fta hobbyists in west and central africa have to make do with atleast 2.4m. That not withstanding I'll give it a crack 'cos I've seen someone who hit the fox movies and series tp on badr 4/6 i.e 18843V27500 with a 90cm dish and atleast this has given me hope tha I too can. I hope I succeed on Monday.
