that's gundogan before his injury
I know for sure that he's comfortable playing any of the 3 central positions (am, cm and even dm) I see him more as a box to box midfielder

That is great news.
The sooner we part ways with deadweight like Falcao et al the better.
Falcao is finished and RVP is on the way to being finished also. Clear out the attack leaving maybe Rooney and get a younger and more athletic supporting cast next season

the new system would benefit any striker - what makes it work is the triangle on both flanks on the pitch & the ball retention of mata, herrera, carrick.

has rooney really fired since LVG found this system? apart from the goal against spurs, rooney hasn't scored as the arrow head. when he scored against villa, he was operating behind falcao......and he was the worst player at anfield.

since VP got injured, rooney has scored only 2 league goals in as many as 400 league minutes. i think we should be careful on how we handle this. VP can still be a wonderful squad player even if he cannot be a guaranteed starter anymore.

In an earlier post some months ago i stated how in the best scenario for me we would have rooney,RVP and falcao ALL gone next season.
however if we are to have one remain for next season, it should be rooney. he is younger, has a better fitness/injury record, more versatile and he is English plus he is captain.
What i would HATE to see next season is more than one of those 3 in the squad.

rooney is unmovable
his contract, age, image, etc guarantees that he would retire at OT. he has signed the rest of his life to man utd but i agree with the general sentiments here.

we need a boost of youthful energy in the attack. i heard cavani is LVG's favourite but i am not really sure of cavani's ability. all of a sudden, there's scarcity of top quality centre forwards in the world.

Since RVP's injury, Rooney has scored 5 goals as the sole striker. When RVP played as sole striker in the absence of Rooney and Falcao, he was only about to score 1 goal against Chelsea.

Rooney's goals since RVP's injury:
vs Sunderland 2 goals.
vs Arsenal 1 goal.
vs Tottenham 1 goal
vs Villa 1 goal.

He forced a goal against Newcastle in what could have been a goalless draw. He was heavily involved for Herrera's 2nd against Villa. Must Rooney be brought down to make a case for RVP?
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by elampiro(m): 2:56pm On Apr 11, 2015
Some people can lie. Where did anyone mention that Rooney and Jones have to play midfield for United to make top 4?

Any way I no get time for argument. Tomorrow on my mind.
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by elampiro(m): 2:59pm On Apr 11, 2015
Rooney has scored 5 goals in 6 matches as a sole striker.

Last season he averaged more than a goal per match when he played as a sole striker.

Why do people like dragging this man down? Abeg jor!

falcao played in this game & one of the goals was an awoof penalty.

vs Arsenal 1 goal.

not a league game.

vs Tottenham 1 goal

this was when the philosophy actually clicked. he had a decent game & scored a wonderful goal.

vs Villa 1 goal.

he was the poorest player on the pitch until the goal. he was also the poorest player of the 22 players at anfield.

that was after missing a CCC that ashley young provided by dragging the shot wide. no one is after rooney's life - i am just reiterating the fact that rooney isn't the reason we are playing well of late. rooney has actually performed poorer in the the 4-1-4-1 formation judging by his output against villa & liverpool.

the reason we are playing well is because rooney has been taken out of the midfield for the more technically gifted players who can pass the ball super-accurately & make more forward passes quickly rather than sending it diagonally like rooney was doing when he was in the midfield.

The Serie A is suspect so any world class performances there have to be taken with a pinch of salt. cavani hasnt really set the French ligue alight but playing in unusual positions most of the time wouldnt have helped.
having said that, if we offload RVP and Falcao and get Cavani it wont be a step backward.

THE FIRST STEP HOWEVER IS THAT LVG HAS TO BE SURE IN HIS MIND WHAT FORMATION WILL BE OUR REGULAR FORMATION NEXT SEASON

Then he can acquire or let go players based on that formation
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by JayKayMaybachz(m): 3:29pm On Apr 11, 2015
vP and Falcao should be gone already

As for replacement.... I don't want Cavani... But its true he's coming in... Sad though...

Mata,Felaini,Herrera,Rooney have cemented dia places

Janizaj will be gone for loan... Depay coming in... A midfielder (unknown)... Cb Otamendi .... Forget Bale and Ronaldo's Rumour it aint happening

A rb has been booked already

Book this space

Nani is coming back... Though he'll be a squad player... Hernandez will be sold... Henriquez will be recalled

you mean you have suddenly forgotten how you ridiculed the idea of herrera & mata playing in the midfield? you had a month-long argument with sailorXY......stressing how only pawa guarantees victory in the midfield.

just to buttress your point, you cited the usage of zouma in chelsea's midfield to tame spurs in the cup final. it was however a surprise when mata & herrera(players you deemed as featherweights) destroyed spurs with a bigger scoreline and without resorting to jam-body tactics of using a pawaful destroyer. grin

elampawa - guilty or not guilty. grin

i think RVP still have a lot to give.
the only problem is his pace - he still has a better technique than any of our strikers. he could still be a decent squad player.

cavani misses more than he scores - i don't see the hype at all. i wouldn't really mind lacazette or dybala - bring back hernandez and that's a core attack unit of youth & experience.

THE FIRST STEP HOWEVER IS THAT LVG HAS TO BE SURE IN HIS MIND WHAT FORMATION WILL BE OUR REGULAR FORMATION NEXT SEASON

he would use 4-3-3.
after this season, he has no more excuse now. he would have a long transfer window and he has now had the time to assess the whole squad. woodward has promised another £150m so LVG must deliver next season.

As I said, I am not here for argument. RVP was not in the games he played as a sole striker earlier in the season. Against West Brom he was more a minus 1. He missed CCC and should have passed another Mata for a tap into empty net, but RVP decided to score but shot horribly wide. These were 4-1-4-1 formations.

I am yet to see any post here attributing our good games to Rooney. o I don't know why you started this. However, Rooney has been providing an options upfront and helping to drag the defenders away from others. He doesn't just stay stagnant in front of the two central defenders or in front of the 6 yard box. His movements have been very key to providing opening for others in the 18 box area.

As for the midfield. Rooney was unlucky to play in midfield when we experimented with such players like McNair in the right back. Fellaini and Ashley Young were still injured at the time, and most importantly we played two strikers which meant the midfield was one man less. Under SAF Rooney played midfield in some matches across three seasons, and he was being likened to Scholes as we won over 90% of thlose matches. In 2012/13, when we beat Villa to reach unassailable lead for the title, Rooney was a class in the midfield. Sometimes, some players are not happy being sacrificed persistently and their performance gets affected. Rooney played in the midfield against Liverpool, Villa and Hull and scored 3 good goals before his form dropped there.

this has always been your mistake.
you are too hung on formation without looking at the personnel in it. football is too fluid, 4-4-2 or 8-1-1 is not really relevant - the players playing it are the most important. there's no way you would have herrera, mata & carrick in a midfield and not boss a game. if we had wilson as CF in the games we have won, the results wouldn't change one jot.

well, they are indirectly saying what we are playing now should be the default formation. if it was rooney that was injured with falcao playing as CF, the story would have been RVP & rooney should be sold ASAP. the new system has actually benefitted the midfielders more than the lone striker.

As for the midfield. Rooney was unlucky to play in midfield when we experimented with such players like McNair in the right back. Fellaini and Ashley Young were still injured at the time, and most importantly we played two strikers which meant the midfield was one man less.

unlucky? nah!
you justified his inclusion in that mid girl despite the fact that he was slowing the transition of the ball. rooney would never play a straight pass to the strikers, he would lay it diagonally & run into the box to share the glory of scoring the goals.

Under SAF Rooney played midfield in some matches across three seasons, and he was being likened to Scholes as we won over 90% of thlose matches. In 2012/13, when we beat Villa to reach unassailable lead for the title, Rooney was a class in the midfield.

in the last 3 seasons under SAF, rooney was a striker or a second striker. his skill-set can never fit into the midfield. apart from the diagonal passes that slow down the attack, he is actually mediocre there. poor positional awareness, atrocious short passing ability, etc.

Sometimes, some players are not happy being sacrificed persistently and their performance gets affected. Rooney played in the midfield against Liverpool, Villa and Hull and scored 3 good goals before his form dropped there.

and that's the point.....
scoring good goals in a midfield does not necessarily mean he had good performances there. carrick doesn't score much but i would have him in my midfield than gerrard who scores regularly from the midfield. it goes beyond scoring goals.
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by elampiro(m): 4:03pm On Apr 11, 2015
when Rooney got a red card, he was our best striker up to that point. Then we won 1 drew 2 in his absence. Coogar, you said we avoided defeat because 'bad luck' Rooney was away.

Now we have won 5/5 EPL games in absence of 'good luck' Jona.. sorry, I meant RVP. Coogar wishes RVP should go straight to leading the line.

i never said RVP should walk straight back to the team. i said we should not be too quick to discard RVP in the summer cos he has so much more to offer.

Princefame1:

ferdinand is an idïot, what does he know?

without mata, fellaini, carrick & herrera in the team, rooney leading the attack would have amounted to nothing. since the change in formation. herrera & mata has scored the same number of goals as rooney in the attack & they are actually playing very well too.
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by elampiro(m): 4:10pm On Apr 11, 2015
I won't argue further. Your sentiment is too much. Rooney played very well in midfield not just the goals in those three or four matches. Same as under SAF when he was not scoring

Finally, we TOO played in 4-1-4-1 with Mata, Herrera, Di Maria and Fellini behind him, he never felt Rooney or Falcao could be dispensed. RVP was obviously and desperately poor.

See you tomorrow.
