How did some of these illiterates and fools end up in the house of assembly? They are a real shame on the national psyche. For too long, the story has moved from one form of scam to another. It amazes me how we accommodate and assimilate all these rubbish. |

How cartel presented water as petrol to justify bloated subsidy *Adulterated petrol to flood market soon Written by Dare Adekanmbi and Qudirat Hakeem-Apampa Tuesday, January 3, 2012 It has been revealed that the N1.3 trillion claimed as subsidy by the Federal Government is a bloated figure and a product of endemic corruption among stakeholders in the downstream sector of the oil industry. A source in the sector told the Nigerian Tribune how the cartel earlier fingered as beneficiaries of the subsidy found willing collaborators in those saddled with the responsibility of inspecting imported fuel before it is discharged at depots to fleece the country. According to the highly placed source, fuel importers filled up vessels with water, disguised as petrol and kerosene and claimed to be bringing hundreds of such vessels from abroad on daily basis to justify their claim of huge amount of money as what the government was spending to reduce the price of the products. "Water is loaded in vessels and officials of Customs, State Security Service (SSS), Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) and other stakeholders would inspect these vessels and certified that they contained petrol or kerosene. "What they (the cartel) also did was to take vessels from Lagos to Port Harcourt and bring them back to Lagos as imported fuel from foreign countries to collect huge money from the government. When will this nation grow if it is being run this way?" the source queried. Speaking further, the source expressed the fear that adulterated petrol might begin to flood the country soon because of the profiteering motive of members of the cartel. ****************************************************************************************** It is the greatest height of buffoonery in the national psyche if these kinds of things happened under the subsidy program! Shouldn’t a thorough investigation be carried out to determine the cartels and bring them to justice? I think that Nigerians should demand a thorough inquiry or should it be swept under the carpet as usual? |

Now government needs to be held accountable to avoid recycling corruption (i.e from subsidy removal to another form of scam on the fund recouped) |

Some people are indeed very shortsighted, only thinking about how to fill their cars and their generators when decisions to achieve overarching goal of evading a looming catastrophic economic crisis is being taken. Imagine! Selfishness is the reason why we are not moving forward. Believe me, tough decisions reinforced by overwhelming evidence should be taken without equivocation and implemented now! The way this subsidy stuff is announced should be the template for other critical issues breeding and feeding corruption in every sector. |

It would have been strategically dumb to impose a state-of-emergency in these states instead of in few LGAs identified as the nuclei. This is a war on terrorism and requires tactical countermeasures. By gaining a foothold in few critical LGAs, you have technically perturbed the states and this is necessary for direct information logging with a concurrent front end assault. If managed efficiently, the surrounding LGAs will either become allies or risk losing their democracy. With this, we can get real time information on mode of operation, movements, sponsors and sympathizers. More importantly, the boots on the ground can provide rapid response. It looks like GEJ have started reasoning critically. My thought was that with the way things were going, he would have been clobbered into blanketing these states with S-O-E which would have been a very bad idea. Maybe the foreign advisors are helping matters. |

The last time I checked, Nigeria is still a country where politician and public officials don't go to jail if they loot funds. |

This issue touches one of the fundamental problems in Nigeria - corruption This issue kicked off with remarkable disclosures involving the Vice Chancellor, The State Governor and the Commissioner of Police. These disclosures cannot easily be retracted. This precedent puts the trio in very bad light. It is possible that the bad image they have created could further create a search toward finding an intentional false solution to the case (such as the one being portrayed above). Another tactics could be to stall the case and sweep it under the carpet since the victim may not be able to come forward not because of her stigma but because of fear of corrupt powers. Finally, the victim can also be bought to silence the matter. Any right thinking person that watched that video cannot say that the video and all that happened thereafter does not constitute a reasonable degree of violation (even in banana republic)! |

Students in elementary and secondary schools are planning how to ride jeep instead of studying. To make matters worse, the society is clapping for them since education appears to have no value in Nigeria and money is everything. |

Smack her with indifference for a time period and see what her response would be. If she doesn't show real concern, know that your relationship has decayed exponentially. -- Coach. |

Most Nigerian youths are selfish and cowards. Most are thinking about self and how to be connected to the corrupt system and make it. They don't have the guts to challenge the ills in their society like the Wole's did in their days. That's why the cycle of corruption keeps on repeating from one government to another. The cabals know that they won't do anything and the looting continues. |

Consider switching to computer science CS, you could get the best of maths, statistic and EE while in computer science. In CS, try not only to make the grades, in addition, acquire and be proficient in skills; e,g programing, you could diversify into other areas such as telecom, quantitative finance and systems simulation. Try not to graduate as just another CS graduate with 2-1 or first class, but one with skills and certifications which no one can take away from you (its better to start acquiring the skills early). It will really help and distinguish you when you would be looking for a job anywhere in the globe. You would have a wide area where you can work. Physics is too narrow, my thought. I am talking from experience. |

1. Solid Transcript with good GPA 2. Solid GRE or SAT (SAT for undergrads, GRE for grads) scores 3. Solid TOEFL Scores 4. Good personal statement 5. Solid Letters of reference These could get you a scholarship (for undergrads) or funding/Assistantship for graduate study. If you didn't get scholarship or assistantship immediately: 1. Make plan for first year before coming, tuition fees, expenses, etc 2. Be on the spot in your first semester on GPA (You have at least gained a foot hold for anyone to listen to you) 3. Research all the Professors in your department (including associated/collaborative) department while in your first semester and find out what they are doing and which of them have funding. 4. Once you identify the ones that have funding, approach then after your first semester, most of then would like to know your academic strength, interest and any prior research experience (First semester GPA would help) 5. Offer to get hands-on experience in their lab even if it is volunteering, show commitment and try to get some result. 6. After, some sacrifice in the lab, talk to the professor about helping you with funding and show that you want to be in it for the long haul (Professor don't want students that would just disappear as soon as they get some little change). Already, if you demonstrate understanding and commitment, the professor would already be putting you in his agenda for funding without your knowledge. 7. If the professor says he doesn't have space, try another one That's how you transit toward a PhD (if you want) without spending a your cash. On campus job CANNOT help you in anyway with your school fees and bills. Ok? 1 Like |

"I figure he should serve a little less than one day in jail. Bernie Madoff got 150 years for stealing $65 billion. That works out to $433 million per year which equates to about $1.2 million per day. This “small potatoes” guy stole about $1.1 million - so figure he does about 23 hours at the “Madoff Rate”. On that analysis, it’s hardly worth even prosecuting this guy…." — George LOL, |

With all these gruesome assassinations it would be hard to have objective journalism in the country. I am aware that corrupt people prefers only entertainment journalism while they continue with their looting spree. Many renowned reporters are on exile and are hurling long-distant salvos. |

When would good people in Nigeria learn how to resign from a corrupt government position that tend to diminish their integrity? When? When? When? Dora swallowed the same old hook they have been using for decades to fish the good people. Once it is swallowed, you message changes to trash and absurdity. They endlessly dangled this hook at Gani Fawehinmi to no avail. People of integrity should be smarter than their schemes. It is better to have international respect than to be part of a dumb government. |
