Civil service was very powerful in Nigeria until the Muritala regime civil servants were more powerful than ministers because the civil servants were career professionals with assured tenure and you can’t do anything without their approval . He picked Umeadi because Zik assured him he wasn’t going to contest. Only for Zik to contest after Awo had picked an Ibo man as VP thus depriving him the option of choosing a Northerner and the chance to get votes in the North. Zik also double crossed Waziri Mohammed who together with Zik had initially formed NPP with the understanding that Zik wasn’t running for presidency. That was why Waziri dumped NPP and formed the GNPP.
