Inferiority complex is the major problem of Nigerians. What is wrong in taking hard line to foster growth and demand for local products. What does Dell, Asus, acer etc do differently from Zinox This same approach has been taken by several governments from across the world. Now Nigeria has done it and Nigerians are complaining. What else could please Nigerians ? Go to Japan/South Korea and look for Benz, Volvo, renault,Audi etc, then u would amswer for ur self. |

This is another smart move by Government, it's time to reduce unemployment, encourage local producers, and of course save foreign exchange. Way to go! |

Good product speaks for itself. No foreign government enforced people to be using android phones and Linux OS, despite the fact that they are Open source software. they should know how to compete globally and strategically market their product. Government didn't enforce people to register on nairaland because Seun did his assignment well. The total number of registered members can compete globally. even God didn't Enforce Himself on people! |

Whether Omatek n Zinox assemble, the laptops are still sh.it . People have defended the enforcing of this for govt institutions, we're talking of cutting costs etc, how much good does it do, wen theyr more broken down laptops than functioning ones? What is their support like? Why shud u pay more for less? WHY? |

The power sector is crying for sth like this, I'm def not talking of made in nigerian generators. Generators ought to be banned, so wen big man no get light for house, they'll work on the power sector *wishful thinking* . Well sum1 talked of finding volvo in Japan, Toyota is a worldwide automaker, a renowed one @ dat, I don't think other car brands are banned der, if those cars have factories there my guess is people r gonna drive em if they choose. That's beside the point anyways, the idea is good, but def not meant for the Computing Sector. |

I fink it goes beyond formulating policies to implementing them. I hardly see Nigeria having the stamina to do so. I'm not saying there are no capable local producers of PC because "Zinox" have proven beyond reasonable doubts that they are good at it(for those who know about the company) |

What I would like to know is what they intend to do with the old laptops? I hope they won't be given out to their cronnies then new ones will be bought in line with the policy? As usual this is just a way for some people to stylishly embezzel! |

I'm not saying there are no capable local producers of PC because "Zinox" have proven beyond reasonable doubts that they are good at it(for those who know about the company) Even if poorly implemented, it will give Zinox and others some breathing room. Instead of cutting costs to build cheap computers, they can put in some R& and sell at a fair price. I dont see how this is not a win for Nigerians |

The governments attitude to banning is really gonna cause more harn than good in the long run.... What we will end up having are Nigerian 'manufacturing/productio' companies that are shielded from economic challenges thus making them complacent and impeding their growth and drive to improve... I wonder what GLO would have been like if they didn't have MTN, Etisalat and other foreign competition in the market... In computing, the same thing should have been employed... Zinox and other Nigerian IT firms should be left to compete for a stance in the market.. America didn't ban foreign softwares and hardwares just so Windows and Apple could grow, but look at them today.. They explored the market and tweaked their product to have an edge.. Same for HP and co... They ban computers but there is a Nigerian made Tablet that is out there and I don't see them banning Ipads and other foreign Tablets... This is a policy that causes more harm than good.. When we sheild local companies from reality, they get comfortable in mediocrity.. |

why the stress on educational institutions? why not enforce the replacement of all computers in the national assemblies and state houses with made in Nigeria systems, that will be a genuine way to kick off the campaign. i hope Anganye is not welding his powers just because he has some gains to make. its a good move, especially where multinational companies are to establish assembly plants in the country, but the govt should be sincere with this. |

Bontee: It is for government institutions and not private or personal oooo. They are not banning the importation of these items into the country but their deployment in public institutions. Hahahahaha , I don't know why people are panicking like rabbits in a dog race. This move is not so bad, considering that very few govt agencies actually have need for computers beyond the 'Word applications activities. Zinox should do just fine, besides the bloody thing (Zinox) is immortal! It just can't die. Software wise, its not fantastic but the hardware makes it seem like Robocop birthed it! |

JUO: good news, let them do this to cars YIE? , No reason am oh. Except u mean only GOVT agencies should drive Innoson then I'm all for it. After all in yankee elected officials have ONLY local brands as official vehicles. |

Re: FG Enforces Ban On Foreign Computers: HP, LG & Samsung To Lose by RuuDie(m): 12:28pm On May 17, 2012 |
To the best of my knowledge; for the now, Nigeria and Nigerians are losing big. Indigenous suppliers/contractors cannot bring in the HP, IBM, Toshiba to their partner companies here and there are no local alternatives that meet the standard/requirements of most companies' operating environment (note: I am talking big, large-scale establishments here). That's a couple of folks shorn off their means of livelihood and some organizations somewhat stuck in a rut with respect to their I.T needs. Furthermore, because there is no importation; a source of revenue is blocked or shut off for now (not that we ever see the monies anyway) until the whole "Nigerian Content" thing is properly reviewed and correctly implemented. |
Re: FG Enforces Ban On Foreign Computers: HP, LG & Samsung To Lose by luciano80(m): 1:33pm On May 17, 2012 |
this move will not do any good. its not like we manufacture any PC or parts from scratch to deem the hps and compaq a threat. i agree with a previous poster- make 9ja a manufacturing hub. one thing i know in 9ja- "BANNED" items only fuels the want....nothing more |

amosy007: Though the policy is right buh this is not the best time for that kinda move.. Just Another stupiid quick move by the govt.. Do we have enough ICT companies to engage in such ban... Even zinox still sucks... I wonder what dis people are thinking *smh* You do know the ban is focused only at public/govt institutions/organisations, not private individuals, right? So how's the policy and its timing not good? |
