Pulling out was a rather stupid decision. Yes the delays at Airbus resulted in a cost escalation, but compare that with what we've been paying since then to charter heavy lift. And of course, it didn't help that someone at MoD confused the life-cycle price with the sale price, and the resulting public outrage was simply too much.
Indonesia is paying $2 billion for 5 planes whilst we were going to pay $2.5 billion for 8!
At least Denel Aerostructures and the rest of our aeronautical industry are still working on the A400M and earning from it. And Airbus hasn't given up trying to sell it to us. That's why they signed an agreement guaranteeing Airbus dynamic components to support any future Rooivalk MK2. So the nonsense that killed prospective Rooivalk sales to Turkey and Australia will not be repeated.

The cancellation came at the time when the Arms Deal inquiry was in the air. The media started to associate this acquisition with the Arms Deal even labeling it the New Arms Deal, they went on about how costly this project was. You know how sensational local media is especially the likes of eTV and of City-Press.

Anything the military has to buy nowadays would have to be under the Secrecy Bill or as "skills transfer and job creation".

SENEGAL AIR CHIEF CALLS FOR COMBINED TRAINING AMONG ECOWAS AIR FORCES

The need for ECOWAS air forces to train together to better protect and defend the interest of member countries within the sub-region has been brought to fore. The Senegalese Air Chief, General Biramo Diop made the call when the Commander of Nigerian Air Component of Operation RESTORE DEMOCRACY, Air Commodore Tajudeen Yusuf visited him in his office. According to General Biramo, there is the need to evolve an integrated airpower within the sub-region especially for future military engagements as this would help to better protect and defend ECOWAS interest. “The employment of airpower to support other instruments of national power for the maintenance of peace within the region cannot be overemphasized”, noting that future successes would depend on how well the Air Forces are able to train together”. The ECOMIG coalition, he said, has helped to concretize existing relationship between the NAF and Senegal Air Force as well as aid a better understanding of the need for the security architectures of member countries within the sub-region to be linked together for collective survival. General Diop commended the NAF for providing the air deterrence that ensured the actualization of ECOWAS mandate in The Gambia. In his words, “an enhanced defence and security apparatus would help to engender good governance and lasting peace within the sub-region”.

In his response, Air Cdre Yusuf expressed deep appreciation for the show of comradeship by the Senegalese Air Force, noting that it has further reinforced the mutual partnership between the two Air Forces. The ECOMIG operation, he said, attests to the capability of the region to forge a common front towards addressing its challenges.

Cameroun Navy flagship vessel.

The Cameroun navy's flagship vessel is a former French Navy 50 meters OPV. The ship is currently on her way to Cameroun, where she would join the fight against Piracy. We'll hope to see here during this year's Exercise Obangame.

Known as Dipikar, she's 50 meters long and has a 30mm as it's main gun.

The Nigerian Navy's Seaward Defence Boat III, which is currently under construction would be of the same length as Dipikar.

Just a minor correction: Nelson Mandela was the 1st democratically-elected president of SA. Unlike all the countries you've mentioned, we stopped being a colony in 1910 -meaning a long line of presidents/prime ministers. Not a democracy, yes, but not a colony either.

P.S. @chkil, I was pretty sure that no.17 is not Samora Machel so I went to check. The Nelson Mandela Foundation has the same photo up, where they appeal for anyone to id the rest of the people. Only 3 people have been identified: Mandela (15), Ben Bella(5) and Agostinho Neto (16).
