With the rising cost of beans, many Nigerians are looking for budget-friendly ways to continue consuming protein foods.

There are several inexpensive protein sources that can easily be incorporated into everyday meals.

Here are three affordable protein foods you can rely on as the price of beans continues to increase:

1. Eggs -

Eggs are a staple in many Nigerian households due to their versatility and high protein content. A single large egg contains about 6 grams of protein and a host of essential nutrients such as vitamins A, D, E, and B12.

Benefits of Eggs

(i) Nutrient-Dense: Rich in essential vitamins and minerals.
(ii) Versatile: Can be prepared in numerous ways—boiled, scrambled, fried, or added to stews and soups.
(iii) Affordable: Remains a cost-effective source of high-quality protein.

2. Egusi (Melon Seeds) -

Egusi, derived from the seeds of the melon plant, is a beloved ingredient in Nigerian cuisine, known for its rich flavor and nutritional benefits. Often used in soups and stews, Egusi adds a unique taste and a host of health benefits to various traditional dishes. Let’s explore the numerous advantages of incorporating Egusi into your diet.

Benefits of Egusi

(i) High in Protein: Egusi seeds are an excellent source of plant-based protein

(ii) Vitamins and Minerals: Egusi seeds are packed with high vitamins and minerals,

(iii) Digestive Health: Egusi is a good source of dietary fiber that promotes regular bowel movement, and helps in weight management.

3. Millet -

Millet, often overshadowed by more popular grains, is a nutritious and versatile cereal that deserves a place in the Nigerian diet. This ancient grain, known for its resilience and adaptability, is not only a staple in many parts of Nigeria but also offers numerous health benefits. It provides a good amount of plant-based protein, which is crucial for muscle repair and growth.

Benefits of Millet

(i) Protein: Provides a good amount of plant-based protein, which is crucial for muscle repair and growth.

(ii) Digestive Health: Millet is high in dietary fiber, which is beneficial for digestive health.

(iii) Blood Sugar Levels: Releases glucose slowly into the bloodstream, preventing sudden spikes in blood sugar levels.

Whoever wrote this is either EXCEPTIONALLY dumb or still thinks Goodluck Jonathan is President.

Egg is so EXPENSIVE that one crooked politician went on TV to say that egg is a luxury meant for rich people.

Egusi too has turned into granulated gold. Very expensive. Plus, it's not to be eaten in a vacuum. With the accompaniments needed, you might as well just buy the beans.

Overall, this is a DUMB piece.

Why do people think beans is protein but not rice?
Both should be considered carbohydrate.

The prices of these foods you listed have also gone up. There's no cheap alternative in this Tinubu's calamitous government.

All the alternatives you listed are also rising in prices, although not rising as fast as beans.

I have made the following observations:
1. We are currently in the planting season for beans, hence the scarcity.

2. Price will not come down. Let them set the minimum wage to 250k, it will become worthless in the next 3 years.

3. Insecurity is making it harder for people to farm. Boko-haram, Bandits and IPOB are wreaking havocs all over the country. See as thousands of Southeasterners are fleeing to Lagos and other Southwest states in this video.

Whoever said beans is high in protein is being deceived. I'm no nutritionists, but to get a good source of protein go eats meats, eggs, fish etc. And these foods sef are not even affordable.

What about alternative to Garri, Fish , Rice , Milk and every other food .
I've said it and I'll say it again, Nigerian politicians are the luckiest in the world.
I can imagine them reading this post and the tomato alternative post and saying to themselves " You can see they have no breaking point" . Insha Allah I will retire a Nigerian politician 🙏
