I must say that some of you fellow Nigerians really baffle me. The govt just pushed a policy that will favour our local ICT industry, and you guys complain? Wow....just wow.. Oh btw, the policy is focused at govt institutions, not private individuals. So don't worry about not being able to purchase your HPs/Dells/Compaqs and co. |

yemmy_ma: ed!ots, You made sense bro. Nigeria is known to clone and brand computers. It should be made compulsory (as an option) with enabling environment and supports for these companies to manufacture and assemble their brands here in Nigeria, thereby creatiing jobs. Outright band of these brands from the nigerian market is not last straw. It is high time the govt became creative. This is 21 century |

Bad move. The price of computers will sky rocket. The local manufactures cannot meet Nigerians demand. |

Apologies before i start, but this is further evidence of what i've always stated. Which is Nigeria is largely led by lunatics and a large percentage of Nigerians are not far of from lunacy in it's self. I don't know the depth of the poster's grasp of Economics and Macro-economic market fundamentals but here are some lay terms you all know; 1:Anti-competitiveness. 2:Market Forces. 3:Consumer choice. 4:Open Market. 5:Democracy. 6:Authoritarianism. Only in my beloved country can a mad man like Angaye come and say things like this and people applaud him. Like seriously shey una no dey go school for Nigeria again? Let me quote the clown Angaye further added, “To benefit from this policy, multinational companies are invited to set up production or assembly plants in Nigeria". Q: Where is the platform of infrastructure investment for the multinationals to do this? Power,Security,Favorable industrial policies to attract foreign firms,Tax incentives Is this man not mad? On one hand he wants to ban the products of foreign companies,on the other hand he say's they should come and set up production plants?? Am i the only one seeing this paradox Angaye “Use of non made-in-Nigeria computers in public schools at all levels. NITDA will seek the collaboration of the Federal Ministry of Education to ensure that the accreditation of schools and renewal of accreditation will depend partly on the establishment of Information Technology labs equipped with locally manufactured IT products”, Angaye concluded. Q: Another crazy comment,so he is advocating principles of common sense and academic excellence be eschewed is schools in favor of who buys the most local products. Chai ...Gooooooood!!!!!!! Angaye further declared that the procurement by public institutions, of non made-in-Nigeria computers, where certified local brands exist, would be an offence punishable by a prison term and fine, under the NITDA Act. Q:Is this no longer a democracy? If any of you mumus(sorry) on Nairaland was responsible for procurement in a company how would you go about it? It ain't a trick question so here's a hint. Your budget, what your require the goods to deliver, capoacity of said goods to deliver, and most importantly you pick the most cost effective solution. You don't go and buy local because some idiot politician who doesn't know his left from right said so!!!! If your local goods and service are efficient, cost effective and reliable then you don't need to enact draconian, police state laws to see them sell. What worries me is most Nairalanders are young and should have more sense that the retards of the earlier generation who i hold in utter contempt for wrecking this great country!!!! |

"Nigeria is loosing revenue from massive theft of crude oil in the Niger Delta" Simple problems that require simple solutions, yet, nothing is done. Nigeria imports "tooth prick" , "bottled pure water/gutter" , and u want to ban OEM computer systems. It hurts to read all these. |
ed!ots, just make Nigeria a manufacturing hub for these companies for instance to serve the African region. Provide infrastructure and a good investment atmosphere. That way, the technologies will be diffused into Nigerians naturally and they will pick things up from there. Where does this govt get advise?
i wonder where in the hell they get advise from.this is just being daft, well very soon pc's wikl join the list of smuggled items, thanks to a bunch of retardeens. |

What I ve observed here is just some dullard Nigerians echoing the nonsense of others even though it is clear most of them did not read the article well. The ban is on public institution's procurement of foreign based laptops and peripherals. This is a well thought out plan that will help the local manufacturers grow both in capacity and quality. And those of you screaming zinox and omatek obviously have not used them or even seen how one looks like. Instead of you lot screaming about what you do not know and understand, it is better to keep shut and observe, that is how to learn. It is useless criticizing something you do not understand. Fact is, most of these foreign companies just like zinox and omatek, do thesame thing, they source their parts from different companies mostly in China, yes, almighty China. Most of them moved their manufacturing plants to china when it became clear to them that they will have to be in china to compete with over a hundred different chinese brands of thesame products. If you say Naija should wait until they can compete favourably with foreign brands without any intervention from government that will never happen even if we fix our infrastructure. People should learn to criticize constructively and strategically. Enough of these defitist slave mentality....china is an economic powerhouse today not because of her strong brands or quality products. Infact, China thrives on quantity, flooding the market with cheap affordable alternatives with reasonable quality and prospects of improving on the quality of their products. Ask most of these big brand names, they are not that popular in china even with the billions they spend on ads and moving their manufacturing plants to china. In chinese market, no matter how strong and cool the the quality of foreign products, they will never beat the locally made chinese alternatives from outside through sales outlet and mere ads. Most of the times, the foreign brands do a hostile take over of local competitors or go into a joint partnership with them to compete favourably. Most of what has become Chinese brands today, started out like that, their government gave them huge advantage over foreign brands even with their mediocre qualities. They dominated the local economy, improved on their quality with time sometimes even going into partnership with their foreign counter part and secretly stealing technical know-how and making little change to patented designs of their foreign partners after the joint venture ends. That is how to grow an economy, you think of yourself first whether your brand is world class or not, not the nonsense most of you are spewing here without using your head and considering the expansion of local capacity that such policy will bring. Nigerians like to reckon with foreign made products just so they can look big and posh not neccessarily cos of quality as many here wont even know a quality PC if they see it. |

rhymz: you are an ignoramus parading as an intellectual. You know nothing about what blabbing about. You are the ignoramus, since you and your ilk have neither foresight nor wisdom. If you had any shred of common sense you would condemn the drivel being spewwed in the article. I would have tried explaining the finer points but you clearly lack the brain power and i the time!! So good luck with your stupidity, i only have to see retards like you once a year on holidays and thank God for that, hopeless cretins!!! |
