Can government officials also ban foreign mobile phones, especially BB and iPhone, and go for Tecno? grin

Another wrong move by GEJ. Let's see how it's will turn out. But really productivity in the civi service is below average, so Nigerian I.T. Products should be ok. Our decision makers are dead upstairs. Shame on them all

1) They are not banning the importation and sale of foreign made computers, they are only banning the procurement and use of foreign made computers in public (government) owned institutions, eg public schools.

2) Business savvy Nigerians will approach HP and other computer manufacturers to set up "assembly plants" in Nigeria. These business savvy Nigerians will be agents of foreign computer makers.

PeterKbaba:

Brother, its a very complimentary move.. The nation is tearing apart, job needs to be created or there will be a revolution in 2015 that could devour ( swallow ) all the corrupt leaders in the past and present. You most have noticed that all Nigerians are waiting anxiously to know their faith as a nation come 2015. One thing I know is certain come 2015 that will change Nigeria for good. It's either we breakup (good) or we elect the best candidate to clean up the mess that started 51 years ago ( also good ).

But naija go change 2015
i agree with u and i didnt say its a wrong move if u read my post very well.. I only said the timing is wrong... We dnt have good ict companies to serve nigerians...

Lets use cement as an example despite the fact that we have indigenous cement factories.. Imagine how much nigerians are buying cements today.. Atleast b4 d ban on cement importation, cement are not this expensive... And after the ban, does it increase the number of cement companies we have?...

I remember there was a time rice importation was banned... Do u remember how locally produced rice price skyrocketed despite the fact that the rice is sub-standard(half rice half stone)

can federal government totally ban importation of toyota and honda in nigeria despite the fact that they have large market here and they are yet to build automobile plant here...

The best thing any reasonable government can do is create enabling enviroment first...for investors and companies to come in... All this un-neccessary ban wnt force them to come instead it will only leave nigerians to suffer more in the hands of our local substandard products... South africa didnt invite investors like that.. (If u watch invictus.. Mandela used ordinary rugby world cup to invite sum investors) buh our own leaders are stupiid and clueless trying to do things in a trickish way so they can get return later...

Which investor will come to nigeria with d high level of insecurity and corruption? Even ordinary eletricity (most important aspect of any investment) we dnt have. Buh we want d investor to come anyhow and the stupiid govt will later kill them with multiple taxation...Lets just face reality bro

You guys must have missed the part in the report that stated that the ban is specifically for PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS aka Government institutions
then why cant they ban toyota suvs used by our legislooters and go for innoson huh?

Dnt u tink it will be a right move?

But, FG/NITDA should realize the need to create an enabling environment for local manufacturers first, b/4 the enforcement of this costly restriction. Presently, nothing is there to sustain an indigenous IT enterprenure. Incessant hike in fuel price, imminent increase in electricity tariff, insecurity (Boko Haram, Buglers & Bandit), Poor road network, Inflation, institutionalized fraud and et al. Think twice Mr Angaye.

They want to ban procurement of branded laptops and PCs and still roll in imported exquisite cars.
SMH seriously embarassed

I couldn't help spoting the note of contradiction in your comment. If you agree that productivity in the civil service is low and hence they get your endorsement for made-in-Nigeria PC, then why in the same breath did you castigate the decision-makers?

This useless president, and all the people waking up and producing these nonsense and corrupt policies have created hard ship in Nigeria. This is the worse regime i have never seen.

This will bring up the cost or price of computers now.common man cannot afford for a computer set now.

Can't you all just calm down and re-read the post. The ban only applies to public institutions and not individuals and private institutions. For example, a govt secretariat can't purchase H.P. Computers for their offices, but someone working there can still purchase one for his own personal use. You can also stock your classrooms with foreign computers if you own a private school. Get it?

lagerwhenindoubt: Great news - now CHINA can roll-in millions of dirt-cheap Chinese parts and accessories that our Alaba and Ariaria brothers can couple and sell to large organisations every other 3 weeks because they are designed to fail every other three weeks. the Zinox Komputa had to be rebooted so many times to get the Opensource OS to recognize finger-prints alone - the face na anotehr matter altogether.

I think they should take it a step further and Ban Microsoft, Oracle and IBM Application/Software platforms so that Otigba can release their latest Ijebu-based MAC-OSX-WIndows-8 Hybrid OS to the market..

i support ooooo! why use foreign software on local pc? doesn't make sense. so they should just ban all foriegn software on govt (sic) pc! grin wink

Nigerian made laptops are simply not in the class of foreign-made products. The government is being penny wise & pound foolish.

great move by the govt. for those who are saying this is a bad policy & that our local IT companies cannot meet demands, it's quite obvious that non of them read the body of the news, they just read headlines & rush off to make unfounded comments, exposing their ignorance.

the article says foreign computers & accessories have been banned for govt-owned institutions. if you can't understand that, then i'm sorry for you.

Some people are so quick to comment without reading, The FG has a right to decide who to buy from or is it by force?

Zinox, Omatek and other are only using FoxCom board to ouple their systems. Some of their systems are not better than those cloned at the Ikeja Computer Village or Zone 3 Computer Plaza in Abuja. Moreover their after sales support is very very poor

Let's hope the Nigerian IT market can handle just the public institutions. And let me assume it's a test of their capacity to deliver. If they fail, let's just send them to the abysmal beyond.

Re: FG Enforces Ban On Foreign Computers: HP, LG & Samsung To Lose by OkijaPriest: 9:14pm On May 16, 2012
Just when you think this country couldnt get any worse, they go and do something this stupid..

How is this progressive?!

Zinox and Omatek with their outdated technology..

I cant blame the leaders, they dont come from the computer age. When you say computer, they prolly cant think beyond microsoft word and excel.

I will not use a made in Nigeria Computer.

I will not use an assembled in Nigeria vehicle.

Its not that I am unpatriotic, but I want the best. If its the best, best believe I will spend my money on it. E.g... Made in Nigeria electric wires.. THE BEST.. Foreign wires are suffering.. Why would the government do such a foolish thing.. All we just did was increase chinas import of computer parts into nigeria.. Zinox is a computer assembly plant not manufacturing..

I hate this country... We elect fools that are still caught in the 60's and expect them to bring us development of the new age.. HOW!!?

Who here has watched the National assembly sitting and seem these senators trying to use an ipad?! \
