Nairaland / General / Don’t Touch The Sultan: Muric Tells Sokoto Governor by mdsne(m): 6:05pm On Jun 24
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has expressed concern over the sour relationship between the governor and the Sultan of Sokoto as well as the rumour of impending dethronement of the Sultan.

This is coming on the heel of the deposition 15 traditional rulers by the governor recently.

According to the human rights organization, Nigerian Muslims reject any thought of deposition of the Sultan.

MURIC’s position was articulated in a press statement issued on Monday, 24th June, 2024 by its Founder and Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

He said:

“The governor of Sokoto State, Ahmed Aliyu, deposed 15 traditional rulers on 23rd April 2024. That was two months ago.

“However, feelers in circulation indicate that the governor may descend on the Sultan of Sokoto any moment from now using any of the flimsy excuses used to dethrone the 15 traditional rulers whom he removed earlier.

“MURIC advises the governor to look before he leaps. The Sultan’s stool is not only traditional. It is also religious. In the same vein, his jurisdiction goes beyond Sokoto. It covers the whole of Nigeria. He is the spiritual head of all Nigerian Muslims.

“Therefore, any governor who tampers with the stool of the Sultan will have Nigerian Muslims to reckon with because the Sultan combines the office of the Sultan of Sokoto and that of the President General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).

“Governor Ahmed Aliyu should not force Nigerian Muslims to take a drastically revolutionary measure. Having a traditional ruler as leader has been a condition Nigerian Muslims accepted a long time ago as a necessary weakness in the structure which they have to live with.

“A military governor, Colonel Yakubu Muazu, exposed this soft underbelly when he deposed Sultan Ibrahim Dasuki on 20th April, 1996. Nigerian Muslims will be forced to make a hard decision if Sokoto governors continue to diminish the authority of the Sultan.

“For the avoidance of any doubts, Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar is not only the Sultan of Sokoto but the Sultan of the Nigerian people. His performance and style of leadership have warmed him into the hearts of Nigerians.

“Nigerian Muslims North and South of the country may be constrained to pick Islamic scholars only as President General of the NSCIA and overall leader of Nigerian Muslims. It will be farewell to the leadership of traditional rulers over the NSCIA and an irreversible departure from Sokoto’s priviledged leadership position. But history will not be kind to Colonel Yakubu Muazu and Ahmed Aliyu for ruining the chances of Sokoto.

“That will make it impossible for any governor to harass or intimidate the leader of Nigerian Muslims. The power and influence of governors over traditional rulers have become absolute and totalitarian in recent time. Nigerian Muslims must be given space to breathe some air of freedom like all other associations.

“Once is happenstance, twice is a coincidence, the third time is enemy action. If the deposition of a Sultan and NSCIA leader happens a second time, Nigerian Muslims will not allow the embarrassment to happen a third time.

“MURIC reiterates its call on the Sokoto State House of Assembly to either repeal or review the state’s chieftaincy laws by adding the phrase ‘except the Sultan of Sokoto’ to Section 6, Cap 26 of the Laws of Northern Nigeria which empowers the state governor to depose the emirs including the Sultan.

“We urge Northern elites and Islamic scholars based in the North to intervene before it is too late. This is the time to lobby the Sokoto State House of Assembly and the governor himself. If the chieftaincy laws of Kano State can be repealed within 24 hours, nothing stops that of Sokoto State from being reviewed in favour of immunity for the office of the Sultan in a single day to save Nigerian Muslims from humongous embarrassment.

“It is arbitrary, irrational and condescending for a state governor to possess the power to dethrone the leader of all Muslims in Nigeria when even an ordinary chairman of a local government cannot sack the president of a campus students union. It is unacceptable. Enough is enough.

“In the same manner, it is tactless, reckless, myopic and senselessly audacious for any governor of Sokoto State who has the power to remove the Sultan of Sokoto and head of all Nigerian Muslims to actually use that power. Well, once bitten, twice shy. Nigerian Muslims travelled this road once, under military rule. We will not ply the same road again.”

While the impoverished masses are breaking each other's heads and hating each other because of ethnic, religious and political orientations, these guys are consolidating and deciding which of their cronies to send out to control government for them.

I hope one day, people who create enemies for themselves on social media would realize their enemies are not those who practice different religion, who are of different ethnic group or different political persuasions.

The real war is between the HAVES & HAVE NOTS.

Travel / Re: Canadian Student Visa Thread Part 23 by mdsne(m): 7:23pm On Jun 05
ExperimentBoi:
Hello Guys, good morning

To give back to the community and to share my experience (based on true story, I got my Canada Student visa in 8days, Immediately after biometric they requested for my passport same day)

I will share some good pointers to help people struggling and those who might have gotten refusal.

First I would say no visa is guaranteed and it takes the grace of God and enough explanation (my SOP was 20-45 pages, Yes you read that right)

I see a lot of people selling their property but they are ways you can move to Canada without selling your properties In Nigeria, At least that Is what I did.

First you want to talk to yourself as if you were a VO.
Ask yourself some very difficult questions and be realistic that if you told someone else, Would they would be satisfied as you are with your answers.

Remember the VO will not call you on the phone to ask you question regarding your application or if you made any mistake, I am speaking from experience as I did my whole visa application myself without the help of an agent.

It took me 6 months to gather every information I needed and it was a first time application. So speak about your application with the mindset of not hearing back while trying to answer every possible question the VO might have in mind.

I want you to start by introducing yourself to this VO. They don’t know you or even your past life, when you are introducing yourself, try to also add photos of any past event or memory in that your introduction.

Highlight your current life situation in Nigeria and how you feel studying in Canada will improve yourself and career, emphasis on your career

Do not stop talking about your career!!!

Moving on, talk about your immediate family, remember to show pictures as well.

Do not just mention “Oh I have a senior brother blah blah blah, try to paint a picture in the mind of the VO so they can see you and this strange person (the brother) you have mentioned.

Sometimes it is not about the money in your account it is how you prioritize your career and how you sound determined in your SOP.

While you are doing this steps, remember to label your write up so it makes sense, that even if the VO jumps from page 1 to page 5 and back to page 3 without, it will make sense to them without missing any point.

If you have the funds, add a GIC to your application, if you can’t they are other ways you can proof cash availability.

I got my student visa in 8days from Nigeria and got a 10years visitor visa In Canada.

Remember there’s no such thing as too many documentation, you are literally writing to a human being that will not ask you question or respond back to until they have concluded their process (Decision).

Take your time to explain your funds available to you as much as you can, it doesn’t matter if you have 4 Million or 120 Million Naira , if your explanation is not tight enough, your visa can be refused based on generic reasons.

Remember this VO doesn’t trust you, you have to build up trust by adding extra ordinary proof to every of your statement you make.

Omo Canada Hard o!!!
Better come with knowledge, skills or money or you go suffer eh, e go be like say make you D*e but you no go gree d*e

BEST OF LUCK!!!
Can i get in touch with you sir

Politics / Count Lagos Out Of ‘western Region’ Agenda, Group Cries Out by mdsne(m): 2:46pm On Jun 02
Indigenes of Lagos State are expressing their strong opposition to a bill proposing the return of Nigeria to a regional government system.

Represented by the De Renaissance Patriots Foundation, Lagos indigenes are firm in their stance against being included in the Western Region under the proposed legislation.

According to a statement from the Media Office of De Renaissance Patriots Foundation, the group highlighted their rejection of the bill by stating, “This bill that is being proposed or suggested spells an ominous sign to us from Lagos State. It is a further attempt to subsume our aspiration into a larger group that is antithesis to whatever we believe in as indigenes of the state.”

The group emphasized the lack of extensive consultations on the matter and emphasized their preference for an independent status for Lagos State. They pointed out that historical experiences have shown that being part of a larger region has not benefitted Lagos indigenes, citing instances of marginalization from their neighbors in the South West.

The statement further noted the dissatisfaction with the lack of progress and development experienced by Lagos indigenes when part of a region, asserting that being included in the Western Region historically proved to be an aberration.

The De Renaissance Patriots Foundation is therefore calling for a referendum to gauge the true desires of the people of Lagos State regarding their inclusion in any regional system.

They reference the opposition of past leaders and traditional rulers to such inclusion and vow to resist any attempt to bring Lagos State into a regional structure against their will.

Furthermore, the group urged the representatives of Lagos State in the National Assembly to seek input from elders, statesmen, and stakeholders before making any decisions on the bill.

They stressed that the issue transcends party politics and requires a careful consideration of the wishes and interests of the people of Lagos State to prevent their inclusion in the proposed South West Region under the bill.

Politics / Kano Crisis: Stop Govs From Deposing Kings – Muric by mdsne(m): 2:58pm On May 26
As the ancient city of Kano boils over the dethronement of five emirs and reinstatement of another, an Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has demanded the repeal of laws that empower governors to dethrone traditional rulers in Nigeria for sanity to prevail.

The demand was made in a statement issued on Sunday, 26th May, 2024 by the Executive Director of the group, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

According to MURIC:

“The city of Kano is currently embroiled in crisis as the state governor, Abba Yusuf, deposed five emirs and reinstated Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi who was dethroned as emir of Kano on Monday, 9th March 2020.

“A court injunction seeking to stop the reinstatement of Sanusi was sidestepped and the governor ordered the arrest of the emir, Aminu Ado Bayero. But in a dramatic twist, security agencies, including the army, the Nigerian Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) beefed up security in Aminu Ado Bayero’s palace to disallow his arrest.

“MURIC is shocked by these developments. It is not only embarrassing but confusing and that is to say the least as we struggle to restrain ourselves from going into any explosive outburst. Politicians are out to debilitate, destabilize and finally dismantle the traditional system. The governors have bastardised the traditional system the same way they messed up the local government system all over the country.

“The show of power in Kano in the last 48 hours are symptomatic of a serious decay and big threat to our nascent democracy. Traditional rulers are made victims of political intrigues and the fear of the total collapse of traditional values hangs above our heads like the sword of Damocles.

“It is an open secret that governors act with politics at the back of their minds. We strongly condemn the way and manner two governors, past and present, have turned the revered stool of the ancient city of Kano into a tool for ping-pong game and our traditional rulers who should be respected by the governors are now being pushed hither and thither.
[AD] Urgent: Download This APP & Get Instant Reward

“It is not a Kano affair alone. The South West, South East and other parts of the North have witnessed deposition of traditional rulers.

“The position of MURIC has always been that governors should no longer be allowed to dethrone traditional rulers and we have ventilated this campaign on several occasions.

“The naked dance in the market place currently going on in Kano has made it more imperative for Nigerians to rise against the excesses of governors. It is time we demand from our lawmakers to immunise traditional rulers from disgraceful, untimely, unnecessary and politically motivated dethronements. This campaign should be taken up in all the 36 state houses of assembly. The law which empowers governors to depose kings should be repealed.

“That will not necessarily make the traditional rulers all powerful. Traditional rulers who misbehave can still be sanctioned by the kingmakers. He can be suspended or dethroned but it will be by his own people. The kingmakers are enough for the king as checks and balances.

“MURIC appeals to all stakeholders in the Kano imbroglio to tread softly. They should desist from making inflammable statements.

“All sides in the saga have gone to the extreme. The deposition of Emir Sanusi in 2020 allegedly for insurbordination was an extreme measure. But ordering the arrest of Emir Ado Bayero after his removal is high-handed particularly without stating his crime. Revenge is a wild dish and the path of moderation is the path of decency. This is a democracy and the days of l’etat c’est moi are far gone.

“While we call on Kano citizens to remain calm, we appeal to the security agencies to avoid confrontation. Kano must not burn.”
