its a bad idea because doing that will close opportunity for those who really want to go study. Also, working would be next to impossible. Your family would have to support you for a long time before you can possibly get your papers straight

you really don't want to do that, you will be totally useless in the US, will not be able to work or school, as u have no social security number, worst is you stand the risk of being deported once discovered. a law has been passed in the US that empower law enforcement to stop you at any any point in time and request to see your i.d. trust me bro, being in the US without proper documentation is not something you want to do

Phy, i did but the asked me to bring a letter in 6months from Road safety to show my driving records.
Uberino, I presented my naija's driver's license and was asked to take a written test, after which i did my behind the wheel. However, i don't know if the procedure is different in your state. You may try another DMV location, some may just be too strict.

My question to you is: what was wrong with doxa's advice to the poster?

All you can come up with is. . . do marriage for paper, what chance does he stand legally in US with student visa but not going to school? That is the issue here.

the Mexicans u talk about do mostly electrical or building jobs, you get paid under the table, and on a DAILY basic dey are being arrested and deported to their country, at the moment, the cost of building and farming has risen in the us, simple because of that, they Mexicans were cheap labor but immigration laws are strict now. about getting married, trust me, its not as easy as it sounds, let me give u a quick run-down:
you come in with a student visa and do not school, you are automatically an illegal immigrant, stays on your record for life, when you get the girl to marry you, you will have to return to Nigeria, your interview will be in Nigeria since you violated ur visa agreement thurs voiding it, and chances are HIGH you will be denned cos you have a messed up record. besides getting married is really easier said, i knw a lot of people here, no papers and havn't got someone to marry them in years, besides its not free, will cost you at least 7000 dolls

ok so this is not to insult you but your post is so ignorant.

Yes there are people who get their papers after being in the country illegally but that B.S of 5 years stay = green card is long gone. Doxat is giving you real life scenario of whats going on in the country now. Imagine this, in Arizona for example they passed a law that gives police the right to basically harass you for your papers and send you to an immigration center if you can't prove that you have your documents. The Mexicans and Haitians who are surviving are doing so because their communities look out for each other. They connect each other with under the table jobs etc. How many Nigerians do you know that would actually let you come stay at their home even if you have a greencard?

Under taking a tough fight such as what the originally poster had suggested can be successful, but the chances of that is slim nowadays. Immigration laws has changed a lot and they are not b.s'ing anymore. All the advice might sound like people wanting to stop another man's progress but trust me it's not. People need to just listen to what can happen to them and use that to plan accordingly

you really do not need to get person about this issue, you really are not displaying maturity, if you have a different view from me, make it known. Resulting to name calling is very unethical. The initial poster asked for public opinions, please respect mine. I’m a realist

Please, don't use just a single experience to justify others. I know so many guys on Nairaland, that have scale thru this. Unless your Visa is expired. But, in as much your visa is still intact, you have 98% assurance of getting the green-card.

Nobody is perfect, and all fingers are not equal, if you have relatives or guardians paying your bills, give thanks to them bcus its not easy studying and spoon feeding yourself as an international student. The only advice ima give to those pple coming is to go to school and register, attend the school for sometime, but on the long run, if you nor fit feel the parol again. . . use your second plan/

Like Omega said. Nigerians here are not ready to help even though you have green card. I'm a witness to this. The thing is, if you are coming, just make sure you have some money with you in-case things go wrong. No Padi for USA.

Though, it's getting hard this days. but My way fit no be your way. I talk my own grin

Is like asking about Ibadan to Lagos . . . New jersey and new york are neighboring cities.

So, if u love and adore new york. . . You have to love new jersey and the white there are not that racist.

so don't bother about the ratio of black to white. embarassed

New jersey is a big state and it really depends on the area you are going to stay.

Some parts of Jersey are close to NYC like hoboken, Newark, Seacacus, etc. New Jersey is a well intergrated state where you would find a lot of different ethnic groups and their education is one of the best in the country. Crime rate is pretty high in some areas but they have a very good governor and a great mayor for newark who is fighting the crimes hard.

Places to see in jersey: atlantic city which is where they film the jersey shore tv show and there are lots of hotels and casinos there. There is a six flaggs amusment park in Jersey too and also a safari just top list a few things.

I dont know much about cost of living in jersey but it's relatively cheaper than New york.

I really can't imagine someone leaving its home and going far away as 4000 miles overseas and not planning on what to do , as for me I got a scholarship from my school and will be settling the amount due for the first semester , but after dat I tink I will have to get myself up to settle for d amount dued for the second semester , they gave me a work program scholarship too for 1600 so can use dat for books . . Nice say bro I hope we can get in touch when I finally touch Base in VA .

Re: Life In The Usa As A Student. by charisel(m): 12:49am On May 12, 2012
Haribo: Some of these may have been mentioned already, but I'll reiterate just in case.

- Apply for a research assistantship position if you're looking for a job, instead of your regular resident assistant or other forms of campus employment. This will help you get to know your faculty better (recommendation letters will be a breeze). If you're good enough, you might get published (good for resume & future opportunites). The pay is usually WAAAYYY better than the minimum wage you'll earn on other jobs (at least in my experience), and if you're good you may get a free ride for your masters/PhD.

- Participate in extracurricular activities. Volunteer, participate in your international student group, pick up a sport, DO SOMETHING OTHER THAN STUDY. The memories and connections you'll gain from these activities will last you way past graduation. Also, try to be a leader in an organization. The exposure you'll get from this will be awesome for your resume & future opportunities.

- Participate in a study abroad or exchange program. This is my one and only 'regret' in my whole college experience. It can only do you good, plus it's your opportunity to meet people and study in a different area smiley

- Don't forget to date!! Guys & gals, college will be the one time in your life where you are exposed to a huge pool of potential partners. I'm not saying you must find a husband/wife or something, but don't be too focused on studies to ignore your romantic education wink You may not get married to someone you meet in college, but at least you'll have some knowledge of what you want/don't want in a relationship. This is very important. I know some folks that were too 'serious' for dating back in college, and  to tell you that they regret it now would be an understatement.

- Get at least ONE summer internship. This is very important. Don't waste your summer doing nothing, or going home to sit in your parents house and eat eba all summer long. Get a JOB! When you graduate and start your job search, this experience will set you apart from your peers.

- Live off campus after your 1st semester. It's cheaper and your home cooked food will always taste better than the crap they feed you on campus. If you don't know how to cook then I don't know what to say, it must suck to be you though wink

- Take one or both of these classes (in whatever form your school offers them): (1) Religions of the World and (2) Human S*xuality. Trust me ignorance is NOT bliss. You need to educate yourself on the reality of life, acting like certain things don't exist won't make them go away.  Free your mind and the rest will follow! Shebi they sent you to school to learn,

- Live within your means. I know some Naija people like to spend $$ like there's no tomorrow, so they can post their nice pics on fb and make everyone see how they're living it up in the US. Don't get caught up with trying to impress people. No. one. cares. And if you need to spend money you don't have in order to make friends, then maybe you should just be by yourself. Commonsense I know, but I've seen to many people mess up big time trying to impress others. Its not worth it.

- Oh and one very important thing, make sure you stay on the good side of the staff of the international office. Don't mess with them. They are the ones that will tell you how to go about getting your SSN, OPT, CPT, and whatever other acronymns the govt. decides to throw your way. They are also good for tips on scholarships if needed.

I could say a lot more, but I think this is a good addition to what's already been said. Good luck!

Wow! Well said. Thank you very much.
Re: Life In The Usa As A Student. by charisel(m): 1:00am On May 12, 2012
ekwah:    well for me I learnt through the hard way. I am a college Freshman and have no relatives here in the US apart from the ones at home (Naija). I got a mouth-watering scholarship from my school but did not manage it well. First, I got a single which was $350 above my school's calculated average for housing (didn't know before hand that it was that expensive) and did not complete all the pre-departure medical requirements from home ( I paid dearly for this mistake!). I had to get a loan sad to pay off the total extra charges that accrued. My scholarship also covers the costs of feeding during the semester, but I work (15-18hrs) every week to raise enough money to cover the cost of books (not covered by the scholarship) and also help my family back home ( I be/was (a)  kpako guy cheesy).
Now, I have moved to a triple, to drastically cut the housing cost, I  just opted out of my school's meal plan (very expensive angry ) since I can cook. I still use a laptop loaned from my school since I can't buy one yet. No hipster lifestyle for me o, every kobo sorry I mean cents grin means a lot to me. I basically starved as I didn't plan well for the winter break, but got help from fellow Nigerians  cool here.  I am doing pretty good now, my semester begins tomorrow and ends in May. I am kinda happy because I will get enough change from the scholarship and do hope to get a laptop from that. I also have to begin saving in prep for summer housing since I can't go home. I just love the fact that I am struggling to survive here on my own. Getting  to this place and managing well has not been easy, but I will say a luta continua!! cool cool

May God strengthen you, and bring you favor from every side

Hello everyone, pls I need ur advice about this. My brother is an Insurance graduate and has been working for over 7 years now in an insurance company in Lagos. He has married with 2 kids and living in rented apartment in Lagos. He has two Sa visa on his e-passport and he has visited twice. He wants to study his post graduate in either US or Canada, but he is confused of where is the best to study it. Secondly, which school do u think they offer cheap post graduate in insurance? And must he pay the full tuition before he can be given visa? Does it necessary to apply with his family or he should apply alone? Someone said it is not compulsory for him to pay any tuition fee in US but only registration fee and can be granted visa, how true is this?
If at all he apply to any school for post graduate course, he is 37 years old, can he be sponsored by individual at his age because he is 37 years old. Or he must be sponsored at work? And like how much must the sponsor have in the account?
