Staring confusedly while wondering, “Could this be a male or female? Maybe I’m not seeing right. Okay, I am. How come spotting that difference is like puzzle-solving?” From time to time, I grapple with these thoughts. Maybe, you do, too. It is tempting to classify such matter as insignificant but when you spend a minute or two weighing the implications for an individual, awareness of its significance begins setting in. Well, this is Nigeria and the context of this subject broached, a clue about its increased seriousness. We can’t deny (without fueling falsehood) that there are potential and actual tomboys and tomgirls among us. Let’s find out if two conceivable high-ranking rationales for this quirky personality are really flawless.

First, “being and appearing like a male/female is who I am and my real self; my gender from birth does not matter.” This view seems solid. After all, the gospel of “Be yourself” is widespread. But how can anyone be himself/herself by denying his/her self? It’s similar to a police officer saying he/she can bear that tag without maintaining peace and order somewhere. Any drastic step taken to change or mask one’s inborn gender for self-fulfillment defeats the goal itself. Such objective gets farther from, not closer to, being achieved.

Second, “it’s really not my fault. I grew up amidst lots of males or females. I suppose nature made me that way.” Citing circumstance or others as the ground for the inclination sounds convincing. The painting of “It is not within my control” is made. Actually, this does not absolve a male from blame for preferring lady-like mannerisms and wears or female trying so hard to be addressed as a mister. Availability of personal re-conditioning to revert to one’s true self exposes such perspective as untenable. Moreover, science has proven for the umpteenth time that nature operates orderly, so it would not turn a male to female and vice-versa half-way in the course of living.

Finally, it is apparent global gravitation towards modernism has somewhat led to redefinition of self-harmony and being oneself. Persons like myself are glad this trend, which has regrettably gone a notch higher to birth transgenders, remains unable to displace the fact truly being oneself requires being at peace with one’s gender.

If you re-read the concluding paragraph, you would discover I never asserted there is a necessary link between tomboys/tomgirls and transgenders. My point was such behavioural tendencies tend to lead to a decision to drastically alter one's gender. The high possibility of some transgenders today once being tomboys/tomgirls underscores the need to reconsider appropriateness of leaning towards such a personality. If you don't wanna get burnt, avoid moving close to the fire.

Also, I beg to differ on "tomness" being solely physical and not psychological. Exihibition of behaviours opposed to one's gender is the product of a belief system, a mental evaluation favourable to ways of life of an opposite sex. That goes on to pattern one's physical actions after it. In psychology, the term "Psychosomatic relationship'' sheds light on this truism.
