naijaboy99: To be honest, the only reason I'm replying this is to let some people who are planning to travel know they shouldn't drop their plans just because of your negativity and naivety. Typically, I just ignore such ignorance. Many others doing well abroad have tried to educate you here but you are hell-bent on not listening, so this reply isn't for you! Your incessant noise that not a lot of Nigerians can save $30 daily is just childish and lacks basis. My wife is a known fashion designer and so we have loads of traffic in our house, plus she gets to visit homes. You'd be surprised how many people are living large! You think people have time to come here and be arguing how much they make with you? Those you'd see online are those complaining because they have refused to do what is required to settle them in well in these climes. Before you say what about we ourselves, believe me...I'm doing well, extremely well enough that I do save that $30 multiplied by 10 daily (ofcourse done bi-weekly). And that's not bringing my wife's business earning into play. Is it just me? No! I have people who landed recently under my care and they earn well enough to make your mouth water. Friends, colleagues etc too. Na who never reach another person farm go say na hin papa farm big pass. Naysayers like you are the reason people travel with the mind of doing survival jobs all their lives. Is it easy here? No..but it's not anywhere else too. However, anything and everything is possible and doable if you do the needful. Plan your japa settlement plan well, research which fields are lucrative and how to maximize your earnings. People are doing well in the western world! And before you think of asking me to do any breakdown for you or show you any evidence, I should just tell you now that I won't go down that lane with you. If you do come back to say all these is a lie, THEN LET'S AGREE IT'S A LIE!! You believing me or not believing no go change one single thing! I just hope those reading with the mind of expanding their capacity just know it is possible and doable...and many others are already living that reality! 18 Likes 1 Share |

hor=smatt1711 post=110447875]I will give you the advice I will give myself if I can reverse back to your age 1) Enrol into any higher instution preferably a University, Choose a course that won't be demanding like Sociology or Education courses 2) still engage in your music career, make friends, befriends music students, visit campus music facilities and learn one or 2 3) find other students with like mind, you can form a band group, attend campus competition, drop campus singles, Use campus radio station. 4) you just said you don't have money, campus will help your career with least available capital, it will give you good friendships and networking and finally it will give you a degree just in case... Because later in life you will realize that as you de reason am now no be so E be.... [/quote] If this isn't wisdom, I don't know what else would qualify to be called by that name. However, I can bet op won't listen. The music wey dey him mind no go allow. 1 Like |

Eggovic: Well, to be honest there are a million and one ways to get to success and advices have to be customized to the particular situation of the seeker. I would just say be very selective of the company you keep when you land, it would determine if you would be successful or not (assuming part of your definition of success is being financially comfortable). For example, I studied mechanical engineering in Nigeria and when I landed, I took a diploma course called Welding Engineering Technology. It prepared me for being a quality control personnel and I would say it's a very lucrative career for someone who is smart and pays great attention to tiny details. You could end up being in QC, NDT, engineering among other paths. Someone in the medical line could look into a course like Sonography. Someone in management might look into business analytics. I mean, there are loads of courses out there that are lucrative but require sacrifice to get into. In my case, I basically sacrificed my first two years here (when people we landed together were buying houses and new cars) but I'm reaping the results now. One thing is, if the foundation is faulty here and you look for shortcuts, you would definitely lose out at the end. Take the pain to research a career that has growth paths, sacrifice everything to study it right, get the right certifications....and you'd be on the path to success. How long person go take dey do low paying jobs? After some years, person go still dey the same level. This obodo oyinbo, you gats wise up. I know it's hard because your mates will be buying new flashy cars on loans and living big while you look like a sufferhead...but the difference will show in five years! And for those still outside Canada, don't let any agent scam you with any yeye story. Canada is freaking hard to get into and 99.9% of those people don't have what it takes. Even we wey dey here no sabi way in again since Express Entry became another story. Don't let any agent use your money to drink tea with, jump online and research student routes yourself. It might take me time to reply any comments on this so please bear with me. 6 Likes 1 Share |

Owen247: I would advice you to shine your beacon on Non-destructive testing or being a welding inspector. Your knowledge of materials would be better put to use there and if you can acquire the right tickets, you would go far. You have basic knowledge of welding and that, combined with your knowledge of metallurgy would really help you. I do basically all types of welding but would pick inspection over welding any day. There's a career path for you too, you could move into more indepth quality control and maybe one day, find yourself in a Quality Assurance role. |

Wisdomlinus: Call me when you're done so I can do VT on that, flag for NDE and do weld mapping ![]() |

Op, if you hear bakery work in Canada...run ![]() I have a million things I really would have liked to type, maybe I'd modify this post later but this one thing I'd say now, don't get sucked into the survival job mentality here. Go back to school please! Research on courses that are viable and key in without wasting time. There are hidden treasure courses that would catapult you to living the good life if you discover them, please do due diligence and find a way to start as soon as possible. Just my two cents sha...and btw, there are other places in Canada asides Ontario (I won't want people to attack me, so I wouldn't go deep with this) 15 Likes |

In all honesty, this temperature is killing. Everywhere is just boiling. The smallest physical effort just wears one down so fast. Before you shout that it's hotter than that in Maiduguri, think of the fact that it's a change from -35°C to 35°C (around 70°C) compared to the ~20°C maximum change experienced in Naija. That's the part that makes it hard ![]() 4 Likes 2 Shares |

Pee2Jay9: I would really advice against this. I don't know why you need two credit cards but I would generally say for a newcomer, it's a bad idea. You need to understand the credit system first, discipline yourself around repayments and learn to live within your means in this 'finance this, finance that' world. You see this country, it's easy to fall into debt. If you manage your money well and live within your means, you should be very fine with a card. It's so nice coming back to this thread and seeing it's still as helpful and active as it was before. Kudos to the senior men (and women) keeping it alive! 4 Likes |

You have detailed information already from previous posts but just to reiterate, you would find it much easier than your fear right now, trust me ![]() If in doubt, ask the officials. Na once person dey do mugu, after you don do JJC the first time, you go become boss when you wan fly next time. Better to ask and save yourself the stress of missing your flight. 1 Like |

Kranediggy: I'm in Canada and would answer based on what CAD would get you in Canada (you can use the same scenario for the US)...and I would answer with examples. 1. You would live comfortable with 2000-3000CAD in Canada, would you see anyone living with N2000 in a month in Nigeria? 2. An averagely modest 2-3bedroom house in my city would cost around 400,000CAD. Can you build a house for N400,000 in Nigeria? 3. A used low-milage 2010 Toyota Camry would go for around 6000CAD, can you get that for N6000 in Nigeria? I'm just trying to show you the absurdity of saying N1mil in Nigeria has same value as $1mil in US or Canada. $1mil will get you a house, cars, set you up for a business, afford you some sorta luxury...with change, in America. N1mil wont even get you a decent car in Nigeria. I usually dont comment on Nairaland anymore but I just thought it might help steer your discussion with your friend in a positive direction, the question seems to come from a place of decision making 5 Likes |

lexy2014: When people say things like the richest Nigerians live in Nigeria, I ask them how many of the average Nigerians eventually get to be part of those 'richest' ones? It's like a circle that revolves around itself, few can break in. Where would the average Nigerian get the opportunity, job, contract etc that would make them break into that circle of the rich? If those of us that japa have the political or social wherewithal, we probably would stay...but since we dont and we would not involve ourselves in crime to get in, we left for places where we have fairly equal playing field to be the best we can be. 8 Likes |
