Agriculture / Cost Of Rearing 500 Broilers In Nigeria With The Profit Amount by Chidisam(m): 1:37pm On Oct 30, 2021
It is needless to state that poultry farming is one of the most booming businesses in the agricultural sector in recent times. Consequently, people dive into this business with little or no background studies or training, thus making the same poultry farming mistakes several farmers have made.

One such mistake is improper record keeping like the cost of production, losses, profits, direct and indirect expenses, etc

Without proper record keeping, you are just like a leaf floating in the air without a direction-its fate could be anywhere. The same fate awaits any poultry farmer who does not keep proper record keeping.

However, in this post, I am going to estimate the cost of rearing 500 broilers in Nigeria with its profit amount.

Although, my last post on cost and profit was on; cost of rearing 100 broilers in Nigeria with the profit amount, and several people requested for the cost of rearing 500 broilers, which we are about to dive into now.

Please, get a piece of paper, a pen, and a calculator because we are going to do some calculations.

Without any further ado, let get down working.

How much does it cost to rear 500 broilers in Nigeria?

Let assume you have a structure already in place and manpower/labor will probably be done by you and your family, but I am still going to estimate it for those who may which to employ a helper. I am very certain that one helper will be enough.

These are the major expenses at the time of writing this article:

500-day old chicks (DOC) at ₦515 = ₦257,500

1 piece of plywood for making brooder @ ₦2,000. 3 x 2000 =₦ 6,000
2 bags of charcoal for heating the brooder = ₦8,000
2 charcoal burners (Jiko) = ₦6,000
15 bags of wood shavings@₦200 = ₦3000

How many bags of feed will feed 500 broilers for 8 weeks?

The table below contains the age, expected body weight, and the cumulative feed intake for male and female broilers from week one to week nine.

We shall be using the table to estimate the quantity of feed 500 broilers will consume for 8 weeks. To continue Learning, click the link below

Agriculture / 10 Reasons Your Chickens Are Not Laying Eggs And How To Fix It. by Chidisam(m): 5:36am On Oct 13, 2021
There are several reasons why your chickens are not laying eggs again. Sometimes, they might have gone through stress, health challenges, nutritional problem, molting, lighting issues, etc.

However, some of these problems are natural why some are not, but with good management practices this problem can be rectified and your chickens will start laying again.

If you are a poultry farmer or just a backyard chicken keeper, you may have noticed a sudden drop in egg production in your flock and you get worried, however, this is not the time to panic because you might take a wrong decision along the process.

There are some questions you have to answer before taking any action. Answering those questions will enable you to make an informed decision.

SO, if your chickens (hens) stop laying eggs you can identify and find out the reasons by asking the following questions:

1. Molting issue: Have the hens been laying for 10 months or more?

Your hens are probably approaching their end of the laying cycle... If that is the case, they will stop laying, go through a molt ( loss of feathers), have some rest, and start laying again.

The period of molting varies depending on the chicken breed. For backyard chickens, it takes about 8 to 12 weeks and can cause a sharp drop in egg production. To continue reading, clink the link below

Agriculture / 6 Common Chick Diseases You May Encounter During Brooding by Chidisam(m): 5:25am On Oct 13, 2021
The first week of the life of a baby chick is characterized by intensive welfare and management, to keep them away from harsh environmental conditions and protect them against diseases, which may be detrimental to the over raw growth and performance of the baby chick.

Taking care of a baby chick can be so challenging, especially in the first seven days of life. These challenges include harsh weather conditions and life-threatening chicken diseases, and which may lead to high mortality rates and poor production.

Therefore, it is essential you plan ahead on how to prevent these common chick diseases and their treatment in case of any eventualities.

1. Calibacillosis in Chickens ( Chicks)

Colibacillosis is one of the major infectious bacterial diseases in baby chicks and laying chickens. It is caused by Escherichia coli which are always found in the gastrointestinal tract of birds and disseminated widely in feces; therefore, birds are continuously exposed through contaminated feces, water, dust, and the environment (Charlton, 2006).

In addition, (Nolan et al, 2013) stated that Colibacillosis in neonatal chicks can also be a consequence of poor chick quality and sanitation in the hatchery, leading to early... Clink the link below to continue reading

There are some questions you have to answer before taking any action. Answering those questions will enable you to make an informed decision.

SO, if your chickens (hens) stop laying eggs you can identify and find out the reasons by asking the following questions

Besides the chicken breed, other factors determine how long a chicken will molt. Age, nutrition, and the environment all contribute to how long a chicken will molt.

What to do during molting

Feed your chickens a high protein diet to help them with feather regrowth. One cheap way to do this is to process the feathers and feed it to them. Feathers contain 80-85 percent protein.
Once you notice molting in your chicken you should switch to a complete feed with 20% protein, prebiotics, probiotics, and essential vitamins and mineral.
Keep your molting chickens comfortable and stress-free. Everybody deserves a comfortable environment during vacation including your chickens.
While switching from layers feed to the high protein feed, you should mix both gradually as you change over to avoid digestive upset and shock.

Note: If your chickens have been laying for less than 10 months, something else may be responsible for the lack of production. This will lead us to the next question

2.. Feeding problem: Are your chicken eating enough of the right feed (balanced diet)?

The quantity and quality of feed you give to your laying birds will have a huge impact on their egg production.

To eliminate feed as a possible reason why your chickens stop laying, you have to ensure your feed is of high quality and the hens are given the required daily amount at every stage of their life.

However, we may be overwhelmed by the high cost of feed, which may cause us to cut corners by supplement their feed with low-quality grains. But in most cases, we end up incurring more losses than expected.

If you are formulating your own feed, care should be taken in selecting the right feed ingredients that are palatable...To continue reading, click the link below

Agriculture / 7 Reasons Why Your Broilers Are Not Growing by Chidisam(m): 7:17am On Jul 20, 2021
The reasons why your broilers are not growing could involve more than one reason.

The two basic causes of stunted or slow growth in broilers are poor welfare, which may result in a disease outbreak, feed poisoning, accident, high temperature, etc, and genetic make- up of the broiler chicken, which sometimes may not be corrected easily.

All these factors are capable of causing stunted growth in your broilers.

However, every broiler farmer expects to attain uniformity in growth and weight in his or her flock.

The farm becomes depressed when these expectations are not met. Which in turn will hurt his return of investment, especially when the number of runts increases- runts are animals, especially birds smaller than their mates, caused by poor health or poor nutrition, but could grow to full size as his mate if given special care.

Fortunately, this condition could be prevented or minimized if you follow my tips and suggestions. Moreover, I have researched 10 reasons why your broilers are not growing. To continue reading click the link below

Agriculture / How-To Use Garlic For Chickens For Better Performance by Chidisam(m): 7:08am On Jul 20, 2021
The health benefits of garlic ( Allium sativum) for chicken and humans are mind-blowing. In fact, scientists have not been able to research all the health benefits locked up in garlic.

Needless to say, garlic has been extensively proven to contain antioxidant and antimicrobial effects and being an important culinary ingredient, garlic and its preparations are widely used for improving the flavor profile of continental dishes.

Garlic has been proven to be one of the natural growth boosters for chickens

Before we dive deep, what exactly is garlic?
A member of the onion ('Allium') family, garlic is classed as a vegetable although many people think of it as a herb.

It consists of several small 'cloves' bunched together into a 'bulb' or 'head' and covered with a thin, paper-like coating.

Originating in Asia, it's been around for centuries and has been used medicinally for human beings for almost as long.

Can chicken eat garlic?

The chicken will eat anything palatable and pickable, and this does not exclude garlic. At least I can still remember my mum normally feed garlic and other kitchen wastes to our backyard chickens, which they savor with delight.

One of the reasons why I love chickens is that they instinctively know what they want and they will feed and pick anything that will nourish their body.

And garlic is one spice and herb that have both nutritional and medicinal effects and it will be an honor to feed them to your chickens, they will definitely love it.

Although you may have come across some articles claiming that since garlic belongs to the onion family, garlic will be poisonous to chickens.

This claim is not entirely true. This is because the make-up of garlic is totally different and the element that causes problems in onions - thiosulphate - is present only in tiny quantities in garlic.

Moreover, there extensive peer-review on the potency of using garlic for chickens, and the outcome of the actual researches are overwhelming.

But there is always an exception… to continue reading click the link below

Agriculture / How To Make Chicken Lay Big Eggs And Make More Profit by Chidisam(m): 9:17am On Jun 04, 2021
The best way to maximize profitability over the lifetime of your flock is to maintain an average egg weight between 56g to 62g, as these eggs are classified as large eggs. This requires a high level of attention to bird management.

Today's laying pullets are coming into production and peaking several weeks earlier than was the case a few years ago. Although there may be some debate as to the contribution of genetics, management, and nutrition in bringing about this change, most people agree that earlier maturing pullets usually result in more profitable layers.

One of the problems with earlier maturing pullets, and a factor that continues to keep them from being readily accepted by the industry, is a higher percentage of small eggs. However, there is a potential saving that is associated with early maturity, but how effective can it compare is a debate that is open for research.

How then do we prevent early pullet maturity for large eggs?

Research has shown that heavy chickens lay heavier eggs, but most of these large eggs have a thin shell and can cause egg binding in laying chickens. The aim is to find a balance between these extremes. Several factors influence the weight of eggs, these include lighting and temperature, feed intake, body weight, protein, and age, breed, and pullet management.

Next is how you can manipulate these factors to get the desired egg size without affecting the overall performance of the layers. Nevertheless, follow the steps below if want your chickens to lay large eggs:.. clink the link below to continue reading

Agriculture / How To Choose The Best Broiler Breed For Optimal Performance by Chidisam(m): 9:02am On Jun 04, 2021
Choosing the best broiler breed is a crucial step you have to take care in ensuring you have a successful production. This is because when the best broiler breed is selected correctly for the intended purpose, all other resources and time invested in the production will probably do well.

The reverse is the case when the wrong/bad broiler breed is selected- Your time and money will be wasted. I had a client that her supply was a mixture of different breeds, they all seem like broiler until after two weeks when she noticed their growth was not in uniform. The problem at times might be from the hatchery, or from our misconception about the broiler breed.

Let us correct this Misconception: Referring to Hatchery name as Breed name

What is the difference between a Hatchery name and a Breed name?

Hatchery names like Agrited, CHI, Amo, etc (are some hatcheries in Nigeria) are names or brand names of companies that market a particular broiler breeding stock ( Parent stock).

The name given to this broiler breeding stock by its creator is known as the Breed name. eg Cobb 500, Ross 308, Arbor acres, Hubbard, and Marshall are common broiler breed names in Nigeria.

What then is the Misconception?
The misconception here is that most broiler keepers have replaced the breed name with the brand or hatchery name. In Nigeria, you can hear people say I want Agrited, or Agrited is the best instead you say, I want Ross or Ross is the best. What if Agrited decides to market another broiler breed, will the new breed have the same feature as the old one? Your guess is good as mine. The same scenario can be observed between Arbor (a breed name) and CHI (a hatchery name).... Click the link below to continue reading

Agriculture / 8 Ways To Make Broiler Chicken Grow Faster by Chidisam(m): 6:10am On May 04, 2021
The wish of every broiler farmer is to attain the expected weight of their broiler chickens in a very short time, despite that broiler chickens are bred to grow fast, some factors may hider this process. Example of such factors includes bad breed, poor nutrient, and welfare, diseases, etc. Therefore, to make your broiler chickens grow faster you have to prevent these negative factors, and with an enabling environment

By the end of this post, you should be able to grow your broiler to attain 2.5kg at week 5 (35 days) at minimum, surprised! There is no voodoo nor any synthetic booster that you will need to apply. All steps are simple, practical, and natural. I promise you, if you put these 8 steps into use, you will be left with a dropped jaw. The result will amaze you. The only problem you have with this method is that people will start asking you how you did it.

One of the advantages of your broiler growing fast is that you will market and sell your broilers faster with more profit at 5 to 6 weeks, especially to eateries and hotels.

Now, let us look at the 8 ways you could make your broiler grow faster

1. Select the Right Breed from a Reputable Hatchery

Selecting the right breed of broiler will depend on what you want. However, we have several breeds of broiler all over the world but they are few that have to stand out. Here in Nigeria, we have 6 common breeds of broiler chickens. Each with its unique features.

Let see the 6 best breeds of broiler chickens in Nigeria

*Cornish Cross Broilers:
If you need a fast-growing broiler, go for Cornish Cross Broiler ( also known as “Cornish Rock”). It takes about 6 to 8 weeks to attain marketable size.

*Grinphield Marshall

These breeds of broilers are big and tall. It takes approximately 6-8 weeks to attain “table size.

*Moyer’s K-22 ( also called Red Broilers)
It is less fatty and has a unique fragrant with an excellent texture. Although it takes a bit longer to attain ‘table size’.

*Red Broilers
This breed also takes a bit longer to grow. However, the primary advantage of these breeds is their strong resistance to diseases, which makes them suitable for free-range.

*Roaster Chicks
( also called Moyer’s Broiler or Cornish). These broiler chickens attain a weight of over 2kg by 6 weeks of age. They have a good skin texture with tender meat.

*Rosambro Broilers.

These broiler chickens belong to a medium-grow type. Nevertheless, they grow a bit faster than the red broilers. The special taste also characterizes their meat.

It is important to note that not all hatcheries are trustworthy, thus, in purchasing your desired breed ensure you do a proper background check on the intended hatchery before securing your broiler chickens. If you get a bad breed, all other efforts will be in vain, and your broiler chickens will not grow fast as expected.

2.Take advantage of the First 7 days
The first 7 days of a chick's life are very critical. Research has shown that 80% of its energy is focused on growth while 20% on maintenance. What this means that if you give your chick an adequate amount of feed in a favorable environment the feed conversion ratio will be very high. We can see a day-old chick triple in...To continue reading click the links below
