Education / A Cry From The Dungeons Of Yabatech by Enyola(m): 1:14pm On Jan 15, 2009
REAPING FROM THE LABOURERS

Can someone please tell me, must the tuition of Yaba College of Technology increase every year? I bet the answer to that question is no, but the Management of YabaTech is at it again; preparing to reap from where they did not sow a single seed. We are yet to recover from the shock of the one million prospective students (fresher’s) list they released just weeks ago (I wonder why that was signed by the DP rector and not Registrar), and now they are seeking funds for their utopian million dollar project(s).

It is no longer a surprise for the management of this college to release unbelievable fees every session, in fact the tuition of this college as experience over 400% increase in the last four years and yet like Oliver Twist, they still want more. Sometimes I wonder where all this funds goes into; all the projects going on in this college are being funded and managed by external sources (Alumni—ICT building, and the ZENITH bank  project e.t.c). Where did all the money we paid last semester disappear to? Our water got more color, the building more cracks, our lecturers (ASUP) spent more hours complaining about money than they did in class and even the welfare of this school is nothing compared to what it used to be. Now we scramble for sits in classes and our laboratories are mock dorms and toy skits. Our library is empty in the real sense but filled with books from the ages in reality, the football pitch looks good from afar but you can only look and not touch (big padlocks), even when our athletes get to use this facility (we only have a football pitch) training hard to represent the institution in competitions, they only get dumped like a pack of cards afterwards with huge but very empty promises. Socket-Works they call it, but even the sockets in our hostels and classes work better than it (although none is working anyway). We paid for the WIFI (wireless internet connection) but even the single LAN ports in our classes are not working, We still print out Course Registration Forms, payment confirmations slips (MySchooMyFee) in order to complete paper registrations, even after (mock) registeration online and our online portal will only pass for that of a secondary school although managed with millions of naira while students from this institution develop and manage the websites and portals of multinational companies and higher institution amidst all obscurities. The works of students in the school of ART gets international recognitions while our ID cards can easily get us NURTW recognition (compare yours with that of the next “Agbero” you see).  It’s been a comedy of errors since Olubunmi Owosho came in and now he’s about to step out with a bang.

Sometimes I wonder if this is truly a Federal Institution, because it is like nothing that happens in this college concerns the authorities in charge of federal institution. We all know that the college claims autonomy when it comes to managing it affairs, yet to still sit on federal allocations and extort us in every way they can,  How much did our Rector and other management staff pay when they went through the different level of Nigeria’s educational system, obviously nothing? They were the set of Nigerians that complained about the half chicken Awolowo’s education was providing even though they paid nothing for it and yet they put sickles to our neck, yearning to reap every pint of blood in our veins. It is time we say no and put an end to this extortion.  If students of a Federal University like Unilag are paying just N5,500 to get such a high level of quality  education, with access to full functioning library facilities (e-library inclusive), well serviced and equipped laboratories, unhindered structured access to the internet, in a cool serene environment with every element of social life that enhances psychological development.

Why should I pay so much for nothing? Tell me why should we all pay so much for nothing?

The management of this institution cares about nothing; they are only efficient when it comes to asking or demanding for money, they are lackadaisical when it comes to the reason we are here,  Nobody cares whether we receive lectures or not, no classes for the few and yet they want a thousand in a class, I think we will be receiving lectures under the trees they have already axed down and sold next session, and maybe we write exams in YabaTech primary and secondary school classes too. To proof all they think about is money, even with the numbers increased, they still want to squeeze thousands of naira from each student, running into millions from each department and yet they are not satisfied. Now they demand N38,200 (Thirty eight thousand naira) from fresher’s and N19,200 (Nineteen thousand two hundred naira) from returning students and yet they define it explicitly in every breakdown that tuition is FREE, how will they justify the usage of all this funds?

Even if we don’t know what is happening in UNAB, UI, FUTA, EDE-Poly, UNN or any other federal government institution in the country, we have a federal neighbour in UNILAG, we know what happens in this institution and we want to believe that as a federal institution, they receive the same level of attention from the government. So why are we different?

Ø      Why will a returning student in UNILAG pay N5,500 and I am forced to pay 4X this amount?

Ø      Why should I pay for sport facilities that should be a part of my education, and even after I pay, the gates are locked and sporting equipments kept as if they are souvenirs, what happens to my N2,500?

Ø      Why should I pay so much for ICT (Socket Works N3,000) and still end up submitting my online registration form at Desurge Café on a portal that never works, and still go around with paper works?

Ø      Why should I pay N3,000 for result verification when it is the duty  of the College to verify my results after I am made to submit copies of the original certificate and not statement of result, why should I pay so much when WAEC will collect only N1,500 from me as an individual, how much will they pay per student for the verification exercise? Laspotech charges 1,500 while UNilag is even lower,

Ø      Why must I pay N6,500 to indicate my acceptance of the provisional admission I am offered, why make a fool of me by asking me to pay so much when my writing the JAMB and making YabaTech my 1st choice was a conscious decision and not an Illusion, why should I pay N3,000 for a library stocked with books from the past, with the e-section locked up for reason that are yet to unfold. A library filled with a huge collection of old books, materials and a archive that can take you back in time, the type the librarian read when he was a boy. Some times I get the feeling that the college is planning to start a History department because of her rich heritage and background backed with the large stock of the school library.

I feel the need to say more but I know mere words won’t be enough to turn the tides, I am tired of telling myself that there is a need for change, I think it’s time the world around me embrace the reality of it and the rest of the world get to see what we are going through.

We are not just complaining, all we want is a change, I am not complaining, all I want is a leadership that thinks of the people and not its purse. It’s like they forgot that they are here because we are and not the other way round, so why will they want to chase us away with so much fee without caring. We are the future of this society and we deserve better than we get from the administration of this institution. We know they are at their extreme already, very close to the inevitable, that is why I will not sit down and watch then destroy what is our own, they will be gone, we will be here and we will live to suffer the consequences if we keep silent.

I am rich and I live in abundance but I won’t be alive alone if others are left behind, I will be the one to bear the burden. We must succeed together to reach the future we desire. I live to stand out and stand tall, I live to stand for the values of others because only through this will I retain the value I have accrued over my years of struggle toward success.

I stand assail in all circumstances to conquer and produce the imaginable and unimaginable but not alone. No man is an island so we must take One Stand Voice and Action (Kingsley Onyeochara 2008) and demand that which is rightly ours. I stand today to say Enough is Enough, in fact, “He Don Do!” it is time everything that happens in this school is about the students and not about fattening the fattened purse of the school management. They should leave and let us live or stay and do what is seemingly right in the sight of God and men or else they will get a double fold of recompense they deserve followed by the non-violent but chaotic wrath of the student. We are the mind of the gods and I will never stop speaking with my pen which is mightier than sword

Long Live Yaba College of Technology (Ilya De Teco)

Politics / Police In Ipaja Police Station Are Harassing People by Enyola(m): 2:29pm On Aug 31, 2007
It is now getting to an alarming rate, and rapidly becoming unbearable. The men of the police force at alagolo police station, ayobo police station and stations in this vicinity are become daily treats to motorist and people.

They are busy extorting motorist and people everyday while thieves rob at almost everypart of the community everyday. Even yesterday, a cafe called massabol was robbed while Police wre busy collecting toll at Gate, Austars cafe where i am now was rubbed last week thursday while police were gathered in front of their station collecting money from motorist. one of my church member was shot on the same day by this same set of robbers just a stone throw from there black spot, and the next day they go all around arresting people. Thank God the era of yagooo! is gone, but now it is either toronto or seargent bukky and the likes.

Something has to be done about them, they are more like the thieves now cos they operate in the dark and collect even from beggars.

Aboki wey sake make dem dey arrest people with dreads and miniskirts, abeg help me do catch corrupt cops too ooo!!

Politics / Re: President Obasanjo Enrols As Theology Student Of National Open University by Enyola(m): 5:23pm On Dec 02, 2006
Thats good for him, he's a man with a mission, a thief witha vision, he started Effc to hack down anti-third-term politicians(case study), he started privatisation to make to turn Obasanjo farm that was in ruin when he was a prisoner to Obasanjo Holding, a multinational establishment that is now so rich that he could purchase 1 million shares from transcorp Ole!!!, i wonder how much he collects as salary, even His disabled son that just finished school was reach enough to purchase a house worth $500000, i wonder wetin abirun fit do to earn so much and when they asked his Dog Ribadu what he was going to do about it, he said the disable is an independent citizen while mohammed babangida, mohammed abacha and even Glo baba,Adenuga are being investigated day and night, i am sure those ones are inter-dependent citizens, he sent ribadu after yahoo boys while senators, honorables and government officials are growing pot-belly on the money of the masses, when you ask him baba Iyabo will tell you, 'am saving for the future, ' a future his generations are going to regret being part of, EFCC should go and investigate ODILI his boy, dat boy is a good boy even when Rivers is in pieces and billions are being accounted for everyday, yet he wants to become the president, don't worry h e wil become the presi of the leppers, insane minds and his office will be in Yaba apa osi, lol,

Everyone knows baba iyabo is up to something, i guess maybe he wants to come and tell us that he's now born again and that he wants to come help Nigerians, don't worry he will go preach his gospel in prison. God please give him long live, enough for him to serve his Jail terms, i promise to buy him a greek bible and a greek dico as well so that he will use big big grammar like chris Okotie,

lol
