Dating And Meet-up Zone / Re: {ladies} Weirdest Thing You've Done On A Lonely Night (be Sincere) by elbeyah(f): 11:22am On Jun 18, 2007
@ anwuli
there is no need to regret what happened cos it has already happened.
and all those pople judging you, dont mind them they have done worse.

my only advise is that since you could be despserate enough to go out at night to catch some action, try and get a regular sleeping mate (no strings attached since you say your not ready for a relationship) who knows whats up and also agrees to the arrangement.its safer cos you were lucky the guy you took home was good.what happens if you try it again? who knows something may start off with the sleeping mate.

also let your saftey be the first priority, you need to be alive and healthy to enjoy f@*$ing!

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: This Should Stop! by elbeyah(f): 9:58am On Jun 18, 2007
i understand what the first guy is trying to say.

if you are so insecure in your ability to excel in a given test, dont advertise the test. cos personally i dont see any harm in stating the venue of a test you were invited to.

i have seen a number of people who gate crashed and got the job. just becos you were invited for a job and some one else wasnt doesnt mean that your better than the "gate crasher@. might even be the other way round. i guess thats what all you @hoarders of information are afraid of" grin. well you cant hold anybodys destiny, if the "gatecrasher" is ment to get the job, he will and you wont!.

Family / Re: My Mum Is Too Harsh; Help! by elbeyah(f): 8:32am On May 10, 2007
been reading all your replies, dont know wheter to laugh or cry sad becos:

1.i once thot my mum was strict, later on as i got older i only found out that it was only "an act of love" to prepare me for some harsh realities of life. funny enough, i can say i am a better person becos of this "harshness" from my mum.
2. my mum passed on to higher glory in 2003 and i wish i could freeze some of the moments we had together.belive me i would give anything to hear her voice again, no matter what she is saying.

in summary to those complaining:cherish what you have, its for your own good.but if you think its too much, call her and talk to her with love.afterall shes your mother, the reason why your here and not an unfeeling monster.also both parties should be able to come to a compromise.

Romance / A Question For The Guys:are You Afraid To Toast A Well To Do Lady by elbeyah(f): 11:16am On Jan 23, 2007
the reason for my question is this:
there's a lady at work, nice looking 30-33yrs old, slim, set with all the right features etc etc.she lives with her friend in a self-contained flat and recantly bought for her self a rather cute rav4 jeep(AS A RESULT OF HER SAVINGS FROM HER OIL COMPANY JOB).
all the guys are laughing at her that she will never find a husband(one that is her age mate, who hasnt been married before/still married & without "bagagge"winkcos she "lives alone" & "is showing off too much wealth". what makes it more annoying is that one of the guys was her classmate in university & now he has a wife, child, car, oil company job and so feels like he knows what he is saying (after all he got married first! and he's a guy!).

so does a lady with a good job & nice salary package have to pretend in other to get a husband? what happens when the guy sees her "real colours" and he cant cope?

Jobs/Vacancies / Keeping Your Résumé Out Of The "no" Pile by elbeyah(f): 10:45am On Jan 23, 2007
heres another article that i thought people of nairaland will be intrested in.best of luck as we all continue to search for jobs.

Keeping Your Résumé Out of the "No" Pile
By Tag and Catherine Goulet, FabJob.com

The last time you applied for a job and didn't get an interview, was your résumé tossed on the "no" pile after someone skimmed it for only a few seconds, or did the employer read it carefully and you just missed making the cut?

Seventy recruiters met recently at the University of Calgary's Haskayne School of Business to discuss what can make or break a résumé. The recruiters represented a variety of industries including oil and gas, tourism, technology and financial services, and some of what they revealed may surprise you.

An employer may review 100 or more resumes in an hour, spending only 20-30 seconds on each one. "Recognize that most employers are using the résumé to screen you out rather than to select you in," says Derek Chapman, Ph.D., professor of industrial organization and psychology at the Haskayne School of Business.

Getting Attention

"If you don't catch my eye, you're out," one recruiter said. That doesn't mean you should use bright pink paper or multi-colored lettering, but several recruiters said they don't mind applicants including a photo. Creative photos (such as the shot an applicant included of herself in a snow suit with snowmen on either side and a caption saying "I'm the one in the middle"wink might help land the interview.

However, Chapman cautions against including a photo. "A photo can be used to screen you out on the basis of your sex, age, national or ethnic origin, etc. If someone hires you for your good looks, are you sure you want to work for that supervisor?"

Name Dropping
A better way to catch an employer's eye is to include names of well-known companies you have worked for. As one recruiter explained, if you previously worked for a reputable company, it enhances your application "because they have some standards." Employers are likely to assume you will be a good employee because you successfully passed that company's hiring process and were well-trained. If you haven't been employed by any large companies, consider doing an internship or volunteer work for a well-known organization.

Surprisingly, "name dropping" only works when mentioning companies. The recruiters said they are turned off when an applicant writes in a cover letter that they were referred by someone such as a company executive. The employers said if someone really thinks you are a good applicant that person should deliver the résumé to the recruiter or phone on your behalf.

Résumé Mistakes
While employers want résumés that are error-free, making a mistake such as addressing your cover letter to the wrong company won't necessarily disqualify you from the job. Of course, it depends on the employer. For some recruiters, that kind of mistake is inexcusable. However, many others will allow one or two mistakes -- even stapling the second page upside down -- as long as you have the right qualifications.

To minimize mistakes, proofread your résumé. Your spell-checker doesn't know you meant to say "manager" instead of "manger".

Another surprise is that about one-third of the recruiters at the session said they do not read cover letters. To make sure your important information doesn't get overlooked, it should be in your résumé.

Making the "Yes" Pile
Here are some additional tips to help you make the "yes" pile:

Have a conventional e-mail address. Your name is fine; kookybear@hotmail.com or partyanimal@msn.com are not.

Tailor your résumé to each job you apply for. Make sure it shows you have the skills the employer is seeking for that particular position.

Use lots of white space and bullet points to help information stand out.

Include interests that are relevant to the job. If you are applying for a job in agriculture, for example, show that you have rural roots.

If you are submitting an electronic résumé use a standard format such as Word to ensure it can be opened.

Don't disclose irrelevant personal information. ("I don't want to know you are 5'6," and weigh 195 pounds" one employer said.)

State your accomplishments rather than just your responsibilities. "For example, simply stating: 'Managed a budget of $200,000 annually for training and development' is not nearly as powerful as 'Reduced training and development costs by 20 percent while maintaining the quality and quantity of training provided to employees'," Chapman says.

"Placing positive information at the very beginning and again at the very end of the résumé helps keep the employer's attention and capitalizes on the psychological principles of memory to work in your favor," Chapman says. "Remember, most employers are only skimming your résumé at first to make a preliminary decision. Make sure they can find your information easily."
Jobs/Vacancies / Six Ways To Embellish Your Résumé Without Lying by elbeyah(f): 1:05pm On Jan 22, 2007

Six Ways to Embellish Your Résumé Without Lying
By Kate Lorenz, CareerBuilder.com editor

Most of us accept the fact that, many times, a sales pitch tends to stretch the truth: That stain remover really can't make a grape juice stain disappear from white carpeting "like magic," and Sea Monkeys aren't really cute little mermaid-like creatures that frolic around in an underwater kingdom.

But stretching the truth on your résumé, even though it is the equivalent of a sales pitch promoting you, is never acceptable.

Of course, you may not have to endure the public humiliation David Edmondson, former CEO of Radio Shack, did when newspapers across the nation reported he resigned after admitting the degrees listed on his résumé were "incorrect." And Oprah isn't likely to rip you on her show like she did James Frey when false portrayals of his past in his "non-fiction" memoir "A Million Little Pieces" were uncovered. But the point is, while you may feel the need to pump up your résumé to grab an interviewer's attention and land that prized position, eventually these "little white lies" will catch up with you.

So how can you enhance your résumé without going overboard? Try some of these tricks:

Avoid half-truths and gross exaggerations.
Most hiring managers and recruitment professionals have had their share of résumés pass across their desks during their career. So they are usually adept at deciphering embellishments in a résumé. They know that spending the last 10 years as a "domestic engineer" means you simply were home with your kids.

Keywords can help your résumé stand out.
Rather than embellish your titles and accomplishments, use recognizable industry keywords that will jump out at hiring managers reading your résumé and communicate exactly where your expertise lies. Keywords also help your résumé get flagged if you're submitting it electronically or posting it on a job site.

Focus on quantifiable accomplishments
Use specifics when detailing your past accomplishments -- the amount of money you saved the company, the number of employees you managed, etc. Rather than saying you saved the company millions, state precisely that you "saved the company $2.4 million." Actual numbers and percentages sound much more credible.

Change titles only if it clarifies your position.
If your title uses little known, company-specific jargon, such as being called an "office contact," when you performed duties consistent with an "administrative assistant," then go ahead and use the better suited title. You could list your title on your résumé as "office contact/administrative assistant." Of course that doesn't give you the latitude to promote yourself to "vice president of administration."

Address gaps in your résumé.
Instead of fudging the dates of your past jobs to cover an employment gap, address the lapse in your résumé or cover letter to maintain chronological clarity. For instance, if you were out of work for a year during which time you took courses to enhance your education or professional credentials, list this academic stint on your résumé, rather than pretending the period of unemployment never happened.

Half-finished degrees should not be listed.
If you "almost" completed your degree, you cannot list it as an earned degree on your résumé. However, no education is ever wasted. Be sure to give yourself credit and list any completed coursework in a particular major or concentration.

Jobs/Vacancies / Seven Steps For Showing Your Worth On Your Résumé by elbeyah(f): 12:42pm On Jan 22, 2007
hey nairalanders i just wanted to share this article i read with y'all. hope you get something out of it.

Seven Steps for Showing Your Worth on Your Résumé

What Can You Do For Us? The Power of Accomplishments
By Arlene S. Hirsch, author of "Job Search and Career Checklists
"

From an employer's point of view, there is no greater predictor of success than past performance. To convince potential employers that you are the best candidate for the job, you must be able to clearly articulate and sell your accomplishments.

Step 1: Start by writing one-line statements about various aspects of your experiences (in school, at work and through community/professional activities). Use your résumé checklists to organize your thoughts.

Step 2: Convert each activity into an accomplishment statement. Accomplishment statements usually begin with an action verb, describe your activities and end with a statement of what you achieved.

Examples:
•  Reduced operating expenses by 25 percent by improving efficiency and decreasing expenses.
•  Selected new vendors for office services, resulting in improved customer service and satisfaction.
•  Generated $50,000 in new sales during first 12 months.
•  Created media relations campaign for healthcare provider, resulting in story placements in three major metropolitan newspapers.

Step 3: Make your list of accomplishment statements as comprehensive as possible. You can always make editorial changes later.

Step 4: After you have completed your list, edit the statements to use the most powerful verbiage and reflect tangible evidence of results.

Step 5: If you are using a chronological résumé format, make sure that you list each accomplishment directly beneath the company where you acquired it.

Step 6: If you are using a functional résumé, you will need to group related accomplishments together under functional headings (regardless of when and where you accomplished those results).

Step 7: Finally, review your accomplishment statements in the context of your specific job objective; then organize and present the statements in order of their relevance to the potential employer.

hey girl, first things first i think your girlfriend needs to be kicked in the behind. this is a newyear and we all need people with positive energy around us.i am lucky to say that i have GOOD girlfriends and i know that no matter how bad it is they can never tell on me,especially to my boyfriend, rather some sense would be pumped into my head with serious talking to.any girl who calls her self your friend and tells your boyfriend things behind your back(ESPECIALLY LIES) needs to be rough handled.what exactly does she hope to achieve?

2.if my boyfriend hears anything about me especially from my friend, contrary to what he already knows about me so far, he will not rest.he will stylish ask me questions till i get suspicous and ask him what his problem is. if your boyfriend heard things about you, he should be troubled to the extent of trying to find out the truth even if it means asking you.
