Bonga4: Beats me why anyone would choose to slave away in a foreign land just to enjoy the amenities of light, water, etc. I know it's a challenge living in Nigeria but those who are living abroad are not finding it easy either Please define slavery, the last time i checked someone making 70k annually and does not pay rent but owns is house, pays all his bill on time, lives and feeds comfortably, and is not subject to any form or torture or excessive hard work was not part of the content of slavery. The main problem with blacks is that we are so inferior and feel uncomfortable, and as a result blame the white people for their misfortune. Come on you have got yo move ahead men. slav·er·ies 1. The state of one bound in servitude as the property of a slaveholder or household. 2. a. The practice of owning slaves. b. A mode of production in which slaves constitute the principal work force. 3. 735 i: You have spoken well, but all you have mentioned might be a barrier to migrating, but if you are useful to an organization, no corporation will use the above mentioned as an excuse to maximize shareholders wealth. If you are valuable the rest is history. HR in the US is nothing close to HR in Nigeria. when they see a talent they recognize it, doesn't matter if you are yellow green or orange. Companies can be sued and pay high fine if they do such. And trust me the least thing you want to do as a firm is get on the bad side of the government. i presently intern for the No 1 fortune 500 company and you will be amazed how many africans, Chinese and indians work with me and all earn above 65k. They have all have the qualities you mentioned. I am talking from a professional stand point of view not menial jobs. The one area that i know most companies are deviating from is hiring people that would require sponsorship not basically because of the cost but other resources that are tied up to this process with HR. Please i am referring to professional jobs here not menial hourly jobs. I am not saying this factors do not decrease ones chances, but Just add value and know what you are doing you will definitely get a good job. Although my accent is not that strong, but i was interviewed with other white american student at least 6 that i know of and i got the internship position. 2 Likes |

ayd91: All this pessimistic comments about Nigeria and how all staying here are doomed to fail really got me depressed. Nobody is downcasting Nigeria or saying everybody there is doom. Afterall even those of us in the US still have one or two family there. The point is if you have the means or opportunity to travel give it a shot if you like. Simple! 2 Likes |

andyzoga: Success is not a native of any country. . . Wherever you are, be prayerful and work smart. Then, good success will be yours. Why strive to buy a 2013 car when a 1995 car works perfectly. Wake up to the reality dude. If an oppurtunity is given then it should be taken if the oppurtunity cost is lower. |

Been a long time I came to this thread. Semester is finally over. Wishing you all success as you go for your interviews. Just believe in God if he says yes no one can say no. Please take time to fill your form properly. There is a section that ask some questions about some organization you had joined in the past. Put organization that relate to your course of study. Use only a school official as your contact in the US nobody else. Tell a good story in your application that is consistent. When asked a question at the interview use body languages to explain yourself it shows the degree of passion you have. Try as much as possibke to get a form of scholarship. Schools only give money to people that are exceptional. And always remember your best tie to Nigeria is coming back to fix a problem. Fixing the criminaal justice system if you are going to law school, putting an end to boko haram if you are doing something related to that. Etc. I keep telling people to always say a intend to come back to join the Nigerian Armed forces. Thats a place you can gain technical skill and also have a positive impact on your country. And there is this thing between the US and and Military veterans/active duty military officers. They are treated so exceptionally. Those living here know what I mean. These are just tips nothing more All the best guys. 1 Like |

Justwise baba long time no see. Nice answer to the guythat went to UK and said he would not think of selling anything. First of all what visa do you have, what's your skillset, educational background. I will personaly not recommend selling your property to go the UK because of the reduced oppurtunity and regulations. You can't expect to have a Nigerian degree and go to the Uk and make billions. You must be kidding me. I have git freinds that graduated from UK universities and do not have jobs. On the contrary US is so different. God bless America! It is the land of oppurtunities. There is a black race, there is an hispanic race and Asian race, an there are are several regulations that favour minorities such as the affirmative action. We Africans that come to the US just tap from such regulation not to add that hardwork pays real time. I havr no single friend that came here to study that did nit get a good job afterwards.I guess it all depends on your definiton of hardwork. Most UK laws favout citizens and not immigrants while a lot of US laws favour immigrant.and I tell you if you work hard and you have a better chance of getting a job than a US citizen. I am can testify to that. Moreover look at the long term benefits living in a developed country can have on your unborn child. That's a good gift as you open him yo different oppurtunity. So yes I will recommend sellibg properties and coming to the US if you are not coming on a visiting visa. Becausr you barely can get SSN and DL with that. 9 Likes |
Thanks peeps. Interview was yesterday @ the Lagos Embassy with a black American guy. Here's how it went: Can't even remember if I greeted him. VO: Please pass your documents Me: Passed my docs (Passport, I-20, Admission letter, etc) VO: What course are you going to study? Me: Business administration and Management VO: Why did you choose Bleep University? Me: Spoke about the courses and how each of those courses can help achieve my overall career objective here in Nigeria VO: How many schools did you apply to? Me: I said "three" and mentioned them VO: Why did you choose this school over the two? Me: Re-iterated the answers I gave to the first question VO: Did you write GMAT? Me: Yes, I passed my score sheet (he looked through and passed it back) VO: Who's paying for your education? Me: My mum VO: What does she do? Me: I explained VO: What do you do presently? Me: I work with a company (mentioned the name) as an associate in the xyz unit All the while, he was typing. When he finished, he gave me a white collection form and said "Your visa has been approved, pick it up @ ikeja on..." (didn't hear the guy after that) That was the end of the interview. The only supporting document he requested was my GMAT score report. All glory to God[/quote Na so i won make he dey go for here abeg, good news all the way. Congrats bruv, Welcome to America the land of opportunities! |

Better-person: Not a good day for you at all, this is where we talk about the luck factor thing, cus people that did less rehearsals and nairaland thing would probably get their visa by that same woman. You did great trust me it wasn't your fault, but you should have said you applied to more than one school, and taken a standardized test other than TOEFL. Reapply and pray for favor this time. For the most part she cant interview you again, so you are over with her drama. Wishing all spring applicants the very best of God and deeverick too! you shall testify by His grace. |
Please you guys have been complaining that we are not posting, the reason i stop is that no one want to help again, just because some of you that have gotten your VISA, you have forgotten that you started like this, But that God for the likes of Imperioux, dr_dolittle, kpoli, king01,justwise, despite their study they still find the time to come and solve some problems, May God bless you all that have been trying to carry us along, please this are the issue bothering me, Even if we are going to the part 4, i will need a 100% advice there too, please you guy should not fail to answer this question? must read: In my first DS-160 Form that i filled, before the interview, instead of putting parent as sponsor, i put self and also i use my friend address, but when i called the embassy, they told me to fill a new DS-160 from, so i filled it and made those correction, could it be the reason the VO was just typing and typing and gave me the white slip I will also be going soon, but in my last DS-160, I did not put that i have graduated o, it was during the interview that i told the VO That i have a first degree, Also in my last ds-160 i put not employed because i was working for my Dad, but if put it now, will it make any difference considering the fact that my dad do not pay me through but cheque, also i have a Non-registered business in Nigeria, should i put all this in my New DS-160 Form, why am asking all this question, i want to show a strong tie to Nigeria Please what do you advice my on this bothering question Abuja embassy is too cold, almost shaking inside, what should i do? What if the VO ask me that You already have a first degree, why going for a first degree? This question is failing most of us that have gone before to interview before what if the VO said 'why do u want to change career? When Did you finish high school? What have you been doing? Please should i add those changes in my new DS-160 Form[/quote My brother, Avoid complicating your case too much, too many changes in an application indicates something fishy. you should have written all this initially, but let us get down to the point. Include any changes you want to include in your new form and have paperwork to justify it. For instance if the VO ask :do you have a first degree, say yes at the same time reaching for your diploma. If asked: do you have a working experience? Say yes at the same time reach for a letter of introduction (multitasking). Use body gestures, it's normally a non conscious way of expression, act it on a regular basis before your interview so you can express yourself better. Having a degree and going for another degree doesn't decrease your chances in any way. They are Americans not Africans. Many professionals here have multiple first degree or masters degree. They do this if they believe a previous curriculum wasn't efficient. So you can use that as an excuse. Simply say your curriculum from Nigeria does not put you in the best position to enroll for grad studies. In a nutshell you believe you are not fully toweled for grad school. The part of changing career I need to know from what to what to advise accordingly. However have a good explanation if its too distinct. Prepare yourself maintain eye contact and understand that whatever is on that computer is against you and the only thing or person that can convince the VO is you. This will give you a better motivation. At all: for those that have not had any encounter with the US embassy before be sure to carefully fill out your Ds form properly. That information remains in the database and can work against you anytime, even when you want to renew your visa in the states. I still have a copy of mine so I don't forget any details should I have to encounter department of states in the nearest future. Wishing all spring applicants the best of God and deeverick too Cheers 1 Like |

deevick246: I need all the inputs I can get on this issue. What is the likelihood of securing a F1 Visa with a Provisional admission? Here is more information why the PA was offered. The PA was offered because the Graduate School requires a 3.0 GPA for a Regular Admission but a 2.9. GPA was presented and that was why the Provisional Admission was offered. This School in question is ranked high in the list of school's offering the programme of study. I need anyone who got F1 Visa with PA or anyone with a useful information to drop a line or two. It all depends on the Vo and the way you approach him. If he is positive you will survive through he will approve it. Show passion for your intended course. If he is more than confident that you will meet that condition, then he will issue your visa. All the best my man! |

Trust me you dont need TOEFL you have GRE, I suppose you are going for Grad school. You are fine. i went with only GRE, as a matter of fact the VO will ask for GRE once its a Grad application. Nevertheless go with whatever document you feel will present your case better, but you will be fine with just GRE. Wish you success! franklynx: pls,housemates.. i just received my I-20 for Spring 2013 for MSc.in Pet.Eng.. I have since paid and got my TOEFL Confirmation ticket but cud not write it on Oct.6,2012 in a P/H centre because of I.D problem( i.e i did not present my international passport as a means of I.D hence i was not allowed 2 take d TOEFL..) Anthonymighty: Sorry for the misconception, i meant the DS 160 form, alot on my mind here. Let everything on that form make proper sense. dont live too many gaps between your educational qualification and work experience. There is a part of the form that says if you have ever worked for a professional non profit organization, put something there that relates to your course of study, dont leave it blank, If you are not currently employed, look for a related company and put it there, if fact put past(NYSC) and current employer. Remember to always make it related to your past and future studies. Contact in USA, should be a school Offiical, no one else. Please nobody should be discouraged about anything, like undergraduate dont get a visa or something, i always tot i liked that too but its a wrong thinking. Naomi is on this thread, had a bachelors degree and was given a visa for another bachelors degree(tho its 2 years). Another classmate of mine in Nigeria had a pretty low cgpa, and was given a visa to study another bachelors degree. Just make a good application, and convince the VO that you intend to study, thats all in my opinion. The interview might not be a reliable means of issueing a visa, but they make a decision for the most part. Also if you are going for a course related to military like engineering, medicine, psychology or what have you, you can tell the VO that you intend joining the Nigerian Military on completion of your studies and putting an end to this boko haram menace. Thats VERY GOOD TIE. worked for me despite that fact that i have 3 siblings in the states. All the best and Good luck to Spring Applicants. |

Just Passing by. Wishing everyone applying for visa come fall success, especially my man deeverick, you shall testify. For those applying to community college or what have you, sincerely i used to think that the school you apply to can decrease your chances of getting a visa but thats a big lie. I know of more than 5 different people that applied to a community college this year and currently in the US. As a matter of fact i was on a flight with one of them he applied to a community college in Vegas. I sincerely do not know the criteria for a visa, but in my own opinion, community college is not what everyone says it is here. I applied to a private school in Ohio that nobody knows not even the VO and i was given my visa. My 2 cents pls complete your DS 190 form in a very professional and coordinated manner, cus thats all they gat on you. I hate to say this but luck also comes into play. A new Nigerian student joined me in my school early this week and trust me when i say this, if this guy could get a visa, all nairaland should also get one. May the good Lord guide your steps and lead you the the right VO that will issue your visa My 2 cent. For those currently in the US pls before yo make any serious crucial decision, call your relative in the US or a nairalander. Knowledge is power. I am adjusting very fine so far because i have a brother and a sister down here. All is well that ends well, the struggle is not over. US is another set of struggle, trust me because the people here are totally different, or maybe its just state, dont know. 3 Likes |

ik.swiss: It really depends on what you want to do. But let me quote from the advice i had from my siblings here as a matter of fact my brother finished from Morgan and presently works in the US. There is something about Morgan and scholarship. I think they give it alot especially to black students, and off course there are a lot of nigerians there too. It really depends on what you want to do and details of your admission in terms of funding. i dont know much about East Bay, but Morgan i know very well. So make up your mind based on that. |

Ovap: House pls help me out.My father is into quarry and truck biz(we have quarry and tippers),he's d one sponsoring me. I'm his P.A since I finishd my Nysc in 2010. As mech engr,i'm goin 4project management in master's level.Pls house how can i defend myself here? (2) Can I say my father is a contractor or wat would i say? (3) please, what are d relationshp of d these? Mechanical engineer(B.Eng) into father's P.A goin 4project management. My interview is soonest, thnx One experience i have had with the Us embassy is that try as much as possible to always tell a good story, the Vo doesnt have much time to sit on your case. He has to make a decision for the better part. Get a family friend or someone that owns or runs a engineering coy, have him write a letter for you that you worked there for a while, if asked by the Vo for pay slip, you could say it was a volunteered job or you were just given transport and feeding allowance. Do your research on the nature of the mechanical job should in case the Vo ask you of your job responsibilities ( and please make this very realistic). Just tell a good connecting story, and you'll be good. |

dnpasion: House I beg I will like to know if nipost is good enough to help deliver some docs. I need for my admission process to the school I'm applying to and does anyone know how long it do normally take them to make a delivery. Thanks\ It depends on what time you have left to meet your deadline. I sometime sent a document via Nipost to Canada and i registered it and paid about 800-1000k and it arrived Canada in about 10-15 dayz, so if this is ok by you, then you're good. But please register it. |

Ollydon: Hello guys, i wanna send my documents to my school..can i send some photocopies? I cant leave some original documents! Will this affect their admission desicion? Thanks in advance I don't understand what documents you want to send. If its your transcript, simply request from your school, an official copy and send to your proposed school. You can always have access to your transcript from your institution here in Nigeria. Test scores are usually sent directly from the test Coy. so you good. But like i said it depends on your school. My school didn't ask for an official transcript before i got admission as a matter of fact i sent just a scanned copy, so different schools different rules. Some will not even accept transcript, but will tell you to evaluate it first. I just submitted the official one today in person. So you Good. |
