Family / Re: 70 Year-old Gains Freedom After Wrongly Imprisoned For 40-yrs by drisatasarr: 11:38pm On Jan 24, 2015
newsnow:
Emotion flow, when a 70-year-old man from North Carolina was released after serving four decades in prison for a crime he did not commit.Read more...

A panel of judges has found Joseph Sledge was wrongly convicted in the stabbing deaths of a mother and daughter nearly four decades ago.

After his release on Friday, the 70-year-old said he was looking forward to sleeping in a real bed and maybe swimming in a pool.

Sledge was sentenced to life in prison in the September 1976 slayings of Josephine Davis and her daughter, Aileen. They were found stabbed to death in their home in Elizabethtown, a day after Sledge had escaped from a prison work farm where he was serving time for larceny.

The judges heard from a DNA expert who said none of the evidence collected in the case matched Joseph Sledge. A district attorney apologized to Sledge and promised to reopen the case into the 1976 slayings.

"The system has made a mistake," district attorney Jon David said. "The wrong man is in prison."

After the judges' decision was announced, Sledge was still for a moment, then hugged his lawyer and family members who attended the hearing.

His nephew Maurice Sledge said the family planned to take him to Savannah, Georgia, to live with one of Joseph Sledge's brothers.

Sledge is the eighth person exonerated after the state set up the North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission, the only state-run investigative agency of its kind. The commission found there was enough doubt to review Sledge's case, and the state Supreme Court appointed the three judges to hear it.

In addition to fingerprints, DNA and hair gathered at the scene that didn't belong to Sledge, a key jailhouse informant, Herman Baker, signed an affidavit in 2013 recanting trial testimony. Baker said he lied at the 1978 trial after being promised leniency in his own drug case and he said he'd been coached by authorities on what to say.NEWSNOWAFRICA.COM

As great as the U.S. is, there is race and gender issues. There is a lot of prosecutorial misconduct and police officers manufacturing evidence and framing witnesses. Good news is that there are those that continue to work in search of truth for all. In Nigeria there are civil rights luminaries like Falana etc who are doing same. Those years can never be returned, but hopefully the system will find a way to compensate him and his family.

Health / Re: I Need Help With Blood Sugar by drisatasarr: 2:11am On Jan 24, 2015
vivaciouzz:
please I need help as regards to blood sugar..my mom's blood sugar is high and I need to know the type of medication or natural herbs that can be taken to control n reduce d high rate..I don't want to lose her to an unknown ailment plz..she has gone to pharmacies n clinics but d drugs recommended for her ain't helping matters

Best thing you can do is get Mom to a physician ASAP. Get some labs to check basic metabolic profile, HgA1C, lipids and urinemicroalbumin.
Best approach is :
Lifestyle modification, exercise prescription and drugs. First line drug is Metformin. If she is not controlled you may add SU or TZD. If it's still not controlled, you may consider new insulin regimen of basal insulin once daily plus meal time insulin. You may also look at newer drugs like DPP4 antagonist or GLP1 depending on their availability and finance. There are others like SGLT2 that you may also consider.
The goal is to keep A1C less than 6. Her blood pressure and cholesterol needs controlling. Make sure her feet and eyes are checked yearly.
Do these and she will see her great great grandchildren. Good luck.

Health / Re: Prostate Cancer: How Frequent Do You Urinate At Night ? by drisatasarr: 5:42am On Jan 20, 2015
ryom:
Every Nigerian man above the age of 40 years should have their prostate health checked yearly. This consists of a digital rectal examination (DRE) carried out by a doctor and a blood test called PSA. You can optionally add ultrasound scan of the prostate (KUB USS). Our people are so poor at checking their health. People will service their cars but not their bodies. There are other health checks to do once you are 40 (this includes women too). Do not wait for symptoms to develop. Be proactive. That way we will blame the next door neighbour or some old witch in the village less for untimely deaths. I am more than happy to advice further if you have any specific concerns.

PSA is no longer recommend for routine screening of prostate cancer in men. DRE is recommended in men over 40 yrs old during routine physical examination . PSA may be done on a case by case basis based on risk.
Health / Re: Prostate Cancer: How Frequent Do You Urinate At Night ? by drisatasarr: 4:36am On Jan 19, 2015
A good history and physica exam to include a DRE in men over ager 50 or younger men with strong family history of prostate cancer is the current recommendation. Doing a PSA blood test is now discourage as a screening test. The PSA is still used in high risk groups and to monitor the effectiveness of prostate cancer treatment.
The best guidance to Nigeria men is to :
1. Eat healthy - Mediterranean diet
2. Exercise
3. Do not smoke cigarettes
4. Do your physical exam and discuss your risk with your doctor.

Politics / Your Tax Money by drisatasarr: 4:34pm On Jan 16, 2015
Lagos State government collect 66% of its income from taxes. If you look around Lagos there is no sign that the citizens benefit from this heavy taxation. No water infrastructure, no electricity, no healthcare, no good schools, no road, no jobs, really their is NOTHING the citizens get for this huge tax burden. The polititians eat well, drink well and send ALL their children abroad while the children of Lagos suffer. The reason why we pay taxes is to develop infrastructure, improve economy and the lives of citizens. It's kind of obvious, isn't it ?

It is conceivable that we will see $35/barrels. The Saudis are very efficient and can survive at this price for a while. Russia is in trouble and they are busy making plans to deal with this low price. Nigeria has no plan except two
1. Let us pray
2. Let the poor fast or starve
How reckless is that.

Obese people also have mental illness like Depression, Anxiety and Bipolar disorder. She needs help to loose weight, not encouragement to get fatter.

Health / Bleaching Is Not Healthy. by drisatasarr: 1:10am On Jan 11, 2015
A common practice among Nigerian women and some men can lead to
1. Skin cancer
2. Decreased immunity
3. Disfigurement
4. Loss of self esteem
5. Chemical burns
Keeping your skin moist and clean is best. Black, white and yellow are ALL beautiful. I am aware of a major Yoruba Oba who keeps bleaching. He looks quite rediculous and undignified.
Health / Re: My Mouth Keeps Bleeding by drisatasarr: 1:02am On Jan 11, 2015
First you need a good oral exam as part of an overall health assessment. If everything is ok, then you must see a dentist to rule out gum disease. It is important that we stress to our brothers and sisters the need for dental visit every 6 months. Also flossing and changing your soft toothbrush frequently is best. I once met a guy who never floss and uses toothbrush until all bristles are worn down. As bad as it sounds this is common among Nigerians.
Health / Re: Cypri Gold Caplets by drisatasarr: 12:55am On Jan 11, 2015
I never recommend supplements or vitamins for several reasons.
1. They are not FDA regulated
2. For the most part you DONT know what you are taking
3. Best way to get vitamins/supplement is to eat a balanced diet
4. Majority of those who make and sell them do it purely to make money
5. Most experts now agree that there is no evidence to support they are beneficial
6. Some vitamins/supplement can hurt you
There are some exceptions
If a woman is anemic Iron supplements are fine
If you are diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia- Calcium with Vit D is fine
If you have low levels of Vit D or magnesium, it is fine to replace
I don't think it is safe for people to just ask a pharmacy or look on google and decide that vitamins or herbs are ok. Always consult a qualified doctor of medicine.

I have been a member of several organization that require individual to produce evidence of minimum requirements. In some cases it is difficult to produce a secondary school certificate or a WASC certificate, college diploma etc. For instance how many 50yr old Nigerians can produce their primary school certificate or even WASC or GCE. I for example went to a well known school in Nigeria, got a 6 in WASC. I don't even know if I got my WASC certificate from my school before leaving for UK.
Let's not be silly. I hope INEC will not allow itself to be drawn into this nonsense talk. The bottom line in ALL the candidates are qualified to run. FFK is in instrument of discord in our national growth and development. It is sad that he finds it necessary to impune the good name of those who chose to serve their country. The likes of FFK have no place in a civilized society. It is curious to note that as minister of Aviation, a position that he was NOT qualified to hold, he only got it by kissing BABA'S ass , the only legacy he left was that of A COMMON THIEF.

Your guy is married to the Nigerian girl. You know deep down this is the case. Stop trying to convince yourself it is not. Obviously your husband is NOT honest with you and will never be. As bad as it is, it will get worse with this man. You don't need him. Move on with your life. It is complicated now that you are pregnant, but God will see you through.

We must be careful what we do on this forum. Depression and all other clinical conditions that lead to suicide thoughts, attempts etc should be left in the hands of EXPERTS who have the education, training and experience to handle such conditions. Untrained or un licensed persons should NEVER attempt to advise or intervene in this things. This can be very dangerous.
