Bear With Us; FG Appeals To Students, Parents Over ASUU Strike

on August 1, 2013

The Federal Government has appealed to students over the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities saying that it is committed to the speedy resolution of the crisis for the sake of Nigerian students.

Speaking to State House correspondents after Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting, Minister of Information, Labaran Maku said the government was committed to “serious negotiations” with the university lecturers.

He therefore appealed to the students and parents to bear with government and show more understanding as efforts are being made to find a lasting solution to the problem at hand.

“The federal government has been far more worried than you think concerning the strike in tertiary institutions, because of the disruption of the school calendar and so government is concerned and very worried and since the onset of the strike government has been negotiating with ASUU through the Ministry of Labour and Productivity and the Ministry of Education.

“As at today we know that this negotiations are going on and it is our expectation that this strike will not get more protracted and that an understanding will be reached soon enough to enable our students return back to school. Government is very worried and concerned every time the school calendar is disrupted, it has its cost to the nation, particularly the idle time our children spend at home can lead to a lot of social difficulties.

“We don’t want school calendars to be disrupted and a lot of series of discussions have been going on and we believe we should record some progress soon enough for these schools to open and the Minister of Labour and education will be giving quarter briefing on the progress of these negotiation and I know that it has never cease.

“So we are appealing to our people particularly parents and children of this nation to bear with us, to show more understanding and we pray that this type of strike will not re-occur, because the public school system suffers a lot of damage with the perennial strikes. The universities have been relatively stable since the advent of this Administration. The outraged strikes that we inherited we have tried to resolve them, and if you notice in the last two years there has not been a lot of strikes until this unfortunate one and I believe we will overcome it and in the end both parties will appreciate the need to keep the school calendar stable for the progress of our country. So government is working hard to ensure we reach an agreement to resolve this problem so that or schools can re-open” he said.

ASUU strike: FG assures of speedy resolution

Our Reporter

From JULIANA TAIWO-OBALONYE, Abuja

The Federal Government has admitted its concern about the distortion in the school calendar, assuring on the speedy resolution to end the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The government said it has engaged the lecturers in ‘serious negotiations’.

It is also worried about the fall-out of the lingering strike and its effect on the students, hence, the urgency to end the industrial action as quickly as possible.

Minister of Information Labaran Maku stated the government’s resolve at the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja yesterday, urging parents and the affected students to bear with government and show more understanding as efforts are being made to resolve the issues very soon.

Maku said the Federal Government had indeed been worried since the onset of the strike, particularly as there are always social costs incurred by disruption of academic calendar.

“The Federal Government has been far more worried than you think, concerning the strike in tertiary institutions, because of the disruption of the school calendar and so, government is concerned and very worried and since the onset of the strike, government has been negotiating with ASUU through the Ministries of Labour and Productivity and Education.

“As at today, we know that negotiations are going on and it is our expectation that this strike will not get more protracted and that an understanding will be reached soon enough to enable our students return to school. Government is very worried and concerned every time the school calendar is disrupted, it has its cost to the nation, particularly the idle time our children spend at home can lead to a lot of social difficulties.

“We don’t want school calendars to be disrupted and a lot of series of discussions have been going on and we believe we should record some progress soon enough for these schools to re-open and the Ministers of Labour and Education will be giving briefings on the progress of these negotiations and I know that it has never ceased.

“So, we are appealing to our people, particularly parents and children of this nation, to bear with us, to show more understanding and we pray that this type of strike will not re-occur, because the public school system suffers a lot of damage with the perennial strikes. The universities have been relatively stable since the advent of this administration. The strikes that we inherited, we have tried to resolve them, and if you notice in the last two years, there has not been a lot of strikes until this unfortunate one and I believe we will overcome it and in the end, both parties will appreciate the need to keep the school calendar stable for the progress of our country. So, government is working hard to ensure we reach an agreement to resolve this problem, so that our schools can re-open”.

Meanwhile, FEC has approved a contract of N2.99 billion for the rehabilitation/construction of the Calabar-Ugep section of the Katsina-Ala/Ogoja/Ugep/Calabar Road.

The earlier section of the road which is already 80 per cent complete, was awarded for N4.6 billion, thus bringing the total contract sum for the entire road to N7.5 billion

Minister of State for Works, Bashir Yuguda, explained that the contractor, Piccolo Brunelli, which handled the first phase, was asked to continue with the extension since it was already on site and had done a very good job.

Yuguda recalled that “the first phase of the project aimed at addressing the heavily distressed sections of the road while other sections not captured in the original contract scope of works would be addressed when funds became available.

“This is to ensure that government and the public get the full benefits of the investment made on the roads in terms of improvement of the level of service,” he siad.

The council also considered a memo to provide a template for economic analysis of projects before they are included in the budget for appropriation. According to Maku, this template will also include environmental assessment and will ensure that henceforth, projects must follow the masterplan of the Federal Government’s Transformation Agenda.

Although there is existing assessment, FEC intends the new template to constitute a scientific and thorough analysis of projects, and decided to continue further deliberations on the memo at subsequent meetings of the council.

A FEC committee was also set up to further study the synergy among several factors that come into play in the Public-Private-Partnership involved in power/electricity projects in the country.

Wittywizard: I weep for all the Nigerian
students begging for ASUU
to call off strike so that
they can finish school. After
school what? You graduate
from a system that cannot

Whatever the case is, ASUU will come back to classrooms, the FG or ASUU cannot truncate anyone's future. Both parties have no choice, they cannot keep us at home forever. it is still left to us to develop ourselves on our own if we want to succeed in life, ASUU or no FG! I HAVE FOLLOWED this problem for years and i know something is not right somewhere within both parties! This is the kind of post that takes away God and faith and hope from the hearts of men, instead, you should say positive things to encourage people in the face of this stand off! Please restrict your weeping, it is not for us! A man is fighting to cross a river of crocodiles and all you tell him is that wild animals will devour him even if he succeeds??!! We all are aware of the tense situation on ground but some of us have made a decision to stop complaining around and start maintaining determination. it is only us that can change things starting with ourselves. whether you like it or not, those who work, contribute and stay positive will rise above all this confusion and bring Nigeria pride and those who like to analyse without raising a muscle will fade into obscurity Please try to encourage people, you need to see what people post sad, no one will need to tell you that some are close to suicide, not everyone is strong that is why so many need words of strength; dont increase the depression index for our youths, we have a future by God's grace! angry undecided . All the same, great post, you are very articulate! smiley

@Nyles and @Wittywizard I pray both of you school/schooled in Uniabuja, because that would torpedo a lot of impression I have formed while following this thread ever since the OP opened it. The write-ups and grammar I have seen here are just terrible, the only time you get to see articulate grammar that makes sense on this thread is when a certain dude Mrpresido and Richiez (I guess) COPY AND PASTE newspaper publication (apart from the copy and paste, even these duo are nothing commendable), every other thing here are eyesores and it is betoken of the fact that Uniabuja is gliding down the ramp to hit rock-bottom when other schools are soaring. Our school can no longer lure bright minds to it, I must say that the applicants here do not give me any reason to cheer and this malignant problem plaguing uniabuja is not the fault of the Government, why is it that the best of best of applicants would rather fill in Unilag, OAU, UI, UNN, Unilorin and leave uniabuja with the least of applicants in all federal universities, that means that our lecturers are also to be blamed in the collapse of education structure here and nationwide, afterall, no Nigerian University is among the elite institutions in Africa, Government and ASUU together with its affiliates (NASU, SSANU) are to be blamed.
January 2012 when ASUU
was on one of their many
strikes, there was this joke
circulating on twitter that
between (ASUU), matchstick
and thunder, who strikes
more? Funny as it sounded, it
only brought humour to an
issue that should be looked
into by our lecturers with a
sombre introspection. ASUU
formed since 1978 are yet to
learn how to combat the
Govt. over its insouciance on
Nigeria's education, in its 35
years of existence, it is yet
to come out with measures
that speaks to the Govt. in
the language they
understand while leaving the
innocent Nigerian students in
schools and in classes
learning the art of life.
Funny how all their industrial
actions are centered on #
MONEY with every other
issues being relegated to the
back-burner. ASUU cannot
claim to have the interest of
the Nigerian students at
heart while they are directly
culpable in adding additional
years to their stint in school.
Even if ASUU were to speak
on the quality of education
and infrastructures available
in our ivory towers, they
consciously avoid mentioning
those far more important
issues in the same breath as
their #MONEY.
Come to think of it, it is not
as if they are not partners in
crime in the deplorable state
of our educational centres
today. Our truculent
erudites are ever willing to
down-tool, a practice that
has seemingly become an
annual event.
Who for God-sake will go on
strike over the poor
knowledge delivery from our
lecturers, it is not new that
harassment of female
students have become a
perennial practice in our
institutions, just last month, a
scapegoat was caught by the
horn in ABU, but these are
practices that occur
everyday in every Nigerian
University.
Who will strike on these crimes committed by ASUU members?
Or that handouts are still
being traded in our schools
and lecturers miss lectures
with impunity.
Who will strike on this?
They talk of salaries and
allowances and yet some are
(unfortunately) barely
qualified to lecture on the
courses they teach.
Back then when I was in
100L, I was lectured in
physics and chemistry as do
many of my colleagues, I can
bet that we could easily swap
position with our lecturers so
that they sit and listen while
we do the talking.
Annoyingly, our knowledge of
physics came entirely from
reading textbooks in that our small library in gwagwalada are not from
our strike-happy lecturers
who with due respect could
do with some lectures
themselves.
So the question still
surface for the umpteenth
time,
who will strike over all
these impropriety by ASUU members?
That being said, it is an
embarrassment that we have
a president who is suppose to
have passed through a
university, if this assertion
is true, it is inexcusable that
he treats education with
such levity. Words on the
street is that he was once a
lecturer,meaning that he too
would have, like his peers,
down-tool severally over this
perennial quagmire, then why
would he display this boorish
actions over legitimate
demands from our teachers?
Ofcourse an easy-to-bring
answer to this last question
is that our leaders have sent
out their wards outside the
shores of this country while
leaving our barely surviving
institutions to plunge into
decrepitude.
So the ultimate question still
remain unanswered,
Who suffers in these
frequent and incessant
strikes ASUU embark on?... #
The Nigerian students
ofcourse...
ThankGod its only ASUU
that is embarking on strike,
not the #INTERNET, that
means our main and primary
source of learning is still
working.
When next ASUU decides to
downtool, they should spare
us the long rhetoric and
state the obvious, their
strike centres on their
already tumescent pockets
not on our best interest. Let
us graduate in peace and in
time and leave our fight for
us to take.
If GEJ who was once a lecturer acts this way, it
brings into askance if your
reason(s) for striking is
internecine among ASUU
members, don't be surprise if the current ASUU chairman (Faggae) becomes a governor and personally see to the death of his state university. @Wittywizard, these people are not sincere jaare,
one thing still stands out as
TRUTH, the Govt officials
are overpaid...
ASUU are (supposedly/
controvertibly) underpaid, so
too is the Military, Police,
Teachers, Nurses etc, if all
these are to down-tool
annually as ASUU is incline
to, I wonder what will be of
our country.
This same ASUU were in
UniAbuja while
administrative incompetence
which led to horrendous
hardship of Medical, Vet and Engineering students
festered right under their
noses while they carried out
their ASUU meetings
unperturbed.
Sha! They should Keep it up!!!
Federal Govt and its
partners in crime (ASUU,
Police and co) are steadily
fanning the flame and Embers of
revolution in this country.

sakaguchi: The hitherto suspended courses at the
University of Abuja - Medicine, Veterinary
Medicine and Agriculture - have been granted
accreditation by the National Universities
Commission (NUC).
The university also received an approval to run
engineering courses.
The suspension and non-approval of the
courses had been one of the major causes of
the crises rocking the institution in recent
times.
The announcement was made by the Chairman
of the Task Team on the accreditation of the
College of Medicine and Visiting Professor to
NUC, Professor Eugene Okpere, after an
inspection of the needed facilities at the
university yesterday, where he added that
while Medical and Agriculture courses had full
accreditation, veterinary medicine had been
given interim accreditation. "All the courses
can, however, take off."
"We are happy to say that University of Abuja
is more than ready to run these courses and
the facilities we see here are even superior to
those in other teaching hospitals," he said.
The institution now has the capacity to run the
affected programmes.
Providing further explanation on the status of
the engineering programme, Okpere said it had
just been granted approval and could now
commence steps to seeking accreditation.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university,
Professor James Adelabu, while speaking with
journalists, said the management carried the
NUC along, while putting the necessary
facilities in place.
He added that this became necessary as the
issue of the non-accreditation of the
programmes entered national discourse.
On the fate of the engineering students
transferred to other schools to complete their
programmes, Adelabu said: "Those that have
not been accepted in those universities will
come back to University of Abuja and we can
see what courses they can fit into.
"The journey to get to where we are today has
not been easy, but we thank God that all is now
over," he said.

that they sit and listen while
we do the talking.
Annoyingly, our knowledge of
physics came entirely from
reading textbooks in that our small library in gwagwalada are not from
our strike-happy lecturers
who with due respect could
do with some lectures
themselves.
So the question still
surface for the umpteenth
time,
who will strike over all
these impropriety by ASUU members?
That being said, it is an
embarrassment that we have
a president who is suppose to
have passed through a
university, if this assertion
is true, it is inexcusable that
he treats education with
such levity. Words on the
street is that he was once a
lecturer,meaning that he too
would have, like his peers,
down-tool severally over this
perennial quagmire, then why
would he display this boorish
actions over legitimate
demands from our teachers?
Ofcourse an easy-to-bring
answer to this last question
is that our leaders have sent
out their wards outside the
shores of this country while
leaving our barely surviving
institutions to plunge into
decrepitude.
So the ultimate question still
remain unanswered,
Who suffers in these
frequent and incessant
strikes ASUU embark on?... #
The Nigerian students
ofcourse...
ThankGod its only ASUU
that is embarking on strike,
not the #INTERNET, that
means our main and primary
source of learning is still
working.
When next ASUU decides to
downtool, they should spare
us the long rhetoric and
state the obvious, their
strike centres on their
already tumescent pockets
not on our best interest. Let
us graduate in peace and in
time and leave our fight for
us to take.
If GEJ who was once a lecturer acts this way, it
brings into askance if your
reason(s) for striking is
internecine among ASUU
members, don't be surprise if the current ASUU chairman (Faggae) becomes a governor and personally see to the death of his state university. @Wittywizard, these people are not sincere jaare,
one thing still stands out as
TRUTH, the Govt officials
are overpaid...
ASUU are (supposedly/
controvertibly) underpaid, so
too is the Military, Police,
Teachers, Nurses etc, if all
these are to down-tool
annually as ASUU is incline
to, I wonder what will be of
our country.
This same ASUU were in
UniAbuja while
administrative incompetence
which led to horrendous
hardship of Medical, Vet and Engineering students
festered right under their
noses while they carried out
their ASUU meetings
unperturbed.
Sha! They should Keep it up!!!
Federal Govt and its
partners in crime (ASUU,
Police and co) are steadily
fanning the flame and Embers of
revolution in this country.
.......Emmanuel.

This is such good piece of writing! Well you are right in so many ways especially with the tumescence and insouciance going on. Do not judge all Abuja students too quickly although i have met a couple and i am not proud of them at all...I MEAN at all. I still believe that there are worthy students in this university even with the situation of things. Lets Just be a little optimistic in the midst of this nasty hurly-burly and keep developing ourselves in the process. As for ASUU, I do know that most of them are not sincere in their pursuits but there is nothing they can do to impede our future, THAT'S for certain.

Varsities have started pulling out of ASUU strike
which started in July 1, 2013.. FG/SCE gave a go
ahead today for uninterested Varsities to opt-out
of strike since ASUU is adamant in the
negotiations. FG begged ASUU National to slash
their 2009 demands to 3 out of the list, ASUU says
no that all must be fulfilled. Looking at it, it may
take a long time for the 2009 demands to be
actually fulfilled, meaning we may have to stay at
home for a long time. Adamawa university has
pulled-out. Adamawa ASUU even confronted ASUU
national body for going on strike without due
process. Akanu ibiam varsity just announced
theirs on NTA.
We're awaiting more varsities. Let's keep our
fingers crossed & pray

Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad
Abubakar III
By Mohammed Aminu and Damilola Oyedele
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad
Abubakar III, Monday frowned on the way Muslims
were being tagged as fundamentalists in the
country, saying suicide bombers were not
representing Islam but were mere criminals, who
should be dealt with according to the laws of the
land.
He also appealed to the Academic Staff Union of
Universities (ASUU), to call off the strike and
embrace dialogue with the federal government in
order to bring an end to the impasse.
Speaking during a dinner with journalists in his
palace in Sokoto Sunday night, the monarch stated
that Islam abhorred terrorism and the taking of life
of innocent people without due process, adding that
there was no plan whatsoever to emasculate any
religion in the North.
The Sultan, who expressed sadness over the strike
embarked upon by ASUU, lamented that students
spend seven years in some universities and
graduate without acquiring education.
He stressed the need for ASUU and the federal
government to go back to the negotiating table,
with a view to finding a lasting solution to the
problem.
"We are now back to square one and we seem not
to have a solution at hand to solve the problem. As
fathers, we will continue to plead. So, I am pleading
with ASUU to call off the strike and for the federal
government to be given a chance to fulfil its
obligation.
"I believe ASUU and the federal government should
give dialogue a chance. We must find a common
ground. Negotiation is a give and take and people
should negotiate based on mutual respect.
"I don't believe in strike action because students
suffer in the end. We want to see education move
to greater heights in this country. So, this should be
an issue of give and take and what ASUU will give
should be what the federal government will be able
to afford. So, I call on ASUU to suspend the strike
action, resume talks and go back to the negotiating
table so that we can make progress,” he advised.
But despite the several appeals ASUU has said the
federal government had not shown any
commitment to warrant the suspension of the
strike, which was currently in its sixth week.
According to the ASUU Chairman (UniAbuja
campus), Dr. Clement Chuks, although some
discussions were ongoing, there were no
negotiations as the union expected nothing less
than the implementation of the already existing
2009, Agreement.
Chuks in a telephone conversation with THISDAY
Monday, said there was no visible commitment on
the part of the federal government even from the
discussions held so far.
He maintained that ASUU stood by the existing
agreement and demands its implementation.
Chuks dismissed the recent pronouncements by
some government officials that the strike would
soon be called off.
He urged the government officials to play their part
and see to the implementation of the agreement.
"Maybe, they are just being prophetic, they cannot
call the strike off for us. There are procedures for
embarking on strike and calling it off," he said.
Meanwhile, the Sultan has maintained that there
was no compulsion in religion, and as such, no true
Muslim would use force to compel others to convert
to Islam.
"So, if anybody wants to wage a war to compel
others to convert to Islam whereas Almighty Allah
said in the Holy Quran that there is no compulsion
in religion, then that person is not a true Muslim
and not acting for Islam.
"Therefore, I want to call on all those who think that
what is happening in the North in particular is a
plan to exterminate other religions, to have a
rethink because there is no plan to emasculate any
religion.
"It is indeed sad that Muslims are being tagged as
terrorists in the media in this country. I have never
heard of Christian terrorists but all we hear in the
media is Muslim terrorists, when it happens to be a
Muslim. This issue is everywhere in the world
where people are tagged Islamic fundamentalists.
"As long as we continue to label other people
negatively because of the religion they belong to or
certain activities being done by a particular religion,
then we will continue to have a problem. Why not
treat such terrorists as common criminals and deal
with them according to the laws of the land?" the
monarch asked.
Speaking further, he said leaders should give
justice to the people in the discharge of their
duties.
On the 2015 elections, the monarch urged Nigerians
to pray to God to give them leaders who would take
the country out of her present situation, adding: "As
traditional leaders, we will always keep on praying
to God to give us leaders that will lead us right and
take us to the promised land."
The Sultan also commended the Peace and
Reconciliation Foundation of Nigeria led by Mr
Solomon Dalung, for its efforts in promoting peace
and unity in the North, especially in Kaduna and
Plateau States.
"These youths are doing what the elders should do.
The elders in the North are busy fanning the embers
of hatred, instability, disharmony, ethnicity and
religion for selfish reasons. It is sad that these
elders are in the comfort of their homes, while the
sons and daughters of the poor are being killed.
"So, I am happy that these youths have taken it
upon themselves to correct things that are not
going well in the polity. These youths are working
to ensure that there is peace, stability and unity
among different ethnic groups and religions in the
North and I commend them for that," the Sultan
stated.

ASUU Warns Candidates On Post-UTME
The striking Academic Staff Union of Universities
(ASUU) has warned that successful candidates at the
various 2013 post-UTME examinations to
government owned Universities may not be
recognised if offered admission from the exercise.
ASUU.1The union also described as cheap “political
statement” the pronouncement of Governor Gabriel
Suswam of Benue State that the strike would be
over on Thursday, insisting that the strike would
only be suspended if government implements all the
components in the 2009 agreement and the 2012
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
Disclosing these in Minna on Wednesday, the
Chairman of the Federal University of Technology,
Minna, ASUU chapter, Dr. Abdulfatai Jimoh, said that
none of its members would be involved in the
conduct the post-UTME for over 3000 candidates
slated for Friday and Saturday in the institution.
Jimoh, who was briefing journalists on the level of
compliance by his members to the industrial action,
warned that “any student admitted through the on-
going Post-UTME is on his or her own because we
would not recognise or teach such student.”
According to him, “if the management goes ahead to
conduct the post-UTME, none of the lecturers who
are members of ASUU would not participate in the
exercise and the students if admitted would not be
recognized by the lecturers. ”So help Us God.

ASUU’s strike not about salary reward – Don
on August 09, 2013 at 4:11 pm in News
Abuja – A lecturer at the University of Abuja, Prof. Femi Odekunle, says the current ASUU strike is not about salary or benefits but about ensuring an effective university system.
Odekunle on Friday in Abuja said that the claim by the Federal Government that some of the agreements reached between the union and government were not implementable was untrue.
“I do not believe that any agreements reached are not implementable, otherwise they would not even have been reached in the first place.
“And these issues that ASUU is fighting for have to do with infrastructure, funding and conducive environment for learning and all capture such nuts and bolts that drive the system.’’
“So the claim by anyone to say that certain aspects of the agreement are not implementable is fraudulent.
“If the Federal Government can put funds into the National Assembly in terms of salary and allowances, why can’t it do the same for education that produces the manpower for the development of the nation.’’
Odekunle accused the Federal Government of employing tactics that were creating division between ASUU and management of universities by its sudden increase of vice-hancellors’ salaries and allowances.
The don, who noted that some lecturers were also culpable in contributing to the sector’s decay, noted, however, that majority of the the lecturers were serious and committed.
He said that government should address issues, including the misuse of resources, corruption of the political and government class, high cost of governance and other issues that had continued to have adverse effects on the country’s development.
Odekunle advised the government to address the ASUU strike from its root cause and not to “play politics and games with our children’s future’’. (NAN
