Fuel Subsidy Is Back – Obasanjo Faults President Tinubu’s Claim On Removal Of Fuel Subsidy

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has disclosed that the fuel subsidy, which was abolished by the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government in 2023, has been reinstated due to soaring inflation.

The revelation contradicts Tinubu's declaration during his inaugural address on May 29, 2023, that fuel subsidy had been permanently removed.

The subsidy's removal led to a significant increase in petrol prices, from around N200 to over N600 per litre.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Obasanjo criticised the government's approach to removing the subsidy, arguing that measures should have been put in place before its removal.

However, he noted that the subsidy had effectively been reintroduced due to the current high inflation rate.

There’s a lot of work that needs to be done. Not just wake up one morning and say you removed the subsidy. Because of inflation, the subsidy that we have removed is not gone. It has come back,” Obasanjo said.

He also highlighted the need for investor confidence in Nigeria, stating, “You have to go from a transactional economy to a transformational economy.”

One of the key demands of the ongoing nationwide protests is the reinstatement of the fuel subsidy regime.

However, in his recent Sunday broadcast, President Tinubu categorically ruled out the possibility of reviving the fuel subsidy. He described the decision to remove the subsidy as "painful but necessary", emphasizing that it had been a major obstacle to economic growth and development, likening it to a "noose around the economic jugular of our nation.”

Why are we always quick to point fingers?

Obasanjo should remember that the issues with fuel subsidy didn't start today. Tinubu is trying to navigate through a maze of challenges left behind by previous administrations.

Instead of casting blame, let’s support the efforts to find a sustainable solution. We need to look at the bigger picture and give room for progress, no matter how slow it may seem.

What’s important is that we keep pushing for better policies and hold the government accountable, not just criticize from the sidelines.

As long as crude oil prices are volatile and fuel price at the pumps are stable, subsidy is involved.

Subsidy is the element that keeps the price stable until the government decides to revisit the price.

In summary, there is still subsidy.

It would be much better for the government to subsidise the cost of crude supplied to local refineries than this current nonsense subsidy model that only enriches the racketeers in the oil sector.

Obasanjo should focus on his own legacy instead of critiquing Tinubu. The man is trying to make tough decisions for the country. Let's give him the chance to steer the ship without all these distractions.

Well I guess what Tinubu meant in his broadcast is that he can't afford to pay more than what he's paying as Subsidy now. Because the landing cost of petrol per liter is more than 1k due to inflation and dollar exchange NNPC is selling 585/litre so who's paying the remainder of almost 500 naira of course not the marketers

Please, stop defending the indefensible. It doesn't make any sense at all.
Did you understand what Obj said?
He was a 2Term civilian president and once a military head of state. So he knows what you don't know. Tinubu is the cause of the hardship we are facing now, by his thoughtless decision and statement on fuel subsidy removal, when he hasn't even sat on the chair even for a minute.
Obj, is saying, the haste to remove, caused inflation that has brought it back again.
Can't you understand that the fuel subsidy is back again, despite Tinubu's denial that it has been removed and can't be restored again. Obj knows what he is saying please.

Obasanjo needs to understand that progress comes with challenges. Tinubu's decision to remove the subsidy was a bold step towards long-term economic growth. We can't keep holding onto short-term fixes that stifle our potential. Change is hard, but necessary for a brighter Nigeria. Let’s support our president as he navigates these tough waters.

Even a toddler knows this... but this is a government that likes to lie itself.

Whatever gains Tinubu intended to achieve with 'subsidy is gone' have been eroded by the floating of the Naira that followed immediately..

To subsidize simply means to give some relief to the citizens so they can be able to afford.. the floating of the naira took costs beyond the reach of the common man. Inflation crept in.. and nobody has rested ever since. Month after month up till now, the economic indices look gloomy. A bad downhill trajectory. Every month since January this year, they have been telling those who care to listen that they have turned the corner, on the way to recovery. They haven't. The situations in Nigeiran housholds tell a different story.

Those who should act fast have wilfully blinded themselves to the reality. I wrote in one of my piece an African adage: "you can't wake a man who pretends to be asleep".

The government should come down from its high horse, humbly apologise to Nigerians as this was a policy error by the way it was handled, reinstate the subsidy officially, tackle the corruption therein that allows a few people to corner the money, fix the Foreign exchange mess, and peg fuel at not more than N250/L.. and watch inflation crash to 10 - 15%..

But if they chose the stubborn path of leaving the people to get used to the hardships without providing any concrete relief for the masses, posterity would judge them accordingly.

A word is enough for the wise.

I'm skeptical about the return of fuel subsidies. In my opinion, it's best to remove them entirely. However, the government should have implemented a gradual phase-out plan, combining structural development with social welfare measures. This approach would have mitigated the harsh impact on citizens. Unfortunately, the abrupt removal has left people feeling helpless, affecting both the vulnerable and the resilient alike
