abbakacici: Nigeria has 20 teaching hospitals, 18 Specialty Hospitals and 22 Federal Medical Centres. so based on your logic you believed that Nigeria cant have 16000 resident doctors. let used basic 1) residency is usually 5-8 years . hospital have like 20-30 unitsAfter all has been said the reality on ground still if the govt is responsible for training 95% of resident doctors you should know that its a dumb practice. Private hands should come in and fill in the remaining space. We have very few doctors in Nigeria, and the few doctors available prefer working for the govt because that's where they can get easy and sustained source of income. Govt really has to reform health care in this country and the best way to start is to reduce the workforce in her direct employ. A situation where a teaching hospital gets annual allocation from the govt that they cannot generate internally in 3 years is totally unacceptable. Do you know that majority of the docs with 1 year post nysc experience lack a lot of skills and the residency program provides an opportunity for them to enhance their skill set and productivity? So know from today that the relationship between the resident docs and their employer is supposed to be a win win relationship and the govt/employer holds all the aces. Without residency training where you and I present ourselves as guinea pigs for the training of docs the docs can never improve their skills. |

phantom: Bros a beg where u get these figures from? The total allocation for UPTH in the 2014 budget is #5,912,326,031( https://www.google.com.ng/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&ei=de7vU7efCIar7Ab7nYHQBg&url=http://budgetoffice.gov.ng/2014_budget_proposals/16.%2520Summary_Health.pdf&cd=1&ved=0CBoQFjAA&usg=AFQjCNHib5grggqQO2wYVsCR_S1w1LdV3A&sig2=llE6FidwdDOajcJHEvpsPg ) of which #5,379,822,988 to be used to settle personnel. So if you divide total personnel cost by 600 you have #8,966,371/year for each resident. You never include consultants, house officers, Medical officers, and other allied health workers salaries. So it is impossible that UPTH has 600 resident docs. 2 Likes |

abbakacici: as at December 2013 Official statistics show that there is one doctor to every 6,400 patients in Nigeria. This falls far short of the World Health Organisation (WHO) standard of one doctor to every 600 patients and is a grave threat to the physical and mental wellbeing of the country’s populace. Federal govt cannot employ all the docs in Nigeria. Do you know that some private hospitals have residency programs already? I really don't know where you got your figures from that the number docs sacked is 16,000. That's not true. Of one of the 24 demands by NARD, allowing house officers to joint the NARD is to enable the NARD increase her membership. The house officers are more than the residents docs and they are not up to 16,000 , so there is no way resident docs are up to that number. Besides residency program is a training program for fully registered docs being funded by the fed govt in fed health facilities, state govt in state owned facilities and private hands in privately owned facilities. If the fed d govt decides to suspend the residency training program the teaching hospitals will still function as a hospital and there are medical students/house officers to be taught by the consultants. So all these gists about consultants not being able to cope are mere assumptions as more consultants could be employed as only a small percentage of resident doctors are usually retained by the teaching hospitals. 1 Like |
Health / Re: Government Vows Not To Recall Sacked Doctors by akmoh(m): 12:17am On Aug 17, 2014 |
Dee60: So fed govt Should use the 52% to pay resident doctors? Are you aware that 90% of funds allocated to all govt owned hospitals are used to pay salaries? Are u also aware that fed govt owns less than 70 hospitals in Nigeria? Are you aware that more than 65% of health care services are renedered by private health facilities? Are you aware that of the doctors in federal govt employ constitute a minority of the total work force? Are you aware that there are over 1000 health facilities owned by the state govt? Are you aware that majority of the over 5000 primary health centres being managed by the local govt don't have doctors? So if the total number of resident docs are approx 16,000, divide that number by the approx 65 health facilities owned by the fed govt and that gives an approx 300 resident docs in each teaching hospital. This figure makes no sense. So point of correction the number of sacked resident docs are not up to 16,000 and NO the suspension of residency program affects only fed owned health facilities where doctors are being trained. Health / Re: How Do Doctors Calculate Medical Bills? by akmoh(m): 2:15am On Sep 18, 2013 |
doctors calculate bills because they are either too greedy or broke to employ an admin or accountant to make bills for them or they feel like a superhuman that can perform all task in a hospital. ideally every service, procedure(lab or surgical) and drugs have their prices fixed. so the cashier just has to look at what was given to the patient service and drug wise and totals the amount to derive the patient's bill. but in Nigeria, doctors manages most hospitals and as such calculates hospital bills based on what they feel they are worth. if a consultant gynecologist performs a CS on a pregnant woman, he will probably charge higher than a doctor with say 5 Years post NYSC experience. so my people, there is no standard for calculating medical bill in Nigeria; bills depends on how godly a doctor sees himself |

50calibre: This NYSC people should learn to respect people's religious beliefs and choices.7 Zuwo! People should learn to respect simple rules and regulations. Discipline is one of the virtues, the NYSC tries to instill in her participants. If she cannot obey the rules of the scheme, she should go and form her own NYSC! It would have been easier to respect the faith of insisting on wearing skirts, if all christians, or those who profess to follow christ, insist on wearing skirts! Muslims insist on their ladies covering their head, so every institution respects that because they are unanimous in that practice. But for christians, some denominations, allow wearing of trousers to church by her female members so, insisting on wearing skirts is not a christian practice, rather it is a personal belief! NYSC seeks to build institutions and not individuals! |

Romance / Re: What Is Wrong In Marrying A Lady Who Is A Virgin? by akmoh(m): 5:29pm On Mar 01, 2013 |
achina boy:There is nothing wrong in marrying a virgin! The thing is that every relationship, including marriage has a purpose. I believe the ultimate reason why God created the marriage institution was for companionship, and then procreation! So being a virgin does not guarantee that she is going to make a good companion, and ultimately, a good wife. Her virginity simply implies that she has not had sex! It is not a gift! And I disagree is that virginity is the greatest gift a woman can give to her husband. There are other gifts like being a good homemaker, being resourceful, being a good manager of the home, and above all being a good friend that accept and loves her husband for who he is! 3 Likes |
