'Bankers are stingy' has become a very popular cliché among many Nigerians. However, before you crucify that your banker friend/brother/sister/uncle/aunt etc, please take note of the following.

1. He/she is not the owner of the bank.
2. Every money in the bank belongs to a depositor, and as such has a name tied to it.
3. He/she only has access to his/her salary just as anyone working in any other organization.
4. Certainly, you are not the only one begging him/her for money at any point in time.
5. He/she may have already been in serious debt because of people like you.
6. Most of them, especially the marketers, pass through hell to make their money.
7. He/she has his/her own life to live. They also have family and immediate needs to take care of.

Please give that your banker friend a break.

Well said...this is obviously another case of policy somersault & it is not good for Nigeria at this moment. If we continue this way, how then do we attain self-sufficiency in food production & security? How do we reduce poverty, malnutrition & inequality? How do we conserve foreign exchange? so many questions begging for answer! When are we going to learn?
We need sincere, vibrant & intelligent leaders who are in tune with modern day realities.

Career / Re: If Your Announce Your Goals To Others, You Are Less Likely To Make Them Happen! by sichri(m): 9:26pm On Oct 09, 2015
livelifeng:
It’s been said even scientists don’t know the beginning and will never know the end of time. Time is one of human inventions so we have to use it to our benefits. Yea you are right… it’s easier said than done, God is the One who can teach us how to number our days (silently prays).

Ok, let’s move on…

Have you ever set a clear goal and excitedly share with your friends but at the end did not happen?

Talking about goals, everyone has something they set to achieve every day or every now and then depending on their area of fulfilment. There are absolutely nothing wrong setting goals; these are the breakdown of to-dos that aim towards achieving your great goal (your dream).

I define a goal as a clear task you set to achieve at a particular time for a particular purpose. One can set goals to achieve a career dream, to get desired weight, be proficient in something, be closer to God or to be a better person.

The basic thing is we set goals to take us from where we are to where we want to be so this is like a thing to boast off especially with the wide drive in this present generation where everyone wants to be the first to invent and create new things.

Shouldn’t you announce your goals, so friends can support you?

Everyone wants to succeed but why do you choose not to talk about your goals?

The above fact (the heading) is actually true that if you talk about your goals or your plans, you might likely not achieve them.

I re-launched my site yesterday to the shock of most of my friends. I still told them I wasn’t sure when I would reopen the site some days before I did. Does it seem like I’m a dishonest person?

Someone explains to me that whenever she says she wants to achieve something, she believes ‘the devil’ will hear her and work against her plan so she keeps it in her mind and just do it at the exact time she planned.

These are definitely the opinions of most people.

“I don’t want to talk about it because the other person might cast a spell on me”

“No, people are wicked, lets me bottle up my goals and plans”

I haven’t seen the devil yet, but I think our ego is must times the devil here. Even a research found that those who kept their intentions private were more likely to achieve them than those who made them public.

This is the reason,

Once you’ve told people of your intentions, it gives you a “premature sense of completeness.”

You feel like an achiever already. As you talk about it, the image is formed in your brain and your brain tags it as, been done. The author identified it this way; “Since both actions and talk create symbols in your brain, talking satisfies the brain enough that it neglects the pursuit of further symbols.”

You can talk about it without feeling this way depending on who you are telling. I make sure I’m very certain that someone will be of help to achieving my set goal before I spill it out. I just want to work it within me and my God and the result should announce itself.

Also, one feels less burdened and free because no one knows what one is about to do and there is no unnecessary torture just because everyone already knows. This gives you a greater chance to analyse the goal again, redefine it or even cancel it if the need be.

Do you support or oppose? Let’s hear you out

Link: http://livelifeng.com/factfriday-if-you-announce-your-goal-to-others-you-are-less-likely-to-make-them-happen
I beg to differ. Contrary to your 'fact', a school of thought, to which I belong, believes that sharing your goals with your love ones have a way of motivating you to achieving them. This is because you don't want to disappoint them & you don't want to be seen as a mouthy person. These & other reasons with definitely spur you to taking actions towards the realization of the goals.

At Sichri,

Please can my friend take over your role wherever you work now? I posted on a thread a few minutes ago about badly wanting to help a bestie land a good job before the year ends.

No kidding guy I'm serious. Coming back to you though I think you should start one of the businesses you mentioned above WHILE keeping your day job.

Start & grow your business to a reasonably profitable point then you can quit. I once read an article online on extra streams of income and the author encouraged readers to maintain their day jobs while they generate extra streams of income.

His advice was sound and very sensible it is advice I intend to take as I pursue my own hopes & dreams regarding business but with a view to quitting full time employment once I get things to a profitable level.

The job is so stressful that you hardly have time to think of something else. If not I actually wanted to start it on the side. But mehn, it is not easy at all.

2. Small scale tissue paper production
3. Oil palm plantation

I can only venture into one for now. Please I need your advice.

Sylver247:
Fellow Nairalanders, I am the op of the thread on "How have you been surviving without a job?"
I have a friend who works with Shell, hes actually a childhood friend we grew up together. We have been apart for long cos he works in Warri while I reside in Lagos.
Recently we hooked up again via Facebook and we got talking on phone about life and all. Told him my jobless situation and he got very concerned about my plight. He promised to do something about it cos I was very open with him, didn't hide or form. He requested for my CV which I quickly edited, refined and wired to his email. He said he would submit it to some senior people in Shell.

About a month later he called me and told me something has come up. That there is 6 a year contract job that will be coming up in October and that I need to acquire a particular training (HUET) without which I can't work in the upstream. He said its normally free but the man in charge of recruiting people said since am just a referral, I have to pay for the training. He said the training is 65k which I confirmed and its true.

Now he promised to pay part of the training fee (40k) for me and said I should take care of the remainder.
I trust this guy (he is my very good friend from same community) but you know people can change suddenly.

I just need advice from people who know about this kind of stuff, if its possible or not. Its small money (25k) but I wouldn't want to be scammed off the little money am surviving with as am currently managing myself. I don't even have the money now but I can run round and get it.
He told me they are waiting for Buhari to announce his cabinet before the project starts and that he will call me.

Please advice me should I give it a shot?

davide470 uboma lalasticlala
This your story is confusing.
Since you are from the same community, have you confirmed from a third party to be sure that your friend is actually working with Shell? If yes, are you sure the person you recently hooked up with on Facebook is the same guy? Again are you sure the person you are speaking with is your friend?
If the answers to the questions above are in the affirmative, then be careful of what you post cos I see no reason why someone working with Shell would want to defraud you. And if he sees this, you may have well lost the opportunity.
On the contrary, if your answer to any of my questions above is NO, then guard your money jealously.

macroscopic:
Pls Nairalanders help!!

I met this beautiful damsel while serving(NYSC) in Imo State in 2013. She accepted to date me on one condition (NO SEX before marriage). I gladly accepted. Our love was a major gist in town because she is a beauty queen. I so much loved her with all my heart..She was a virgin and I so much respected her for that...I spent 75% of my allowee on her in addition with my personal savings...

On several ocassions, she lost control of herself during romance but as a gentleman, I kept my promise by not harvesting the forbidden fruit.. Her love for me grew stronger because of my self control. After NYSC, I relocated to Lagos in search of greener pasture. Things got tougher because jobs were extremely scarce. Still,I struggled to send her some money through her father's first bank account (she was 18yrs then).

Once in a month, I travelled from Lagos to Owerri just to see her....Our love was so strong..But since inception of this year, things got pretty bad that I could not meet up with my routine travels to see her. After 3yrs, I got a job few days ago in an oil company and I was so enthusiastic to relay the good news to her....But to my greatest shock ever...She sent me an apology sms that she will be getting married next week...I was preparing for sunday service but the news automatically made me fell asleep. I just woke up and feeling abnormal...She is calling but I can't imagine myself taking the calls...Pls I need your pool of unalloyed advice...

Pls save a soul today and God will bless you..Thanks
Is this the script for the next episode of Super Story?

If an 'honourable' member representing a constituency is just getting to know the perennial plight of his people some month after being elected, then one will be forced to ask:
1. From where did he come to represent these people?
2. Where did he campaigned for votes before the election?
3. On what basis did he make his campaign promises, if he will still agree to have ever made any?

Nigeria! God help us all.

I lost my mum recently, unknowingly to us she has been doing a 3 months roll over fixed deposit since last year, we got to know yesterday when the bank alerted her phone to inform her of their usual way of telling her about their plans to auto roll over for another 3 months. She has an account with this bank and we have been using her ATM card to withdraw her monies to avoid bank issues. Please we need advice from experts on how to terminate this fixed deposit and get access to her money, and if possible without the bank knowing that she is dead. I would be glad if this can hit FP so as to get more nairaland professionals advising us on this. Thanks
You have to notify the bank. Then get a letter of administration nominating you and/or your siblings as beneficiary(ies) of your Late mother's estate. After that the bank will give you and/or your siblings the money. Please follow due process. Don't try to cut corners.

The question is, in the light of acclaimed pruning down of cost of governance & dwindling revenue accruing to the Federal Government, does Mr President really need two SSAs on National Assembly matters?
Religion / Re: Lagos State Is Under Siege - Deeper Life by sichri(m): 8:00pm On Aug 27, 2015

Organized religion is one of the major causes of the increase in crime rate .

Deeper Life is a major culprit. They encourage their workers to quit their jobs so that they can 'serve god' more. After doing this, they start living in poverty, become desperate and turn to crime.

I was born and bred deeper life. I know first-hand what goes on there. They are very hypocritical. They encourage their members to breed like rats.

How can you encourage jobless men to have 8 kids. I remember one member was arrested for stealing pigs to feed his large family. He was unemployed like the rest.

what of the brothers that were warned to quit their jobs because they missed workers meeting? The stupid one who complied are still looking for jobs today.

Don't let me start with deeper life today.

Organized religion is the major culprit for crime.
you are talking trash. I know a lot of Deeper Life Members who are doing well. You left probably because they tell you the hard truth.

Business / Why Most Businesses Fail by sichri(m): 9:20pm On May 21, 2015
It is heartrending to know that at this time in history when entrepreneurship is being advocated as a way out of the ravaging effect of unemployment and poverty, over 50% of new businesses fail within the first 18months of their existence and a whopping 80% fail within the first 5years. That is, only 2 out of every 10 newly established businesses are likely to continue operations after 5years. These figures are startling but that is the reality we are currently faced with. The question is, how can this be reversed?
Businesses fail for a number of reasons, some of which are interwoven. I will give you three fundamental reasons why most businesses cease to exist after five years of their establishment. I will also endeavour to proffer solutions to the identified causes of business failures.
1. FUNDING/FINANCING MISMATCH: This is one of the major causes of business failure. For instance, using Short Term funds to finance Fixed Asset will lead to serious liquidity crisis.

A company whose Accounts Receivable Days On Hand (ARDOH) is greater than its Accounts Payable Days On Hand (APDOH) will suffer the same fate as the case above. The business will be drained of its life-blood (cash/liquidity) and it will eventually collapse.
SUGGESTED SOLUTION:
Every business owner/manager should master the company’s Asset Conversion Cycle. Ordinarily, the number of days you allow your debtors before repayment should not be greater than the number of days you are allowed by your creditors to clear your account with them.
In the same vein, do not fund your Fixed Assets with Short Term loans.

2. CUSTOMERS PERCEPTION OF YOUR PRODUCTS/SERVICES: A great product/service can only be determined by the customer. Most businesses, especially new ones, design their products and services with the customer in mind. However, the businesses are never in touch with would be uses to ascertain what they really want and how they want it. In the end, the ‘great’ product becomes a BIG flop.
For some other companies, as a result of increased customer base, customer service may be watered down to its lowest ebb. At such a point, most customers quietly turn to competition who offers better services and before you know it, the company will be nowhere to be found.
SUGGESTED SOLUTION:
Always get feedbacks from your customers. Excellent customer service, internal and external, should be a priority in every organization.

3. MANAGEMENT: In my opinion, of all the causes of business failure, management style and experience is the greatest. A single bad management decision as a result of inexperience and/or lack of proper training can crumble a flourishing business. A sound management team will know that there is need for: continuous innovation through research and development, proper branding, adequate funding and proper financing mix, training of personnel, etc. A management team found wanting in the forgoing will definitely lead the business to its doom.
SUGGESTED SOLUTION:
Before undertaking the entrepreneurship journey, business owners/managers should acquire the requisite trainings and experience to be able to survive.
