The center-left in Israel is more open to the U.S. Democrats' approach of supporting the revitalization of the Palestinian Authority and supporting Fatah to counter Hamas. Netanyahu’s plan, in contrast, requires the direct countering of Iranian-backed militancy within Palestinian territories, the establishment of a Middle Eastern coalition to engage in deep institutional reforms, and confronting Hezbollah in the north. This strategy of containing Iran’s proxy architecture and restoring security to the region is politically costly and risks regional conflagration in the U.S.’s assessment, complicating its Asia pivot. In that much, the double-bind is not only Netanyahu’s. For ISRAEL , on the one hand, the current U.S. strategy for deconflicting the region carries significant tail-end risks. The track record of U.S.-Middle Eastern coalitions does not inspire confidence. The 2004 Bush letter of commitment to Israel was followed by a complete failure that led to Hamas’ immediate takeover of Gaza. The 2015 U.S. back Saudi-UAE coalition against the Houthis has also been thwarted. Moreover, not only does Israel have to cede operational freedom but also any part in the reconciliation process. If taken out of the IDF’s hands Israel loses control over this key post-war process with the potential for absorption and reintegration of militants into new governance. If Israel plays along with this strategy it risks being left an Iranian-proxy hybrid-state like Lebanon/Hezbollah and Yemen/Houthis, with Axis of Resistance Palestinian militancy operating within a quasi-state Palestine. On the other hand, without the U.S. support and without political will within Israel, what exactly can be reasonably expected from Netanyahu’s administration? Between the threats to support (or abstain from vetoing) Security Council resolutions that could damage Israel, and halt munition supplies, Netanyahu’s government is threading a very fine needle. All between an historic hostage crisis, hundreds of thousands of internally displaced citizens, a stalling economy, while steering a terrorized public that is vulnerable to seizing what could be short-term security over Israel’s existential strategic needs. Bottom line for those who support re-establishing deterrence, is the discussion for Israel seems best framed in terms of the criticality of internal cohesion, and unified diplomatic efforts to address U.S. strategy in the region. There does not appear to be an alternative coalition that will fair better in this power struggle. A united diplomatic front and bi-partisan foreign policy is ISRAEL'S best shot. A nuclear-threshold Iran with a robust proxy architecture is a non-permissive environment for IMEC, which is a vital strategic interest for Europe’s energy independence and for North America’s reduced reliance on Chinese exports among other significant considerations. Moreover, as southeast Asia partners have been warning since at least 2020, the U.S.’s waning footprint in the Middle East threatens vital energy exports to the region. The PM will make ISRAEL’s case before the US congress soon. For my own part, I think this is a critical time to put political parties aside and rally to our flags (Dan Linnaeus on X) |

Exactly 57 years ago today - Operation Moked which started the Six Day War. About 200 ISRAELI Air Force planes took off one after the other, and destroyed about 70% of the air forces of Syria, Egypt, Jordan and Iraq. After long days in which the sword was hanging over its neck, ISRAEL realized that there was no choice and embarked on the daring operation. What was true then is very true today.

The headline of the Egyptian "Almsaa'" newspaper today 57 years ago - the first day of the Six Day War: "The Arab army is on its way to Tel Aviv..." In the headline of another newspaper a map was attached showing how the Arab forces are crowning the State of Israel... Even then, as today, the Arab media sold their followers fabric stories about false victories. We all know how the Six Day War started and how it ended. What has changed since then are the traditional Israeli media which, instead of praising the achievements of the soldiers in battles (and there are many of them), consistently and continuously try to suppress the spirit of the people and explain that ISRAEL is losing.
