for those of you arguing about rent deposit etc, there is a lawin the Uk which states that Landlords are only allowed to collect one month rent in advance and one month in hand ie you need to have two months rent to start living in a single room, guys  dont get it wrong, everybody who comes to the Uk start with one room unless your parents or relatives are here who own thier own house, same law is what Lagos state govt are trying to introduce.
So in all there aint  no way anyone is gonna ask you to pay up to 6months rent as someone said on here, thats a practical scam, you however may be required to sign a 6months contract ie you will have to live there for 6 months B4 you are allowed to move out  and take you deposit.

@Erico - thank you for this point, it is a very important one. The a landlord can only ask for one month deposit by law but may ask for any amount in 'advance rent' - this is less regulated. One month is more common for those who have full-time jobs or a guarantor. However, if a landlord perceives risk of default i.e. those on benefits or those without regular employment such as students. It is not uncommon for them to ask for 6 months deposit in advance, it is their choice to do so, you may choose another property if you are not interested. This seems to happen more to foreign students compared to home students - I guess it is an unfortunate perceived bias of them being more able to run away (and is not a scam in the sense of being illegal but is quite unfair). To me, it is not advisable to pay this amount if you can find a landlord elsewhere who is more reasonable, but some people are forced to accept. Of course there have been some cases of litigation where landlords collected 6 months advance rent and the court decided that this was illegally being used as a deposit with a false name as 'advance rent'. But you will find the number of said cases are rare. It is very important to work out terminology when reading contracts - I suggest all new students go to their international advisors at their universities for help with contracts on arrival.

This link from a university shows what has been happening but what that university may provide to assist those being asked for 6 months in advance rent. Check if yours can do the same:

and many have been refused as a result of not having a place to be accommodated in the UK

am not going to enter into an arguement/discussion with you on this.

its really up to the applicant to do what he decides.

Okay that's fine - I don't believe we are arguing, we are merely offering opinions for the same goal - to help this prospective student. I am happy to see caring Nigerian's like you, you need to keep up the good work - i have pretty much agreed with every opinion or thought you have put forward so far. The reason I put forth my own opinion is the fact that the applicant does not have time to take your option and if he took the time, he would be rejected on the basis of applying too late (it will take time to confirm payments and contract). Many visiting visas receive rejection because of no accommodation and it is possible this happened with student visas under the old scheme too - but the point I am trying to get across is it is not necessary under this new scheme. I understand your points and the old scheme was very subjective so we all were rushing to tick boxes we were not sure existed or not as you could be rejected over anything - but that was the whole point of PBS. At the beginning of PBS perhaps some people were rejected for not having accommodation even if they had the required fees - I have not personally witnessed this in the PBS period, but I believe you that it might have happened since you said so: this is a mistake on the part of the BHC then and an administrative review would have sorted that out. Probably more likely in the beginning stages of the new system as everyone was still thinking with the old system in mind, this is less likely now as the new process is now more familiar to them. My latest student got his visa after 11 working days from Ikeja, he did not have accommodation even though his university provides accommodation (he didn't get halls of residence because the waiting list for accommodation linked to his university had started from May and he started his application in September), he left that space blank. But had all the money needed to cover him, I am currently searching for private accommodation for him. He will take this accommodation list to his university for further advice and a letter supporting his studies here.

Thanks, for your encouraging words, happy to be of service.

I am already registered in UK.

Nigeria's registration process is not as transparent as it is in the UK. But I have met a lawyer from this forum whom I believe is quite honest and will probably be using his service. But before I use him, I have to obtain an office in Nigeria which I am still searching for through agents. Any recommendations nairaland? Sorry - off topic.

You'll need to have a heart of stone for you to leave your banking Jobs to come over to UK; i have to tell you the truth; don't expect to walk into another banking job here in the UK. Your Nigerian experience and qualification will attract an insignificant recognition from UK employers.

Starting a new life in the UK as an immigrant is very hard, there's a very little or rather no help at all from the UK government. The information for new comers is scanty and very misleading. Compared to immigrant going to Canada, USA and Australia, UK immigrants seems to have more hard hurdles to cross. In the Canada for example if you migrate as a skilled worker you could at least go for more education with govt funding and assistance, this definitely do help immigrants to settle and intergrate easily. However, the UK govt does not provide any sort of funding for immigrants under tier1, if you want to study in their Universities you'll be charged at international student rate (except you have resided in the UK for 3 years) and yet they will expect you to make earnings up to £35000 to get your visa renewed! what a ridiculous condition.

My advise to you is to look before you leap and think of the consequences and weigh the merits and demerits of this your proposed migration. I am not discouraging you at all the choice is yours but be aware that there are so many hurdles to cross.

There have being other visa applicants on this forum faced with the same problem and the advice given to them if I remember correctly is for one to go to WAEC office at Ogba and get original certificate. I think you should do that now.

@chigsmith - I am not sure how to help you as the video is clear on this site for me. Perhaps you should contact Seun or the administrators? I also posted some videos in my other thread.

Khadie:

@Khadie - Thanks for the well wishes. Yes I have agents looking for an office. But before I pay and sign contracts I have to go to Nigeria to validate things myself. The nature of my job means I am constantly interacting with universities for my students, I am also studying for a Master's degree at UCL part-time myself (full scholarship I might add - so it is possible). I will have to inspect the offices, sign contracts, oversee payments and set up the branch, but I believe in doing things right and it is so easy to be duped when you are not familiar with the process of lease validation in Nigeria - so I can't jump into it! My website is http://www.degreeangel.co.uk as you asked.

@Erico2k2 - Thank you! It is a very important point, many fall foul as they automatically assume the white man does not do fraud. I personally have been asked to pay 6 months rent in advance or provide a guarantor when I was a student and it was due to the calibre of the property, but only once. This is more common with international students and people on DSS. As a full-time employee a work reference is enough so I am not surprised you have not experienced it. I was shocked myself to be asked for it as I had seen 3 properties that day and it was the very last one that stated those terms. A landlord is more likely to do this if one of the following apply:
1. They feel people are rushing for their property and have bargaining power
2. They are going to travel for a while and need to feel secure about having a lump sum in their account without chasing you down
3. They have had bad experiences with tenant before (it is hard to remove tenants even if they have defaulted and most landlords rely on your rent to pay their monthly mortgage)
4. They are racist/have stereotypes about your demographic!

All of these things are rare to the average Brit like you and I (I see your a Londoner like me), but are not impossible, they are more frequent with international students and DSS (social security benefits) holders, unfortunately. But you guys have a choice so be sure to search around and find out if what help your university can offer.

Congratulations Kunle93! I was wondering why I never heard from you for a while. Mine says Inscan at OC at the moment. i am sure it will be ready soon. You got your in after 5 working days. I think it's true that the embassy recognizes some agents and work faster on their applications even though they don't admit it publicly.
