Car Talk / Re: Did You Know? (Car Facts) by kollinz003(m): 1:11pm On Apr 22, 2016
Hello Moderator, I would like your advice, please. I intend buying a car soon and I am considering a Nissan Maxima, 2004. I have seen one and intend to go view it over the weekend. Please kindly advice me on the Nissan Maxima and suitable service centers in Lagos, where I can service it, if I decide to buy one. Many thanks for this. Cheers

Hi All,

Thought I'd create a thread where we can share car knowledge based on experience or just plain benefit of information.

Feel free to add any tip you think most people will not know.

• The 2013 Honda accord will be the first accord with CVT transmission (similar to the Murano). This means the usual auto shifting feel will be missing and also a more expensive transmission. If you plan on buying this vehicle from an independent dealer, bear in mind you will have no warranty on the transmission if something goes wrong and note that CVTs are not repairable when damaged internally. I would strongly advice that a vehicle like this is only purchased from an accredited dealer
• The 2013 Rav 4 requires synthetic engine oil (0w 20 or 5w20) specifically and usage of any other engine oil grade voids the warranty and will damage the engine. Typically also, this means that if you buy one today, the earliest time you should be servicing it (oil change) is December 2014 or 7500miles
• If you must buy a Murano, avoid specially the 03-04 models with AWD. Apart from CVT issues, the transfer case fails prematurely starting with a leak. It is an expensive repair and just another reason to avoid the Murano.
• If you have an 05-12 Pathfinder or Xterra, go through this thread https://www.nairaland.com/991254/own-nissan-pathfinder-xterra-05-11
• The 03-07 Mazda 6 is a good looking car but has an extremely small turning radius which makes it annoying to drive especially in a city like Lagos. If you are a sharp driver, you will not like this

If I remember anything else I will update.

Cheers

Are you intending to immigrate to Canada and live for a while, or just try to get a Canadian work permit from the UK?

Yes, I am intending to immigrate to Canada, live and work there for a while. But I want to do so from the UK after my studies.

Good afternoon Justwise.
I am starting studies in the UK in September this year. After my studies I intend relocating to The US to "hustle" for a while. What are the chances of applying for a visa to Canada and working there for a while, from the UK without necessarily coming back to Nigeria first? Since I will be a student visitor in the UK, are there restrictions on whether I can apply for a visa and relocate to Canada straight from the UK? I will need your advice please. Please I have asked this question on the Canada Thread with respect to Canada - I want to compare both procedures and make a better and informed choice. Thank you.

justwise:

Off campus is cheaper and less restrictive. School accommodation is always more expensive.

Thank you, Justwise, I'll put that into consideration.

honey86: I don't know anything about the school. Why don't you use guardian UK university ranking in relation to your course. Why I said this is that, schools have reputation for being the best in a particular subject area. for example imperial college is revered when it cones to their engineering faculty same with my school, university if Manchester.I hope I made sense
Oh sure, you made a lot of sense. Thank you very much.

honey86: Law is a very hard profession to break onto in the UK. Don't go with the assumption that you would get a job here after your masters. Even those who schooled here are struggling to get a job placement. The law profession in the UK is closely knitted, not like medicine, and they hardly admit new pple into their society.
Thanks for the info Honey86. However in your candid opinion would you advice I go for Swansea?

please, I need to know - What is the RATING, not RANKING, of Swansea university in the UK - I am a graduate of law in Nigeria, with plans to further my education in the UK for my second degree and I recently got admission to study for my masters in law at Swansea University. Having regards to the standards placed on some schools, kindly inundate me on how high Swansea University is rated in the UK. Not necessarily university ranking, but the actual rating of Swansea University in the UK. I really need this info to help me know whether I should chose another school that is rated higher or stick with them since their fees are quite affordable compared to other schools. Thank you.

I'll be heading to the UK (Wales) soon for my masters degree soon. I however plan to relocate/visit the USA or Canada as I am completing my studies in the UK. Would I be allowed to apply for a visa from the UK for this purpose or would I have to come back to Nigeria first? Please I need your advice. Thanks.
