Education / Re: 98% Of Candidates Fail As NECO Releases NOV/DEC Results by jacobs123(m): 6:30pm On Mar 18, 2010
otukpo:

Too bad.
Our children don't study their books again.

Why should they study their books? Their fathers that studied their books are still being owed their pension and dying slowly on pension queues across the country after their meritorious career.
Someone once said to a Christian "your actions speak so loudly I don't hear what you say". We can preach whatever we want but our children know that at the end of the day education counts for nothing in this country and you can always buy a certificate if you ever need it. the most important priorities now is to "HAMMER"

Sometime in 1995, I was discussing with some of my mates in a tertiary institution that a time is coming when there won't be people to solve the Orijos (exam question) that people buy before exams. As young people back in 1995, we could anticipate that disaster lay ahead of us but in 2010, our Politicians still haven't figured that we are in trouble.

Bottomline however is "what is the value of education in today's Nigeria"?. I think it's close to being worthless and I keep saying it we should prepare the minds of Nigeria's children for SLAVERY because that's what we've set them up for!

I don't think there's any hypocrite like this man. can he please shut up if he can't call their names. He condemns the same people who appear in his magazines as the "rich and classy". He projects these thieves as role models while showing their pictures and names and tries to condemn them without putting their names.
When people talk he compares his useless magazines to OK and HELLO as if those magazines are filled with thieving politicians, civil servants and other public officials.

Politics / Re: Ministers Can't See Yaradua …would Need Clearance From Saudi King Abdullah by jacobs123(m): 11:09am On Feb 20, 2010
If the ministers are not allowed to see Yar Adua, then Yar Adua should be impeached, the Presidential jet and crew brought back home and the Nigerian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia recalled back home.

If the Saudis like they can even make Yar Adua their king but as for Nigeria we are through with him if they don't allow the Ministers to see him. I hope the Saudis know that this could end up to be big trouble and handle it carefully.
Politics / Re: Dele Momodu Back To Thisday Newspaper by jacobs123(m): 10:28am On Feb 20, 2010
If I were in his shoes, I will recall the security details of our President from their mission in Saudi Arabia, and replace them with fresh ones. I will summon our Ambassador to Saudi Arabia home to debrief him. I will write a letter to the Saudi King, and express both appreciation for his kindness towards our President, and disgust for the manner Nigerians have been totally snubbed in the matter. I will remind His Royal Highness that when the former King Fahd ibn Abdulaziz had a stroke, he was the Crown Prince Abdullah ibn Abdulaziz at the time and was allowed to rule for many years. As a matter of irony, the current Crown Prince Sultan ibn Abdulaziz has been ill and was actually flown to the United States of America for intensive care. The Saudis were not kept in the dark. The media went agog with blow-by-blow account of his progress or lack of it. When he got better and was flown to Morocco to fully recuperate, the Saudi media followed him with the same frenzy.

Only a Thisday can allow Dele Momodu access to publish his opinions. I guess we all knew that Dele would always seek relevance with any new government. These are the kind of people that Jonathan needs to avoid. My advice to this fellow alumnus of GREAT IFE is to stick to his photography job.
Politics / Re: Yar'adua Will Handover To Jonathan - Special Adviser by jacobs123(m): 9:17pm On Feb 05, 2010
mikeansy:

You can believe in anything you like but know one thing. If Yar'adua has any chance of coming back to power, OBJ would not have made the open statements he made. Believe it or not, OBJ still has access to intelligence reports.

I AM WAITING FOR THE RESIGNATION OF MICHAEL AONDOAKAA FOR MISLEADING THE NATION AND OPENLY OBSTRUCTING THE CONSTITUTION FROM TAKING ITS COURSE.

That OBJ's move for me was one of the most important signals that we are in a post Umoru Yar Adua era (can't say so for Turai yet). I'm sure OBJ doesn't want to go to jail or be run out of town like Ribadu. For Shagari and co to come out again asking Yar Adua to resign tells me the man won't be exercising that executive powers again. Then, the information minister (American green card holder) asks that her boss should hand over and refuses to resign.

If Goodluck does not sack Aondoakaa (the most hated Nigerian) in his first 10 days as acting, then Goodluck is not worth that office.
Meanwhile, something tells me we are about to witness another looting frenzy (that will make Abdusalam Abubakar look like a saint) courtesy Patience Goodluck Jonathan. This woman and her husband have less than 2 years to steal enough to make them comfortable for the rest of their lives. (Goodluck is 52 years and the oldest of their children is not even in University yet, no weddings to celebrate!)

Something also tells me that if Nigeria doesn't get it right with Goodluck this time around, we can as well forget it!
Politics / Re: Dora Akunyuli Asks Yardua To Step Down! by jacobs123(m): 3:43pm On Feb 04, 2010
What folks fail to realize is that these guys are only hawks to the extent that Yar'adua is there. Right now there is no proof that Yar'adua is fit to be in office. If Jonathan was bold he can lead the efforts to now uphold the constitution.

And if Jonathan stands his ground, these so called hawks will have no choice than to shut up until they are able to produce Yar'adua to come and reclaim his seat.

In fact Jonathan can raise his game and reconstitute the cabinet. People are just afraid of nothing in this country.

Is there anyone who wants to honestly say that if this was OBJ 70days on a sick bed in a Foreign land. Atiku wont be running this country by now?
Jonathan just does not know that he is an elected Vice President not anybody's personal assistant or boyboy

Eziachi:

If OBJ was silly enough even to be away for two weeks straight, I think that Atiku will take over the government. Jonathan a.k.a Papa Suwe is clueless, he is always happy to act out his name-Goodluck, but history shows that luck do ran out sometimes.

I thought Jonathan would have suprised even himself and fly to Saudi one day unannounce and to the surprise of everybody, but what did he do, he lied to have spoken to Yar Adua. Thy said he is being cautious. Cowards always hide behind the big word- CAUTIOUS!

I think these guys have captured it well. How can they threaten Jonathan with a sick President and he keeps quiet there and this is the guy that wants to be President. It tells you a lot about the kind of leadership this man will offer. We are probably going back to President Patience Jonathan, guess that's Nigeria's destiny either we choose or Turai or Patience!

As for Dora, better late than never. If Goodluck presides over a meeting that declares a sick man as fit to rule and even claims to have spoken with Yar Adua, then you can't blame Dora. Must you cry more than the bereaved? Does Goodluck not have anyone in the FEC? Even Yayale and Ojo maduekwe have told the us that they haven't seen or heard from Yar Adua so why did Goodluck lie to us? is it the fear of Turai? If Obasanjo with all his power and vindictiveness could not get rid of Atiku, how will a sick Yar Adua get rid of Goodluck so what is he afraid of?
For millions of Nigerians, it's not that we expect any change from Goodluck but just insisting that the right be done and if Goodluck Jonathan is so afraid to be on our side then good luck to him. As far as I'm concerned if he doesn't become Acting President, his political career is finished cos I can't think of any Nigerian politician that will allow anyone named Goodluck to be his Vice again. He's also got very young children so this "good fight" is as important to him as it is to Nigerians.
Business / Re: Dangote Liquidates $1.27bn Loans In 10 Banks by jacobs123(m): 12:24pm On Jan 24, 2010
symbolic:

He had to make noise because he was breaking a record in loan repayment. He was to start paying back the loan with effect from August 2010 to span for 5 years ie 2015. He paid up all the loan even before it was to be due for repayment.

An indication that even though cement manufacturing is capital intensive, its actually a money spinner. One needs to visit Obajana to see how trucks of cement are rolling out with ease everyday.

He is still expanding the factory to increase capacity by 50% and paying off a huge loan at thesame time.

Its also a message to Sanusi that he is paying up his loans wink

This guy has really impacted on the economy of the nation and still expanding. He should be appreciated and supported.

Nigerian journalists will never cease to amaze you with their ignorance and sycophancy. How can refinancing a debt be something that is so celebrated.
I'm not a finance expert but I believe what this guys has simply done is to get a more favourable loan from Standard Chartered and use the money to pay off the harsh loans from our local banks. This is what any sensible business man will do.

I hope they don't go advertise this on CNN too.
Politics / Re: Yar’adua Has Been Discharged From Hospital — Pdp by jacobs123(m): 6:40pm On Jan 20, 2010
Having watched a lot of home videos, i know there are different sorts of discharge from hospital amongst them are
Discharged to go home after the doctor ascertains that you are in good health or good enough to recover at home
Discharged after the Doctor gives up, in this case they may direct the patient to his/her mother or older family members so that they can get in touch with the Dibias/babalawo and Alfas to go on from there.

I hope Yar Adua was not discharged to create space for other patients in the hospital but I have to assume this until i see him and "touch his heart" which was infected with Pericarditis.

Guys, this must not be allowed to stand. I went to the BBC website below and made a complaint about the report. In my opinion it is fraud and they need to apologise for trying to hoodwink Nigerians into believing that they spoke with their leader when the reporter "Mansur Liman" could actually not confirm who was at the end of the telephone or how he got through to him.

Please make your complaints
Politics / Re: Yar'adua Interviewed By BBC: He's Alive Afterall! by jacobs123(m): 3:04pm On Jan 12, 2010
What did the interviewer ask the President to warrant such an answer? Was is it Yar Adua that called or the other way round? How come we never heard the interviewer's voice at all?
It just doesn't add up! The voice even makes Next story on brain damage more believable. For the President's men to be so desperate to present Yar Adua's voice in so much pain and agony shows that they would even be happy if he were in such a "healthy" state
Politics / Re: Yar'adua Interviewed By BBC: He's Alive Afterall! by jacobs123(m): 1:58pm On Jan 12, 2010
Am I surprised at the name of the interviewer?, Mansur Liman! A president is MIA for 50 days and all he grants an interviewer is 52 seconds of phone call and the interviewer proclaims the man is alive afterall. And to think that he granted the interview only after he's been declared dead! Even if this Mansur Liman was a rookie, won't he smell foul play?
This is a great disservice to the people of Nigeria from BBC. If Gordon Brown was MIA for 50 days in SAudi Arabia, will this be enough to douse tensions in Britain. I guess we Nigerians got ourselves in this, now we need the Mansur Liman's of this world to tell us that Yar Adua is ALIVE.

Maybe the militants in the creek should kidnap a british national and send them a 52 seconds voice call after 50 days so the BBC can understand what they've just done. When British citizens (soldiers/civilians) are kidnapped in Iraq and Afghanistan, they don't even accept telephone calls alone not to talk of Nigeria's President.

Mbuzo:

From the posts I have been seeing on this forum, I think will volunteer to serve as the enlightener here. No insult meant so no apologies given.

For those of us that are demanding video evidence of Yar'adua's speech, stop to ask yourself why even the US does not seem to know where our President is. That should tell us something about the dangerous international intrigues that is surrounding the man. The US, without question has recently exhibited desperation over Nigeria. Is there something they know and we don't, about our country?

Clearly the US is no more controlling us as they used to and that is pissing off so many loose pants in Washington! Let met state categorically: IF THE US KNEW WHERE YAR'ADUA WAS, HE WOULD HAVE BEEN DEAD! TAKE THAT TO THE BANK!

VIDEO EVIDENCE? Wake up my brothers. We may be a developing country, but we are not naive. The question is: for the President's location to have been so effectively shielded from public glare, was it done with the aid of any other super power. I am just agitating our minds here because I trust the inspiration of the Nigerian.

Please shed the call on video evidence!

Come to think of it: Which African country can survive internal destabilisation without a sitting President or an Acting President? Bros, this country is solid! Yet we are classified unstable when lesser countries with little structure are comfortably playing hosts to lustful, ludicrous and untidy western officials, whose main diplomatic objective is wine bars, booty calls and Visa Credit Cards.

This is the classic African mindset. Everybody else is responsible for my problem apart from. It's my wife, my mother, my mother -in-law, my father etc but no I have no hand in my woes. Guess what, the world is used to our whinning and can't be moved. Seems you have this exaggerated view of this your solid country.
The President of your solid country is dying/dead in a Saudi hospital
The wives of two former heads of state of this solid country died in Spain and America
The Yar Adua daughters are hustling for American passport for Yar Adua's grand children, enough said

As some one that works in the oil industry, let me tell you that if the Americans leave, the British will follow and guess what in less than 2 years we will run down the industry as we don't have the competence. If you think the Chinese will be the solution, you will soon find out what the Sudanese are finding out.

The Zimbabweans thought farming was easy until the sanctions came, I hope Nigeria doesn't follow that route. A proverb in my language says " they told you your step mother is superior to your mother, and you are saying it's just a little, that little can't be bought" They are the powers and they can ruin us even if they suffer for it. And guess what, they will still get the oil whichever way, ask the Iraqis.

Everybody keeps talking about China but have we learnt what the Chinese did, they stooped to conquer not fight like Cuba, Libya, Venezuela etc.

Thisday newspaper should be ashamed for publishing this story from Taminu yakubu that Yar Adua spoke with anyone.
It's high time Nigerians every where started marching towards the Saudi Embassy for kidnapping our President.
Politics / Re: Yar’adua Not With Us - Saudi Hospital by jacobs123(m): 6:22pm On Jan 05, 2010
I called the saudi hospital and they told me Yar Adua is not with them that I should call the embassy but I guess that is standard answer.

The joke is actually on Nigerians. Who thinks the Americans won't know if Yar Adua is dead or even if he's in coma after all there's a high probably that he's not being treated by Saudi doctors. So the Saudis and the Americans (including the west since they share intelligence) probably know that our president is dead or in coma yet we the citizens don't know.
I think we should blow up the Saudi embassy in Nigeria for kidnapping our president and they will start to talk (we are not regarded as terrorists for nothing).

This drama doesn't look like it's gonna end well for the Yar Aduas. You sort of get an interesting perspective when you remind yourself that Turai's daughter is in US to give birth. The daughter of our President hustling for American passport for the President's grand daughter!

You have a point saying that the occupational hazard in Nigeria is too much but please take note that Journalists did not push for Freedom of information bill at least not NUJ.

I think the NUJ is much like the NLC often fighting for things that can easily be arranged such that it is institutionalized. I still hold the useless NLC responsible for the troubles in the oil/gas downstream when they did not allow those refineries to be sold. at least we would have stopped the Turned around maintenance and the NNPC people that keep stealing money through that avenue.
Politics / Re: Useless Journalism In Nigeria (Name and Shame) by jacobs123(m): 9:00pm On Oct 28, 2009
As for me, when I check a Nigerian newspaper, I simply choose to try and read between the lines believing what i want and inferring what I like. Most of the stories are like adverts, you can simply tell who paid for the story to be written. It comes as no surprise that the quality of journalism is low because the newspapers are owned by politicians (Sun, Independent, Compass) or their apologist (Vanguard, Guardian) or people who have made their newspapers available for the highest bidder (Thisday). of course my list is not exhaustive.

The other side is that these journalists are so poorly paid that they will write anything you want and the price is not so much. I was once at a function organised by some oil coys and you can't believe the way journalists were struggling for food, drinks and souvenirs. It didn't come as a surprise to me that in their report me, they had me as a staff of another company and other issues.

There's also another annoying thing about these journalist the "names withheld" syndrome.

I had to stop buying newspapers this year because it was just a waste of money. anything i can't read for free online, I allow it to pass. Imagine Sun Newspaper treating their readers to "Kalu leadership series", is that not enough to make any sane person puke?
Family / Re: Wombs For Rent In Nigeria - Is This Greed Or Madness? by jacobs123(m): 4:36pm On Oct 17, 2009
People are justifying this as surrogate mothers but methinks it's nothing but extreme poverty. Look at the amount they are asking for, 200,000 naira (just over $1,000). That same 200,000 naira can not pay for 1 year rent of decent accomodation in so may places in Nigeria!

And we are wondering why there is a siege on all the embassies including the Chinese embassy, when they can choose to stay back in NIGERIA and live as "first class" citizens.

We have been enslaved, pure and simple. Before a nation goes into slavery, the citizens first become slaves in their country and the evidences abound.

Drivers working almost 18 hrs a day to get paid 15,000 naira.
House maids for 7,000 naira a month
People running the whole day in traffic just to sell plantain chips, recharge cards etc
Civil servants earning minimum wage of ~7,500 a month while a senator can legitimately earn over "30 million Naira"
Army of jobless high school / university graduates
Army of child beggars

we can keep deceiving ourselves but looks to me like there is trouble ahead. What NIgeria is setting itself up to is not pleasant. While we may not like to hear it, crude oil will go out of fashion even if you bring the OPEC sec gen to lambast America for considering alternatives.

Back to the topic, why are these girls not getting married?, Simple answer is the Men are unemployed and cannt be thinking of Marriage especially with the spiralling cost of living.

Business / Re: Thanks To Sanusi: Foreign Banks Reject Letters Of Credit From Nigeria by jacobs123(m): 9:14pm On Sep 15, 2009
Deep Sight:

Mr. 3 Doors - No need to congratulate me, that degree was obtained more than a decade ago.

I have read the stories in the links you provided. Please do take the time to study again my earlier post. But in fairness to you, i must state that i missed out one important point.

I see all the references to the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act and the CBN Act made by Sanusi and i am not impressed by those references at all. The reasons are very simple:

1. Under the Nigerian Judicial System, the Constitution is the Supreme Law of the Land, and where any other law is inconsistent with the Constitution, then it becomes void to the extent of its inconsistency. In this instance though, i do not really see a contradiction in the laws, but we need to be aware that constitutional provisions come first.

2. The laws he referred to actually empower him to give loans as a lender or last resort. However there are many laws that give powers to government officials to expend monies - that does not mean that those monies need not be appropriated first! His powers are to be excercised after appropriation by the Parliament, not before. I pointed out to you that this is a scary precedent, because whereas our National Budget is about N3 Trillion, Sanusi has already printed and disbursed a sum that is almost 20% of that! And he is set to do more. Where will the madness end? We need to interprete the laws more circumspectly.

I also failed to mention to you that there is actually within the law provision for a "Contingency Fund" which can be used to deal with situations like this with the approval of the National Assembly. Sanusi did not toe that path.

The unilateral printing and disbursement of public funds to private enterprises is a very very dangerous precedent.

Regarding the insults, that which is immature is immature, and i make bold to repeat that regarding Sanusi. My problem with you was the suggestion that i was high on some narcotic on account of my reverse perception of his actions. Haba now?

I'm sorry I was not patient enough to read your story but incase you do not know Soludo printed money too but didn't announce it. he printed the money he used to start AFC and he's been injecting money into Oceanic and Intercontinental since last year. You said you are a lwayer yet claim that Sanusi's actions were an illegality, the same thing the Stupid Ozombachi of house of reps argued blindly and his friends had to excuse the media so they can save him from his ignorance. I'm an Engineer but my lecturer told melong ago that if you have any dispute, do everything possible to settle it before you call the lawyers 'cos they won't help you.
Which constitution have you been reading from? You read the same thing and turn it around and you guys end up spending donkey years in court arguing over what is pretty obvious.

ilohim:

I have always said it & will continue to say it:Yaradua had no buiness employing Sanusi Lamido as CBN governor;a man who studied Islamic studies in Sundan, his total banking experience if I am not mistaken is not up to 5 years, yet we have seasoned bankers who have over 30 years experience, they were not good enough;he was the only 'seasoned banker' in the eyes of government, what else were Nigerians expecting?!
Even when people raised the issue of Federal Character, the president shut his ears and brought in their hatchet man to destroy the banking sector in the form of 'selected cleansing', yet worse banks are still standing, eg Unity Bank and the same CBN says the remaining banks are 'sound' what a laff!

Sanusi has ended up eroding public confidence in the whole banking sector, both home & abroad, from all the comments he has been making in various interviews he has granted after his 'selected cleasing',his actions were guided by deep rooted, ethnic, tribal & religious sentiments; afterall, he has also said that Islamic banking is the solution to Nigerias' banking sector problems, when Nigeria is not an Islamic country.

For me he deserves an award: 'The Banking sector destroyer for the Year 2009'.

Kudos, CBN governor, you have done the Northerners proud!

if i'm not mistaken,Sanusi definitely has more than 5 years banking experience. Please who are the seasoned bankers with over 30 years experience that you talked about? I hope it includes Erastus Akingbola, Joseph Sanusi, Otunba Subomi.
Business / Re: Thanks To Sanusi: Foreign Banks Reject Letters Of Credit From Nigeria by jacobs123(m): 4:39pm On Sep 13, 2009
What have we done with previous letter of credits but import all sorts of junk, toothpick, petrol, toilet roll, generators, juice, rice, sardine etc. All the things that we have no business importing if our bankers and those in government had any brains.
The letters of credit has made us lazy and even encouraged desperate business men to kill Nigerian companies so they can continue importing and continue depleting our foreign reserves.

If we think well, we will be creating jobs here not asking for letters of credit. If you ask me, I see this as a welcome development for a nation that has chosen the easy route.

By the way, for the companies refusing the letters of credit, it's not like there is a crying demand for their products? who needs their tooth picks, diesel, juice, generators apart from the STUPID people known as Nigerians.

Ever so often we seek change as Nigerians but when someone comes up trying to do his/her little bit, we turn round and crucify them. Some like Dele Momodu even give them a fail grade before they even get started and while advising us to pray for a "benevolent dictator" or even say it's only the President that can fix the country as if it's the President that causes all the problems.

what is witch hunting about them, do you not start fixing a problem from somewhere? Are you the best thing that has come out of your corner of the country, why are we always looking for loopholes in people's lives.

We are unserious and we are the joke of the world yet we accuse foreigners of putting bad labels on. I watch Zenith Bank wasting their money sponsoring Inside Africa on CNN and guess what, CNN hardly has anything good to report about Africa but violence, floods, malaria, polio, unemployment etc. even with Zenith Bank picking up the bills but I don't blame them, there are too many bad things happening around Africa and we obviously don't expect CNN to report the good news of Fashola beautifying the environment or tarring a couple of roads in 2009!

I'm also a bit worried that his past dialogues, other than those on Debt relief, have centred on politics, religion, ethicity, history etc rather than on Economics.
This to me is not impressive enough and I mention it in my article  but I think he has made up for this in other areas, especially with the industry wide acknowledgement taht he's Nigeria's economy's best brain in risk management.

how many people discuss econmics in Nigeria? our issues even as shown on Naira land are always on politics, religion, ethnicity and history so what's the big deal if Sanusi comments on that. How many of the bank chiefs even discusses anything apart form deposit targets. At least Sanusi discusses other things and is bold about it. What has Jim Ovia, Akingbola, Ibru, Elumelu etc contributed to and discourse in Nigeria?

Jarus,

I'm happy that you started this thread. I posted one of his artcles earlier on and have followed him a bit too and I've been impressed. You will never be able to convince some people that this guys is sound, NIgerians are always alike that, everything is to criticize people and bring them down.

Having said that, I'm not saying we should all turn to a Sanusi believer all of a sudden. we need to watch and be objective and more importantly contribute ideas that can help him succeed rather than hoping that we'ld continue to have the same useless banking system that has not helped the ordinary NIgerian. Sanusi has shown more character and consistence and I would queue behind such a man anyday rather than just telling me you are a Yoruba man or you are a christian (both groups I proudly lay claim to).

What has he achieved as a medical doctor and who is he trying to save with his OPC? an educated man that descends to such a level and sees every thing from the point of tribalism deserves no space in the public but this is Nigeria where like Charly Boy show, anything can happen and mediocrity is celebrated to high heavens.

Gosh !
When will people learn to stop insinuating things

Do you have idea what is being constructed by Waves Nigeria

For your info, that development when completed is going to be a 5-star luxury hotel/short-let apartments.

So where you got the idea of Oceanic bank getting a front to ''build'' for them and then ''rent'' it back to them beats me.

All Oceanic bank did was to finance the project which is going to be a very viable one when completed looking at the location of the property. Apart from the b-jay ''hotel'' on Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, there is no luxury hotel on that stretch of road, which is probably the reason why the bank is not too bothered about the non-performing nature of the loan. As soon as that hotel is completed, the investors will recoup their money.

If you have doubts about the viability of hotel business in a good location in Lagos State, Nigeria, go visit Eko Hotel, Sun International and Protea Hotel. Even the 1-star B-jays hotel is always fully booked thanks to Exxon Mobil that uses the place to accommodate their junior workers/contract staff when the need arises.

Good thing about that project is that it is still on-going, work is yet to stop and looking at the design of the structure (wave -like), it is going to be a major landmark on the Victoria Island axis.

People should always get their facts right and stop making unnecessary assumptions !

I won't want to argue with you especially if you have superior information. I was made to believe that waves building is going to house Oceanic's headqurters but we will wait and see.
To your other point as to viability of hotels, i can only add that just on that same Ozumba, OBA Otudeko is building his own hotel (probably at a slower pace) but will most like finish before waves. also, on Kofo Abayomi, there is another hotel springing up also the Chagoury family are expanding Eko Hotels. we still have Oriental very close to Mobil.

Also, we still need to ask who are the directors of waves and how did they get the loan? can i get a loan too to build a 5-star hotel?

Majority of Nairalanders are employees, most of which don't understand the impact of Sanusi's actions on businesses.
I wish I could put a little sense in these folks man! Teach dem just a little economics, so they can understand the correlation btw the loans thier employers obtain and the paychecks they get at the end of the month !

Sanusi's moves have practically collapsed the credit system in Nigeria and that would in turn have adverse effects on the economy.
Most banks are now on a loan recovery drive and all have now become risk averse.
When the the Financial crises hit America the result  was a credit freeze, and the US Government was sooo worried that it did everything in its power to re-ignite credit.
The impact of Sanusi's actions would start sometime around end of  October when  the country has exhausted July imports. Nigerians would start whinning, by which time it would be too late.
As you've stated, the sector that would be most affected is the importation of petroleum products. Enough fuel scarcity!

We are always eager to link our problems with that of the developed world when in many cases, it simply has nothing to do with it. America had credit crunch and one of the reasons was sub prime lending, lending to people who could not afford to pay back but these people at least had collateral (the houses) and when the houses being taken over became too much, things spiralled out of hand. how does that compare with giving Rahmaniya an unsecured loan to buy Petrol and diesel and he decides to woo the president's daughter with it? we simply have a situation in which guys who have no integrity and who should be selling spare parts or clothes decides to own a bank becomes he knows a few politicians and he decides to give depositors money to politicians who in turn donate it to PDP and he feels there is nothing wrong afterall he owns the banks forgetting that it's depositor's money he's throwing away.

You talk of the credit system in NIgeria, there was none in Nigeria before Sanusi, the only thing was that people who could bribe bankers got loans shikena, is that the credit system. You collect a loan of 200 million, you give like 10% to the facilitators. why do you think manufacturer's have been complaining about out banks.

these banks contribute very little to the real sector. imagine for a second how many houses/estates 747bn (that's bad loans from just five banks) can build in Nigeria, or how many refineries 747bn can build, or how many roads 747bn can build. Let the fuel scarcity start, maybe we can start talking about our refineries again afterall the likes of Zenon, rahmaniyya and co are those that profited from it.

You are right to be concerned about credit squeeze but we have to address this nonsense called banking before we start talking about other things and it is also true that banks alone cannot address the problem of infrastructure but maybe if they felt it more like the manufacturers, we can start talking about a common font.

I make bold to say that the we have just sectors working in Nigeria (Telecoms and Oil/Gas) and they are in the hands of foreigners and to a large extent they bring they don't depend on our banks.

we all know that we've always been in recession and even though the world recession may have exacerbated it, it is not the cause and we will see that as other countries start to come out of recession.

For those who think Sanusi's actions caused credit crunch, well some people have always felt the credit crunch. Those who got the loans were top bankers, politicians, fuel importers, stock brokers etc.

DayoCoker:

This story and the Vanguard "Northern Agenda" report should be thrown into a dustbin. The promoters of this rubbish back their fiction with the question, "How did Vanguard predict Sanusi's actions if there was no agenda? The answer is simple: they didn't. At the time that report was published Dayo Coker had already embarked on a campaign to expose the crooked activities of Erastus Akingbola who was taking the bank down a precipice. Ditto Madam Ibru, whose bank appeared on a list I circulated on my blog.

These 5 bank chiefs knew their banks were in trouble and they planted that story as a preemptive measure. Any serious journalist could have surmised this by watching the Expanded Discount Window. Unfortuntely, the editors felt that they had to support their biggest benefactors and promoted the dubious theory of "demarketing".

The organizers of the annual Vanguard Bankers Awards charge 5 million for a table of eight. We don't need a homily from Jarus to understand that Vanguard's campaign is solely motivated by filthy lucre.

Daily Independent's campaign against Olojede is motivated by revenge.

In a few days, I will release a definitive article on the Nigerian financial sector.

Till then, I remain,

Dayo Coker

Truth lies in the nuances.

This story against Sanusi can only be believed by the "very gullible".  Let me try and give them some education.
Sanusi alone cannot approve that kind of loan as an ED.
Banks usually have bad loans once in a while (or even often) but you have to be find out if they did enough risk analysis before granting such loans.
if the loan goes bad, have you made provisions for it and are you trying to recover such?
Also were those loans given to companies with links to the approvers?
These are some of the things you look at before attaching criminal intent to such.

In oceanic's case, the first time i saw the client board on their building at Ozumba, I noticed the client was Waves Nig. ltd and that was fishy to me. it just told me that someone wanted to build that place and rent it to Oceanic. To find out that Madam Ibru has links to waves Nig ltd and that the same company has non performing loans but building an edifice just beside your head office says a lot. To even find out that the same Waves took the loan without collateral is criminal not to talk of the fact that they have no history of any achievement.

As for Vanguard, they compromised themselves long ago. They have no integrity. Awards for cash and they are trying to defend their awards. Their Business editor Gabriel Omoh is afraid that there is no business this year becos of Sanusi. I think they should just set up shop as 419 if they can't make money from selling newspapers. what prediction are they talking about, something that was obvious to everyone. Sanusi never hid his intentions and we saw Akingbola running from pillar to post in his last days.

I urge Sanusi to forge onwithout being deterred by charlatans and if they are going to frustrate him he should just resign. I've said it Nigeria is like Jerusalem in the times of Jesus, they never know when their redeemer or redemption is around. we shoot down our saviours and celebrate people like James Ibori and complain that Nigeria is backward. We as a people have continued to reap what we sow.

Truth be told, I am tired of commenting on Nairaland!
Too many blind folks live here men! Seriously.

Thank you my brother. sometimes you wonder where these people are from and how come they are so dumb.

Ovia owns visafone and foreigners run it
Adenuga owns glo but foreigners manage it
Aerocontractors is run by foreigners
Dangote companies are run by foreigners

what does that tell you? these guys call the foreigners to run their businesses so why can't the CBN governor allow them to come run some banks here.

Some of you would rather be jobless here and be cleaners is London. these guys come, they provide jobs, capitals, processes and wealth starts spreading. some people will learn and set up theirs rather than having these sham banks.

Everyone who had followed events in the banking sector pre-consolidation knows that Atedo Peterside put up a strong fight against the consolidation policy since it was going to erode one man ownership of banks.

@ Jarus

U have been jumping from one thread to the other promoting sanusi and his actions but you have not been able to give us an answer as to why every action sanusi has taken so far is in tandem with what Vanguard reported five months ago and more than two months before Sanusi was appointed (maybe Vanguard now has Primate Olabayo as a reporter). untill you provide an answer to the above, I will never take your view on the babking crisis serious. I'm even begining to suspect you to be a PA to sanusi!!

@Jarus

I think you should just leave these people alone. You cannot convince some Nigerians that these MDs are crooks even with facts. The Vanguard report being talked about is not a prophecy but what every body knew Sanusi will do if he becomes MD and they used vanguard reporter Gabriel Omoh as one of the guys that will do the hatchet job yet they failed but they won't give up. These crooks bribed those in the Presidency to support Soludo's second term that at a time those guys had to ask where the money was coming from. sources say this money was up to 2.5bn in bribes. By the way, for anyone who believes Nigerian papers hook line and sinker, the truth is that most stories are paid stories even those tagged "investigative journalism". Personally I don't see vanguard as a genuine newspaper.

If they knew Sanusi was coming after them why didn't they sit up.

I still shudder how foolish we are as Nigerians. we always look at everything from a conspiracy theory and can hardly analyse and dissect issues in a sensible way. is it any surprise that we dumped colonialism by the white for colonialism by the elites and the rich.

I know friends and worshippers of Akingbola and Ibru can't just believe that their gods are not invincible afterall.

I'm not a friend of Atedo but he willingly relinquished his bank to Stanbic while Akingbola, Ibru chose to sit as MD of dying banks.
Politics / Re: Atedo Peterside Knocks Out Soludo by jacobs123(m): 2:23pm On Aug 29, 2009
The problem we have with most of our institutions in Nigeria is lack of continuity.

you are right but in some cases like the present one you just can't continue hiding the fact these banks have problems. even bankers were complaining about this margin loan and liquidity issues. by the way, does any one remember Sanusi's comment that these problematic banks are one the causes of high interest rates. how does high interest rate help me and you?

Each newly appointed official would not see anything good in policy and approach of his predecessor but to look for ways and manners to discredit and rubbish whatever programme that was in place. Lamido Sanusi was part of the banking industry in Nigeria while Soludo was Governor. Didn't Sanusi have the right to air his opinion about what was going on in the industry then? Why wait till he became Governor before blowing the lid and exposing these toxic loans? I bet he knew what was going on then.

Sanusi's opinion was well known in the banking world and they tried everything to make sure he didn't become CBN Governor. People aired their opinion like Atedo alluded to but Soludo ran the CBN like a czar. I don't exactly have problems with running it as a czar especially in a country like Nigeria but you also have to take responsibility for the s, t that comes after Why do you think people like Gabriel Omoh of the VANGUARD newspaper have been running a smear campaign on him since March.

Mind you, I really support what he was doing about the five banks but that doesn't mean that Soludo should be pacified completely. To advance the financial standing of this country among the international community the statement Atedo Peterside was making in the London Financial District will not help. You cannot just go the outside world to wash your dirty clothes. What he should be doing is to give credit to where credit belongs by ascertaining the benefits and achievements of Soludo's banking consolidations that has given some confidence to the capital base standings of our banking institutions . He should also be assuring the international community that we have just got another competent risk manager to continue where Soludo stopped. Financial world is a very sensitive world, any unguided utterances could spell a doom for Nigeria.

I agree that Atedo should have praised Soludo a bit 'cos I think he was a man for his time but that doesn't mean he lied against him. he can as well choose not to praise him. by the way, you talk of the international community like they are some kind of novice, they know the whole story of what is going on in the banks. you think people will just bring their money based on what you Nigerians say. I don't agree that he washed any dirty linen in public, did he lie at any time or tell us what we didn't know. Soludo was heavily compromised and it was obvious to every one. he didn't behave like a regulator in any way after the consolidation but was always chummy with these crooks. Banking is all about conservatism, it's people's money not your money.

Our Central Bank Governors whether past or present should be portrayed as very competent people and not as morons

This is the same attitude that keeps us where we are. when people are morons let's tell them what they are. George Bush was a slowpoke, did we not know or hear about it from Americans? by the way, Soludo was not a slowpoke but character wise, i won't advise any young man/woman to look up to him.

The whole discourse about Sanusi's action has gotten so sentimental that we've lost sight of the issues. if we give the banks to foreigners, what's the big deal about it, does any one really think NIgeria is in control of it's destiny. it's when some people are losing out that we bring sentiments. if the northerners buy the banks, what is the problem with that, how has the bank helped the south. if the banks are owned by northerners, they still have to employ competent nigerians or they will be out of business.

meanwhile there is another issue brewing in the civil service and I think Nigerians have to start paying attention to Oransoye's reform which the SGF is trying to sabotage. we need to focus on issues in Nigeria and forget all these big men that turn their wars into our own world wars.

Oga why are we talking as if we are not  nigerians, so because its Atedo peterside he cannot be faulted? So the statement he just made you think will strenghten the confidence of foreigners in our banking system abi?

london sch of economics my foot. Is Atedo  more intelligent/schooled than Ebitimi Banigo(the godfather of banking) , havard trained guru, formost investment banker that ran All states trust bank aground?

All the investment banking talk by IBTC largely had to do with margin trading in the stock market .  When others got the trick , their(ibtc) profits thinned out massively , all the rest is history.

We have seen people like rufus giwa that was generally accepted as an  exceptional leader/industrialist until the veil was lifted and he left the scene in shame.

So oga I will appraise everyone's statement objectively and not based on  sentiments.

I guess Sanusi's critics can refer to Atedo's comment as the South South Agenda.

Oga, this is not about education but character. Character is something many Nigerians do not understand. Atedo objected to the consolidation based on facts, he brought it to the open. he was over ruled by Soludo, went ahead with merging with Chartered. while other CEOs were thinking of how to become gods and displaying obscene wealth, he stayed true to his cause, merged with Stanbic which brought in capital, processes etc. ask your banker friends if they won't like to work for Stanbic.

back to the issues,we shouldn't follow Sanusi like mumu but let's be objective. I don't see why Sanusi cannot go to london for investors. that's the world's financial center. and let's face it, there are no rich men in Nigeria. they are crooks that made money from stealing our oil wealth or bank debtor's. so who are the Nigerians that will buy the bank, is it Dangote, Otedola, Ovia etc?

@JACOBS123,what are u to Mr.Sanusi?you defend him so astutely that one begins to wonder if u have a filial connection to him or are u staff of CBN on PR?.

You may find it hard to believe but I'm just a very interested observer. I was a banker but I've since moved on. I'm just a "busy body" Engineer.
suffice it to say however that there's so much ignorance and sentiments being displayed that I feel that a few of us should be objective and let people see reasons.

The Bank CEO's knew what was coming, they did all they could to stop Sanusi from becoming CBN governor (why was that). The guy has been consistent, they knew what he stood for and they didn't want it.

It's like Pat Utomi becoming President, you know what to expect!

We need to help ourself in this country and stop supporting the crooks and be objective too in our analysis.

I might as well add that I do not understand how the EFCC is handling this issue but you can blame Sanusi for that. It's like a Policeman stopping you and you have no particulars, you just put your self in trouble. EFCC has seen a good opportunity.
