@scofild
I think it all depends on why u bought the stock, was it a cico or was it long term hold and at what prz you got in, as for me i felt like having a stock in that sector, so am in for the long haul i will not be pertubed by movements like the ones we have witnessed in the recent days and also i try not to time the market, i leave that to the experts and those with the time and the type of brokers. So my bros think bout it, if you are in for cico may be u should consider other stocks that have better potentials in the immediate, but if u are in like me i believe there are better days ahead.
As usual, all caveats apply.
Good luck to u.

NSE denies knowledge of Afroil, Capital Oil suspension
By Obinna Chima
Published: Friday, 21 Mar 2008

The Nigerian Stock Exchange has said it is not aware of the indefinite suspension placed on trading in the shares of Afroil Plc and Capital Oil Plc by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The Principal Manager, Corporate Affairs, NSE, Mr. Shola Oni, said on Thursday that the NSE was yet to receive any information from SEC on the suspension of the shares of the two oil companies.

Oni said, “We read the story on the pages of the newspapers just like every other person and I think that will not be the best for the system. The relationship between the stock exchange and SEC has always been cordial, but there should always be due process.”

SEC had, on Wednesday, announced an indefinite suspension of trading in the shares of Afroil and Capital Oil on the NSE. The commission said the decision was a fallout of an investigation into the activities of six companies, announced on February 15, 2008.

According to the commission, the two companies were involved in insider dealings.

The commission had declared that the basis for the continued trading and rise in the prices of the shares on the exchange, no longer existed, adding that the decision was to protect stock market investors.

Prior to the commencement of the investigation, the Director-General, NSE, Prof. Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke, had flayed SEC for not informing the Exchange about the activity.

Our correspondent gathered that, despite the suspension, there was still trading in the shares of the companies.

Some stock brokers said that the shares of the companies were, largely, in offer on Thursday as investors were apprehensive over the announcement.

The stock brokers, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, berated SEC for not informing the NSE before carrying out any activity on the Exchange.

According to them, the perceived unhealthy relationship between both organisations can create tension in the capital market.

“We all agree that SEC is the regulator of the capital market, but there should be due process in everything. The commission has to understand that the NSE, to an extent, is also a regulatory body.

Without the stock exchange, I don’t think there will be anything for SEC to regulate,” a stockbroker said.

At the end of trading on Thursday, Afroil, which sold at N24.13, traded 4,424,117million shares, valued at N106.754m in 342 deals.

For capital oil, 3.414 million shares worth N55.006m were traded in 144 transactions. It sold at N16.11

Is it just me or are the peeps at NSE and those at SEC on a power tussle
I guess this na naija

@scofield
to concur with what the other peeps have told you, i think u should go back and read as many pages as possible, I know it seems tedious but it will benefit you in the long run. If  i were in your shoes i would not sale anything in ths porfolio in a hurry at this time. but if it isa must that you sale, i will pair down the ins. now and look for some sectors with stocks that have strong fundamentals(fbn uba ) for this bear period at least that way if you don't make alot of money, u will be consoled by the fact that u had capital preservation.
Cavaet emptor.
by the way i own fbn, uba and erterna oil.

And they say there is no price manipulation in the nse? this stock has been a supernova since taking off from 47 less than a year ago. I am sure some insiders new there was going to be a po at 250 thats why the stock did not slow down till it crossed that N250 do you all remember what Oga Napoleon said about these kinds for shady manipulations?.
Where is the toothless tiger(sec) thats suposed to protect the market from all these shenanigans

I guess no one will be talking of over subscription with this ap po, anyway anything is possible in Naija
i Guess Otedola and co have not made enuf money from the price appreciation, If this one is oversubscribed, there has to be some investigation by sec. With the po price you will need 2.5m to buy up to 10k shares, na waoo.

Politics / Re: NNPC To Be Divided Into Five Companies by gonyix: 11:17am On Sep 06, 2007
The only solution to the problems that are prevalent at NNPC, is privatalization.
Breaking it up into smaller entities while a good idea would only work in a less corrupt society, not in Nigeria.
And bye the way I think Mr. Yaradua is only breaking it up to repay the sponsors of his election with appointments.
Politics / Re: Soludo Dropped From National Economic Team by gonyix: 1:03pm On Aug 28, 2007
Iyke, I appreciate your objectivity and open-mindedness, I  like most other Nigerians supported this president fervently when it became obvious that he was Obj's choice. This we did because of the fact that we saw Obj, his other problems notwithstanding, as a reform-minded leader and him picking the current president gave us hope that the reforms initiated by Obj would continue under the current president. But the Events of recent has put doubts in our minds as we wonder whether there is a better future for Nigerians under this new president. With all the lackluster decisions that he has made so far I wonder how long it will be before this man realises that he as a President is only going to be as good as the people he surrounds himself with, and so far, I am not sure that he has made a any efforts to surround himself with the right people instead of sycophants and yes members. For any one with the intellect of Soludo or Chigbue to be treated in this way makes me believe that Obj may not have been such a great democrat but he does had an eye for picking the best and the brightest a talent that Mr Yaradua from all indications seem to lack. Is the job of the economic team about moving the country to a sound economic state or is it an ego trip and only about Mr. Yaradua and his power brokers. No doubt that Mr. Soludo erred in not intimating the president about his plans to re-denominate the currency, but is the president's response not an over reaction?  How can you have an economic team that does not consist of a man who heads the central bank of the nation and is responsible for most of the monetary decisions in that nation, and a man with a strong track record of reforms that have yeilded great value and credibility to our economy? As for Mrs Chigbue there is no doubt that she has done the country proud in a position where most of her predecessors did not make it this far and could not point to any tangible achievement during their tenure. She has performed her job diligently with honesty and  compassion in a Country where corruption is so entrenched that any attempt to choke it off is met with such fierce resistance the like of which we have seen recently from the big and mighty in Nigeria and the Nlc who are made uncomfortable by the fact that for ones the refineries might be sold to people who might demand accountability and dedication to duty. As was rightly stated in this forum these two will not miss their jobs if their jobs were to be taken away from them at this time, but it will be a great loss to this country, both of them are smart and well educated and will definitely survive, but the biggest losers in this president's ego trip and rush to establish himself as his own man, free from the shadows of his predecessor, will no doubt be the Nigerian masses and the international community that has started to develop interest in the Nigerian economy due to the Privatization scheme headed by Mrs Chigbue at the BPE and the monetary, banking and other reforms instituted by the CBN under the able leadership of Mr. Soludo. These two afterall came to their current positions not through political connection or God-fatherism but through their ability and their track record of good performance and now their being made to pay a price for having such an enviable position withot any political God father, afterall we are in Nigeria, how dare you get a plum job based on your ability and performance record instead of on who you know. All these decisions no doubt have politics written all over them and a misguided politics at best. Unfortunately thats why our country with all its potential remain in its current deplorable state.  I do hope that our president with his credibility gap brought to bear by the percieved electoral irregularity that brought him to power will be able to reverse his course before it is too late.

Business / Re: The Dying Factories Of Nigeria by gonyix: 2:54am On Jul 07, 2007
It is unfortunate that no one, including the rich upperclass and the so-called Nigeria's elite do not believe anymore in building any manufacturing base. Rather everyone has dusted of his or her credentials and renewed old friendships, in search of lucrative government contracts, enormously lucrative because as is usual with anything Nigerian, NO ACCOUNTABILITY.
I mean why build a factory, manufacture something that the masses actually want, advertize it,sell it, and wait to make a profit(i mean the normal way manufacturers make it), when you can get a government contract at a bloated price, get paid alot without actually showing what you did for the huge profits you made, as long as you grease the right palms( things that people go to jail for in serious countries)
How far will this over-dependence on government contracts take us when the manufacturing base which is the mainstay of the economy of any serious nation, is left to wither at the vine , only in Nigeria, GOD HELP US.
